I purchased this guide and took it with me on a cruise to SE Alaska. The guide has too few species listed and too little information on each species to be of any practical use. I would not recommend it.

An urban American-style manga well-paced and sincere.......2007-09-14

While it may be over-the-top and full of ultra-violence and adult themes, MBQ has filled the niche of an American-style manga of the highest quality. Felipe Smith's style seems to be influenced by Tatsuya Egawa of Golden Boy, but his perspective is all his own.

The story is one of violence, sex, and revenge. But smack dab in the middle is a bright-eyed, naive, over-confident comic artist named Omario and we get to see his big pitch! It's a wild ride into a cynical comic artist's mind that you shouldn't miss!

Very Refreshing.......2006-04-18

"MBQ" is a great graphic novel by an unknown, but promising artist named Felipe Smith. Smith uses many styles in his artwork, as demonstrated on the front and back covers. This manga is a real treat for the eyes! Some pages are downright haunting. But some of the scenes are definately for ages 17 and older only. Those pages contain extreme violence and sexuality, which were even a little disturbing for me. But for mature readers, you'll find the entire book very enjoyable.

"MBQ" stands for McBurger Queen, which is a major fast food chain in the book. The story doesn't mainly revolve around MBQ; it really centers around a few characters that go about their dull and dreary lives in modern day Los Angelas. Some of them are very likeable heros, and some will make you lose faith in humanity, but each has a sense of reality that gives you a fresh view on today's society and pop-culture. They bring out emotion and hope. Fear and hate. They made me question today's morals and beliefs, and existing in a tough and fast paced world. Even a full day after I've read this novel, I still have it stuck in my head. And I bet it will be stuck there for a long time, so be sure to check out this great manga!

Not for under 16 . . . but excellent nonetheless........2005-10-10

MBQ was a true delight to read. An original storyline with edgy, expressive, and gritty artwork, Felipe Smith carries the reader through the lives of individuals in the LA area. What truly surprised me was to get a perspective from "both sides of the track." You see the weak sides of the bad guys and tough side of the good guys. Felipe managed to create a realistic setting with incredibly believable characters.

While the cover is a bit misleading--the cutesy artwork can lead one to believe this is for a younger crowd--and I found myself a little queasy at some of the explicitness in the first chapter, MBQ is still an engrossing manga to be reckoned with. I look forward to future volumes and hope to see more of the main character and his interaction in the lives of those around him. This is a must-read for more mature readers looking for something refeshing and new.

This is without a shadow of a doubt the freshest, hippest and most intelligent piece of writing and drawing I've seen in forever! Buy it before this dude becomes far too famous and his work is unobtainable. I've got a feeling about this.... the structure of stories, the factions on his characters.... all is totally believable and transports you... I dunno simply elsewhere.

I Unfortunately Don't Think This Book Deserves Even "No" Stars.......2006-12-23

First, this book is expensive. It is paperback and very brief. The Amazon blurb gives the impression it is scholarly; and that's the worst thing about it, because it is trite beyond belief.

It's merely a collection of truisms about pet loss that the most unlearned child would be able to express, and the unimpassioned quality of the writing makes it very difficult to believe the author (or authors; I'm still not clear how many people were involved in the work) were pioneers in their area in the field of pet grief counseling.

I returned the book and asked for my money back, and I haven't done that with another book from Amazon.

Pet Loss and Human Emotion - guiding clients through grief by Cheri Barton Ross, MA & Jane Baron-Sorensen, RN, MA, MFCC The seriousness of issues that can arise from the loss of a pet and the severity of feelings experienced are explicated with great expertise and sensitivity by Ross and Baron-Sorenson. This book is designed to assist anyone in the helping professions to understand what a pet owner may be experiencing when their companion animal dies. Teachers, clergy, mental health professionals, veterinarians and staff, and anyone who has ever experienced the loss of a pet will benefit from the authors advice and years of experience in this beautifully written book. The authors begin with a description of the well documented benefits of animal owing for children, the elderly, people with AIDS, the terminally ill and the handicapped as well as for the general public. They suggest an assessment of the role an animal plays in the life of the client and careful consideration of how that affects their daily functioning, self esteem, sense of well being and identity. The phenomenon of "Animal Collectors" (individuals who keep animals in greater numbers than they can humanely care for) is described and the authors explain how to avoid the pitfalls in therapeutic intervention with them. When an animal dies the authors find that pet owners go through the same phases as grief as for human loss and suggest strategies for supportive therapy. Specifics about the procedure of euthanasia are given along with guidelines for assisting clients in working through all the issues that present before, during and after euthanasia is performed. Client issues stemming from euthanasia will range from memories of other deaths to situations where the client and pet share the same illness. Case studies are given from the authors' experiences of special types of pet loss such as accidents, a pet being stolen or being killed by someone, divorce situations and missing pets. Helpful suggestions are given by Ross and Baron-Sorenson of how helping professionals may best navigate potentially explosive situations and handle the complex emotions of pet owners due to these special circumstances of pet loss. A range of feelings from guilt to rage can occur when a pet owner feels they were responsible in some way for the death, or that someone else was culpable. The authors give valuable insight into how to respond to these difficult situations before bereaved pet owners' job performance, marriage and daily functioning are adversely affected. Information on how children of varying ages assimilate loss and how to communicate the facts of death or euthanasia will be of invaluable help to anyone working with children and to parents. Concerns of the elderly are addressed including the profound impact of lifestyle changes a pet's death presents for this vulnerable population. Guidelines for acquiring a new pet are detailed with a special eye to timing and each individual's unique situation. The authors find that resolution of the issues presenting from the loss of a pet is advisable before bringing a new pet into the home. Eh not really indepth.......2003-06-12

There are very little, if any, few diagrams and the explanations are given to you as though you already have a background with electricity and mechanical items. The sections you perceive to be full of information are probably only 3 pages in length. The diagrams are there to show you what the instruments looks like, but no indications on the diagram of how it would work. Not a book I would recommend to people who want to be in-depth about their systems and planes.

Wonderful book on a fascinating group of plants........2000-10-28

I love Madagascar, especially the succulent plants found there. I was impressed with how many of the plants I have grown were native to that island. Many of my favorite plants are from here and I am always looking for more information on them. The photographs are wonderful. Both volume one and volume two of this book are well worth having. They contain valuable information that I have found nowhere else.

Tony Kushner's complex and demanding play Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes has been the most talked about, analyzed, and celebrated play of the decade. The critic Harold Bloom has included Kushner's play in his "Western canon" alongside Shakespeare and the Bible, and drama scholar John M. Clum has termed it "a turning point in the history of gay drama, the history of American drama, and of American literary culture." While we might be somewhat wary of the instant canonization that such critical assessments confer, clearly Kushner's play is an important work, honored by the Pulitzer Prize, thought worthy of recognition on "purely aesthetic" grounds at the same time that it has been embraced--and occasionally rejected--for its politics.

Kushner's play explicitly positions itself in the current American conflict over identity politics, yet also situates that debate in a broader historical context: the American history of McCarthyism, of immigration and the "melting pot," of westward expansion, and of racist exploitation. Furthermore, the play enters into the politically volatile struggles of the AIDS crisis, struggles themselves interconnected with the politics of sexuality, gender, race, and class.

The original essays in Approaching the Millennium explore the complexities of the play and situate it in its particular, conflicted historical moment. The contributors help us understand and appreciate the play as a literary work, as theatrical text, as popular cultural phenomenon, and as political reflection and intervention. Specific topics include how the play thematizes gender and sexuality, race and ethnicity; the postmodern incarnation of the Brechtian epic; AIDS and the landscape of American politics. The range of different international productions of Angels in America provides a rich basis for discussion of its production history, including the linguistic and cultural shifts required in its "translation" from one stage to the next.

The last section of Approaching the Millennium includes interviews with Tony Kushner and other key creators and players involved in the original productions of Angels. The interviews explore issues raised earlier in the volume and dialogues between the creative artists who have shaped the play and the critics and "theatricians" engaged in responding to it.

Brilliant!.......2005-05-07

I wasn't very keen on reading some scholar-talk when it comes to one of my favorite dramas ever. Not perhaps because of spoiling the magic, but because it's hard to write intelligent and witty not too much of the intellectual postmodern jargon, when it comes to questions on identity, race, gender etc.
I was simply amazed by this book.
The last part of essays (dealing with its performances) is perhaps the weakest of them all. It's like a bunch of a reviews.

However, the "Identity" part... kicks ass!

Obligatory for fans of Kushner but also for those, who're interested in the whole complexity of drama as a genre. One of the most intelligent and coherent books analysing the problem of structure, questions on a hero of the play (and her/his identity - this one is really brilliant!), as well as problems with using and dealing with the cultural patterns, which are involved in a theater play.

Illuminating in part, but also abstract and repetitive.......2004-10-17

This book offers a loosely organised collection of 18 essays on Kushner's play "Angels in America". If you are looking for a coherent exploration of the underlying themes and metaphors of this epic drama, you will not find it here. The contributions each stand very much on their own and highlight the work from a random, even somewhat bewildering diversity of angles. Most of them are highly abstract and philosophical. You will come across sentences like "The ambivalences that are so deeply described in Angels in America, its conflicted relationship to various utopianisms, to the concept of America, to Marxism, Mormonism, and liberalism, function, I believe, to accommodate the play to what I see as a fundamentally conservative and paradigmatically American politic - dissensus, the `hermeneutics of laissez-faire'," or, "Epic theatre needs to construct the experience of ideological contradiction as the mode of subjectivity it projects for spectators rather than the ideological totalization implied in supporter, judgment, empathy or even detachment."
There is a lot of repetition. The exposition about Walter Benjamin's essay `Theses on the Philosophy of History', seminal in the genesis of the play, is illuminating when it occurs in the first essay, but becomes wearisome on its third or fourth repetition several essays further on. Nearly all the authors focus on the obvious key scenes in the play (e.g., the opening of Millennium, the closing of Perestroika), which are also cited repetitively, and though their different viewpoints lend extra depth to these scenes, many others remain undiscussed. I was furthermore disappointed by the strong accent on AinA as a gay lib and/or AIDS play, and the comparative neglect of its universal meaning and appeal (as demonstrated by the extraordinary success of the recent HBO televised version). Some contributions struck me as pointless or out of place: the interview with Robert Altman was already superseded by later development at the time the book went to press, and though the editors think it offers worthwhile visions of Kushner, Altman's most common answer to questions appears to be `I don't know'. De Jongh's essay about AinA in London is more about British censorship history than Kushner's play.
All in all a very mixed bag, that I'm not sure I wholeheartedly recommend.

Very insightful work on very insightful work........2001-05-06

In my opinion, "Angels in America" is the greatest American play of all time. The blend of realism, fantasy, scenes of almost cinematic magnitude, and monologues full of stunning poetry, make this the most incredible theatrical experience ever. So it was with mixed feelings that I picked up this book. I was a little weary about spoiling the experience of the show with too much analysis. Fortunately, though, I was pleasantly surprised.

This book is not just scholarly babble. These college-friendly essays actually provide some very useful analogies to the work. It helped me to better understand, and therefore appreciate, Tony Kushner's amazing epic.

If you are a fan of "Angels in America", and want to gain more insight, then this is a definite buy for you.
