Animal Cognition presents a clear, concise, and comprehensive overview of what we know about cognitive processes in animals. Focusing mainly on what has been learned from experimental research, Vauclair presents a wide-ranging review of studies of many kinds of animals--bees and wasps, cats and dogs, dolphins and sea otters, pigeons and titmice, baboons, chimpanzees, vervet monkeys, and Japanese macaques. He also offers a novel discussion of the ways Piaget's theory of cognitive development and Piagetian concepts may be used to develop models for the study of animal cognition.
Individual chapters review the current state of our knowledge about specific kinds of cognition in animals: tool use and spatial and temporal representations; social cognition--how animals manage their relational life and the cognitive organization that sustains social behaviors; representation, communication, and language; and imitation, self-recognition, and the theory of mind--what animals know about themselves. The book closes with Vauclair's "agenda for comparative cognition." Here he examines the relationship of the experimental approach to other fields and methods of inquiry, such as cognitive ethology and the ecological approach to species comparisons. It is here, too, that Vauclair addresses the key issue of continuity, or its absence, between animal and human cognition.
Given our still limited knowledge of cognitive systems in animals, Vauclair argues, researchers should be less concerned with the "why" question--the evolutionary or ecological explanations for differences in cognition between the species--and more concerned with the "what"--the careful work that is needed to increase our understanding of similarities and differences in cognitive processes. This thoughtful and lively book will be of great value to students of animal behavior and to anyone who desires a better understanding of humankind's relations to other living creatures.

an awesome companion for west coast biking!.......2007-07-14
i bought this book a few years ago in preparation for a seattle to san francisco bike trip i was planning. i did not make it all the way, only about 300 miles due to an old bicycling injury acting up (my trip ended in manzanita, oregon) but i was pretty shocked at how easy this book made all my travelling, especially if used with a bike computer. i'd never used a cycle computer with a book and was pretty skeptical about how accurate they would work together. happily i only got lost a couple times, which is amazing for a trip of this stature.
there are many accurate and helpful maps and endless notes on places to stay and eat and see whether you want to rough it or not. there are even some terrific sections on bike maintenance and healthy eating habits for avid bicyclists. i'm planning another trip this year to finish the journey i started last year and i'm definitely using this guide again simply because i know i can trust it for all my needs. don't even think about biking the west coast without it!
the only reason i gave it four stars is because they haven't updated it since it was first published in 2002 so i'm sure there are a few things out of date. lonely planet discontinued this series for some odd reason, which is a shame considering how helpful i've found them. good luck!
A broad survey.......2006-03-15
I was looking for something with more depth. This scratches a very broad surface of the more popular rides. One can get much of this info on the Internet, perhaps making this book obsolete.

Interesting guide book. The routes are well explained and detailed enough to not let you worry about getting lost. Well worth the money
A gem -- especially for Southern California.......2003-12-07
I don't know how well this book handles Oregon and Washington, but the Southern California section is outstanding -- meticulous attention to detail both in terms of road info and in terms of background on towns and accommodations. Also, there is tons of fascinating stuff here on local natural history, place-specific cultural lore, and interesting goings-on, all worth many times the price of the book. The writers seem to be in love with this part of the world, and their enjoyment of it is contagious. For anyone planning to ride along the part of the coast south of San Francisco (including Catalina Island), you will be missing out on a lot of useful information if you don't get hold of this gem. ENJOY!!

The team of Japanese experimental graphic designers who work under the name Dainippon Type Organization have continually reinvented the art of typography. Over and over again, they have taken type beyond its practical dimension, turning it into an active and essentially playful experience. Here they present the reader with a huge, happy, and quite literate blow to the side of the head: a retrospective show of 10 years of font and graphic production, for playing, looking, thinking, and enjoying the alphabet at one's own will. Usefully, the book converts into a set of playing cards, a full set for each typeface, thus allowing the reader to become a player. How to play? Make words out of the individual letters that appear on each card, or make up your own game, inspired by the Dainippon's wacky fonts. The designs which appear in this book are Kurofune (inspired by origami), Bug (insect-like), Katahira (comic book Japanese), Dentype (very analog), YMC (think CMYK), Cube (3-D geometry), Box (imagine a 3-D letter made out of cardboard and then unfolded), and Union Jack (the entire alphabet in the British flag). Dainippon Type Organization was formed in 1994 by Tetsuya Tsukada and Hidechika, who consider themselves typography performers. As their name indicates, many of their ideas are discovered within the elements of Japanese characters, elements which the designers morph into unique typography. Always novel and innovative, Dainippon Type Organization has recently been experimenting with motion typography.

Literature from a scientist.......2001-10-22
He's the world-class physicist who got Einstein to send a letter to Roosevelt about building a Bomb before the Nazis. He's also a world-class writer. These short stories are superb; prove one doesn't need to lead the life of a writer to write magnificently. A great read on a rainy night. Transparent and stylish, these stories will last.

True Beginners & Beginners w/ High Aspirations.......2003-04-09
As a windowsill orchid hobbyist who already owns a few beginner's books, I found this one to be beautifully designed with gorgeous photos and photographic step-by-step directions on full repotting (including root trimming), dropping on an orchid (moving a healthy but overgrown plant to a larger pot w/o touching root system), orchids in baskets, and mounting orchids on bark. The section on pests/disease is also very clearly articulated with large photographic examples.
The book does, however, go into quite a bit of detail about different types of orchid pollination, propagation, as well as greenhouse construction. While these topics might be interesting for the first-time grower, I'm a little unsure as to whether most "newbies" starting out with a handful of plants have THAT kind of space, time, or money to devote to the hobby, at least at first. I was also hoping for a bit more info on miniature orchids. Then again, coming from a f/t grad student who has to relocate herself and her orchids every 6-10 months, you may want to take that with a grain of salt! Buy this book? Yes! But you may later want something else that suits your specific growing conditions.
Gardener's Guide To Growing Orchids.......2001-05-17
I have 5 or 6 books on basic orchid care and this supasses all of them in depth of content. It is simple to understand and the pictures are breathtaking. More importantly, they examine every part of orchid care, not just the basic air, light, water. There are detailed instructions on how to hybridize your own orchids, which I have only seen before in costly advanced books. I feel this book is an excellent resource for the beginner who has an orchid or two and wishes to know more. It's a handy reference for "just the basics" as well.
A must for your orchid "library".......2000-07-14
This book has some of the best pictures of orchid blooms I have ever seen - like looking at the real plant! The book goes beyond the usual with color pictures of the structure of the different types of orchids and a wealth of informational "tidbits" surrounding the beautiful color pictures. The oversized book allows for larger type that makes reading it a pleasure. A wonderful resource book to add to your "orchid" library.

I loved this book! I love picture books, so this satisfied my desire to stare in awe at gorgeous gardens, however, it also was very detailed and explicit in how to content. I thought it was the perfect balance between inspiration and explanation.

This book was given to me as a Mother's day present... and I thank my mother-in-law every time I open it! As an organic gardening teacher in a Montessori elementary school, I have found this book to be inspirational to children and grown-ups alike. The photos are gorgeous, of course. But it is the way Larkom puts her gardens together that is the most compelling aspect of this beautiful book. You will never look at your vegetable (or flower) garden the same. Mixing edible flowers into vegetable beds in stunning geometric patterns, weaving intriquing and useful elements like benches and fences out of willow or other local materials, making phantasmagorical trellises for peas and other climbers, creating an environment for you to spend hours of pure joy while eating fresh, organic food... does it get any better than this? The end of the book features an alphabetical listing with pictures and growing info on most of the plants she works with as well as great how-to tips on every aspect of home gardening. My students, after looking through the pictures, cannot wait to get to work making a dream garden for all of us to thrive in. Just buy it!
