Customer Reviews:
buy another guide :-(.......2003-06-24
This garden book fails in many ways. As an illustrated guide, it fails miserably. The pictures are small, blurry, sometimes over-exposed and most are not representative of the subject. Worse is the fact that most plants are not even illustrated! You are left wondering what a plant really looks like. I have had to research most of the plants mentioned via internet or leafing through other books.
Another fault is the hardiness zones of some plants are incorrect. The authors need to redo this information. My particular pet peeve is the mention of plant pathogens-- they give a list of plant ailments, but do not tell you how to prevent, or treat it.
I gave it only two stars because of all these faults. It is an expensive book, but definitely not worth the price. Look elsewhere.
Disappointing pictures.......2000-06-03
This book was ordered as a house gift for my hosts in CoralGables. The magnificent trees that line their street are notidentifiable among the many ficuses listed. Tree photographs were either a detail of foliage or in total without any quality of detail but not both ways, making it difficult to identify anything already not familiar. The 48 different palms were photographed incompletely and it was difficult even to spot the royal palm by its light, magnificent trunk. For the most part artist illustrations would be preferrable to these photographic limitations.
I give it 2 stars only because of the succinct information on the plant descriptions. It would also have been better if the illustrations had not been isolated in the middle of the book ...
This is my favorite book for plant selection........1999-06-10
This book is wonderful for anyone landscaping in Florida. Plants are listed by scientific name, but there's a cross reference to common names in the back. It will help you choose appropriate plants based on light requirements, drought tolerance, climactic zones, etc. My favorite part is that it lists human hazards for every plant (most have no hazard, but it will tell you if the plant has thorns, toxic flowers, is a mild irritant etc.). This is invaluable when you have young children helping in the yard. Betrocks other guides are nice and have lots of pictures, but this one is much more extensive.

Betrocks Florida Plant Guide.......2003-03-13
I moved to Florida from NJ. Betrocks Florida Plant Guide has been a life saver for me. The pictures are great. Because I am near the ocean I was very concerned about plants withstanding the salt spray and constant winds. I refer to this book very often and have recommended it to everyone who asks. Great reference.
Betrock's Florida Plant Guide.......2000-03-03
Betrock has provided a wonderful source for the Florida gardener. This book provides the hardiness zone for each and every plant they review, which is very helpfull for the northern Florida gardener that is trying to plant a tropical looking garden, and does not want to replant each year. There are color pictures of every plant, many of them when they are in bloom, and they are on the same page as the subject matter (no looking all over the book for the pictures). Everything from how to culture, care for, and plant, to special notes specific to each plant. The notes frequently cover what happens to that tropical plant, that you plant in zone 8 when you really should have planted it in zone 9-10, like will it come back from the ground in the spring or are you going to have to be looking for that Lowe's/Home Depot reciept. If you are a serious botanist this is not your book, but if you are the weekend warrior, that is aspiring for greatness, this is the book for you. You will love the simplicity.

Life-changing trip to Italy.......2007-08-29
In 2004 I took a trip to Italy. My intent was to seek out places of high spiritual vibration (due to the historical presence of saints) and to meditate in those places. The Pilgrim's Italy was invaluable in carrying out this vision. Many of the places I visited were off the beaten track and accessible and authentic beyond my imaginings (especially the hermitages associated with St. Francis, about an hour outside Rome). My spiritual life was transformed by my meditations in Italy, and I am forever grateful to the authors for their informative guidance.
Great Resource for Inspiration and fun.......2007-07-19
We traveled for a month in Italy and it was wonderful to have this book at our side. Suddenly we would find ourselves in a new area and look up the region in the book, only to find yet another saint we might visit! It is said that you can't hardly throw a rock and not hit a saint in Italy, so one could not possibly expect the book to contain them all. But it is wonderfully researched and leads you to even some back and sleepy places in search of inspiration. I remember taking a side journey on the Amalfi coast in search of one of the saints, which resulted in a most spectacular diversion to our otherwise calculated plans, a wonderful surprise worth finding. I recommend the book if you are interested in finding even some of the magnificent inspiration available in Italy.
EXPERIENCING ITALY THROUGH THE SAINTS.......2007-07-08
We just spent 3 weeks in the Assisi area of Italy in May 2007. The book, The Pilgrim's Italy:A Travel Guide to the Saints was invaluable. It quided us to places where we could meditate and pray and go very deep into the vibrations of the saints. It also educated us on the lives of the saints in that area. We felt it gave us an experience that most people are unaware of when traveling to such holy places. Because we read the book prior to the trip and took it with us, we had expections that we could actually experience the presence of the saints and we did. Our expcetations were fulfilled more than we could have imagined. This book is a must for anyone who wants to have a spiritual experince of Italy.
No St. Benedict or St. Scholatica.......2007-05-09
I received this book today and am unpleasantly surprised and dismayed that I cannot find in it St. Benedict, sometimes called the father of western monasticism, nor his sister St. Scholastica. Even non-Benedictines know of the rule of St. Benedict, which is a guidelines for monastic communities. Neither Subiaco in Umbria, with both St. Benedict and St. Scholastica monasteries, nor Cassino, with the great Monte Cassino monastery which Benedict founded later, are included. I bought the book largely because I am planning a trip to Subiaco; this book is no help. If you want to learn about St. Benedict and St. Scholastica, Subiaco or Monte Cassino, you will have to go to The Christian Travelers Guide to Italy or to somewhere else. The Pilgrim's Italy is also larger and heavier than The Christian Travelers Guide, though the later still has a lot of information.
The Spiritual Side of Italy.......2007-01-31
Forget Roman Holiday, the Milan Fashion Shows, and trying to figure out if the Da Vinci Code is true (it's not).... follow the lives of the Saints in a pilgrimmage that makes St. Francis of Assisi, Padre Pio, and many Italian Saints from centuries past resurrect in your mind's imagination. Get up close and person with your Catholicism and make this one journey akin to Saul/Paul's on the road to Damascus.

Long Walk to Freedom: The Autobiography of Nelson Mandela
ASIN: 0766014630 |
Book Description
Ahmed Kathradaâs autobiography is a moving read about a man who not only observed, but also actively participated in the shaping of a countryâs history. Born a shopkeeperâs son in a small rural town, he became the trusted confidante of some of the most prominent political figures in South Africaâs struggle history, among them Nelson Mandela and Walter Sisulu. Politically active at the age of 10, Kathrada devoted his life to the freedom struggle in South Africa. Persecuted, driven underground and sentenced to life imprisonment at the Rivonia Trial, Kathrada spent 18 years on Robben Island, where he grew close to both Mandela and Sisulu, whom he regarded as a second father. On the island, in his tiny garden patch, Kathrada buried the original draft of Mandelaâs autobiography, until such time it could be smuggled to London.
In this book, truly a collection of memoirs, he affords us rare glimpses into his and other activistsâ lives during the struggle and imprisonment, and sketches poignant cameos of those who would become South Africaâs post-apartheid leaders. This is a fascinating book about a modest man who experienced a momentous life.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Book.......2006-04-18
As a white immigrant growing up in South Africa during the apartheid regime, I was subjected to some discrimination as well; because our views were not what the government would have liked. Mr. Kathrada's book again brings back the frustration one felt of the dishonesty and cruelty of the white protestant government, hiding behind racial superiority and religion, and keeping everyone misinformed. This is a must read book for everyone, to remind us of what should not be happening in this world again. I am very proud of what the new S.A. government has achieved.
A remarkable book by a remarkable man.......2005-10-07
Memoirs allows us to enter into the life of Ahmed "Kathy" Kathrada, a very humble yet very real hero, whose steadfast adherence to the highest ideals helped alter the future of a nation.
Ahmed Kathrada played a pivotal role in ending apartheid, helping his country choose a path of reconciliation instead of revenge, and building a new democracy.
This book offers snapshots of his unusual life: An Indian, Muslim South African, Kathy became politically involved at the age of 10 and his activism continued despite repeated arrests, detentions, and bannings as well as increasingly severe measures by the Apartheid government. In 1964, he was convicted of sabotage and sentenced to life imprisonment, along with Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu and the other Rivonia Trialists.
Fellow prisoners for 26 years, these leaders were also the closest colleagues and friends, sharing the unshakable belief that truth, justice and democracy would ultimately triumph over oppression and racism.
Released from prison in 1989, at the age of 60, Ahmed Kathrada was at the center of dramatic changes in South Africa and went on to serve as a member of South Africa's first freely elected Parliament, Parliamentary Counsellor to the Office of President Mandela, and Chair of the Robben Island Museum.
He is proof that human beings are capable of exceptional goodness even in the most difficult circumstances, and that political power can be wielded with integrity, empathy, and compassion. He also possesses a wonderful sense of humor as well as unique insight into his close friends and colleagues, including Nelson Mandela.
Ahmed Kathrada's Memoirs offer an essential and all-too-rare view into the mind and soul of a truly great and profoundly gentle revolutionary.
memoirs of one of the leaders in overturning apartheid in South Africa.......2005-08-30
From Ahmed Kathrada's lifelong involvement in the thick of South Africa political activism and his 26 years in prison in the notorious Robben Island and Pollsmoor prisons for political prisoners, he became the fellow activist with and confidant of Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, and other historic figures in the struggle against that country's apartheid. And with them, Kathrada played a leading, though for the most part less visible, role in developing a post-apartheid South African political and social system. Though apartheid was abandoned years ago, the full story of the struggle against it is just now beginning to emerge, as the leaders of this struggle are finding the time to write their memoirs in their later years after moving out of the political arena and giving way to the succeeding generation of leaders. Kathrada sees his own "Memoirs" as a "modest addition to the growing and most welcome body of work that is emerging about a particularly significant period in South Africa's recent history." Kathrada's modesty kept him from moving into the political, governing, arena as visibly as others, notably Nelson Mandela. But it's clear from this modestly-written "Memoirs" that Kathrada was a major figure in bringing apartheid to an end and setting South Africa on a new course.

Book Description
This timely documentary history provides a unique analysis of contemporary South African politics, covering the forty-two-year period between the ruling National Party's electoral victory of 1948 and the subsequent institution of apartheid, to the recent release from prison of Nelson Mandela. The book follows the changing nature of the African nationalist movement over these years, focusing on the central roles Mandela and Oliver Tambo have played in the African National Congress and the ANC's success in overcoming government opposition and persecution to reemerge as the recognized voice of the anti-apartheid movement. Representative writings and public statements of Mandela and Tambo, together with key ANC documents and lucid interpretive essays by the editors, help bring this continuing struggle to life. Also included are compelling accounts from Mandela's fellow prisoners and visitors that show how Mandela's conduct in prison enhanced his leadership status and helped make him one of the world's most famous political prisoners. Providing a clear background necessary for an understanding of the present negotiations between the ANC and the South African government, Mandela, Tambo, and the African National Congress is invaluable to anyone interested in black South Africa's struggle to free itself from apartheid.

Book Description
This book tells the story of three Black men--Z. K. Matthews, Nelson Mandela, and Stephen Biko--who committed their lives to win freedom for all South Africans. Using a sociopsychological retrospective, Juckes interweaves accounts of the lives of these three men with sociopolitical developments to reveal the complex interaction that occurs between social processes and individual actors, revealing how leaders come into being and how their actions influence social developments. Each man's political character captured the demands of the time and used the available resources of his age in the quest for freedom; the pressure--over time--from the activities of these three men and the movements they supported made liberation inevitable.
Book Description
What do things mean? What does the life of everyday objects after the check-out reveal about people and their material worlds? Has the quest for 'the real thing' become so important because the high tech world of total virtuality threatens to engulf us?
This pioneering book bridges design theory and anthropology to offer a new and challenging way of understanding the changing meanings of contemporary human-object relations. The act of consumption is only the starting point in objects' 'lives'. Thereafter they are transformed and invested with new meanings that reflect and assert who we are. Defining design as 'things with attitude' differentiates the highly visible fashionable object from ordinary artefacts that are taken for granted. Through case studies ranging from reproduction furniture to fashion and textiles to 'clutter', the author traces the connection between objects and authenticity, ephemerality and self-identity. But beyond this, she shows the materiality of the everyday in terms of space, time and the body and suggests a transition with the passing of time from embodiment to disembodiment.
Shortlisted for the Design History Society Scholarship Prize 2001-2002

This is a book to savor, packed with beautiful close-ups of plants as well as photos of the author's various borders. Written by someone who obviously loves both the plants and the planting process, it's like taking a walk with an experienced gardner and getting the inside story on each flower.

Book Description
The Jews were expelled from Spain in 1492. Those surviving the ordeals they encountered tried to rebuild their personal lives and to reconstruct Sefardic religious and cultural traditions in North Africa and in the East. This volume tries to depict the world of one of the refugees who formed part of the cultural bridge between Spain and the new havens of the Sefardim. Rabbi Abraham Saba of Zamora was a preacher, cabbalist, and biblical exegete. He attempted to settle in Portugal, suffered the persecutions instigated by the Crown with his coreligionists and was finally expelled to North Africa. His literary works and thought are put in the proper cultural context and are analyzed against the background of historical reality.

Customer Reviews:
Better, but no legacy.......2004-06-12
Lovely, simple, classy, touching...like Laura, but not nearly enough to catch her essence. Beats the kort bio by miles. The little vignettes are perfect, though skimpy. Thanx to Vivino and Sebastian...two moving, insightful tidbits. The back cover says she died at 40...wrong!...it was 49...and this is important. Laura was into the details and this should not have been missed.
New cd out this Tuesday..."Spread your wings and fly..." I can't wait!
finally.......2004-06-09
I ordered this in January & I understand there were some problems with the publisher. OK I'm patient.
It's a book of her song lyrics arranged by album, with The Morning News and a poem that was printed on the Nested jacket. The last title Coda, I don't think was actually written by Laura, but was a cover song as a hidden track on Angel In The Dark. (If that's true I hope no one sues) There's not much extra except a few hand written scribbles, mostly set sequences. Speaking of a few extras: it would have been better, since this is supposed to be Laura's "poetry", to include writings that she did not record as songs. Obviously someone has all of her notebooks to cull through and reveal the unknown writings of Laura Nyro--like the early version of Man In The Moon that was more of a children's song.
The comments by those who knew her and worked with her give insight but why a full page for a few sentences? Rickie Lee Jones' essay turns out to be a great commentary.
The CD is a disappointment. Snatches of Laura talking about her craft with lots of white noise so she's hard to understand and it's very chopped up. It's not an interview at all. If this was a project Laura really wanted to leave as a legacy (as the book states), more care should have been taken with it. The early demo of And When I Die shows the Nina Simone influence and Lazy Susan has Laura singing in a deeper voice.
For those who love Laura Nyro's music, buy it. It's worth having.

Living Australia.......2000-04-04
The Australian Dictionary of Biography is not a lightweight and is certainly not bedtime reading material. Not unless, that is, you are a fan of Australian history and the people who made it. In 14 hefty volumes, the lives of the more important figures in Australian history are narrated in around 2000-6000 words. In all, there are 14 volumes which are divided into chronological periods. Volumes 1 and 2 cover prominent personages from the years 1788-1850 (Australia was settled by the British in 1788); volumes3 to 6 cover the years 1851-1890; volumes 7 to 12 cover the years 1891-1939, and volumes 13 through to 16 will cover 1940-1980. I say will, because the publishing schedule is at present up to volume 14 of the intended 16 volumes. So, how does it rate? From this Australian reviewer's perspective, ADB is a truly monumental work which encapsulates the lives of Australian history, and by so doing, encapsulates the history of the largest island continent itself. As a large scale biographical project which began in 1957, this publishing work may be described as nothing less than a treasure trove for the researcher, scholar, or interested layman. As its publishers point out, ADB is not "a pantheon of immortals", but aims to "reflect the rich variety of Australian life by including representatives of almost every occupation - shearers, drovers, governesses, nurses, undertakers, marine engineers, bag-pipers, circus proprietors, axemen, trumpeters, ballroom dancers, murderers, bushrangers and confidence men." The Australian Dictionary of Biography is a truly great work in every sense of the word. If you are a reader who has a passion for Australian history and the people who made it, then this is for you, particularly if you are an academic, a researcher, or a long-term student in this arena. As an investment in Australian biographical history, it is a winner.

Book Description
Volume 14 of the Australian Dictionary of Biography, the second of four volumes to deal with the 1940-1980 period, records the lives of Australians whom many of us will remember from the recent past. It reflects the changes and constants in Australia's demographic composition and social values in the years of World War II and its aftermath. A range of biographies illuminates large themes in Australia's recent history, themes such as immigration, accelerating industrialism, urbanization and suburbanization, war, material progress, increasing cultural maturity, conservative and radical politics, conflict and harmony, and the loss of isolation and innocence. It also reveals something of the greatness and the littleness of which human beings are capable.
