5 out of 5 stars 101 Trees Of Indiana.......2007-09-28

A very functional field guide that covers basic tree information in an easy to follow format. The keys, colored pictures and descriptions are great.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Field Guide.......2007-08-10

This field guide is clear, well written and easy to use. It includes a step by step process to help you identify the type of tree you have in your woods. The pictures are accurate, not some artistic rendition or sample of the PERFECT specimen. You'll enjoy using this guide.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2007-01-04

Very useful information in an accessible format. Excellent photos of multiple identification characteristics for each tree.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent identification guide.......2005-09-29

I bought this book to learn the species of the trees in our area of southern Indiana. It does this job well.

There are usually 4-6 excellent color photographs for each entry, showing bark, leaves, stems, seeds, flowers, fruit, and overall shape of the tree. (Not all items are shown for all trees.) The most useful part of the book, however, are the identification keys. Each key uses an either/or question to lead you onward towards ultimate identification.

Example:
19. Leaves compound: Go to question 20
Leaves simple: Got to question 33

The next question leads you to succeeding questions until you finally get to the name of a genus (such as Quercus for the various oaks). Looking up the genus in the index will send you to the page, or pages, for all trees in that genus. The two-page descriptions for each individual species should allow you to identify the tree.

Unless you remember your high school biology you will need to review the introduction, where you will get a refresher course on botany as it pertains to naming and identifying trees, but the time spent will be rewarded.

Although the habitat maps are limited to Indiana, this book can still be an excellent reference for those outside the state.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Guide for Trees of Indiana.......2004-06-23

Jackson's book is well written and set forth in a useable format. It has hundreds of color photographs. The book also has multiple illustrations for each tree. I am just a beginner when it comes to tree identification and even I could use the book with few problems. It is well worth the asking price.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for those of us in Indiana who want to save the flora!.......2007-06-14

This book is an excellent source of native information. I combined it with several other books I have, along with additional photos of plants I am particularly interested in which I downloaded from Yahoo images. The only draw back to the book is that I needed more pictures to help identify the plants but as you can see, it was easily fixed!

4 out of 5 stars A much needed field guide to Indiana wildflowers.......2000-12-09

This field guide to Indiana wildflowers should be a valuable reference for both the professional and amateur botanist. The species descriptions given are adequate to distinguish similar species in most cases. The ranges given for several species appear to be inaccurate.

Blessings on the heads of the Traveler's Literary Companions folks, who figured out a magical formula: travelers like to read, and reading infinitely enhances the experience of a trip. This small, packable volume collects stories by Chilean writers and arranges them geographically from Antofagasta to Punta Arenas, in the process revealing much of Chile's mood, culture, and geography.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful photographs, culturally accurate .......2007-07-21

Although I spent a short time in Mauritania (2007)....
I did get to accompany a tribal chief into
the interior of the country and
this allowed me to observe how his tribe functioned
    on a daily basis.
I ended up buying this book
because it not only talks about a Moor child
but also a Pular child....thus depicting the lives
of 2 different tribes with balance, and as far as I can tell,
    respect....
Although it does not cover the residues of slavery in some areas
of this country,I believe the main goal of this book
is to focus on the POSITIVE aspects of the culture
whether it be white Moors or black Pulars.....
I finally bought a copy for myself as
it serves as a great memory of my time there.
I also plan to use it
as a great resource for teaching
about this area of the world to my students.
In addition, the photographs of the the Moor and Pular
children at work or at play
are really natural and gorgeous !!!
I highly recommend this beautiful children's book.

5 out of 5 stars The Children of Mauritania:Days in the Desert..........2000-05-16

Having just returned from Mauritania as a Peace Corps volunteer, I found this book culturally rich and sensitive in it's subject matter. The photographs are beautiful and depicts what life is like in Mauritania for many people. I also liked that there were two different ethnic groups explained. This is very important to understanding Mauritanian culture. For children, it is approachable and easy to follow. This is a very unique culture and the author does the richness of this culture justice in her book.

Creating beautiful, healthy bonsai is a wonderful skill that anyone can learn, with a little time, patience, and this all-inclusive manual. With color photos and drawings to illustrate the points, it introduces all the cultivation techniques; offers expert advice on location, soil types, watering, and pest control; and provides intricate instruction on training the bonsai--including pruning, wiring and stretching it. An A-to-Z guide of all the popular species showcases varieties that range from a flowering Camellia Japonica, with its beautiful smooth stem, to an easy-to-care for Olive tree. Each entry gives some background on the plant, and includes suggestions for acquiring the bonsai and directions on how to position it in the room for best results.

        Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars You can judge this book by it's cover.......2004-04-14

This may be the worst Bonsai Book ever written. The tree on the front cover is a prime example of what a Bonsai tree is not supposed to look like. The tree is a young Ficus with no taper to the trunk. The branches grow straight up and the style is all wrong. Most importantly are the horrible scars on the branches from leaving the wires on too long. The book is very generic and really doesn't give enough information to create a heathly and well trained tree. If you have shown enough interest in Bonsai to pursue more information on the Art of Bonsai then you have already outgrown this book. Avoid this book, and buy a tree instead.

4 out of 5 stars Good introductory indoor bonsai book.......2001-02-07

As stated in the title this book is about indoor bonsai, or more precisely how to grow and maintain tropical bonsai indoors. It doesn't contain much info on non tropical species, which are more appropriate to growing outdoors. There are many beautiful pictures that will inspire the beginning bonsai artist to create masterpieces of their own. Highly recommended beginners book.

3 out of 5 stars Kind of Dull.......2000-08-30

While the book offers information on some indoor and partially indoor species, I was looking for a book with more species information. The pictures were not all that great and the book in general appeared boring. It was more concise that what I was looking for. The book lacked many species that I was interested in, such as: Camphor, Baobab, Banyan, Coffee, Bald Cypress, and Buttonwood. I have ordered Bonsai in your Home: An Indoor Grower's Guide, and hopefully that will have the information I need.

5 out of 5 stars This book is my Bonsai trees' best friend........2000-06-25

I would recommend this book to every first time bonsai owner. I'm sure that if my current trees could speak, they would thank me for reading this book prior to making my bonsai selection. My first bonsai tree did not fair so well. It appears I did everything wrong the first time around. First I selected an out door tree for an indoor garden. I did not know when to trim the tree or how to fertilize. I thought all bonsai needed the same care guidelines. I was very wrong and the tree died.

I love the section on individual tree care. Now when I find a bonsai that I love, I just pull out my copy of Indoor Bonsai for Beginners: Selection, Care, Training, and find out if the tree will thrive in the location I have available. If not, I do the tree a favor and leave it for someone who has the proper location.

Thanks to this book I know which trees will fair well in an office window with only the morning sun. I know to have a drip tray, sprayer and other supplies waiting for the trees to arrive. I know to find out when the bonsai was last transplanted and fertilized. This book is definitely my Bonsai Trees' best friend and a MUST READ for anyone thinking about owning a bonsai. Just do your tree a favor and read it before you make your tree selection.

This is an excelent book about indoor bonsai. I've been buying books looking for tips in selection, care and training of indoor bonsais but most of the authors insist that this is an outdoor activity. In Indoor Bonsai for Beginners I found helpful information and a lot of pictures and drawings

            Book Description

Here, in words and brilliant color photos, are the basics of indoor plant care, presented especially for those who have little or no experience tending plants. Of primary importance is proper location—the best rooms in the house for specific plants. Readers are instructed about flora, native to different climates, that have varying sunlight requirements. Some hardy specimens are immune to drafts and temperature changes that will wither a more delicate plant. Readers will also find advice on when and how to water plants, as well as information on fertilizing, re-potting, propagating, and protecting against plant pests and diseases. A beautifully illustrated directory of more than 100 plants follows, showing everything from cacti to orchids. Each example is labeled with its common name and botanical name, and includes brief advice on care. Supplementary pictograms indicate each plant's sunlight, watering, and fertilizing requirements. Poisonous plants that may pose a danger to pets and children are also labeled. The book's additional features include ideas for attractive and functional planters, advice on creating colorful plant arrangements, and sidebars presenting added tips in capsule form. Nearly 300 color photos.

                    Book Description

This is the first commentary to be written in English on Seneca's Phoenissae, an intriguing work on account of its unusual structure and state of incompletion. The substantial introduction deals, inter alia, with the question of the unity and purpose of the work; the absence of an ending and of choral lyrics; the philosophical, rhetorical, and political content; Seneca's treatment of the Theban legend. The commentary is primarily a literary analysis of the text, but textual, linguistic, metrical, and grammatical difficulties are also elucidated. With the resurgence of interest in Senecan drama in the last two decadese, this book is a valuable addition to English commentaries that appeared on most of the plays.

                    Book Description

The Dramatic Imagination is one of the few enduring works written about set design.
Robert Edmond Jones's innovations in set design and lighting brought new ideas to the stage, but it is greater understanding of design - its role at the heart of theater - that has continued to inspire theater students. The volume includes "A New Kind of Drama," "To a Young Stage Designer" and six other of Jones's "reflections."

Received in record time and in great condition for a used book. In fact you couldn't tell that it was used at all.

4 out of 5 stars take it with an open mind.......2000-11-17

OK, you can't rate this book on the level of literature, cuz it's not. From that point of view it's horrible. But you can rate it on what it might teach you if you let it "speak to you." This is a book that can easily be taken two ways. 1) An inspiring look at theater and at life, and 2) the cheesiest, corniest, campiest thing ever. I myself have wondered at times how I really feel about this book. I have had it read it throughout this past quarter for my Stagecraft class, and it can say a whole lot or it can say nothing, depending on how you read it. The author's absolute passion for all aspects of theater often comes across as wishy-washy, but if you set that aside, you might, if you love theater, find that you can relate to what he is saying. Or you might make fun of it incessantly! Which I have done a few times. But seriously, it's the kind of book that if you tell yourself you'll take a lot out of it, you will. And in several ways, I have.

4 out of 5 stars a wonderful book to have on the shelf.......1999-09-06

my set design professor described this as the book to read when one is disillusioned with theater and need to restore faith, and I have to agree. It reminds us of the total art of theater, where poetry is expressed verbally, visually, and through the _presence_ of actors in a setting. It describes the curious not-reality that theater should create. It was written in 1941, so some of the references ring a little false and the language can wax florid, but the essence of what theater should be is described here.
