Here is another beautifully illustrated book for the young child. I use this in my classroom as we make an apple pie for our cooking experience in the classroom.

4 out of 5 stars MMM mmmm. Time for pie........2004-08-20

When I was a kid I loved loved loved reading picture books that involved apple pies. I didn't particularly care for pie in real life, but on the printed page there was no desert more delectable and delicious to read about than scrumptious nummy buttery apple pie. I had to grow to adulthood before I really grew to appreciate this particular dessert, and I've been devouring them ever since. Looking back, I was also a big fan (when younger) of the beautiful apple blossom. For those of you living in Michigan, the apple blossom is the official state flower (a fact remembered almost entirely by elementary teachers and school children). Looking at Zoe Hall's enjoyable, "The Apple Pie Tree", a book at combines these two long distant loves, I find myself wishing I could have had this book at my disposal when I was a kid. A tale that examines the step-by-step process of how apples grow and are later turned into pies, it effectively conveys seasons, growth cycles, and (literally) the birds and the bees.

The heroine of this story and her baby sister show the viewer the process that goes into making apple pie. In the winter, the apple tree that sits in their backyard is bare and bereft of life. With the advent of Spring, buds turn to leaves and birds build nests in the branches. Spring means baby birds and apple blossoms covered in bees. In the summertime the blossoms become small green apples. We watch as the kids play in the sprinkler and the baby birds fly from the tree. Then, oh joy of joys, the tree is filled with shiny red apples. These are picked, cored, cut, and piled into a pie shell. A sprinkling of cinnamon and sugar on top seals the deal and out of the oven pops a delicious apple pie. And, as our heroine is quick to point out, "There's nothing as good as an apple pie you grew yourself".

For those readers who live in geographic areas that can support apple trees, this might be the perfect book to read before heading out to the nearest orchard and picking a few. Even those who claim to be cuisinely challenged will find the recipe for apple pie in the back of the book a simple process (though I advise you to buy a crust rather than make one, as the book suggests, if you're inexperienced). The back of the book also provides a little more information on how exactly bees turn blossoms into apples. Nothing like a little plant reproduction lesson to sum up a swell story. This book would read especially well in the fall, since that's the time of year the tale ends with. Sadly, the story's art is not particularly exceptional. Using a painted and found-paper collage technique, it gets the message across but doesn't really blow you away. I found myself wishing idly that Lois Ehlert (of "Snowballs" fame) had been placed in charge of the illustrations here. Still, illustrator Shari Halpern does her best and the pictures, while not spectacular, detract from neither the narrative nor the lessons. They're just a bit dull.

This book will not make you crave apple pie if you've never craved it before. And it will not stun you with its brilliance. It's just a nice little story about baking, time, and the circle of life (sans that whole icky death part, of course). If you'd like a colorful picture book for some autumnal reading, this "The Apple Pie Tree" is probably a sure-fire winner. I should mention too, that if you DO happen to enjoy the delightful taste sensation that is apple pie, this book WILL make you crave it. Intensely. Best read with a piece in your hand for easy reference.

Interested in teaching about plants, the seasons, pollination? Read this book. Along with wonderful pictures, you can branch out into so many different science related topics. The apple tree grows, is pollinated, and finally, in fall, is ready for harvest. This book even includes a recipe for apple pie!

5 out of 5 stars A favorite!.......2000-04-05

This book is a favorite for me and my 3 year old son. We love following the apple tree from winter to fall with the two sisters. They're growing "the best part of apple pie" right in their yard. It's help to teach him about the seasons as well as the process of growing something and the pride in having a hand in creating something. He is enthralled by the collage style illustrations and watching the baby robins grow up in the tree. A recipe for the apple pie is included at the end of the book, but we always use our own. We just bought a second copy of this book to give to my son's preschool library and the teachers and children both were thrilled for the new addition. Sure to be a classic!

        Book Description

        INTRODUCTION

Landlocked and isolated at the heart of South America, Bolivia encompasses everything that outsiders find most exotic and mysterious about that continent. Stretching from the majestic icebound peaks and bleak high-altitude deserts of the Andes to the exuberant rainforests and vast savannas of the Amazon basin, it embraces an astonishing range of landscapes and climates. The strangeness and variety of this natural environment are matched by the ethnic and cultural diversity of the country's population: the majority of Bolivians are of indigenous descent, and the strength of Amerindian culture here is perhaps greater than anywhere else in Latin America.

Indeed, to think of Bolivia as part of "Latin" America at all is something of a misconception. Though three centuries of Spanish colonial rule have left their mark on the nation's language, religion and architecture, this European influence is essentially no more than a thin veneer overlying indigenous cultural traditions that stretch back long before the conquest. Though superficially embracing the Catholic religion brought from Spain, many Bolivians are equally at home making offerings to the mountain gods of their ancestors or performing other strange rites, such as blessing motor vehicles with libations of alcohol. And although Spanish is the language of business and government, the streets of the capital buzz with the very different cadences of Aymara, one of more than thirty indigenous languages spoken across the country.

Geographically, Bolivia is dominated by the mighty Andes, the great mountain range that marches through the west of the country in two parallel chains, each studded with snowcapped peaks which soar to heights of over 6000 metres; between these two chains stretches the Altiplano, a bleak and virtually treeless plateau that has historically been home to most of Bolivia's population, and whose barren and windswept expanses are perhaps the best-known image of the country. Northeast of the Altiplano, the Andes plunge abruptly down into the tropical rainforests and savannas of the Amazon lowlands, a seemingly endless wilderness crossed by a series of major rivers that flow north to the Brazilian border and beyond. East of the Altiplano, the Andes march down more gradually through a drier region of fertile highland valleys that give way eventually to the Eastern Lowlands, a vast and sparsely populated plain covered by a variety of ecosystems ranging from dense Amazonian rainforest in the north to the dry thornbrush and scrub of the Chaco to the south.

This immensely varied topography supports an extraordinary diversity of plant and animal life - the Parque Nacional Amboró, for example, is home to over 830 species of bird, more than the US and Canada combined - and new plant species continue to be identified every year. The country's underdevelopment and lack of infrastructure have been a blessing in disguise for the environment, allowing vast wilderness areas to survive in a near-pristine condition and serve as home to a variety of wildlife, ranging from the stately condors that glide above the high Andes to the pink freshwater dolphins that frolic in the rivers of Amazonia.

Though it covers an area the size of France and Spain combined, Bolivia is home to fewer than nine million people, most of whom live in a handful of cities founded by the Spanish. Some of these, such as Potosí and Sucre, were once amongst the most important settlements in the Americas, but are now half-forgotten backwaters, basking in the memory of past glories and graced by some of the finest colonial architecture on the continent. Others, like La Paz and Santa Cruz, have grown enormously in recent decades as a result of mass migration from the countryside, and are now bustling commercial cities where traditional indigenous cultures collide with modern urban environments. Given all these attractions, it's perhaps surprising that Bolivia remains one of South America's least-visited countries. This is largely due to its very remoteness and inaccessibility: even from the capitals of neighbouring countries, Bolivia is a distant and peripheral land, cut off by towering mountain chains or endless expanses of forest and swamp. Ignorance, too, plays a part. Following a diplomatic slight in the nineteenth century, Britain's Queen Victoria is said to have ordered the Royal Navy to bombard Bolivia's capital; on learning the country was landlocked and the capital lay high in the mountains, she supposedly crossed its name from her map and declared, "Bolivia does not exist". Bolivians often cite this apocryphal anecdote to illustrate the outside world's lack of knowledge about their country, and not without reason - over a century later, Victoria's mistake was repeated by a US senator, who demanded an aircraft carrier be sent to Bolivia's coast to enforce compliance with the War on Drugs, only to be told that Bolivia didn't have a coastline. Amongst outsiders who have heard something of Bolivia, meanwhile, the country has a reputation for cocaine trafficking, military coups and chronic political instability. But though these clichéd images have some basis in reality, they obscure the fact that Bolivia is one of the safest countries in the region for travellers, and largely free of the violent crime that blights some of its neighbours. In addition, for those who make it here, the fact that Bolivia is not yet on the major tourist routes is an added advantage, since you're unlikely to find yourself sharing the experience with more than a handful of other foreign visitors, whilst local attitudes have yet to be jaded by the impact of mass tourism.

5 out of 5 stars For the money this is the best Bolivian guide available.......2004-07-12

I have reviewed travel guides for seven years and this is one of the best I have used. Recently (5/04) I traveled for three weeks through Bolivia and found this guide to be very reliable, user friendly and exact.

The guide has excellent maps, brilliant descriptions of what to see and do, a very good 'Brief History' section, a good 'recommended books' section and the layout is excellent.

Everywhere possible James Read has included the internet addresses and web pages for additional information.

Most important James Read's recommendations for accommodations were always "spot on".

If there is a downside to the guide it is the restaurant recommendations. You need to take his recommendations 'with a grain of salt'. His praise of establishments (4 out of 11) did not live up to the hearty accolades he gives out, though most did. That and the accommodation price code (why not just state the US dollar amount?) are the only distracting aspects of the guide.

So, if you are going to explore this isolated, landlocked, astonishing country, you will not find a better guide out today. This guide along with Herbert Klein's "Concise History of Bolivia" (see my review) would be a great package. Highly recommended 4.5 stars

                      Book Description

This is the sole book devoted to a unique Arctic breed, the Inuit sled dog, its place in the traditional life of the Northern people, its future, and its role in Polar exploration. The book comprises detailed descriptions of its physique, temperament as well as a nutrition guide. Also documented is how this beautiful dog, indigenous to Canada, has survived for thousands of years in the harshest of climates, and yet was very nearly extinct a mere twenty years ago.

                      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book.......2004-09-24

This is a great read, and I loved it. I do agree with the author on who should own the Inuit Dog and who should not. The showing people have wrecked entire breeds of sled dogs, and I don't want to see that happen to this breed. My own Inuit Dog would have been put to sleep if she was sold to someone who didn't need a good sled dog, but just wanted a pet. This book helped me understand some of Kallie's odd quirks that my other Alaskan Huskies don't have. This is a very informative read and I would suggest it to anyone that owns or is interested in Inuit Dogs, and anyone interested in the Arctic region, and the Inuit people.

Was excitied to find a book on this topic (Inuit dogs) but upon receiving the book, was dissapointed in the misguided information and the lack of supporting documentation. The book is mostly the authors opinion and not particulartly well written. The photos were nice though.

5 out of 5 stars Inuit Canine Guardian.......2002-09-16

This immensely informative narrative is beautifully written, full of fascinating facts and unique anecdotes of personal experience as well as astute observations. The author presents a "caring candor" when presenting this breed which should secure it from mismanagement and misplacement in unsuitable homes and situations. Many photos, remote and recent. A true Guardian of the Canadian Inuit Canine!

5 out of 5 stars The Canadian Inuit Dog.......2002-07-15

The previous reviews for this title refer to the first edition. I found that the shortcomings with the non-captioned illustrations and photos have been corrected in the 2nd edition and the number of photos has been increased considerably. The «fat opinions» about who should own this breed remain but they are there for a reason. The Inuit Sled Dog International, the breed association co-founded by the author, has on more than one occasion had to rescue dogs from people who were led to believe that Inuit Dogs make great suburban family pets. Canadian Inuit Dogs are magnificent animals - loyal, hardworking and intelligent - but they are sled dogs and pack orientated. The author has produced the only book that details the history, physical attributes, temperament and management of this unique breed. A worthwhile read for anyone remotely interested in dogs, in cultural history, polar exploration or animal nutrition.

                      1 out of 5 stars Inuit Dog.......2001-07-08

This book is informative about this breed, especially since it is the only book available on the Inuit dog. Lots of good info on the history of the breed is included. I was very disappointed that the author was overly opinionated about who should own one of these dogs. For a book that should be singing the praises of the breed, she spent too much time discouraging the reader from ever owning one. Nonetheless, if you are interested in this breed, it is the only place to get much information.

                      Book Description

Nowadays, food is "manufactured," imported, and marketed for convenience and year-round availability. For anyone who knows the difference between a supermarket tomato in January and one fresh from the garden in July, FROM THE GARDEN TO THE TABLE is a welcome account of a family's quest to grow and eat their own fruit, vegetables, and herbs.
FROM THE GARDEN TO THE TABLE celebrates the vital link between growing, cooking, and eating food. For Monty and Sarah Don, the process of preparing a meal begins with thinking about what seeds to buy. Food is grown and cooked in one continuous process and with one common goal-enjoyment.
This highly original book contains clear and detailed instructions on how to cultivate and cook a wide range of herbs, vegetables, and fruits. Accompanied by full-color photographs that chronicle a year in their kitchen and garden, it aims to inspire food lovers to integrate their gardens and kitchens wherever they live and whatever their taste in food, as well as promoting a timely and appealing style of living.

My high school did Love of the Nightingale my freshman year, and it's the most amazing play. I read it the first time and liked it, but when I read it again the play struck me as brilliant because I got lots of foreshadowing. Several years before they did Our Country's good, but I was littile (I went to see my sister), so I don't remember it. Amazing playwright alert here, people!

I also have never read this book but my college is staging love of a nightingale i think that timberlake wertenbaker writes with such poise this book cant be missed.
The play love of a nightingale is in a greek style but the plot is so intriging that anyone who previously thought greek tragedies boring will be proved wrong this one keeps you reading. i should know as a college production being forced to pick a greek play we werent pleased we must have got the best one possible brilliant to stage brilliant to read this book is a must if u are considering staging a greek production dont send ur audience to sleep liven them up with philomele's urging desire to know about sex and when she wishes she didnt. If the rest of this book is as good as love of a nightingale its worth it.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest playwrights, not to mention female........1998-06-18

This book of plays is one of the best and most interesting I have read. Wertenbaker tackles many subjects including female cross-dressing, female sexuality, and the plight of the criminal first sent to Australia. Very different topics and all well written.
