It's a good start.......2003-09-16
Well, I haul a lot of horses in the Western States and my one big complaint with this book is that it's not real good about truly covering the states in the West where we tend to be more spread out than in the East.
For example, try to find a place to stay in Utah with a horse if you are not way up in the northern part or clear down in Saint George. Another big drawback is that the book doesn't have any emergency section--like names of horse vets along interstates or tack and feed stores or anything like that-- not even the phone numbers for the Stateline Tack Petsmarts. Hey, I know everyone has to make a buck, but how hard is it to get the people submitting listings (and I was in the book as a stable and it cost me a pretty penny, let me tell you!) to recommend good vets/feed stores/etc. across the state for emergencies? Or what about asking for referrals and giving credit on NEXT year's listings to get more people in a state?
Oh, and then there's the accuracy issue. As a listing stable, I can tell you that mistakes are NOT corrected, no matter how critical, and they are perpetuated year after year despite sending in the correction form. We were able to deal with this as travelers because we didn't expect a year old guide to be up to date, but I recommend using the internet over buying this book. If you don't want to use the internet, then buy one of the other books that updates quarterly (they are in looseleaf format) and sell you the full year of updates for an annual price. In the long run, you'll get more for your dollar. Maybe with their books you won't find yourself broken down along a 600 mile stretch of main interstate with no veterinarian to call for your sick mare, and no place to keep your horses, foal or trailer while you seek help. Despite the advances in technology, there are still many places in the US where cell phones do not work. (Otherwise we wouldn't all laugh at the "Can you hear me now?" ad.)
Excellent source of information.......2002-12-16
We bought and used the 2001 edition to plan our round trip to Maine and back to Texas these past two years. We are ordering the latest 2002 as gifts for some of our traveling and trail riding horse friends. This guide is somewhat more comprehensive in numbers of listings than the Nationwide Overnight Stabling Directory, which we also bought and used. They each contain some listings that the other does not, but Jim's has more, and seemed to have fewer problems with out of date phone numbers (area code changes, usually) or folks no longer providing a service. Also, the Overnight guide does not list prices, nor include specific driving directions to the "horse hotel" (they want you to call first, not just show up - which is fine). It appears folks listing with Overnight pay for the privilege, whereas Jim's listings are free (hence more of them?).
If you're doing some serious cross country horse traveling, buy both books, if not than this US Stabling Guide is the one to get you most anywhere with lots of good choices.
Don't Travel without it!.......2001-05-29
I don't have the new one yet, (I am ordering it now) but I have an older one and I travel across the US on a regular basis, and I have found this book to be a life saver!!!! I don't haul my horses anywhere without it! I love this book!
US Stabling Guide.......2000-05-26
I have not read this book as of yet, because I am just now ordering it. I am hoping that it will have all of the information that I need. The reason that I am ordering this book as opposed to others that I have checked out is the price.
I hope that it will be satisfying and I will let you know what I think after I have had a chance to read it.

Generally Good, but sometimes messes up some of the details.......2005-08-24
My fiance and I recently spent a couple of months touring Thailand with this book in tow. For the most part the book served its purpose. However, there were times when the book was unnecessarily frustrating.
For example, those cities in which no map is provided, the descriptions of the cities are virtually worthless for navigating. In more than a few cases, restaurants or accomodations listed in text are not included with the corresponding map. We often got the impression that first-hand research was not done for some of the activities or accomodations - mostly for southern Thailand. For example, a describedly tedious 1-hr "rocky jungle" walk from Ko Phi Phi's Thon Sai Village to Long Beach actually takes about 10-15 minutes, mostly on a fairly wide dirt road. This leads me to believe the researcher took the word of a longtail boat driver, looking to sell a fare, instead of doing the needed first-hand research. More commonly, it became apparent that rather inconsistent reviews of accomodations were likely done either superficially or lifted from previous versions of this book.
Overall, the book is better than Lonely Planet for budget travelers (which is too broad). LG does lack in background information concerning many of the sites. However, it is a pretty good guide about how to travel around and where to stay. Some of the side trips are nice (Wat Phutok in Northern Thailand is a must if in the neighborhood). Even when there are times when a little more attention to detail, consistency in reviews, and correspondence between maps and text would have been appreciated. This book will generally get you to the right parts of town, in the right part of the country, for about the right price, and with a decent map for many towns. Where it can be frustrating, well, mai pen rai.
Not as good as other Let's Go books.......2005-08-20
I have traveled to over 25 countries and Let's Go has been my guidebook of choice for nearly all of them. It gives a lot of information without being too comprehensive.
I have been living in Thailand for 6 months now and have referenced this often. Its descriptions are right on the money. It gives you all the pertinent information that you will need. The places it recommends are accurate to their description.
THe only thing I wish this would list is the Thai script for the places it recommends. You will pronounce everything wrong because it is written in English the way a Thai person would read it and not the way a native English speaker would.
I can speak Thai and try to say where I want to go according to the spelling in this book and the people have no idea where I want to go. I have to rethink how Thai people would read the English and try pronouncing it that way. I can't imagine how difficult it would be to travel with this if I didn't speak Thai.
Best Thailand budget Guide you'll EVER read!!.......2005-05-19
I found this guide to be fantastic!!
I have just returned from a two month trip to Thailand and would have found it much harder without this book! Every place you would think to visit (and a lot you wouldn't!) are in this book.
Where this book differs though is that it isn't afraid to drop a few opinions. I found that while travelling you havn't got time to go everywhere and find everything out for yourself so it's nice to have an opinion to consult. Lonley planet tends to tell you where you can go and stay but doesn't give you much infomation to base your decision on. I had this book and a lonley planet at one point and quickly sold the lonely planet.
There are some vital pieces of information for Thailand that just aren't in the lonely planet, for instance if you wish to extend you visa by crossing a border (the cheapest way!)Let's go tells you how to do this and what you'll need for every available border crossing, information just not in the Lonely planet.
This book realy centres on the budget concious, with prices for rooms and typical meals included. Although there are a few mentioned, if you want to stay in more upmarket places, buy a different book!!
The maps in the book could do with improving, however I didn't find this to be a major problem.
I don't normally write reviews for books I buy, but I was so impressed with this book that I felt I had to. An excellent budget guide, and with a number of interesting articles, actually a good read!! Buy it if you're thinking of going to Thailand.
Shallow.......2005-03-15
This is a book clearly oriented to the backpacker, but so much so that it neglects more peripheral areas or upscale areas that a backpacker may occasionally be interested in. Its attention to nightlife, one of the more enjoyable aspects of Thailand, is dismal. There is a political correctness strewn througout the book, to the point of completely omitting major locales and activities, that is distressing. Thailand is not a politically correct country by any stretch of the imagination, but it is what it is, and as such is one of the most fascinating and enjoyable places on earth. The Moon Handbook, Lonely Planet and Footprint are far more complete and helpful.
This is the #1 guidebook for those on a super tight budget........2005-02-23
Let's Go is the budget back-packers handbook. Of the three guidebooks I have just reviewed on Thailand (Lonely Planet, Rough Guide), I found that Let's Go excels at helping you find the best of the "cheap" restaurants, and bargain basement hostels and hovels (occasionally hotels). Also, if you are considering camping in Thailand then this guide excels in this category.
Extremely impressive is the section titled "Alternatives to Tourism" where scores of NGO (non government organizations) are listed. Of the three guidebooks Let's Go has the best source for volunteering in Thailand. Conservation organizations, medical organizations, urban and rural development organizations are all listed. If you want to study in Thailand this guide has many school listings. Also, its history section is succinct and stellar.
Where the guide runs third is in the quality and quantity of maps, it has fewer accommodations and restaurants recommended, and its description of sights that you will be seeing is cursory.. For example the famous, must see, Bangkok Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha) and the Grand Palace received only 3 paragraphs in this guide, Rough Guide gives you five pages of description. Extremely tacky are the ads found in the guide that promote everything from clothing to guesthouses. Bad.
If you are strapped for cash and going to travel Thailand on the `cheep' then this guide along with "Travels' Tales Thailand' (see my review) should be in your knapsack. Recommended 3.5 stars

Ghost Liners: Exploring the World's Greatest Lost Ships (64pp)
ASIN: 0802788467 |
Book Description
Three years after the tragic sinking of the Titanic, another luxury liner went to a watery grave beneath the icy depths of the North Atlantic. The sinking of the Lusitania, torpedoed by a German U-boat in a sneak attack off the coast of Ireland, was one of the most pivotal and universally condemned acts of World War I.
Diana Preston chronicles the shipboard experiences of three children who were on that fateful voyage. Eleven-year-old Frank Hook, a third-class passenger, was moving to England with his father and older sister. Twelve-year-old Avis Dolphin, a second-class passenger, was being sent to an English boarding school with a chaperone. And five-month-old Audrey Pearl was traveling in luxurious first class with her parents, three siblings, and two nannies.
From different walks of life and varied circumstances, these three children shared a common bond-they all survived one of the most disastrous shipwrecks in history. Their stories, taken from firsthand accounts, personal interviews, and historical documents, provide a riveting look at one of the most tragic and significant events of World War I.

Lusitania: An Epic Trajedy by Diane Preston.......2005-06-08
Don't take the age range given here on Amazon (9-12) seriously; this is an adult book. I am immensely impressed with the depth and breadth of Ms Preston's research. I have read other books on the Lusitania and none compare to hers, not only for the quality of the research, but for the beautifully flowing writing that makes it a true pleasure to read. I have already ordered her book on the Boxer Rebellion and others based on the impression I got from the Lusitania Book. If you think you have read all about the disaster, think again and get this book; I'm glad I did!

Customer Reviews:
Cannot recommend this book.......2006-07-27
I was expecting, from previous reviews, this book to be about training and not about breed misinformation:
Quote:
" "The most powerful terrier is the American Staffordshire Terrier, or Pit Bull Terrier as he is often referred to. This breed has one of the worst reputations in the dog world. Bred for fighting, these dogs are still used illegally for this purpose. Like the Rottweiler, owning and AmStaff can be reason for your insurance company to tell you to find another carrier. If you want to be ostracized by other dog owners, then consider owning this breed......."
She says of Rottweilers: "some people buy an image breed to make a statement. Unfortunately they do not take the time to train the dog..... "
This is at best a massive generalization and at worst a condemnation of many breeds of dogs based on the author's personal bias. There ARE other dogs in this world besides the Border Collie. I am so glad there are other trainers that are reputable and actually care about the owner that wants to train his/her dog. I would not recommend this book.
An expert in her field........2000-01-27
I haven't read Kay's book, but I know her personally. I grew up in Chicago, and she was all four of my dog's groomer and trainer. She also bred the litter from which my dog Chuck came. When I was 8 years old she started training chuck and I, I am now 19 and he is almost 11, and he still remains the obedient, fun and loving dog he was when she started tranining him. At 11, an old age for a Golden Retriever, he still remembers everything she tought us. If you are going to learn how to take care of a puppy, she is the person to learn it from.
Very concise & easy to follow for the puppy owner.......1999-10-26
I have been training and showing dogs for more than thirty years. This book is the best I have come across for common sense in training a puppy. The chapter on housebreaking explains at what ages that you can except what resonse from the puppy. I think this is invaluable information to keep the owner from being discouraged that the progress is a slow one. All the information in the book is easily understood, and explained in enough detail for the average pet owner to follow. Also included are many tips for a more experienced, even competition dog owner. Included are many photos to visualize the training procedures, plus many puppy pictures just to enjoy.
An absolute must for anybody considering a puppy for a pet.......1999-10-25

It describes in detail, the seven AKC groups, and the characteristics of individual breeds within each group. In the breed descriptions information is given as to how certain dogs will fit into a particular lifestyle. Questions are asked of the reader, are you active? What are your work hours? What hobbies do you have? All of this information important to help match a particular breed of dog with a particular individual.
Education is given as to where and how to go about buying a puppy once you have determined what your compatible breed will be. The pros and cons of males vs females, spaying and neutering, proper veterinary care, and essential items for your new puppy are discussed in detail.
Puppy proofing your home, house training your puppy, and the necessary basic obedience commands are explained in a step by step sequence that is straightforward and easy even for a novice person to follow.
Behavior problems are discussed along with solutions so that you can learn to be a responsible pet owner. As Dr. Daniel Preston comments in his preface to this reprint, RThere is not now, nor has there ever been, such a complete compendium of arcane, irreplaceable, and wonderful leatherania in the English language.S Covered here are tools of the Bookbinder, Boat and Shoe Maker, Clog Maker, Driving Belt Maker, Furrier, Glove Maker, Handbag & Purse Maker, Harness Maker and Saddler, Hat Maker, Loriner; and, among the miscellaneous trades, the Ball Maker, Coach Trimmer, Felt Maker, Hydraulic Pump-Leather Maker, Last and Boot Tree Maker, Parchment and Vellum Maker, Taxidermist, Whip Maker, and more besides. Great Book .......2007-03-09
This is a great book. I reccomend it to anyone who is interested in the history of the leather industry, or who is interested in getting into leather crafts. It is very informative and gives you an idea on what kinds of tools are used in leather work and how they are used. It makes a great reference source. It givr you an idea on what kinds of tools you'll need for the differnt kinds of leather trades.
Super service.......2007-01-04
The title really says it all - delivered really quickly and in great condition.
Fun for Tool Junkies and Leather Workers.......2003-03-14
Look at all the nifty tools!
We just received our copy yesterday, and I expect my husband and I will be competing for it until one of manages to get through it from cover to cover. As the title implies, the author covers almost any tool you could think of used for leather working in the last 2.5 centuries, including things like workbences and stools. :) The book is arranged by trade - bookbinding, boot and shoe making, skinningk, tanning, finishing, etc, with the tools alphabetical by general type within each trade. Some of the descriptions are very brief, and the author spends more time in explanations of how more obscure tools are/were used than for common ones - which makes sense. Definitely enjoyable for the confirmed tool junkie.

A field of common red poppies growing wild by the roadside can transform an ordinary landscape into a place of mystery--their fervent, insistent color seems designed to take the breath away. For readers who've fallen under the poppy's spell, Christopher Grey-Wilson's Poppies: A Guide to the Poppy Family in the Wild and in Cultivation is an exhaustive work of research and classification of this remarkable and mysterious flower.
The book starts out with a brief, no-nonsense introduction that serves as a road map to the reams of information contained in the subsequent pages. Grey-Wilson, botanist and editor of Alpine Garden Society, has organized the poppy family into four main subfamilies: the Chelidonioideae, Eschscholzioideae, Papveroideae, and Plastytemonoideae. Within these subfamilies a series of varieties are delineated. In entries of varying length, Grey-Wilson provides information about zoning, propagation, advice on garden placement, and various other remarkable and somewhat unpredictable details. While some poppies described here can be found at any local garden store, others are not in cultivation and were last sighted in Turkey or Iran. Containing 182 color photographs, Poppies will satisfy readers who want more than just the basics, who want the whole scientific story, and then some. --Emily White
Book Description
Poppies, first published in 1993, was the first book devoted exclusively to these popular plants. Not only are the true poppies, genus Papaver, covered, but all the other members of the poppy family as well, including Glaucium, Dendromecon, Eschscholzia, Arctomecon, Argemone, Canbya, the plumed poppies Macleaya, Meconopsis, Roemeria, and many more. Grey-Wilson concentrates primarily on species and forms in cultivation, together with those species of striking or particular interest that are not present in cultivation but fully deserve to be introduced. For this new edition, the author included much new information about recent discoveries in the wild, as well as new cultivars introduced since Poppies was first published. There are general chapters on the family, cultivation, and classification, and a key to the genera. The individual genera, grouped into their respective subfamilies, are dealt with in detail, as are their more specialized cultivation requirements. Important synonyms have been included to avoid confusion or ambiguity. Botanical authorities are given for all recognized species and synonyms. This work will be very welcome to committed gardeners and horticulturists as a much-needed-and profusely illustrated-source of practical and botanical information.

Customer Reviews:
A beautifully illustrated guide to the poppy family.......2001-03-19
This remarkable and beautifully illustrated guide to the poppy family covers both wild and cultivated poppies around the world, updating and extensively revising the only book available on the topic. From general traits and cultivation to specifics to genera and species grouped by subfamilies, Poppies is recommended for college-level horticultural students with a special, technical interest in growing poppies.
Poppies A guide to poppies in the wild and in cultivation.......2001-03-19
Poppies is a well written and well organized book covering the main subfamilies and genera of the poppy species. Illustrations are included to clarify the in depth descriptions. This book is best suited for someone with a biology/botony background. I would not recomend this book to the casual gardener, as it is more of a college level text, complete with scientific names. The color plate in the middle of the book was a nice addition.

Original and thoroughly entertaining.......1998-08-26
This is a book for anyone interested in CREATIVITY, in finding ideas in places completely unique. This is a map to jump start your brain. Not just for the students of choreography but a fun and exhaustive survey of ideas. A real find for writers, visual artists, composers, even though it was written for dance makers.
For would-be and veteran dance makers of course, this book is a must.
Stuart Hodes has been making dances teaching and performing for four decades with the best and the brightest, Martha Graham, Television, Broadway...He has done it all and has an encyclopedic memory and eye and ear for interesting detail.

This book is worth every penny and will serve as a resource for years.
