sometimes it's too much.......2004-05-07

I've loved all the Capstick books and own and have loaned the ones I own many times, mostly to husbands of friends. But I must admit that I can only read one or two and then I have to stop for a while. Times were different then and there were lots of animals. No talk of endangered species. Today when I read about macho men slaughtering beautiful animals for sport it can get to be sickening. But, again, he is an excellent author and the books keep you on the edge of your chair. When you see the movie based on the Lions of Tsavo and have read the book - the book is soooo much more exciting. And - no love interest.

What a book, What an author!.......2004-02-26

I could not put this book down. What a sad world we live in today when there is no dark continent to explore the way that the professional hunters and wardens described in this book had to experience around the year 1900. What a sad world and what a bunch of counterfeits the Croc Hunter and Croc Dundee are. Author Capstick puts you there a hundred years ago, where prides of lions manage to devour 450 villagers before being shot, or where 30,000 elephants are shot in one country alone just to limit crop damage! These examples give you an idea of the world the hunters profiled by Capstick in this anthology of sorts walked into circa 1900 to 1940. Lions walking into huts populated with 100 sleeping people, only to leave without molesting a soul, only leaving their footprints around the myriads of sleeping African tribesman. Big cats jumping through windows to snatch infants in bassonets, toddlers grabbed off porches, the head being found a day later in the grass, Cheetahs killing humans just for the fun of it. Guns jamming and cartridges failing in the face of wounded lions. Deadly snakes, Puff adders, Black Mambas, no antidote, one example of these snakes even dropping out of trees to bite a human victim.

Make no mistake about it, Africa was all the danger you ever dreamed about and more at the turn of the last century. ANy game animal in North America is tame in comparison to the African beasts described so vividly by Capstick. Get this book and dream of an Africa unspoiled, full of game more cunning and ferocious than you, and dream about the original tribes, and the Englishmen that first made contact with them.

I will work my way through all of Capstick's books. I am hooked. This book is fanstastic.

I know Peter personaly and have hunted with him. I am in his book Sands of Silence. I highly recommend all of his books. They draw from real experiences and actively bring the reader into the wild. He loved the outdoors and his work helps preserve memories and times of people and activity that is passing away. Each book is a treasure of adventure. BL Melrose, MD

Amazing Next Step Book.......2001-06-29

I love this book! It has been definitely the best next step for my 3 1/2 year old. She has learned all the letters of the alphabet and the sounds they make, but this book introduces the capital letters and the lower case for of the letters. At first she was confused that both forms make the same letter, but after reading the book several times, she would say, "Big letter, little letter". She really got the concept. Then the author uses each letter in the rhyme on each page to bring beautiful language to describe the animal for that letter. The guessing is fun for my daughter, even after many times of reading the book. The learning can be at many levels because the illustrator has included several other animals that also begin with the same letter as the main animal on the page. The construction of the flaps is done very well. My daughter is usually rather enthusiastic while opening flaps and has ripped other books' flaps after reading it a couple of times. These flaps hold up very well and she has not ripped any of them after many, many readings. The pictures are colorful and fun to look at. I love this book!

What a beautiful book. Decorative alphabets the likes of which I've never seen fill each page. There are alphabets with animals, grotesques, classical figures, rococco, romantic, engraved, art nouveau...etc, etc, etc. Delicate, bold, frightening, beautiful - the only thing that ties them together is that they are all alphabets. Alphabets as art. I have created entire pen and ink drawings and paintings using some of these designs as part of the pattern. Definitely a 2 thumbs up.

I reviewed this book years ago for the NEW YORK TIMES--a rave review--and I'm delighted to see it available in paperback. It's one of the most delightful, enchanting books I've read in a very long time, with brilliant characterization and descriptions of Bali. I still remember it vividly and fondly. I hope it stays in print forever. Read it!

Painted Alphabet - Excellent Story.......2002-09-03

I actually picked this book up because of the beautiful cover and unique title. I don't usually pick an anonymous author, but I'm glad I did. The story was an easy read, once you get past the hard pronounciations of names and cultural words. This is a necessity to the story so is easily overlooked as I tried to pronounce these foreign terms. There are so many facets to the story that all tie together in the end in an amazingly simple way. It makes one want to visit Bali, but not the Bali of today as much as the one told about. I would recommend this book to any reader of love stories, fantastical reads, suspense or drama.

A SHIMMERING GLIMPSE INTO ANOTHER CULTURE..........2002-08-05

...and a beautiful culture it is, too -- Bali. Diana Darling has taken an ancient Balinese folktale, re-set it in modern times (allowing outside 'advanced' cultures to conflict with the peaceful nature of her exotic setting), and given the reader a treasure.

The author is very knowledgeable and sensitive to the Balinese culture and language -- and her work is an immensely compelling fable, with much for the reader to harvest, both as 'mere' entertainment and as a valuable immersion into a rich world that is so different from our own that it could easily be on another planet. The lessons are gentle and not too hard to grasp -- the love with which the Balinese people treat their environment and each other is wonderful to behold. Her characters are well-developed and entirely believable -- and the story itself, while uniquely applied to Bali, is really a universal one: good versus evil and questions about life values -- things which all of us need to consider from time to time, no matter how 'enlightened' we think we are.

This is an absolutely beautiful book -- I can recommend it highly.

Fantastic book about Humpback Whales.......2003-03-11

It is obvious that Mitsuaki Iwago went to great lengths to produce the photography he displays in this book. His photo captures of the cooperative 'bubble feeding' behavior of the humpbacks is remarkable. This type of behavior seems to be unique to the humpback whales of southeast Alaska which Mr. Iwago has done a remarkable job documenting in this book with absolutely fascinating photography. This is one book that should not be left out of any collection pertaining to whales.

Astonishing photos of humpback whales.......1998-12-27

Some of the photos in this book are the best I've ever seen of nature photography. It's a book I've enjoyed looking through many times with my son, who is now 3 years old. My only quibble is that some of the photos are too much alike, e.g., too many spouts together in one place. But I hate to say anything negative at all about such a beautiful set of pictures. There's also some useful information about humpback whales.
