Customer Reviews:
From the Author.......2006-01-06
As for Ms. Schrums review:
The sunflower was chosen by the Publisher and I had no control over it or had input into it.
I have proof I'd gladly send you that I contacted each and every person in my Acknowledgements.
Also, if the nomenclature is incorrect its because either my data I collected straight from the Department of Natural Resources or from the PLANTSdatabase is incorrect. I'll gladly make any changes the society thinks is wrong with it, and I have said this for over a month and still no one has told me what is exactly wrong with it.
I worked well over a year and a half over the data and triple checked my data with professionals. Contact me via email and I will happily forward each email with each individual in the acknowledgements to show you that they have indeed spoken to me. Most were contacted in 2004 when I did the research and writing for the book.
Sorry... But it's full of errors.......2006-01-06
I have seen this book, which was circulated amongst of group of native plant professionals, all of whom had severe criticism for the work.
The problems start out with the cover which pictures an annual sunflower that is not native to Georgia. The nomenclature on several plants is incorrect and the acknowledgements page lists people who were not consulted and had no idea they were listed.
The professionals mentioned are compiling a list of the errors which will be forwarded to the author and editor.
There are much better books available. I would start with books by Jan Midgley, Margie Hunter and the Duncan's (Wilbur and Marion).
SUPER BOOK!!.......2005-12-28
This is the greatest put together book about Georgia plants I've seen. It is laid out so nicely and informatively. The author of this one really did a GREAT job getting the info. together and putting the book together. I bought 2 so I could give one as a gift to someone that I knew would also love it and she did! She's called me several times thanking me for it and telling me how wonderful the book is also. Thanks!

Superb First Book.......2003-08-04
If you are looking for your fist guide book then this is great. I was born in the UK and know the lakes fairly well, having walked many of the hills. I bought this guide for a trip in 2004 as I havent been in the UK since 1997.
It is a superb pocket book with snippets about most things. The maps is pretty basic, so get yourself a nice Ordnance Survey map 1:25,000 or 1:12500 when you arrive.
Excellent, easy to carry little book!.......2000-05-10
I am VERY pleased with the Berlitz Lake District Pocket Guide. It is a small, compact little book but is nonetheless clear and easy to read. Unlike many guide books, the paragraphs are well deliniated and the desired information about specific locations is easy to find. The photos are of good quality and the fold-out maps on front and back cover are especially handy. I am pleased to find such a comprehensive guidebook for this region without having to purchase a large and cumbersome tourbook with lots of unwanted information. I highly reccommend this little book for those who are considering travel to this beautiful corner of the world!

Compilation available of Pharaohs, Knights, Vikings and Roma.......2003-02-19
I would recommend also looking at the compiliation called "Time Traveler" which includes all the four books: Pharoahs and Pyramids, Rome and Romans, Viking Raiders and Knights and Castles.
Overall the Usborne books contain fairly detailed drawings and provide overhead views and maps. For instance a typical Viking eating hall, will have captions that points out who the people are, what food is cooked and how.
The narrative line of the Time Traveler is burdensome. A character goes back in time!! Whoo-hoo. But you can ignore it easy enough. In the Pharoh book I lost track of who was related to who and what they did in that family. I just skip a lot of these more nuanced particulars as I am reading the book to a 4 year old. That said I and my son have enjoyed them and learned.
Terrific Presentation!.......2002-06-18
Like all of the Usborne books of this type, the learning possiblities are great and encourage further investigation of the topics in the book.
This book is set in the time of the New Kingdom, which was the height of prosperity and power in ancient Egypt.
The book, through its simple text and drawings, explains daily life at that time, as well as agriculture, religion, and war.
Long-fascinated by the Egyptian belief in the spirit world and their burial rites, I found these topics well-explained. I myself learned a lot from this book.
It also explains hieroglyphics and the construction of the famous pyramids. Detailed drawings of every new concept makes learning painless --these illustrations show the amount and quality of the research that is done by the Usborne writers.
Where can I get the Nile map on a poster?.......2001-04-01
What a surprising combination of a book that actually is much better than expected and yet disappointing. The introduction of the book is great, leading the children towards apprehension of time, and the map of the Nile is a winner, wish I had it as a poster! Through the book the pictures could though often do with a more work on them, it's like some of the pages aren't fully made. And some photos show informations you wish the text told the children about. But the book does a better job helping them to coprihend the everyday life than any other I've seen, and it's just when it comes to religion and the pharaoh than it becomes a bit disappointing. When working with the 6 to 10 years old on Egypt it was the religious sermonises that got to them. And I just can't help but think how can such a good book miss the opportunity to introduce the Canopic Jars, and then ... WHY ON EARTH ARE THE EGYPTIANS COLORED SO LIGHT SKINNED???
Well done.......2000-12-27
Although drawn more in the style of cartoons than encyclopaedia illustrations, the pictures are clear and often lovely. This book gives children a good look into the life of ancient Egyptians.
An illustrated glimpse of Egypt.......2000-10-05
Are your children or students researching Egypt? This is a great book to add to their collection. Pharaohs and Pyramids touches every part of Egyptian life - religion, government, leisure, Pharaohs, pyramids, burial, etc. The information is presented in narrative form with scenes from the life of an Egyptian boy named Nakht. You go where Nakht goes, and see what Nakht sees, and you get an glimpse of Ancient Egypt along the way. The illustrations are great. My only criticism is that some of the illustrations are inappropriate -skimpy outifts and the like, but I solved the problem with a permanent magic marker!

Book Description
In this captivating and heartwarming book, America's premier pet columnist, Michael Capuzzo, shares astonishing true tales celebrating the unique and unbreakable relationship between people and their cats. Drawn from history and literature as well as from cat lovers--both famous and not so famous-- from all walks of life all over the world, here are unforgettable tales that take us behind the cool, independent facade of the cat to reveal the sweet, sensitive, devoted creature within. Here are just a few of the cats guaranteed to catch your heart:
Priscilla, who meowed at her apartment door for two days. Finally her owners thought to check on their elderly neighbor and discovered that she had broken her hip and was unable to move.
Pearl and Skittles, the Keystone Cats, who watched over their household with total vigilance. Any problem--a clogged drain in the kitchen, a stereo left on at night--and they sounded the alarm, waking everyone in the house.
Murry, the cat who became the constant companion and protector of a young boy suffering from cystic fibrosis. His devotion was so great that when the boy's health began to fail, Murry seemed to lose his own will to live.
Nicholas, who every day fed the family pit bull; he jumped up on the kitchen table, grabbed a dog bone, and dropped it down to his pal. Later each day, as if to repay Nicholas, the pit bull happily licked the cat's head for ten minutes.
Subway, the beautiful orange tabby who not only survived being shot with a shotgun, but later, apparently killed in an accident, jumped out of the box he was to be buried in and frolicked among the guests at his own funeral.
In Cat Caught My Heart you will see cats in all their glory--their unique personalities, their irrepressible spirits, their gentle souls. You'll laugh at their antics, weep at their passing, and thank the heavens that these remarkable creatures are part of our lives.
From the Hardcover edition.

Book Description
A Nobel Prize-winning playwright's classic tale of tragic decisions in a traditional African culture. Based on events that took place in Oyo, an ancient Yoruba city of Nigeria, in 1946, Wole Soyinka's powerful play concerns the intertwined lives of Elesin Oba, the king's chief horseman; his son, Olunde, now studying medicine in England; and Simon Pilkings, the colonial district officer. The king has died and Elesin, his chief horseman, is expected by law and custom to commit suicide and accompany his ruler to heaven. The stage is set for a dramatic climax when Pilkings learns of the ritual and decides to intervene and Elesin's son arrives home.
Customer Reviews:
A good intro to the work of this winner of Nobel Prize for Literature .......2007-01-30
This is a definate must read. Written as a poetic play, Soyinka captures the Yoruba experience during the British occupation of Nigeria. It captures their perception of their colonizers, their religious ideologies in sharp contrast with that of the British, their political stance including about Yoruba persons who worked for the British at the time(hence, the mimic men/women) and their trauma and lamentations regarding the slave trade. The title refers to a specific issue that main protagonists will struggle with, leading to the Yoruba/British clash of religious and political ideologies. The result unveils the hypocracy of forced-conversion and explores issues of (in)humanity, suicide and freedom by examining each group's relationship with their leaders, their understanding of the divine God(s) and destiny. This book is one of the texts used in African literature classes.
Death and the King's Horseman.......2004-05-07
Soyinka both entertains and asks subtle questions about mass psychology, individual psychology, and universal human struggles of the will.
Western Ignorance and Centrcity Imposing Itself On Africa.......2003-04-15
In this play Soyinka gives such roundness to his characters that it is hard for some to decipher their goodness or "badness" as characters. The play is a story of the western colonizers' failure to recognize African culture as substantial. The play deals with the Yoruba religion and a specific ritual that is thwarted by an ignorant colonizer who does so for reasons traced back to ethnocentricity and racism. The man who is deemed to kill himself is pitied by the westerners and this shows their hippocrisy. By demanding that suicide was immoral and could not be a spiritual endeavor they denied the status of one of the most important men to grace Western Civilization with their presence: Jesus Christ. Christ gave himself away the same way that the character in this play does and did so for spiritual reasons that transcended himself.
THe play gives great insight into African culture and builds with intensity to a hugely climatic ending that is rewarding for the reader to experience.
One Great Writer.......2000-05-25
At a university seminar in the US recently, Prof. Soyinka was asked to respond to charges by certain critics that his writing wasn't 'African' enough. He responded, saying "The people who say these things, I refer to as neo-Tarzanists, people whose Africa is the Africa of Tarzan, swinging from tree to tree. That's not my Africa", he said, to a standing, thunderous ovation. It is difficult to imagine a writer in English today with a wider grasp of the language. Some of his work is unbelievable - metaphor, irony, the supernatural, interwoven with tragedy, lyricism, and language. Top-draw.
A review for Mr Helle.......2000-04-24
Hello! And welcome to my review of Wole Soyinka's Death and the King's Horseman. In my opinion the book lacked suspense, a characteristic I admire in a piece of work. It wasn't completly mundane but neither was it the kind of book I can't put down once I start reading. What I did in fact like about this play was Soyinka's use of language. The characters in the play expressed themselves through Soyinka's thoughtful words. There were some passages that stuck with you even after reading the play. For instance "There is only one home to the life of a river-mussel; there is only one home to the life of a tortoise; there is only one shell to the soul of a man: there is only one world to the spirit of our race. If that world leaves it's course and smashes on boulders of the great void, whose world will give us shelter?" That right there is one of my favorite passages. When reading this play expect more of these philosophical character monologues. The play also had some situational irony. Some roles were reversed while others were forgotten. It also introduced you the culture and traditions of Africa. The tension builds throughout the play and explodes in the end. But I don't want to give it all away. If you like the kind of pieces which explore foriegn cultures than this might be your bag. Personally I wouldn't have read this book if I didn't have to.Anyways thanks for reading my review...I'm out!
