Book Description

With more than 300 photos, this new edition shows how to identify more than 500 healing plants. Descriptive text includes information on where the plants are found, as well as their known medicinal uses. An index to medical topics, symbols next to plant descriptions, and organization of plants by colors all make this an essential guide to understanding the traditional medicinal uses of the plants around us. At a time when interest in herbs and natural medicine has never been higher, the second edition of this essential guide shows how to identify more than five hundred kinds of healing plants. More than three hundred new color photos illustrate their flowers, leaves, and fruits. The updated descriptive text includes information on where the plants are found as well as their known medicinal uses. An index to medical topics is helpful for quickly locating information on specific ailments, from asthma and headaches to colds and stomachaches. Symbols next to plant descriptions give readers a quick visual alert to plants that are poisonous or may cause allergic reactions. Organized by plant color for fast identification, this guide is an indispensable tool for understanding the traditional medicinal uses of the plants and herbs around us.

5 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE in yoru library.......2007-09-23

This is another book I am constantly referencing. It is small enough to pack in your backpack or coat pocket if you want to identify plants in the wild.
Steven Foster also provides clear photographs to make it far easier to determine the plants.

The descriptions are good and have helped me several times identify plants in my region.

5 out of 5 stars THE Standard, Of Course.......2006-09-24

The best of its genre, and the standard in visual identification guides for field work and species' recognition. Almost every item is illustrated with color photographs, though I wish there were more images of each item, for year-round accurate ID. If I could afford to, I'd own the entire publication list of "A Field Guide To...". :-)

I'll share a secret to successful purchasing. I borrow books & titles I'm interested in buying, from local library--this has proven the BEST method for being sure one's needs & expectations are met, especially in non-fiction reference materials.

This is excellent reading at home and on the go. You'll want to buy two of these just so you have one at home, and one you can really rough handle on the road. :) If you're into medicinal herbs or you just love knowing what's what out in the wild, this guide is number one! A MUST! You need it now.

5 out of 5 stars Most Interesting Book You'll Ever Find!!.......2001-01-15

This book was so fabulous, in fact, I give it more than five stars, I give it twenty! It is because of this book that I now want to be an ethnobotanical chemisist. This book has such pep and drive, just the Introduction and Preface make you want to go outside start a weed garden, picket the FDA, and go to college for seven years to get your degree in botanical chemistry. You don't believe me, but I'm serious. READ THIS BOOK! If not the whole book, at least the Introduction and Preface. It'll give you SO much energy.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding field guide with uses, drawings and photos.......1998-07-13

This is one of the better field guides available for identifying and determining the usefulness of many medicinal plants found commonly in the Eastern and Central US. This guide is recommended for beginners and experienced medicinal plant enthusiasts alike. A must have book for the novice in this field.

4 out of 5 stars Kept it on the seat next to me!.......2004-11-16

I had 21 days to drive New England this Fall with no set itinerary and needed a good guide. I wanted to avoid the Interstates and get a feel for the places I visited. This book never left my side. I solo drove three of the book's routes: the Coastal New England route from Mass to northern Maine (rte 1), the Great North Woods route (rte 2) from New Hampshire to Vermont, and the Green Mtns, Berkshires route (rte 7) from Vermont to Danbury, Conn. This book got a page-by-page workout as I developed my daily plan then adapted if something caught my eye. It was used in conjunction with Frommers New England's Best-Loved Driving Tours, which I found equally useful. This book is out-of-date on lodging prices, as expected, since publication in 2001. Also, a few recommended sites/motels have gone bust. On the plus side, its practical route layout combining scenic sites, historical/cultural sites, towns(with history/tips), affordable eateries, spot-on descriptions and personal perspective was invaluable. Buy this book and start exploring.

5 out of 5 stars Getting There is All the Fun!.......2003-07-03

I am enamoured with this book! I am planning my first trip to New England in August and this book makes usually dull trip preparations exciting.

Jensen sets out 5 separate road trips through New England, including a coastal route, several mountain routes, the Cape Cod trip, and an Appalachian trail route. We are planning to take the coastal route 1 and then route 3 through the White Mountains in New Hampshire.

So far, all of Jensen's advice has been excellent. His lodging suggestions are affordable and up to date. He makes a point to highlight historic and unusual places that are representative of New England. I can't wait to go on the trip and report back!

Edited: Just got back from the trip and it was fantastic. A few highlights--The Maine Idyll Motel (a group of log cabins in Freeport Maine); Acadia National Park; Camden, ME; and all of the roadside diners and blueberry picking. Enjoy your trip!

In an one of a kind historically focused travel guide, Robert and Patricia Foulke provide readers with chapters of worthwhile travel destinations focused on experiencing colonial American history. Each chapter highlights the historic colonial sites for the original thirteen states, plus more, which you can visit today. In addition to towns, buildings, monuments, battlefields, forts, museums, and touristy historical attractions, some well known and some yet to be discovered, you're provided with unique period accommodation recommendations in the area if you're looking to savor the historical experience. Despite being published eleven years ago, the essential travel information and destinations are still very much useful today.

With so many reminisces of our colonial past still surviving today, it is an arduous task to compile every single site into one book and even though most popular tourist sites are mentioned, some significant authentically colonial sites were neglected by the Foulkes.
Such as the case with South Carolina, the state with the most Revolutionary War battle sites, of which not one is listed in the book. Surely Camden, Ninety Six ,and Cowpens should not be missed if visiting South Carolina's colonial history. The same goes for Thomas Jefferson's second home, Poplar forest in Virginia or Historic Brattonsville in SC, a 750 acre impressively restored colonial village and plantation, an exquisite relic of colonial America that should not be overlooked either. Overall "Colonial America, A Traveler's Guide" details ample travel information for enjoying and discovering a rich and proud history during a time that gave birth to the greatest country on Earth.

Just chock-full of photographed samples of brochures. There are many styles represented, including photographic, illustrative, and typographic. The brochures are for the most part very colorful and creative. It's always nice to have samples to flip through when you're looking for inspiration or a possibile direction to go in with a design you're working on. This book is also useful for showing to your clients, to help get a feel what type of brochure they might be looking for or what styles they are drawn to. I enjoy having this book in my collection.

4 out of 5 stars Food for thought for first-time cat caretakers.......2007-03-21

Although Milani's book seems to be more focused on purebred cats than shelter cats, the questions she asks are just as useful for people considering the adoption of a cat from the shelter or a kid at the grocery store parking lot. Adopting a cat is a commitment that can last up to 20 years or more, and Milani gives potential cat caretakers a chance to realistically assess how prepared they are for this commitment. A good read.

              1 out of 5 stars "Catstupid".......2003-10-26

I agree with the other reviewers. I checked this book out at the library to learn more about my favorite animal. I was disgusted by a great deal of the book. As a cat shelter volunteer, I can tell you that many, many wonderful pets can be found inside the shelter. Many cats end up there not because they were behavior problems, but because the owner didn't want to bother with them anymore, were moving, or got a new baby and didn't have time for the cat. These cats end up at the shelter through no fault of their own and deserve a great home. I shudder to think of how many naive readers would look at this book and automatically think breeder=good cat, and shelter=bad cat. Perhaps the vet should spend some time volunteering at a shelter herself before she makes such blanket statements. I also found it interesting that the only comment she makes on declawing is a positive one and mentions nothing about the cruel procedure it actually is. A truly informed veternarian would present both sides of the story and be honest about the details. (Of course, she makes more money when cats are brought in to be declawed, so it's not surprising she would keep quiet on the truth on this procedure!) Read this book if you would like to learn how to be CATSTUPID...otherwise, I recommend passing it by.

              1 out of 5 stars CatSmart, OwnerStupid?.......1999-09-27

Would you take your pet to a veterinarian who seemed to care little about cats? Then read this book.

Other reviewers have mentioned many of _CatSmart_'s flaws, so I won't repeat them here, but I will add a few. First, Milani seems to believe that cats, as a rule, should be allowed outside (and she gives her own free roam). I have yet to hear of a veterinarian or other animal professional who would, in all seriousness, recommend this! Cats face very real dangers outside, and making the choice to allow them out is almost certainly making the choice to give them a shorter lifespan. I could find no mention in the book of the pros and cons of sending cats outdoors.

Second, as others have pointed out, she strongly recommends buying only purebred cats from reputable breeders. She asserts that cats from shelters invariably have behavioral problems (as if purebred cats never do?); and she implies that "so-called 'no-kill' shelters" are even worse than the standard kind, since they couldn't possibly have the resources to adequately care for their cats. Thus, in two paragraphs, she brushes off the millions of unwanted cats who die every year - many of whom are perfectly healthy, well-adjusted creatures - and steers potential pet owners to buy cats only from those who breed cats for profit. To me, this doesn't imply that Milani cares a great deal about cats.

Aside from a few useful tidbits - such as tips on using double-sided tape to deter cats from forbidden areas, and reducing their intake of food by feeding them smaller amounts more often - this guide is largely useless. Worse, it may be harmful to the well-being of cats - which sort of defeats the purpose, doesn't it?

              1 out of 5 stars A Waste of Time.......1999-09-14

Milani's tedious, boring writing style made this book a chore to read. Her attempts at warmth and humor seem stilted and not natural. I also found the information in this book to be rehashed versions of previously released cat books.

I also fault the editor of this book for allowing Milani to labor on in such long paragraphs without giving the reader a break.

If you're new to the world of cats or you're searching for help with a problem, I highly recommend that you check out Pam Johnson's book "Twisted Whiskers".

2 out of 5 stars New Approach - Bad Format.......1999-08-13

Milani's book definitely had the potential to make you really think about your relationship with your cat. The problem was the format was so bad you ended up just skipping over the long, involved questions provided for you. The book has some really good information for new and experienced cat owners alike. However, unless you are really dedicated to reading the book, most likely you'll lose interest.

Below are the main problems I found with the text:

*Almost all cases she followed were purebreds. All sorts of different owners, but only purebred cats. She fails to take into account that 90% of cat owners own mixed-breed cats.

*She presents the mixed breed cat as inferior to a purebred and states the view that cats adopted from a shelter rather than bought from a breeder have more behavioral and psychological problems. The short amount of time she spent on animal shelters was merely to warn people not to adopt an animal there. The author claimed that the animals end up there because they have behavioral problems. She also states that most cats in shelters have litterbox problems. She gives no data to back up these sweeping statements, and in fact the number one reason animals end up in shelters is OWNER PROBLEMS (moving, allergic, costs too much).

*The format of the book was hard to read. Lots of information was packed into long paragraphs with no illustrations, charts or graphs. With a better layout the good information she provides could be noted rather than passed over.

Great month-to-month guide specifically for the desert southwest. Each month tells you what to look out for, and how to prepare for the coming months. This book was somewhat limited in extent. Ruled margins provide a great place to take notes and personalize the book in respect to your own gardening experience. Overall, a good buy.

                  Book Description

"Music and girls are the soul of musical comedy," one critic wrote, early in the 1940s. But this was the age that wanted more than melody and kickline form its musical shows. The form had been running on empty for too long, as a formula for the assembly of spare parts--star comics, generic love songs, rumba dancers, Ethel Merman. If Rodgers and Hammerstein hadn't existed, Broadway would have had to invent them; and Oklahoma! and Carousel came along just in time to announce the New Formula for Writing Musicals: Don't have a formula. Instead, start with strong characters and atmosphere: Oklahoma!'s murderous romantic triangle set against a frontier society that has to learn what democracy is in order to deserve it; or Carousel's dysfunctional family seen in the context of class and gender war. With the vitality and occasionally outrageous humor that Ethan Mordden's readers take for granted, the author ranges through the decade's classics--Pal Joey, Lady in the Dark, On the Town, Annie Get Your Gun, Phinian's Rainbow, Brigadoon, Kiss Me, Kate, South Pacific. He also covers illuminating trivia--the spy thriller The Lady Comes Across, whose star got so into her role that she suffered paranoid hallucinations and had to be hospitalized; the smutty Follow the Girls, damned as "burlesque with a playbill" yet closing as the longest-run musical in Broadway history; Lute Song, in which Mary Martin and Nancy Reagan were Chinese; and the first "concept" musicals, Allegro and Love Life. Amid the fun, something revolutionary occurs. The 1920s created the musical and the 1930s gave it politics. In the 1940s, it found its soul.

3 out of 5 stars The Stars Shone ON Broadway With Songs........2006-09-01

The American musical on Broadway is invented in the 1920s, suffers an artistic setback in the financially oppressed and conservative 1930s, but at last reflowers for good in the 1940s. This is called the Golden Age of drama and music bonded together. Before, it was fit but primitive; it has become rich and sophisticated and has status, a powerful economic base, and became known globally important, like Coca Cola. The musical is American: democratic, fast-moving, and innovative.

They started as "revues" with a multitude of stars, like Jane Froman from Missouri, Ray Bolger, Jimmy Durante, Jackie Gleason, Ilka Chase (seems I remember seeing her on a game show in the 50s), Emmet Kelly, Ed Wynn, and Eddie Cantor. Eddie was in "Banjo Eyes" and was nicknamed such because of his outlandish makeup a la Al Jolson in the minstrels. Eddie was my star member of the Fisher Notes, the Eddie Fisher fanclub. Cantor is the person responsible for discovering Eddie in the Catskills and making him known to the teenbobbers of America. In the early 40s, Carol Channing was Dolly in "Hello Dolly" (one of Chuck's favorite songs to play) and Ethel Merman, the one with the very loud voice, was Gypsy Rose Lee's Mama in "Gypsy." She went from "Girl Crazy" in 1930 to "Gypsy" in 1959. A long career on Broadway and in the movies/

Some of the best songs came from this era: "Wunderbar," "So In Love," "Happy Talk," "This Nearly Was Mine," "Brush Up Your Shakespeare," and "A Cockeyed Optimist" are some examples of the variety in the Broadway musicals. The greatest was "Soliloquy" in 'Carousel,' and "Oh What A Beautiful Morning" from 'Oklahoma,' formerly the drama named "Green Grow the Lilacs." 'South Pacific' won the Pultizer Prize for drama but had some fantastic musical numbers. I loved the Irish 'Brigadoon' of the lost Shangrila which comes alive only one day each year. I loved Howard Keel as he appeared in 'The Vagabond King,' and Gene Kelly in 'On The Town.' 'Finiagan's Rainbow' was another Irish tale with jolly songs. "Only Make Believe" in 'Showboat' was moving and real. And who could ever forget 'Kiss Me Kate." There were black musicals totally like 'Carmen Jones,' and 'Cabin in the Sky.'

Helen Morgan was great in 'Showboat" (Howard Keel was the male star in the movie) and Mary Martin shone as nurse Forbush in 'South Pacific.' These are just a few of the music shows we will always remember, as those songs are still played on the radio today. The Forties on Broadway was just the beginning as things picked up considerably in the Fifties, and these were made into Technicolor movies for us who loved music to enjoy in air-conditioned comfort.

2 out of 5 stars A lot of air but little substance.......2000-03-24

Ethan Mordden's theater-related writing has been on a steady decline, especially in this verbose and increasingly obtuse decade by decade series on 20th century Broadway musicals. It has reached a point where once can learn more about musicals from Mordden's fiction. Come on Mr. Mordden -- we came to expect much more from you than this kind of tired rehash.

4 out of 5 stars Another masterpiece, even when walking the edge.......1999-10-22

Ethan Mordden is my favorite author of all time -- his breadth and depth of knowledge and critical acumen are utterly unsurpassed among writers on vintage American popular culture. In this book as in all of his others, the way he can, in a few quick, masterful strokes, make you feel like you are at an obscure, unrecorded musical which now exists only as yellowing files in a few libraries is nothing less than astounding. His combination of erudtion, wit and insight never fail to take my breath away. The decade-by-decade series of which this book is the third helps make life worth living, this one helping make sense of a particularly challenging ten years in musicals' history. Near the end, Mordden does indulge in some nervy speculations that could use some more backup, though. Was homophobia really the reason WHERE'S CHARLEY didn't get a cast album? If Porter's music for KISS ME, KATE was so good because he knew the score would be preserved on a record, then why didn't he keep writing at this level afterwards? Since SOUTH PACIFIC came at the end of the decade, we'd like it to be an apotheosis of the developments over that time, but would we really say that of this fine but chunky piece of work if it had come along in 1945? If the invention of the cast album was really why shows started running longer, then why have runs continued getting even longer since? Yet Mordden is such a treasure that one simply takes these as questions you wish you could take up with the master. Overall, no one writing in his bailiwick even approaches him; this book, like all of his work, is a national treasure.

                        Book Description

There are not too many histories of Aboriginal reserves that have something good to say of them. But the Burrage children, Winifred, Alan and Elsie, recall the world of their childhood as a happy one. A Life Together, a Life Apart is a collaborative autobiography and an oral narrative as well as a history. The vivid recollections of Winifred Burrage, Alan Burrage and Elsie Stokie form its centrepiece. In an introductory essay Bain Attwood sketches the background to the reserves, and discusses the different histories we have of relations between Europeans and Aborigines in Australia.
