    Book Description

How does a bacterial cell grow during the division cycle? This question is answered by the codeveloper of the Cooper-Helmstetter model of DNA replication. In a unique analysis of the bacterial division cycle, Cooper considers the major cell categories (cytoplasm, DNA, and cell surface) and presents a lucid description of bacterial growth during the division cycle.
The concepts of bacterial physiology from Ole Maaløe's Copenhagen school are presented throughout the book and are applied to such topics as the origin of variability, the pattern of DNA segregation, and the principles underlying growth transitions.
The results of research on E. coli are used to explain the division cycles of Caulobacter, Bacilli, Streptococci, and eukaryotes. Insightful reanalysis highlights significant similarities between these cells and E.coli.
With over 25 years of experience in the study of the bacterial division cycle, Cooper has synthesized his ideas and research into an exciting presentation. He manages to write a comprehensive volume that will be of great interest to microbiologists, cell physiologists, cell and molecular biologists, researchers in cell-cycle studies, and mathematicians and engineering scientists interested in modeling cell growth.

    Key Features
    * Written by one of the codiscoverers of the Cooper-Helmstetter model
    * Applies the results of research on E. coli to other groups, including Caulobacter, Bacilli, Streptococci, and eukaryotes; the Caulobacter reanalysis highlights significant similarities with the E. coli system
    * Presents a unified description of the bacterial division cycle with relevance to eukaryotic systems
    * Addresses the concepts of the Copenhagen School in a new and original way

      Book Description

Bacterial toxins that act inside cells interact very specifically with key components of the cell and some even manipulate the cell in subtle ways for their own purposes. These potent toxins, described in this book, will be of interest to both microbiologists and cell biologists. Some of these toxins are conventional multidomain toxins that are self-programmed to enter cells. Others are delivered by type III mechanisms, often as a package of potent molecules. The molecular targets for all these toxins mediate signal transduction and the cell cycle to regulate the crucial processes of cell growth, cell division and differentiation. Thus these potent toxins are not only responsible for disease, but also provide a powerful set of tools with which to interrogate the biology of the cell. In addition such toxins may act directly to promote carcinogenesis and hence their study is also of interest in a wider context.

      5 out of 5 stars superceded title.......2007-04-16

This is a GREAT book, very complete and lucid as the sky. However it is basically superceded by the later and longer "Physiology of the bacterial cell," by a similar or identical set of authors. I own both books, because I initially was not aware of the latter.

I strongly suggest the books. I am not sure "Physiology [...]" includes 100% of the material from "Growth [...]," but I see no substantial reason not to study "Physiology [...]" only.

These authors, fine scientific writers, moreover are mostly (or all) editors of the massive king-of-the-hill reference "Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium: Cellular and Molecular Biology." So they know what the hell they are doing, in a big way. But these books are far shorter and more readable than the latter; you can read em while you eat lunch. However they are written at a high level and to an impressive completeness.

5 out of 5 stars Working through the pain of loss of a pet.......2002-11-15

In our society we have various acceptable ways to deal with the loss of a loved one. Everyone knows what is expected of them and the rituals that we go through to help us to work through the grief. However, the loss of a family pet can be very devastating and leaves the pet owner with no set of rituals to help move pass the pain. "Parting Words/Parting Ways: Saying Good-Bye to Your Pet" fills that void.

In the first part of the book Laura Carlson discusses the five stages of grief, the five stages of healing, memorial services and memorializing your pet. Throughout the book one thing stands out, that it is okay to grieve over the loss of a pet and there are ways to work through the grief.

The second part of the book contains many letters from pet owners who have lost a pet. The letters are written to the pets and show the deep emotions involved with the loss of a loyal companion. Reading the many letters one comes to realize the strength of the bond between many pet owners and their pets and the depth of grief that many go through. Recommended for those going through such a loss as it offers constructive methods of working through the loss and validation of their feelings.

A beautiful tribute to pets of many, like me, who loved them dearly. Personal testimonials and words of love spiced with writings of people like Winston Churchill, Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, George Eliot and those of whom you've never heard but whose thoughts are beautiful seques to the pet owners' loving messages. Laura Ritter Carlson has a heart of gold and a true understanding of God's gift to humans (our pets) and those of us who loved and continue to love them.

It's one thing to be a gardener, and entirely another to be a plant collector. But the gardeners of the world are still interested in unusual plants, and collectors of rare plants do find it necessary to know how to keep their prizes alive. Ken Druse's earlier book The Collector's Garden covered much of the ground between the two areas of interest. In this fascinating small addendum to the plant collector's oeuvre, Druse helps gardeners to determine which of the 80 beautiful collectible plants he includes will be happy in their very own gardens. It's a perfect companion volume to The Collector's Garden as well as an interesting introduction to collectible plants.

                                    Book Description

This collection of essays written by his former students and colleagues represent the many foci of interest that Erik Zurcher has shared with them during his tenure as professor at Leiden University. They include discussions of Confucian philosophy, Buddhist and Christian polemics, the spread of Jesuit literature and anti-Christian attitudes among the literati, Ming aphorisms, the Chinese pictorial of skulls and skeletons, the Ch'ien-lung Emperor's eightieth birthday celebrations, Sino-Korean relations, and the "little traditions" in Chinese historical development, secret societies and kongsi. The book demonstrates how Zurcher inspired a wide range of interests in problems of Chinese history from heterodoxy, to local development, to hsiao-shuo traditions, but always in the highest traditions of philological scholarship.

I find this book to be a very useful source of information for our Community Theatre group. We recently tried to cast a show and AGAIN came up short in the singing men department. I hope to use this going forward to make more informed choices about potential musicals for our group.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent if a Little Out of Date.......2005-07-28

This book is ideal for the community theater artistic director or school teacher who is looking for a musical to put on.

The title implies to me that here you will find instructions on how to stage the performance. Instead it's about selecting the play you might want to put on.

And it's description of some plays you might want to consider is very good. It gives you the story of what's happening, but far more information of a specialized nature that you need to know. For instance, how many performers, what kind of sets, costumes, props, special effects, etc. A very important detail given about the plays is where to go get rights. This can save you a lot of time.

I have only three complaints about the book. First it needs updating, there are a lot of new plays you might consider. Second, it needs a section on smaller plays. My stage needs plays with 6-8 people, few of the ones listed here are that small. Third, the book needs to be about three times as long, I'd like to see all the plays that are available in a format done like this.

                                    4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable reference.......2004-06-15

This useful book sets out to do for musicals what Theodore Shank's "500 Plays" does for the theater: provide plot synposes, production notes, and useful background for a wide variety of shows. It's aimed at theatre groups, but it's equally enjoyable as a reference guide to musicals for the general reader -- perhaps the best one of its type in existence.

For each show, the entry contains: the creators; background on its original run, including awards won; a plot outline; assets and liabilities; roles; dances; sets, costumes and props; instrumentation; marketing suggestions; production suggestions; resources (for example, videos of the show); and details of the rights.

The book was clearly a labour of love, and it shows sometimes in the inconsistent treatments of different shows. Some shows get a one-sentence plot summary, for others it runs to several paragraphs. However, by and large it's an excellent resource, with its crisp, no-nonsense assessments of assets and liabilities. It packs a lot of information into a very small space.

5 out of 5 stars A priceless resource for directors and producers of theater!.......2003-04-23

I got a job teaching high school drama despite having zero experience doing it. Worse, the only musicals I knew and had seen were "Cats" and "Phantom of the Opera." So, when the band and choir directors starting throwing ideas for shows at me I was at a total loss. How would I know, without reading, listening to, and/or seeing every show they mentioned if it was a good idea or not?

Then, I found this book. Now, when the choir director tells me she wants to do "Lil Abner" I can reply that it seems dated. Or, if she wants to do "Flower Drum Song," I can tell her that we don't have enough Asians in our pool of talent. I can counter to her that "Into The Woods" is recommended for high schoolers, despite her objections to the contrary. I can recommend that we perform "Little Shop of Horrors" because it is a periennial money-maker and kids love it!

The book is divided into sections like "Shows for a big budget" or "Musicals that rely heavily on costumes". There's "Musicals that feature choreography" and "Musicals with Little Choreography." It's helpful to find the shows grouped together like this.

Then, it breaks down the show, giving a synopsis, assests, liabilities (often the most important information!!!), cast needed, etc. If you're passingly familiar with a show, this is all you would need. If you don't know the show at all, this is enough to warrant further investigation or to rule it out entirely.

I love this book. I would be lost without it. The only bad thing about it is that it doesn't have every single last musical ever created in it! But, it must contain more than two or three hundred shows listed, so that should be enough to get you by. I highly recommend this book.

3 out of 5 stars Lets do put on a musical!.......2001-08-19

Although there are glaring faux pas in this book..wrong vocal range, rather irrelevant political comments by the the author, and and to me the biggest mistake, giving away the ending of one musical, this book is a must for any musical director on any level. I have been involved in musical theatre in various forms and organizational levels for many years and really enjoyed looking into what the author had to say about some of my favorites. Having just witnessed a LONG awaited production of 1776 by my local community theatre group, I found the book right on the money in the case of a musical that has "too many men". Since the director has on occasion corresponded with Mr Filichia,I would imagine that he might have used the book as well. Would be nice if there were some kind of performer cross index. And the musical that he gave away the ending of is "Shenandoah"(talk about an overabundance of men!) So dont read the last paragraph of the description.....

From the supplier: An examination of the authors who contributed to the "Australian Library Journal" and "Australian Academic and Research Libraries" from 1985-1994 revealed that library and information scholars tend to work alone when doing research. There were few articles by international scholars and none by a collaboration of Australian and international authors. More money needs to be allocated for scholarships and research. Technological advances, such as e-mail, will increase future collaborations.
