Not up to LP standards.......2005-08-28

This book had a number of problems, including wrong address information for several sites, mislabeled maps, etc. The suggestions made were as per usual with LP guides, excellent, but when the map and direction goofs adding so much time in looking for things in the book or on the wrong streets, the advantages of having a pocket guideare quickly lost.

My husband and I love this cookbook. It's our go-to book for really delicious fare. We make some of the recipes for weekday meals, though most we cook on the weekend (they require a little more effort than typical throw-it-together meals).

I highly recommend this book for entertaining, especially small dinner parties. The quality of the dishes approaches that of a fine restaurant, so your guests will be wowed and all palates will be happy. The recipes are also perfect for creating conversation at the dinner table, since the book is filled with L&C lore. Your guests will no doubt rave about the recipes, and the book is so pretty you can pull it out and show it off! The pages are filled with period engravings and pictures of the flora and fauna that are featured in the food. At the bottom of each recipe page is a quote from the L&C journals, in a font adapted from Thomas Jefferson's own handwriting.

Our favorite recipe by far is the Buffalo and Forest Mushroom Shepherd's Pie. The seasonings are perfect, and I'm salivating thinking about it right now. We've also tried the mouthwatering Cherry-filled Butter Cookies, delicious Cream of Tomato Soup, Venison Shanks Braised with Fennel and Onions, Rice Pilaf, Smoked Salmon and Corn Chowder, Cornmeal-Crusted Catfish, Goose and Mushroom Soup with Dumplings, and Pork/Apples/Prune Stew. I also have Chocolate Pots de Creme chilling in the refrigerator right now!

The author of this book really knows what she's doing. I think the only drawback to the cookbook (though this is minor) is that it doesn't stay open while you're cooking. Other than that, you won't be disappointed.

Best Cookbook Ever!!!.......2004-06-05

This is the most awesome of cookbooks! I love the recipes and really recommend the Maple Glazed Salmon, Buffalo Meatloaf, Spoonbread, and Pumpkin Pecan Loaf! I love cooking and always look for unusual cookbooks and this one is my favorite of more than 200 hundred that I own. I've given this cookbook as gifts to over 30 family and friends. Thanks to Leslie Mansfield for an outstanding cookbook!!!!!

Lewis and Clark Lovers be aware.......2003-04-05

This is THE L&C cookbook. Took a course on L&C where at end of term, we had to do a project. One group cooked various foods using this book. HUGE hit with class. Granted some recipes are from Jeffersonian VA to make a book (hey he sponsored it as well as being in the right era) but all are authentic and ones tested so far were quite tasty.

I also am a big Lewis and Clark buff; in addition, an avid cook, with my own cookbook. This book finally came out several months after it was supposed to, but it was worth the wait!

Most cookbooks, even the ones that sound like they should have exotic recipes, have the same old stuff, based on boring ingredients that produce ho-hum meals. Not this book! The author clearly knows about good food, and the recipes are a breath of fresh air. They're not terribly hard to make, either.

Visiting my folks over Christmas, the whole family decided to have a Lewis+Clark dinner, just for fun. Everyone helped, and we had: Parsnip Fritters, Sweet and Sour Red Cabbage, Shrimp Bisque, and since we couldn't decide between the Rack of Venison with Rosemary-Dijon Crust and Roast Duck with Blackberry Sauce, we had both of them! For dessert, it was Mocha Creme Pie. All were outstanding.

This book is a class act; I just wish there were a hardcover version.

The Food Journal of Lewis and Clark is a remarkable book, part history text and part cook book. The author outlines the trail and some of the main events that the members of the expedition experienced. This information is illustrated with maps and fully annotated with references. Within this information, the author includes food lists and notations that show the types of food that the crew actually ate while making their trek. This information is then used to deduce the types of meals and even the actual recipes that might have been used.

I think that this publication is a fabulous idea that allows people to actually experience a little piece of history. It is one thing to read about new and interesting aspects of history but it is quite another to actually create a dish or a meal in order to actually experience what life might have been like for these individuals. It is no wonder that this book has won all sorts of awards: Winner of the Midwest Independent Publishers Association Book Achievement Awards, 2004 Independent Publisher's Outstanding Book of the Year, and the Benjamin Franklin Award.

A Gem.......2006-09-08

This book's a gem, both history-wise and food-wise (I have another Lewis & Clark cookbook, it pales in comparison on both counts). The history is woven throughout the book in easy-to-swallow bits and bites. The recipes are very do-able, easy even, in home kitchens. I expected some 'weird' ingredients but there are none. Definitely a recommendation for cooks along the Expedition route but interesting for lots of folks, I think.

This book is one of the finest I have seen in a long time. It is a beautiful book - finely organized and elegantly presented. The unique feature of this book is that it not only presents recipes that the Voyage of Discovery used, it also places them in historical context. This is a truly fascinating book and an outstanding value.

We have introduced this book to our Cub Scout Pack and our Boy Scout Troop. It has turned out to be a hit with the boys. They really enjoy trying the different recipes and are excited about reading the history that accompanies their choices. In other words, they are learning and do not realize it because of the fun and enjoyment they are experiencing. That alone should speak volumes about this book.

Much more than a cookbook, Gunderson's book is a history lesson, sharing the words and thoughts of Lewis and Clark and how they managed their journey without the cooking conveniences we depend on today. The recipes are intriguing and easy-to-read and the journal entries make the book come alive. What a wonderful way to learn about Lewis and Clark - through cooking!

As a teacher of U.S. history with a special emphasis on the Lewis and Clark Expedition, I would highly recommend Mary Gunderson's "The Food Journal of Lewis & Clark". One of the most interesting aspects of U.S. history is the type of food eaten by our ancestors. This wonderful book not only shows us what the Corps of Discovery ate, but also how they prepared and enjoyed their meals. Two hundred years later American students are making these meals and learning that this expedition wouldn't have made it without this great food.

The Evensons have combined an easy to use spiral-bound book format with great Lewis & Clark art and a good selection of relevant quotes from Lewis and Clark journals.

Very small and full of good information.......2004-10-15

This small format pocket size guide is divided into three parts - Gardening from the Ground Up, Plant Portraits, and the Practical Gardener. The first section includes a wealth of information on critical factors for a successful garden. Some of the items discussed include climate, rainfall, wind, sun, soil type, drainage, and garden design.

The Plant Portraits section is by far the largest section of the book and grouped by annuals and biennials, perennials, bulbs, roses, vegetables, herbs, groundcovers, and vines. For each plant the authors include descriptions (height, colors, etc.), tips for growing (when to plant, how to thin, transplanting, etc.), and other useful information. It also has a small section of photographs for several of the more common plants.

The Practical Gardener section primarily covers equipment, pests, and diseases. The pests and diseases portion is good in that it covers characteristics, symptoms, hosts, and controls. While not a very thorough treatment of the pests and diseases it does cover the most common ones. The last part of this section has an excellent listing of plants organized by environmental preferences and uses. For example, it lists appropriate plants for bright sunny areas and for thickly shaded areas as well as ones to use for a cutting garden, for attracting butterflies, etc.

If you are looking for a smaller book that is easy to take along to the garden center but thorough enough to have all the most common information you can't go wrong with the Burpee Gardening Cyclopedia.

Is this the only book about CATS! the musical?.......2007-08-28

I read a review that said the pictures were crisp. I ordered the book and found the pictures to be blurry and unprofessional. They look like they were taken from the front row during a performance with the wrong film speed and light setting on the camera. I was very disappointed with the pictures and overall quality of the book. This is not a high quality book of the musical, but I can't seem to find any other book about the broadway musical that contains pictures. Too bad.

This cat thinks This Book has been overrated.......2003-03-28

I loved the stage musical and didn't understand a word except for "Memories". And I love the video to death. But this book is no way a companion to the video, unless you're just looking for the words to the songs. In that case you've spent way too much (the lyrics can be had on the WEB)! The cast in this book is different than the Video and if you have young kids who love the video like mine do, they are going to ask (and say)"Why daddy does Gus look different, or that's not Gus". The only worth while text is from Andrew Llyod Webber and it happens to be the shortest article of the 4 included. I was disappointed to say the least and in hind sight find that 99% of the reviews are "irrationally" positive and not at all realistic.

I am a big fan of Cats(we're talkin' realy big!I know all the lyrics and dances)and I found this book a great addition to my Cats Collection,which includes greasepaint, Old Possum's Book, T-Shirt,hat, sweatshirt,ORIGINAL BROADWAY COSTUME WORN BY CYNTHIA ONRUBIA(VICTORIA), fan-made costume, A WIG WORN BY VEERLE CASTELYN(JEMIMA), 5 CDs, Video, 2 DVDs, ticket stubs, autographs, program, magnets, letters from actors, and a WIG WORN BY CYNTHIA ONRUBIA THE ORIGINAL BROADWAY VICTORIA. This book is wonderful and added to my huge collection. It might not be as valuble as the two wigs or the costume, but it is still a cool book!

Alfred's Basic Guitar Method is a book I purchased for a class, and I am so thankful my professor has introduced me to it. This book is a comprehensive and clear source for learning how to read music and how to play guitar properly. I have taught myself how to play a little bit of guitar and was wary of fighting the bad habits I picked up along the way; however, Alfred's helped me to ease into the proper method. I have been teaching guitar since 1980 and have taught from other guitar methods. I always return to this one. This method starts with basic music theory as it relates to the guitar. Then one string at a time introduces new songs and chords. Alfred's basic guitar method is a concise and easy to follow book. In addition with each new lesson there are photos and diagrams that show left hand placement. In the back of the book is a chord chart that is arranged to key signatures not in alphabetical order as is in many other methods. This is important for the beginning student to learn which chords sound correct with other chords in various major and minor keys. Overall I would highly recommend Alfred's basic guitar method books 1-6 for a solid foundation in guitar studies.

Great for Beginners.......2002-07-09

This book is great for someone who has never picked up a guitar before. It teaches you how to read music as well as play. It is set up in an easy to understand and follow format.

Well written, backstage look at musical theater.......2007-05-23

This book is an interesting little backstage look at Broadway musical theater by one of the faceless, hard working, (struggling to be) up and coming, supporting performers. Twice in the beginning of this book, written in 2001, he notes how impressed he was with the show 'Crazy for You', and in 2007, when I first saw him perform, it was as the lead in (you guessed it) 'Crazy for You'.

Denman is a versatile guy, onstage as singer, dancer, actor, and offstage as choreographer, playwright, tap dance teacher, and (based on this book) quite a good writer. From the credits shown on his web site and based on what I saw at North Shore Music Theater (near Boston) Denman has made good progress in the years since writing this book toward his stated goal of moving up to principal performer.

"Springtime for Disappointment".......2006-07-04

I have several friends who were in the original cast of "The Producers". When visiting them back in 2002, one of my friends told me about Jeffry's book he was writing. Being one of the biggest Mel Brooks fans on the planet, I was really quite anxious to read it. About 25 pages into it, I realized that it should have been titled "A Year With 'The Producers' featuring MYSELF". I thought the book would have been much more interesting if it had been less about an unknown actor/writer, and how many names he could drop ,and more about people we've actually heard of.
The thing I found most disappointing was that more than a couple of times, Denman starts to tell us something interesting that someone said but then uses phrases like "but I'll keep that to myself", or "but I won't print that here". Then WHY write a book like this if you're not going to tell us the good stuff. That's the stuff we want to hear!
My other let down was that the final entry of the book was on September 10, 2001. I think the book could have benifited if Dehnman had written about how the show was effected by the events of 9/11. Seemed like a no brainer to me. I wonder why he chose to stop there?
In short, don't waste your time with this one. Buy the coffee table book that actually does have funny stories about Mel and the other interesting characters that somehow Jeffry didn't notice were around for that year.

All about him, not the show.......2004-10-03

This book is a great example of why editors are so important. It seems this author didn't have one. The journal should have been the starting point of a book, not the end product. Instead of giving us the excruciating details interesting to no one but Mom and Dad(he started singing "Waiting for the Girls Upstairs" when his girlfriend was running late, whoopee), I expected some real insights into how Broadway-level theatre is created. OK, we get that it runs at a breakneck pace and that all the chorus kids think they could get the dance steps faster and better than the real stars. We get that this author hates it when stars get star treatment and the chorus is left out in the cold. (He did seem to enjoy the star dressing room when he got it for a couple of days, though, didn't he?) I can't believe we got so few stories about Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick, Mel Brooks... I mean, come on, Jeffrey, your long-winded description of your last performance of Cats is not what someone buying "a year with the Producers" wants to know about. Bottom line: this book is like your co-worker's vacation pictures from Niagara Falls. A complete bore.

a fun look at life backstage.......2003-06-16

this is a great book for anyone interested in any aspect of the theatre. It is an intimate look at the process, how actors live and work.

A Fantastic Read.......2003-05-25

If Jeffrey Denmans Broadway career goes into a tailspin (which I highly doubt) he could definetely get a job as an author. This book to say the least is impossible to put down. I read it in one sitting. Not only is it a brilliant look into the minds of Denman, Mel Brooks, Susan Stroman, and others, but it is a indispensable look at professional theatre and the toils and work that go into 3 hours of an amazing theatrical experience.
