Excellent guide of over 100 common edible plants.......2006-10-10
I've used more comprehensive guides than this, but I've never seen so much valuable information together in just 66 pages. In my own experience foraging, I've used several other much larger guides, but I had to use several sources to find all the commonly found edible plants that I've seen hiking through Illinois, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. While other guides devote most of their pages to plants rarely seen, this little book is almost completely filled with edible plants you are likely to see on a short hike. It also gives recommended uses, preparations, and warnings. There is also a small section on commonly found poisonous plants. I have not seen the accompanying video. While I'd recommend reading more verbose guides as well, I've seen no other book that gives so much valuable information in so small of a space.
Author's Unabashed Review.......1999-12-11
This second edition has color photos. There are detailed recipes and identification tips. We cover Native American medicine, Chinese medicinal uses and modern pharmaceutical uses. The book is called the basic essentials because there are many edible wild plants out there that are not fit to eat! In this book I focused on plants worthy of your cooking efforts.
The book, unlike others, is organized by how you stumble across wild plants: geographic context. Or, more simply, they are organized in the environment that they are found. Thus, plants in wet areas are treated separately from meadow plants. And plants of the forest have their unique section separate from the seashore and mountianous plants. Yes, we have added plants from the seashore and tidal zones as well as my favorites from mountainous areas...We didn't leave the sunbirds out either. There are several desert edible included.
There is a important section on poisonous plants and poisonous look alikes.
There are more recipes, better recipes and lists of my top ten favorite wild plants and my top ten favorite edible flowers.
With color photos and attention to plants that are quality food (vitamin, mineral and phytochemical content) this new field guide is a great value for under ten dollars.
Identify, collect, and eat over 100 plants in North America........1997-06-28

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book!.......2007-10-09
This book was a godsend for me. I was blessed with a beautiful 19 year old parrot that was given to me. Fortunately I found this book. It addressed all of our problems. I'd recommend this book to anyone looking for advice.
GREAT BOOK.......2007-02-06
This is a great book dealing with parrot training. People can find any information for various problems relating to parrot behaviorism.
Great book.......2006-03-08
I'm so glad I purchased this book. It gave me the information I need to raise a happy, well-adjusted bird. The information on body language was quite helpful.
Parrot Training: A Guide to Taming and Gentling You Avian Companion.......2006-03-05
there is a lot of information in this book.
Great book but beware ..........2005-11-11
I have had my African Grey for about a three weeks and have been reading everything I could get my hands on before I brought her home. I really loved this book, but wanted to let folks know that this book is a reprint of the book by the same author titled "The Pleasures of Their Company: An Owner's Guide to Parrot Training [Hardcover]. Don't make the same mistake I made and order both.
Customer Reviews:
not at all recommended.......2001-06-14
Nice glossy pictures. Text very uneven. Much of the advice is dated or simply wrong. Seems like "cut and paste" of some old parrot book from the 70's. We now know that parrots can speak some words in appropriate context and with comprehension. We don't give dog kibble anymore. I don't know of anyone who gives their parrot grit... The book seems to be pure merchandising..it looks pretty so buy it, you find out too late that the content isn't very useful.
Rip-off.......2001-06-13
This book has gorgeous pictures, but the text is completely worthless. It reads like a so-so beginner's book on parrots from the 1970's. The is much misinformation, such as the statement that macaws do not talk! Do not waste your money on this book like I did.
Polly doesn't want this cracker !!.......2001-06-07
This is by FAR one of the WORST books I have read or had the misfortune of ordering in a LONG time. Here is a quote straight from this book: "Complement the fresh foods you prepare for your macaw with parrot mixes and dry kibble DOG food." Ummm....They call it "DOG" food for a reason!! Considering the variety of pelleted foods out there made specifically for birds recommeding DOG food is pathetic and inexcusable. The other sad fact in this book is that it seems to condone the breeding of hybrid macaws =(. All in all, there is NOTHING worth recommending about this book. The glossy pictures don't make up for information which in the VERY LEAST will drastically and negatively affect the health and lifespan of your companion bird!!! PLEASE do not buy this book, as neither the publisher (TFH) or the author deserve to profit from a book that would not even be worth using for cage liner!!
An informative, well researched handbook.......2000-06-23
I am very impressed with the research that the author, (Loren Spiotta) instilled into this book. It is very detailed with many helpful pictures. This book is excellent for the person that is thinking about buying a macaw, or wants more informative tips on one that they may already have. I have read it, and will use it for future reference.

Outdated information.......2000-01-27
This book was probably good for the time it was written (1981, according to the copyright), but it is really substandard in light of nearly 2 decades of further research into bird behavior. The first half of the book is about choosing a bird, caging and nutritional requirements, and grooming (wing and nail clipping). The remainder of the book is a cursory look at basic taming (of wild-caught birds, which isn't really an issue since importing birds has been outlawed for several years), and a brief explanation of how to train. If you want a good resource for training, you'd be better off with a more current book on behavior modification (try Mattie Sue Athan's books, for example). This book is mis-titled, and should not pretend to be a real "training" book. On the bright side, it has quite a few wonderful pictures of conures.
A Good Source for Conure Behavior Information........1999-09-06
This was a good book, however there was more a theatrical feel for the type of training that was covered. Also, it didn't really cover many types of training, more accurately, it suggesting what could be done--often telling you ways of playing up natural instinctive behaviors, verses training new behaviors. Philosophically I didn't agree with much of the approach used, but as with many things, it is how you view your relationship with your companion bird. A good addition to your library in any event. These birds are complex and all of the information you can find should be read.
the book is excellent and very helpfull on how to deal with.......1999-02-20
excellent book! It gives you a lot of good advice to train your new bird pet.
Customer Reviews:
Vague.......2000-05-12
I didn't rate this well because; Ifelt it should be more directly relating to it's title. It had a bunch of nice pictures (which could of had species info), but really didn't talk as much of training or taming as it cuold have. Very brief on this info for being titled such.

Customer Reviews:
A fine price guide.......2003-11-28
There are plenty of price guides for comic books. I like this one because it seems the cleanest to read and follow.
Misprint... But excellent Guide!.......2003-07-13
Overall, the Comics Values Annual 2003 is an excellent Guide for Comic Book Collectors. It is easy to read and understand. The only thing that bothers me is that the Page Numbers are off by 28 Pages compared to the Index. This must be due to the 28-Page Part in the front of the book. The page numbering should have been started over on Page 29 (where the actual Price Guide begins). I keep this guide together with a calculator, look up the comic in the Index and add 28 Pages to that.
Comic Values Annual 2003.......2003-05-01
The ratings of each comic is very good, however the biggest problem is that the index gives wrong pages as to the location of many of the comics. Then too the binding is coming apart after only 45 days use. It would be a good thing to offer a replacement that is correct and better bound.
Always a pleasure.......2003-04-22
Well, well, well, it must be a new year because the new slate of comicbook price guides are (finally) out. As always, the best of the bunch is the one put out by CVA. Not only is it the easiest to read, and contains a wealth of information, it is simply the best-organized book of the bunch. I highly recommend it.
Book Description
Thirty years ago, Jo Ann and Jigs Gardner moved their family of six from New England to a remote farm on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. In an environment wracked by extremes of weather and blessed only with thin, rocky soil, this couple wrested beauty and sustenance from the land.
Gardens of Use & Delight offers the deep pleasure of their story, one filled with the lessons of hardships overcome and the rewards of independent living. It also gives gardeners everywhere, regardless of the extent of their landscape and ambitions for it, the tools to succeed in blending garden form with function. In their charming narrative, the Gardners tell tales of hit-and-miss garden experiments, sharing boundless practical information, from recipes for homemade catsup, to successful methods of enhancing soil, to tips on roses and suggestions for flowering herbs that both decorate the landscape and season food. Additionally, Elayne Sears's stunning watercolors detail the plantings in the actual gardens, landscape, and other features that comprise the Gardner farm. Most of all, the Gardners' plant-by-plant philosophy offers lasting insight into the joys of an integrated garden. Before adding hardscape and trees and shrubs to create the "bones" of a garden, the Gardners show that the most satisfying way to develop a landscape is to let it evolve, taking time to know the contours of the land and the needs the garden must meet. As they counsel: "Life itself, combined with a love of growing things, will push you in the right direction."
Customer Reviews:
A Book Useful & Delightful in Many Ways.......2002-10-12
It would be hard to overpraise this exceptional book. Written by two people who are master practitioners of our grandparents' ways of living as well as master gardeners, this book is a gem!
It is at once a book on gardening (flowers, herbs, fruits & vegetables) and independent living, a book of recipes and remedies, and an arresting narrative of thirty years of work creating a self-sufficient life (and all manner of wonderful gardens) on the bare bones of an old, abandoned farm on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. It is also a book of considerable visual beauty, being generously illustrated in vibrant watercolors by Champlain Valley artist Elayne Sears.
I found Gardens of Use and Delight not only meaningful and enjoyable reading, but also a very useful reference for many aspects of flower, herb, fruit and vegetable gardening, and for all manner of things "homemade." The recipes in the chapters, "The Kitchen Garden," "The Contained Garden," and "An Old-Fashioned Fruit Garden" are mouth-watering gems often rescued from the cookbooks of yesteryear (the Herb Salt and Apple Ginger recipes to name two favorites!) And the wisdom and humanity distilled from the lives of these two people who decided to truly live their beliefs is instructive and inspiring.
Perhaps more importantly, though, the book is a reminder of the elements of a rich and healthy life that have been forgotten, if not lost, in these times.
I recommend it highly!

Customer Reviews:
updated version.......2006-12-21
The updated version of this book is great! This book has taken a look at publicity, touring, contracts, branding, marketing, trademarks, merchandising, and record companies. Unlike the previous editions of this book, this book goes into music downloading and it's consequences. This book is a must have for anyone looking at music management or performance!
What a Great Resource!.......2001-06-07
This is an excellent book, and its subtitle (Artist Management: The Ultimate Responsibility) is proved throughout the book. Written by a college professor, this book gave me so many answers about the music industry that I was looking for. Topics include Personal Management, The Contract, Legal Aspects, Marketing the Artist, The Record Company, Touring, Care and Feeding of the Creative, Merchandising, Endorsments & Sponsorship, Business Management, and Case Studies on Legal Battles. Before I read this book, I was remotely considering going into music business management. Now I'm sold!! Now what does that tell you about the depth of this book?
