Great Book.......2007-05-19
I think this book is a real good one! And I recommend it to everybody who's interested in history, culture, etc. I went to Tokyo and Kyoto with it, and I was able to understand many things, and to see a lot!
There's great pictures, detailed map, and smart comments. The author really understand the country from the inside.
Excellent book !
Updated? or OUTDATED!!.......2006-08-17
I have been here in Japan for almost 9 years.
First of all, the pictures and the fashion is out of date. The trends that the "ko-gal" is wearing was back in 2000 when it was "in". How come the meaning of the outfit isn't explained? Only says that "changing fashions reflect greater independence for women"?! Even though only 15% of the youngsters wore the outfit that is shown. Fashion is out of date, and why is the minor part of the fashion is explained as if its the most major trend. Lack of explaination is seen.
Second, I was looking forward for the Hiroshima section, though only a page is written on it. People say it takes more than a day to travel around the area but from reading, theres actually nothing that had caught my eyes because all of the places are only the basics. There are a lot more I can point out however I won't because it is a waste of my time since it is not my obligation to do so. Maybe more observation is needed for a true updated book.

Excellent guidebook!.......2004-03-28
"Japan (The National Geographic Traveler)" is an above-average guidebook for those doing a tour of Japan, or for those who are interested in what Japan has to offer. Utilizing the National Geographic's excellent collection of photographs and information, they have assembled one of the most eye-popping and enticing guides to Japan that I have seen, and I have seen quite a few of them.
The various regions of Japan are well-covered, with an emphasis on major locations, sights and activities. There is not much "off-the-beaten" path type of information, but that is not what this kind of guide is for. The locations that are covered are covered very well, with both information, best times to visit and so one. Wisely, there is little in the way of pricing information, as this is quickly outdated. The experience of National Geographic is well-leveraged, giving a more informed picture over the "Eyewitness" guides.
I recommend this guide to anyone who is interested in or considering a trip to Japan, but is somewhat unfamiliar with the country and what it has to offer. There is plenty here to pique your interest.
Outstandingly beautiful book, yet information-packed.......2001-03-12
Whoever glances through this book will automatically be stunned by the top-notch pictures that reveals the scenery of today's Japan. By saying so, I shall break the neck to a widespread idea in Western countries that Japan is merely an industrial dump with Mt Fuji overlooking it. One has to acknowledge that this (false) statement is true in Tokyo and Osaka-Kobe, but the 95% portion of the country remaining is just scenic, as portrayed in the book.
National Geographic's long experience in combining excellent information feedback and outstanding pictures, has resulted in this series "National Geographic Traveler" that revolutionizes the way to dicover far-away countries and cultures.
I very strongly recommand you to buy this book as soon as you're slightly keen on Japan and its culture. I'm now planning a trip there for next summer!!!

Polarities are passe.......2002-05-18
Jan Clausen reasons carefully through essentialist vs. constructionist views of homosexuality. "Natural" and "universal" sexuality are examined, especially in light of other cultures' more open views toward a "sliding scale" of sexual expression. This is a careful set of ideas beautifully expressed: Careful to take readers through issues such as whom one has sex with, who is emotionally most important, which acts one chooses as "sexuality," how sexual identity in relation to biological sex might be modified by choice of occupation and dress, etc. Clausen is not afraid of "confusion" on these issues. She wants us to think about either-or thinking in our sexual categories. She helps us to think about passages in humanity's sexual history and the times & places of personal sexual expression in profound ways. A good deal of her reasoning focuses on how, where, and why some cultures see boundaries between "male" & "female" sexual expression as fluid or rigid. She argues that far from fixed, sexuality is the burden of freedom. This is a wonderful, thought-provoking book, still relevant in a time when religionists denounce sexual choices as sin and damnation and some gay theorists speak of getting "beyond gay." Its tone and its stories reflect the profound truths of a PFLAG (Parents, Family, & Friends of Lesbians & Gays) dictum in a pamphlet written for helping young people who are questioning their sexuality: The youth asks, "How can I tell if I'm gay?" The PFLAGers answer is: "You'll know when you know." There is profound compassionate counsel in that simple PFLAG statement, and there is compassionate examination of all human sexuality in Jan Clausen's Beyond Gay or Straight: Understanding Sexual Orientation. I love this book. I share this book with many people who are SERIOUS about sexual expressions.

Lush, gorgeous feast of colour and beauty as only the Regency could provide.......2005-09-17
All my congratulations to John Morley - he has provided an enormous volume - full of lush illustrations, good background information and a great browsing volume of Regency Design
Following what is popularly known as teh extended regency, or late Georgian period John Morley uses the period of 1790-1840 which covers the end of George III's reign (and the regency period of 1811-1820), the reign of King George IV, William IV and first few years of Victoria. This early part of the century is the start of the great industrial years, the increasing population in Britain, and increasing wealth.
What I loved best about this book is its easy reference. It is divded into four sections, Parks and Gardens, Exterior Architecture, interior decoration, and Furniture. Within each section looking at the formative incluences, styles, and how they manifested.
Each chapter has good explanatory commentary, and is well illustrated. The only other book I can really compare this to is one I have read by Steven Parrisen which also done excellent works on Regency architecture. This book covers a great deal more in one volume which I felt allowed a broader depth of understanding of the style. It would be really nice to include two other sections (I think) one of food, and one of clothing. I daresay to do that there would be a great deal more to have to add as well and this book would need to double in size.
Nice reference book, good for browsing through too.
Regency Design.......2000-09-26
John Morley's Regency Design offers a wealth of information for anyone seeking an indepth resource on the Regency Style. The organization of the information makes it easy for the reader to follow and locate specific areas of interests. Parks, Gardens, Exterior Architecture, Interior Design and Furniture are all included with generous amount of illustrations. Morley's Regency Style is now in my company's design library as the recommended sourch for Regency Style research. I highly recommend this book for design professionals, instructors and anyone interested in the study of classical styles.

You May Be Dissapointed.......2002-12-22
If you have the book 'The American Pit Bull Terrier' by Jacqueline O'Neil you will be very dissapointed with this book. The Essential Pit Bull is basically just a revision of the O'Neil APBT(American Pit Bull Terrier) book with different pictures and a tiny bit added(but mostly it's all just rearranged). The pictures are dissapointing too because they use the same people's dogs over and over again inside the same house. But if you do not have the APBT book by O'Neil and don't know if you want the Essential Pit Bull or the O'Neil APBT book just pick whichever one you like best(I like the one by O'Niel better myself, it's cuter) And if after your decision you decide to get a second Pit Bull book I reccomend Pit Bulls for Dummies(I don't know if this site sells it but Pets Mart does)it's my 5th Pit Bull book I'm reading and it's great (and funny). And if you just must get another Pit Bull book 'American Pit Bull Terriers/American Staffordshire Terriers' by Joe Stahlkuppe is a nice and even has beautiful drawings.
Great book for the first time owner.......1999-12-02
If you have just purchased your first pit bull or are just thinking about purchasing a pit bull, this is the book for you. I have owned two pit bulls for 6 months now and I purchased them without having any knowledge of the breed. They are great dogs and are eager listeners, but there are alot of things that I learned from the book that are very helpful. This book will definitely make better dogs and me a better owner. The title fits the book, "Essential" for all owners.

Invaluable Reference.......2000-09-10
To know what antique pottery looks like when you see it you need to have studied an excellent guide that has pictures as clear and fine in detail as you can get. You need the items cataloged, to be presented in chronological order and grouped according to type. The information contained must be accurate and concise. This is as close as you will come aside from working for a museum, fine antique dealer or auction house. This is why this reference was created and why it is considered the best of its kind.

Breathtaking nature walk.......2004-12-02
The Country Diary is a book arranged month by month of the writer/artist's nature walks and discoveries. Each month begins with a history of the month, related folk lore, and poetry. There is also wonderful art work that allows you to journey with Ms. Holden on her adventures. Her monthly entries details the world around her and draws you back to the pages of her journal over and over again. I first checked out this book from the library to get my children to begin their own nature journals as part of our homeschooling science class, but I found myself more captivated than even they could ever be. I have checked out her book so many times, that I finally bought my own copy. She has motivated me to sketch in my own journal and to look with new eyes at the natural world around me. In times where one is forced to stay in, you can still journey outside with Ms. Holden's book. Awesome!
a special find.......2003-03-13
found this book at an estate sale for 25 cents....truly a beautiful find.
This book is a special treasure.......2000-12-07
After a doctor's appointment in Houston I dropped by a small privately owned bookstore I thought looked interesting. As the owner and I spoke she said she could tell I would love this book because of my love of gardening, birds and nature--but that obtaining it would be very difficult. I asked them to put me on a search list and a few months later it arrived. The author's drawings and observations as she watches nature are captivating. Edith started this journal in 1906 and it was never shown to anyone until it was discovered on a shelf in an old country home and then published. There is a sweetness and innocence in the writing that's hard to describe. The pages are like a rather like a thick piece of manilla paper and if I had an extra copy of this book I would frame page after page. I purchased it sight unseen and consider it one of my great treasures.
a beautiful book of nature watercolours.......2000-12-03
This book was a bestseller when it was originally published in the 1970's, and there was a good reason for it. Edith Holden, the artist of this work was a very accomplished watercolorist. This book is filled with her views of the fruits, beauty and wonder of nature. It shows the flowers, birds and insects of the natural world as they appear over a year accompanied by appropriate poems and quotations.
The watercolours are simply breathtaking. The closest thing to this book that I have seen is illuminated manuscripts, but the effect here is quite different.
The publishers have been very wise with publication. You get a page-by-page facimilie in full colour, reproducing the original manuscript. They have not cluttered the book up by reproducing pages and putting their own text next to it.
If you run across a copy of this pick it up and let it take you away to another world.
The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady.......2000-02-09
Magnificent! Beutiful! A piece of art
Book Description
A naturalist's delight, and a record-breaking gift book, back in print! In 1906, Edith Holden recorded in words and images the flora and fauna of the British countryside through the changing seasons. For 70 years, her enchanting journal lay undiscovered--until 1977, when it was first published with great success (as any bookseller will recall). Now, it is back in print, ours to treasure once again. All the charm and beauty of the original remains intact in this facsimile, with Holden's carefully handwritten entries: favorite poems, personal thoughts, observations of the wildlife she saw in her native Warwickshire; and remarks on her travels throughout England and Scotland. On every page, her exquisitely rendered paintings--executed with a naturalist's eye for detail and an artist's sensitivity and skill--capture birds perched on branches, their mouths open in song; a tiny shrew mouse, sniffing the air; delicate butterflies and slithering snakes; fluttering leaves; and an array of flowers, from pink foxgloves and trailing roses to yellow water lilies. And, each spellbinding picture reflects her deep love of nature. Surely a beloved classic for a new generation of book buyers.

A little corner to sit, observe and rest...........2006-04-22
I have the 1977 version and I think it is far better than the recent one. It's lovely to follow the months day by day, learning facts about trees, flowers, insecs. The artwork she drew is enchanting.....
A precious not much heard of book....
Lovely elegant book.......2006-01-14
I borrowed this book from the library and fell in love with the delicate watercolors of plant and animal life, the occasional quotes from poetry, and the rare observations about the weather, etc. Then the book went out of print but it has returned and remains a treasure on my bookshelf, a book I will not lend out to anyone lest it not come home again. A resonant reminder that there is so much going on if only the train would break down and leave us free to walk a while.
Edith's Life & Work.......2004-06-16
I became drawn to the work and life of Edith Holden after I saw the TV series that was made of her life. I became very intrigued and even bought and read the Ina Taylor biography. Her bizarre and mysterious death intrigued me almost as much as her life. Although there was no sign of struggle, and the inquest ruled her death an accident, I'm not entirely convinced that Edith died accidentally. I'm somewhat convinced that she may have committed suicide. Even if she couldn't swim, it's hard to believe that a woman can drown in 4 feet of water that close to shore unless she did it intentionally.
This is an enchanting book full of nature illustrations by Edith Holden, with excerpts of poetry by great poets, and nature diary entries and observations by Edith, about about birds, insects, flowers, rural places she visited, that sort of thing. Very appealing for those with a nastalgia for country surroundings and the country life.

she's back, better than ever.......2002-12-14
When i found out that the Country diary of an Edwardian Lady was to come back in print after more than five years in the wilderness, i remembered feeling elated, why, because Ms Holden and her talents was the best thing ever to have happened to the book world, and this new edition showing what the diary looked like at the time it was written is the best ever, she put rural warwickshire on the map in a way no other author could have or will do, the book is not only a teaching of nature (remembering that Edith was a teacher) but also a portable art gallery of in my opinion some of the best surviving examples of her artwork, i have long been a holden devotee (the word fan is reserved for rowdy pop stars)i have and always will treasure this beautiful book and its sister publication the nature notes of an edwardian lady, we love this book perhaps for its nostalgic charm for all things turn of the century, but more importantly because most of ediths beloved nature trails around her home in Olton Hollow, solihull now no longer exist, so my advice, buy this book and give it pride of place in the cabinet
A lovely book.......2002-04-11
I bought this book years ago and foolishly gave it away. I recently repurchased it and am glad to have it back. I give it four stars instead of five because I figure five stars should be reserved for John James Audubon.
For the most part I like the older edition (ISBN 0-03-021026-7) better. It is printed on yellowish paper with darkened edges, purposely made to look a bit aged. The colors are darker and the detail on the illustrations shows up better. But this 2001 edition has its good points too. It's printed on pure white paper so even though some of the pictures look a little washed out, the colors look clearer and brighter, not so muddy. So some people might prefer this new edition.
There's a biography of Edith Holden, out of print, that I'd be interested to read. (Edwardian Lady: The Story of Edith Holden, by Ina Taylor.)

Book Description
It was indeed an adventure for those pioneers in France who struggled for the recognition of the new-born dance of the twentieth century - from the free dance of Isadora Duncan, through the absolute dance of Mary Wigman, to the modern dance of Martha Graham.
Jacqueline Robinson has lived at the heart of this adventure, sharing the aspirations of a whole generation who often suffered from the lack of understanding of an establishment more inclined towards classical ballet.
From the breaking of the soil in the twenties, to the flowering in the sixties, here is a chronicle of the changing landscape of French dance. Here is the story of those men and women, ploughmen and poets, rebels and visionaries - the recollection of those events that made it possible for dance as an art form in Western countries to rise again as a fundamental expression of the human spirit.

Book Description
A true story with more drama and excitement than fiction. In 1836, the barque Stirling Castle shipwrecked on Australia's Great Barrier Reef, leaving the crew, Captain Fraser, and his wife at the mercy of cannibalistic aborigines. The captain was soon murdered; Mrs. Fraser remained alive, forced to endure humiliation as a slave of the tribe--and more tragically, to witness her new baby drowned. A remarkable rescue finally saved her--and her subsequent misadventures in England provide an intriguing finale to this sensational tale.
Customer Reviews:
well researched and compelling.......2003-08-04
I wish I had read this *before* I visited Fraser Island!
The material is covered in a thorough, even-handed way, and at the same time a great read. I especially appreciated the description of events after Fraser/Greene returned to Britain.
