The Bible of the Agaves is back in print!.......1998-01-27
Back by Popular Demand The University of Arizona Press called this week, to let me know that they have reprinted Dr. Howard Scott Gentry's Bible of the Agaves..."Agaves of Continental North America." This book, originally printed in 1982, is an indispensable guide to the Agaves, a group of plants that have been used by the people of Mesoamerica for well over 9,000 years. With a copy of this book in your fat little hands, you can learn how to brew up a few cups of killer Mescal and weave a mat to rest on while you contemplate the authority of your brew... Dr. Gentry gave twenty-five years of his life to the Agaves, conducting field research from central Nevada south to the islands off the coast of Panama. Widely recognized as the world's leading authority on the Agaves, Dr. Gentry was an agricultural explorer for the U.S. Department of Agriculture for more than 30 years. I first met Dr. Gentry while on a field trip in Mexico in the late `50's. I was asked to be his mailman. I delivered mail from the U.S. to him and took mail back to post from El Paso. I learned more about the Agave family in one night around the campfire than I could have learned in two semesters at a University. I was invited to a reception honoring Dr. Gentry back in 1982 at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix. The occasion was a giant celebration of the publication of the book Agaves of Continental North America. Part of the funding for the book was from a grant from the National Academy of Science. A day after the reception, Dr. Gentry took me over to his office to share some field data and photos with me. When I asked Dr. Gentry about the fine points of funding research and writing, he smiled and said: "You know, I would rather re-write the entire book and do all of the field work all over again than I would fill out all the paper work necessary to obtain funding from the National Academy." Dr. Gentry's book is one of those rare books that speak to the scholar and to the layman. Every serious student of desert plants needs a copy of this book. I know that Dr. Gentry is in Agave heaven, visiting with Mayahuel, the Goddess of Agaves and together, they are profusely thanking the University of Arizona Press, for this important reprint!
One of the classic books on agaves: a resource........1997-04-08
Exhaustive, well-written, highly-detailed, indispensible for a correct classification of agaves. Nothing currently in print is as authoratative and complete
Book Description
The Rough Guide to Tokyo is the ultimate insider''s guide to Japan''s dynamic capital. The guide has comprehensive coverage of all the sights, from the city''s timeless shrines and temples to the hip 21st-century development of Roppongi Hills, plus up-to-date reviews of the best places to eat, sleep, drink and shop and detailed accounts of day-trips to Mount Fuji, the tranquil temples of Kamakura, and other nearby attractions. A full-colour section introduces Tokyo''s highlights, and there are maps for the whole of the city and day-trips, plus the Tokyo subway map.
Customer Reviews:
Good overview -- some details wrong.......2007-01-13
The Rough Guide to Tokyo provided a good overview of the city and some of the best tourist destinations. The overview of the regions in the city was particularly helpful, as were the transportation guides (although similar information was available at subway stations.)
Several times during our one week visit, my wife and I attempted to find a restaurant or bar that was recommended or described in the Rough Guide, only to discover that it had closed some time ago. This was particularly frustrating as the 3rd edition was less than a year old at the time of publication.
Overall, a convenient way to get your feet wet, but ask the locals where to eat for dinner, they gave better advice and the restaurants still existed!
Decent Restaurant Listings and Maps.......2006-04-24
This book scores high marks for excellent maps and very extensive listings of restaurants. You could certainly take it as your only guide book if you were going to Tokyo.
However, I was still quite disappointed by the descriptive text in the book. Too often, the neighborhood descriptions were very superficial and bland. Fortunately I didn't rely very much on these sections of the book. However, since so much of the book is comprised of these lengthly text passages, it felt as if the book was about twice as heavy as it needed to be.
Cut down version of the Japan rough guide.......2003-09-10
I bought this thinking that it is a more in-depth guide of Tokyo. But it is simply a cut down version of the Tokyo section of Rough guide to Japan. I immediately returned it because I'd already bought the latter. For the price, I would at least expect something more original.
The only advantage over the guide to Japan is that it is pocket-sized.
Only guide you'll need to Tokyo.......2002-12-11
I made four trips to Tokyo for work in 2000, and this is the only guide book that made it into my suitcase on trips 2, 3, and 4. Filled with concise reviews of all the major sights as well as restaurants and stores, this little book (I bought the pocket, mini edition) is as frank as some of the back-packer guides, but is not prejudiced against the reader who has a bit of disposable income. Some finds from this book not mentioned in most other guides to Tokyo that really made me feel like an insider: taking the Sumida gawa ferry, the underworld of Gay Tokyo in Shinjuku Ni-Chome, and heavenly CHEAP bath salts from Japanese no-name brand Muji.
Truly, if you want to feel like you are an insider, and you don't want to have to read four or five of the same old, same old guides, this is the book for you!

Book Description
This compelling autobiography recounts his parents' immigration to the United States, the family's battles with tuberculosis, and political activism.
Customer Reviews:
what a fascinating life.......2006-02-16
This is the story of a boy growing up with little, but always yearning for more and eventually achieving his goals. In a sense a modern ethnic Horatio Alger story, but with cultural respect as the goal rather than financial success. The book was definitely a page-turner, Dionicio had quite a childhood and I always wanted to know the next anecdote that would come out. At the same time, I was shocked at how my country has treated those we consider less desirable.
Being biracial I look like a typical white American, and hence have no experiences of such discrimination. However, I have often wondered about what discrimination my father may have gone through, or especially what my father's parents went through when they were new Mexican immigrants to California. This is sure to be a topic of conversation next time I meet the grandparents.
"struggle for acceptability".......2001-06-11
I think is a great book that tells the struggles of Mexican American family emigrating to the United States. It is a great source of information for people like me, who would like to learn more about another culture. The struggle and the rewards, the suffering and the satisfaction that the author goes through is compelling.
Great Story.......2001-01-12
Reading this book made me feel like I was sitting around the campfire, listening to my grandfather tell about the old days. It tells about the struggles of a family leaving Mexico during the revolution in search of a better life in the United States. I especially found it interesting since I live in the Los Angeles area because you learn a lot of history about the area. It is very fast, easy reading and hard to put down. It's a great story to read at any age.

A Great way to Price Your Old Comics.......2001-03-06
Written and assembled by the team of writers and editors who used to publish the magazine Comic Values Monthy (as well as Triton, and Toy Values Monthly). This guide offers sections on each of the major comicbook companies, as well as Golden Age Comics, smaller Color and B&W publishers. Very well put together, they have been issuing this guide since 1994.
Comics Values 2000 is a great help.......2000-05-05
I am new at selling comic books a task you can say was "left to me". I have a large inventory of underground comics and it was a great pleasure to find a section on the subject in this book. I refer to it every day.

the "bible" for fatplant enthusiasts.......2007-04-17
The greatest book - to this day - that was ever written about these great and unusual plants.
This author is a master.......2005-12-28
I am a long time collector on the east coast of those magical caudiciforms. I have purchased them on the west coast. This author is the definitive master when it comes to the knowledge of these specific plants. I am proud to finally own a copy. This group is scultptural and not for the impatient. I have had many of my caudiciforms or pachys over 15 years.
This book is a treasure and a must have for the serious collector and anyone who admires this specialty.
Fascinating book. A must for succulent collectors........2000-10-28
This group of plants is fascinating and well worth learning about. I have used this book so much that I need to purchase another copy of it. My copy is getting to be worn out. I highly recommend this book to any succulent collector. Gordon Rowley has outdone himself with this one.
A unique treasure........one of a kind!!!!!!.......1999-05-05
I came accross this book completely by chance a few years ago, through an exotic plant dealer and was instantly smitten by the treasures hidden within. It is the ONLY book I have found dedicated to the unique group of plants that are the Caudaciformes and Pachycaul Succulents. It's informative and entertaining with exceptional fotographs. Every time I open it I find something new. EXCELLENT!!!!!!!!!!
A work of art.......1997-10-04
The caudiciforms - a most fascinating and photogenic group of plants are sometimes beautiful, sometimes comical-looking, but always interesting. This guide, a superbly crafted masterpiece written by expert Gordon Rowley, could serve as either a coffee table treasure trove of expertly crafted photos or a valuable reference, with text and pictures providing a wealth of information to even the most serious student of botany. This book, written by a true expert, should certainly be held as a prized possession of both the casual nature aficionado and the specialist alike.

Book Description
This volume focusses on the interplay between war and society in the Eastern Mediterranean, in a period which witnessed the Arab conquests, the Seljuk invasion, the Crusades, and the Mongol incursions. The military aspects of these momentous events have not been fully discussed so far. For the first time this book offers a synthesis of trends in military technology and its effect on society in the period from the Arab conquests to the establishment of an Ottoman hegemony. War and Society in the Eastern Mediterranean provides for medievalists an Oriental context to the military aspects of the Crusades, and for scholars of both Middle Eastern and military history a coherent treatment of an important topic over a long period and covering many different cultures.

Book Description
One September night in 1892 the Wild West went east. A masked man boarded the American Express Special train as it sped through New York State and single-handedly stole a fortune. His name was Oliver Curtis Perry, and he instantly became the country's most wanted man.
While detectives searched in vain, the public and press couldn't get enough of the handsome, charismatic young robber whose physical daring was matched by stories of a troubled childhood and romantic life. Women adored him, boys worshipped him: America was falling in love. Five months later he defied belief by robbing the same train again. This time, after one of the most extraordinary chases in history, he was caught and sentenced to forty-nine years hard labor.
But if the authorities believed they had beaten this celebrity criminal they were badly mistaken. Perry's prison life proved as remarkable as his robberies as he turned escape artist, protestor, hunger-striker, and finally poet in his determination to win his freedom. In Wanted Man, Tamsin Spargo brings this extraordinary portrait of a forgotten man to life in a story of adventure and tragedy.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing!.......2007-03-22
The book is nicely presented with a large number of illustrations and is very readable. However I decided to give the book only one star because it lacks any academic value. The structure of the book has several serious flaws and omissions namely there is no list of illustrations, no list of references (even those within the text are scant), bibliography or index! Considering that the book is written by an academic and Director of School at a University I was shocked that this was considered acceptable for a historical biography! The life story of Oliver Curtis Perry is certainly one worth telling and the author is very enthusiastic but without stating references etc, that is all she is doing and the book descends rapidly into what may as well be a fictionalized biography, who could tell? I found the lack of structure highly irritating, possibly because the book had the potential be really good with a very broad appeal.
WANTED MAN left me wanting more! Beautifully written..........2005-02-12
In her beautifully written book, WANTED MAN, Tamsin Spargo has closed the century-old gap between forgotten outlaw Oliver Curtis Perry of Victorian-era New York and today. Through her sensitive yet objective and historically accurate telling of the life of this train robber, the author has raised a unique figure from the dead. Oliver Curtis Perry was a host of contradictions and grappled with his own powerful demons. Perry was mysterious, handsome, manipulative, highly intelligent, articulate but uneducated, romantic -- a 19th Century Robinhood or simple crook? Thoroughly researched and passionately executed, this truly intimate portrait of a life gone horribly wrong but a spirit still unbroken left me wanting more. A movie perhaps? The story would translate well to film.

This Book Has It All.......2007-09-10
This is the only book that really takes you from start to finish with Candida. It not only explained the things to do but why. The author has been through this and the fact that Dr. Zoltan Rona is part of it makes it the "real thing". It is helping me on my way back to wellness.
a good book.......2007-08-16
This book is pretty decent. Some things I don't care for too much: Way too many exclamation marks. ("Nuts are a bomb in the digestive tract!") Ok, this may be way exciting to the author but it makes it seem like she is on crack or something. Sorry just an observation. Also the book is incredibly repetitive. In fact, with a close reading you will find entire paragraphs verbatim in different parts of the book. A little anoying. My hat is off to anyone who writes an honest book on this subject. I in no way intent to discredit the author's sincerity. They did a good job.
Great source!.......2007-08-06
I am glad i read this book. I was looking for something that would explain causes of candida and help me prevent it, as opposed to just popping diflucan or other medications, to which I have side reactions. With this book, I feel I can keep candida under control by maintaining a diet- not the worst price to pay for staying healthy. I have been watching what i eat for the past couple of months and it works! (I only miss drinking milk.) I am also glad to have been reassured that I wasn't imagining my strong sugar cravings. This book has been a great resource!
Best of 3.......2007-01-16
We purchased 3 books related to Candida from Amazon. This one stands way above the other two. It doesn't just preach, it explains why to do or not to do something. My wife and I have been on a Candida cleanse for 2 weeks (she has it, I'm doing it to support her). The food is pretty good. It does take more time to prepare the meals but the results will be worth it (lost 12 pounds in 1 week!). Miss some things (like coffee and wine) but will stick it out for 4 weeks. Wish us luck.
Over the Top.......2006-08-12
This book is in the catagory of information overload and treats Candida overgrowth in the same way as several other severe immunodeficient diseases are. In fact others conditions are included. The co-author being an M.D. helps present a rounded viewpoint.
