Book Description
This national bestseller exploring the complex emotional lives of animals was hailed as "a masterpiece" by Elizabeth Marshall Thomas and as "marvelous" by Jane Goodall.
The popularity of
When Elephants Weep has swept the nation, as author Jeffrey Masson appeared on Dateline NBC, Good Morning America, and was profiled in People for his ground-breaking and fascinating study. Not since Darwin's
The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals has a book so thoroughly and effectively explored the full range of emotions that exist throughout the animal kingdom.
From dancing squirrels to bashful gorillas to spiteful killer whales, Masson and coauthor Susan McCarthy bring forth fascinating anecdotes and illuminating insights that offer powerful proof of the existence of animal emotion. Chapters on love, joy, anger, fear, shame, compassion, and loneliness are framed by a provocative re-evaluation of how we treat animals, from hunting and eating them to scientific experimentation. Forming a complete and compelling picture of the inner lives of animals,
When Elephants Weep assures that we will never look at animals in the same way again.

Insightful and fresh.......2007-09-27
Most people cling to the belief that we are the only species on the planet with the capacity for thought or emotion. In our daily experiences with animals we know that this is absurd but keep it ourselves for fear of ridicule. This book challenges those musty, Old World thoughts and fears. Even if you have already developed an enlightened compassion and ethic regarding other species, "When Elephants Weep" offers a refreshing, stimulating look at the life.
Not so great in the first place, it is now wildly outdated........2007-02-03
As someone who is studies emotions and decision making, I was looking forward to reading this book. While the author offers (and repeats, and repeats) considerable anecdotal evidence for animal emotion, there is little concrete science to support the claims.
Furthermore, the field of emotion-cognition study in humans is still coming into its own and has grown exponentially since 1996. Indeed, we now understand many human emotions better than in 1996. Naturally, when comparing humans and animal emotions, these advances dramatically change our understanding and therefore draw into question many of the inferences made in the book.
Not a great book to begin with. However, a decade after its release, it is borderline useless.
Had potential, but fell short.......2007-01-03
Having been intrigued by the title alone, I was greatly looking forward to reading this book. The book, however, did not measure up to my expectations. Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson has written several books, so I would expect much better writing coming from a veteran author, but the book was poorly written and poorly put together.
The book's title and subtitle appears as though it will be simply explaining the emotional lives of animals. Seems like a fairly simple concept. The author takes a different-than-expected approach by spending much of the book putting humans down and elevating animals to an almost god-like stature in comparison. Case in point, one chapter is called "Unfeeling Brutes" in reference to humans. The book seems to be aimed at convincing the skeptic rather than simply explaining the emotions of animals. One who already recognizes the feelings in animals would read this and say "I already knew that!" several times.
The author is incredibly redundant, saying the same things over and over again, proposing the same ideas, and using several of the same examples multiple times, perhaps with different wording, to prove his point.
There are plenty of stories to provide examples of animals' emotions, some endearing, some disheartening. That said, the storiesgo into very little detail, which seems unusual for a book of this sort. For one trying to prove the importance of emotions in animals, you'd think the author would find it in his best interest to provide as many details as possible. Instead, examples are shortened anywhere from a sentence to a mere paragraph. They also hop around a lot with no real sense of connection except for the emotion they shared.
Each chapter focuses on particular emotions, and they are broken down into sections within those chapters. It gives the *appearance* of organization in the book, but doesn't follow suit. For example, one chapter focuses on shame, blushing, and hidden secrets. Each part is broken into a different section within the chapter, starting with blushing. While reading about shame (which came next), the author took a sharp turn by ending the section by discussing blushing again, having not made any prior mention of it in this "shame" section. It was very jarring, and didn't flow at all. Such is the consistency of the entire book. Some sections are entirely useless in the sense that hardly any information or evidence is given, except to ultimately say "we don't know" and telling a story or two that proves absolutely nothing. The section on religious impulse is a perfect example of this.
The end notes are also confusing. Rather than puting citations within the book, you simply have to assume that any story the author is telling will have addition bibliographic information in the end notes. You find them by referencing the page number in the end notes, and lotcating the first line of the story next to the page number. This, however, seems to be more the fault of the publisher than the author, though the author can't seem to make up his mind if he will reference a work within the chapters or leave it for the end notes as he does both.
I don't necessarily agree with everything he says, particularly his intent on proving the "equality" of man and beast (though he fights for this equality throughout the book, he tries to almost cover it up by saying that we're simply "distinct" from one another). It IS wonderful to see a piece of work out there where the title alone may get people to open their eyes and see that animals can and do feel. The book might have been more widely received, however, had the author taken some time to clean it up a bit and spend more time focusing on the animals and less time on the humans he argues about so much. The author is clearly passionate about this subject, judging by the other titles he has and by this book. I am hoping that he will work on his skills as an author so that his next book on the subject will be much more refined. He has a lot to offer.
Looking for animal anecdotes?.......2006-10-31
First off, I am an animal lover. I've had pets most of my life so this book is very much like preaching to the choir. It would be hard for me to believe that my pets, and animals in general, do not have emotions. I thought this book would be black & white concerning that issue but it is very fair to the opinion that animals do not have emotions. The title suggestions that the opinion of this author is animals are emotional however she offers several stories and possibilities to keep the book balanced. I learned quite a lot from this book. It leans towards "animals are emotional" but it's not as black & white as I thought which made the book very interesting
I got this book because I wanted to read lots of stories of animals and their emotions but I didn't exactly get that. The first couple of chapters are void of emotional animal stories and once the book finally does start with the stories, they are lacking details. I felt as though the author wanted to get as much in as possible. Quantity over quality.
I'm still giving this book a good rating because I did have a great time reading it.
Activism Masquarading as Science..........2006-10-20
Knowing the author by name and by reputation, I borrowed this book from a friend rather than contributing to him financially by paying for it. It's just the kind of pseudo-scientific garbage I'd expect when someone schooled in Philosophy is allowed to write a book on a scientific topic. The serious question of whether - and to what degree - nonhuman animals experience emotion should be entered into not only with skepticism, but with knowledge of how Science should be carried out, and how to go about evaluating the data that results. Masson is qualified to do NONE of these, and seems utterly unaware of that handicap.
It's precisely what I'd expect from someone who romanticizes the barbaric acts of the Animal Liberation Front, however, a terrorist group that firebombs research facilities and university labs, then enters high schools and teaches those same tactics to our children. To my mine, Masson should share a prison cell for supporting them in his idiotic writings.

Disappointed Frommers Fan.......2007-09-18
We have a shelf of Frommer guides, US cities, Canada, Mexico, Europe & Asia. This was the first bomb. I found it totally useless and not up to the quality I expect from Frommer. Since it was the only guide to Vienna we had with us I feel my vacation was negatively impacted by it. After this experience I will not automatically purchase the Frommer.
Good Book For Vienna.......2006-09-05
Just got back from a weekend drive to Vienna. There is a ton of usefull info in this book. I wish there was a fold out map covering all of Vienna though. (Our hotel gave us one for free). I can't speak for the Hotel recomendations but the restaurant picks were solid. For like 16 Euro you can get a 72hr public transit pass. This pass also gets you museum discounts and freebies at seletcted restaurants.
Any other guide would be a better choice.......2005-06-19
Chose this guidebook over others as much to check out the Frommer's style as to get travel info. Normally I am a Lonely Planet guy, but since I was staying with friends didn't need a lot of in depth descriptions of logistics (lodging, travel etc.). Just looking for a description of some of the attractions.
I found the guide difficult to use. Although I didn't need much in the way of logistical support, there was really very little. There were only about 4 maps in the whole book and they were spaced out all over the place. Virtually no information on specifics for those arriving overland. Worse, the descriptions of the attractions any sense of enthusiasm. Normally when I read a guidebook, I get the sense that sites are over-hyped, but this book almost made me want to skip the city altogether.
I have found Frommers on-line a good source of info and reviews but won't be buying another of their guidebooks in the future.
A Must-Have for all Vienna Travellers!.......2000-07-28
This book was so great for our Vienna trip! We were the most well-prepared travellers for this city, which cut out plenty of stress, and allowed us to really enjoy our Vienna experience!

Animal Lovers Rejoice.......2001-01-22
Any human being of any age who loves animals will simply love this book by Penny Porter. It is packed with stories about courageous, heroic, and pathetic little creatures looking for just a little love and understanding.
If you're a true animal lover, this book will have you laughing and crying. But, you'll proably cry more than laugh when you read about some of these wild, domesticated, injured, lovable, and totally beguiling creatures of the Arizona desert.
Surpasses "All Creatures Great and Small" in readability, content, and enjoyability.
The collection of stories we have all been waiting for.......2000-04-05
Many of us are familiar with Penny Porter's delightful stories as they appeared in The Readers' Digest. Finally, she has collected them in a hardbound edition with wonderful pen and ink illustrations by Marilu Savage sprinkled throughout the book. The main characters of these stories are farm animals and wild creatures who are marred in some way; but, Ms porter's love and family values shine. These stories are inspirational in their love and nurturing care for all things, whether its the harsh Arizona desert, young children that arrive in middle age, or wild animals that most people would leave for dead or just shoot in order to end their misery. Ms Porter reveals that common sense and devotion to all living things are their own rewards. Her writing style is clear and concise. One only hopes for more than the abridged stories that frequent The Readers' Digest. These are stories that will keep you amused. They are perfect for bedtime stories and armchair traveling.
Great gift book, for all ages.......2000-02-21
HEARTSTRINGS & TAILTUGGERS is simply wonderful, a collection of Porter's animal stories depicting life on a ranch in southern Arizona. Many of these were serialized in Reader's Digest -- they're that good! This is a book that sticks with you, all heart and a lot of humor, too. It's a perfect gift book, sure to please and warm hearts. Don't send flowers; send Ms. Porter's book. Wish I could give it 10 stars!

Book Description
"I first went to Japan in 1977 and found the whole country ablaze with blossom. I went again in 1979, 1981 and 1984, always at cherry-blossom time. As far as I knew, Japan was always abloom." So says the legendary American photographer Lee Friedlander, whose newest publication presents, for the first time, the complete set of 73 images that the artist made during his four trips to Japan. The groundbreaking black-and-white images--first seen as 25 photogravures in a 1986 portfolio, and long out of print--appear as examples of radical picture-making even 20 years later. Few serious photographers would have dared to photograph cherry blossoms with anything other than color film. The result is a new kind of beauty, with many of the compositions bordering on visual chaos. The images collected here serve as a precursor for much of Friedlander's late landscape work, which was exhibited to great acclaim in his 2005 Museum of Modern Art retrospective. Printed by the laborious dry-trap process, the amazingly sensuous reproductions closely approximate the original prints. This book was produced entirely in collaboration with the artist.
Customer Reviews:
The very best work of a great photographer .......2007-01-11
'Cherry Blossom Time in Japan' is Lee Friedlander at the peak of his considerable powers.
The phrase 'frozen jazz' pops into my head, probably because Friedlander made a living taking photos of jazz greats, but also because these pictures are sweeping, moving, alive.
And yes, they're deeply emotional - at least to me. I have no idea what the photographer felt as he worked, but I can't help but get a great sense of...consolation.
Buy this book and cherish it.

Customer Reviews:
Tacky........2003-08-02
I've read all four books in this series, and this is the one I like least.
I can see why Peck chose to follow up on "Ghosts I Have Been" (the best, in my and probably most others' opinion). Readers and his publishers were probably hounding him for a sequel...and that's the most likely explanation for why this is so poor! It must have been written under duress, is all I can figure.
The tone of the other three installments is lost here, crushed under the weight of slapstick and gratuitous .... (Blossom ogling Alexander at the swimming hole? P-lease!) The 1984 sequence doesn't stand out as an anomaly, the way it should: everything leading up to it has been a painfully obvious parallel. And Peck also cheaps out, in my opinion, by only showing the extremes of the '80s lifestyle.
When I first read this, it had just been released, and I was 14. As such, I could totally feel Blossom's pain when Alexander starts courting Letty. But now, at 33, I have to wonder if he's worth losing a minute's sleep over. In GIHB, he and Blossom were a year or so too young for any serious romantic leanings (although there was a bit of foreshadowing when a character points out that if Alexander gets caught in Blossom's room, he'll have some 'splainin' to do), but they were definitely friends. Now, I can understand that a year later, when he starts to Notice Girls, that he might be swayed by Letty, who is more conventional, but that doesn't excuse his extreme rudeness towards Blossom.
And not just rudeness. In one case, he's either a cold-hearted SOB or the most base coward ever. Throughout the 1984 sequence, I assumed that it would be one of those deals where Blossom would return to 1914 just a few seconds past the time she left. But the same amount of time elapsed in both eras: she was gone for a night and a day. Meanwhile, Alexander just took off as soon as she disappeared, which is bad enough, but when they meet up again, he never shows one iota of concern for what happened to her! No "Glad you're okay", not even "So what happened?" For all he knew, she might have never have come back at all. What a jerk.
I'd say skip this one, as it adds nothing to the series. The next one is okay, but only if you accept that Peck hit the reset button.
Not So DReadful.......2001-07-03
Blossolm Culp steps into a time warp. And compared to her puney powers its amazing. IT's really suberb because it gives a funny but serius view about her life and how the future is always there. IT's Exxelent, Magnifzent and fuuny all in one.
The Dreadful Future of Blossom Culp.......2000-11-21
BOOK BLURB: 14-year old psychic Blossom Culp isn't looking forward to life in high school. Thanks to stuck-up Letty Shambaugh, Blossom's not included in the class Halloween project, so she can't help transform Old Man Leverette's place into a haunted house. What's worse is, Letty has her sights set on handsome Alexander Armsworth. Wanting to get back at Letty, Blossom secretly explores the eerie house with Alexander.
Suddenly everything goes berserk, and Blossom's hurled from 1914 into a time warp. Through her psychic powers Blossom's found a new way into the future, where she's surrounded by Valley Girls and computers. But will those powers work in reverse?

Charming and heartwarming story........2002-11-10
This is the first Carrie Bender book that I have ever read. I was not disappointed! I grew up in Amish country in Ohio, and have always been interested in the Amish. I learned a few things that I never knew about the Amish. Carries books are fantastic! I read several Beverly Lewis books and they could not hold my interest. I am looking forward to buying the other books in series and the Miriams journal series.
A charming story........2002-11-10
This is the first Carrie Bender book that I ever read. It was a great book and I am looking forward to buying all the books in the series. I read some books written by Beverly Lewis but these are the best. I recommend these books to any body interested in the Amish.
Book Description
Teenage psychic Blossom Culp finds that her powers of Second Sight are needed in both the past and the present. Will she be able to help her suffragette schoolteacher keep her job while also helping a long-dead Egyptian princess regain her tomb?
Customer Reviews:
Mummy Doom.......2004-01-07
This book starts when a new teacher comes and then this girl named Letty calls a meeting to get rid of her. In the middle of using a device used to call the spirits, Blossom calls a goddess. The goddess gives her a challenge to get her goods back to her or else she will be cursed. Can she survive this quest or will she be cursed. Find it out in this exciting book of mysteries. I recommend this book because it is very exciting and it refreshes you in the morning when your going to school because it will make you think and concentrate which will refresh you.
Improvement, but still no "Ghosts I Have Been"........2003-08-02
This is better than "Dreadful Future". Peck has restored the slow, exquisite, romantic tone of the first two installments, and the storyline is stronger, but it still doesn't rise to the level of GIHB.
I will say upfront that I adore Blossom. Her strong will, her practicality and resourcefulness make her a character that I'm frankly surprised doesn't get more press when people are recommending books for young women. But I wish there would be less emphasis on her interaction with Letty and her minions. It's really not worth her time to worry about such things in the first place, and her crude "revenge" schemes are beneath her. I liked the perspective she had in GIHB, when she observes that she could have taken over the Sunny Thoughts/Busy Fingers, but wasn't interested, because there was a wider world available to her. I like her better when she's doing her own thing and not getting drawn into petty power games.
Secondly, when is Alexander going to man up already? Every time something out of the ordinary happens, he starts whimpering and begging for mercy like a little girl. I could understand that in GIHB, when he was 13, but he's going on 15 by now, and it's about time he started showing a maturity level at least equal to Blossom's. If he doesn't, she should just forget about him.
And as far as that goes, I wasn't entirely satisfied with the resolution of that love triangle. Alexander glares at Blossom for "losing" the INB pin so he "couldn't give it to Letty"; meanwhile, she claims to see "relief in his eyes". Or, maybe she's just seeing what she wants to see. If it really is that way, Peck should have been less ambiguous and had him say, "Well, I was going to give it to you," and have Blossom's jaw hit the pavement.
I did like the suffragette teacher, and the third appearance of Old Man Leverette. But as far as that goes, where's Daisy-Rae? Okay, so maybe she didn't "work", but that underscores what I said about DF: it is best simply forgotten. Or, as Dorothy Parker said, thrown with great force.
Richard Peck Rocks.......2000-10-27
I read all of Richard Peck's books as a child and young adult, and am now getting my daughter started on them. Blossom Culp was always one of the most entertaining heroines I knew. Her world, brought to life by one of my favorite authors, was so foreign to me, and I loved and cherished every bit of her stories, as I did all of Mr. Peck's books.
Richard Peck highly recommended!.......2000-03-31
Although this may not be the best of Peck's Blossom Culp books, it is still great reading. The unlikely heroine, Blossom, has an engaging narrative style. A great book for adults as well as kids!
Blossom Culp.......2000-02-02
I thought that this was a so-so book. It was a very fact-filled book and the author clearly tried to make this book good, but it is defiantely not a Newbery. Enjoy reading the book, as some hate it and some like it.
Book Description
For generations, a love of flowers, an understanding of nature, and a knowledge of the secrets of plants has passed seamlessly from mother to daughter to granddaughter. In its deliciously entertaining text and through its beautiful photographs, A TIME TO BLOSSOM captures the essence of childhood.
Whether she is climbing an apple tree, squirming through a proper tea-party visit with an elderly neighbor, dashing to hang a May basket on a friend's door, or sitting crowded and cranky on a Sunday ride with the family, Tovah Martin's childhood memories will captivate the reader. With Richard Brown's glorious photography, A TIME TO BLOSSOM reminds us of the authors' earlier book, TASHA TUDOR'S GARDEN. The text is frank, impish, nostalgic, but never cloying or sentimental. It is a recollection of childhood with all the mischief, the mystery, and the innocence intact.
And for readers who want to enjoy their own mother and daughter flower projects, A TIME TO BLOSSOM is filled with practical instructions: How to make a hollyhock doll; weave a garland; press pansies, bake a scented geranium cake, force bulbs, dry flowers, make rose potpourri, grow a giant amaryllis, and much much more.
Customer Reviews:
True value is in its text........2003-03-01
My mom bought me this book when I had my own little girl. It sat on the coffee table as a showpiece, just because its a beautiful book. What I didn't realize at first was that it reads like a novel, too. Tovah Martin is apparently writing about her own childhood experiences with her mother in the garden, and she does so with eloquence. Her stories make me want to take notes of all the flowers and trees that shaped her earliest memories. She writes about them in such a way that I want them to become a part of my own life. I am now considering buying another Tovah Martin book.
Strikingly lovely!.......2001-12-21
Fully capturing a sense of childhood wide-eyed wonder, Ms. Martin shares with readers now and for years to come her passion for flowers and gardening. Complementing her fine text are photographs of strikingly lovely and beautiful women and girls - a beautiful tribute to mothers and daughters to parallel Ms. Martin's desire for readers to convey their love for blossoms to their own daughters. It's a beautiful book with a beautiful message.

Book Description
A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME
One of those dashing rogues too attractive to ignore, Lord Harwell featured largely in Rosalind Lovelace's fantasies. But she had too much common sense to let dreams color her reality. Harwell was a friend and neighbor--and destined to marry some Incomparable.
However, she was quite aware of his budding interest in her now that her poetry had won the attention of literary lion Lord Sylvester, whose own presence bestowed a grand dose of spring fever on Apple Hill. Love was in bloom. Most passionately in the heart of a rake who never fully appreciated the rose that had blossomed quite literally under his nose!

Great Story!.......2004-03-02
I would actually give this book 4.5 stars. I really liked the story about Laura trying to find out what happened to her father. Her search for him is very touching and you can almost feel as if you are searching for your father too! The love story part was okay. It kinda irked me how she practically fell into the arms of the guys in the story but thats just me. I also liked the parts where she was with her friends Vee, Grace, and Pansy. It really showed how a strong friendship can get you through anything, even a war. Overall its a great book and I would recommend it to anyone who likes a good love story.
Gripping tale told in a compelling voice.......1999-08-08
This novel brings to life WWII while invoking WWI. The talefollows the wartime exploits of a young woman and brings history vividlyto life. Through descriptions and a compelling voice, the author manages to weave a fascinating tale while animating history. An excellent book for those who are interested in historical events and lives of those who participated.
Superb writing and a fascinating plot.......1998-10-21
This is an authentic voice and readers will be immersed in a superbly crafted and intensely moving plot. The characters live and breathe on every page. There is love, heartbreak, mystery and genuine emotion. Unputdownable until the last surprise.
