Book Description
Looking for a faster, easier, and fun way to identify plants? Botany in a Day teaches you the patterns method of plant identification, so that you can discover the wonderful world of plants around you, wherever you go.
Instead of trying to identify plants one-at-a-time, Botany in a Day give you a way to learn them by the hundreds, based on the principle that related plants have similar patterns for indentification, and they often have similar uses.
The one-day tutorial included in the text teaches you seven key patterns to recognize more than 45,000 species of plants worldwide. Master these seven patterns and you will be ready to use the included reference guide--Thomas J. Elpel's Herbal Field Guide to Plant Families of North America. Here you will find the patterns for indentification and the patterns of uses for the majority of plants across the continent.
Botany in a Day is used as a guide by thousands of individuals, plus herbal schools and universities across North America.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Resource!.......2007-10-01
Botany in a Day provides an excellent overview to field botany. By learning plant characteristics by family, the reader can more quickly identify their plant by identifying the patterns each plant family presents. The book provides a page or two (or more!) on dozens of the most common families in the northern half of the US. Each plant family section contains additional information about the plant genera represented in this family. The keys to plant families allow the reader to quickly determine what section to turn to. This book is best coupled with a plant field guide to individual species that is grouped by family. You can use the Botany in a Day information to narrow your selection to the family and the field guide to identify the specific species.
I highly recommend this book to both lay and professional people who work with plants.
botany in several months.......2007-03-16
This book lays out the general approach through which a beginner can make sense of the vast amount of information he or she faces in learning botany. I found it most helpful.
Fantastic.......2006-07-19
Take a really dry subject and turn it into a book I couldn't put down!
Tom Elpel's style is right on target and his book is turning into a constant companion for my outings!
Wonderful book for intuitive understanding of the subject.......2006-04-09
In the opening chapter, this book presents a wonderful simplified story of the evolution of plants, from a single cell to modern complex flowers. Both children and adults can gain a unique, intuitive understanding of this process from this explanation. My compliments to the author. He describes each plant family with interesting anecdotes and high quality line drawings. It's the first plant book whose lack of photographs didn't matter. Great tips for identifying families and individual plants have helped me enormously. Bravo!
Teaches the patterns method of plant identification.......2004-12-09
Any interested in plant identification should consider Botany In A Day: The Patterns Method Of Plant Identification as an important guide. Thomas Elpel (Director of Hollowtop Outdoor Primitive School, Pony, Montana) deftly teaches the patterns method of plant identification, providing a method for learning about groupings of plants based on the idea that related plants have similar patterns for identification, and similar uses. Black and white line drawings accompany descriptions of different plant families and their identification processes.

Moon Guide to Glacier National Park .......2007-07-30
I found this guide to be well written and very informative. It is nice to have such a good base of usable information contained in one source. The author did a great job in pointing out the highlights of the park.
Top-notch guide to Glacier and Waterton.......2007-06-25
The Moon Handbooks guide for Glacier National Parks was one of just a few books I could find when searching for help planning a recent trip there. While there may not be many options, it turns out that none were needed because everything I needed was right here. The book begins by briefly introducing the geographic areas of the park, and then offers a few sample itineraries. Once the preliminaries are out of the way, the author proceeds to get down to the real detail of exploring each geographic region in detail. A guide to exploring the sights, recreation options, accommodations, and food are included for each region. The book closes with some more basic information like the best ways to get to Glacier and some history of the area.
I found the information in the guide to be helpful, accurate, and fairly complete. It's description of the two hotels I stayed in were spot on for both the positives and negatives. We didn't spend a lot of time in restaurants on the trip but from what I saw this part was also accurate. About the only flaw with the book is that it is printed and obviously can't be constantly updated. When I arrived at Glacier, I learned that a large section of Going-to-the-sun road was closed for the next several weeks and this included the Logan Pass area. I say this not to blame the guide but to encourage people to check with the park rangers in advance to see if there are any road closures that might affect your desire to go.
This book is a definite keeper for those planning a trip to Glacier National Park. It also contains information on Waterton for those interested in making the drive up to the Canadian side (and I would encourage readers to do it if at all possible). It's writing is concise and clear, and the information is complete and accurate.
Good guide.......2007-03-09
Purchased to planned September visit for first time visitors. Well written and thoughtfully laid out. Recommended.
Excellent choice for Glacier.......2006-07-11
This book is an excellent choice for anyone planning a trip to Glacier National Park. The sections of the book correspond well to geographic sections of the park; which makes it helful when trying to find a place to stay or eat or to look up attractions, hikes, etc. Though not necessarily geared to families with kids, like ours, the material in the book is very useful in planning activities with kids such as distance and difficulty of hikes. The information on lodging and eating establishments is very current. The text is well written. Get a copy of this book and plan your trip today for an experience you and your family will never forget.

Good stuff.......2007-09-21
Moon's guide to Montana is an unexpected delight. It's in the details: the small towns with unusual histories, the monuments that go unnoticed by the side of the road, the off-the-beaten path places for which we learned to divert our course. If you're interested (as we were not) in AAA Tour Guide type reviews, this will not do the trick. If you really want to learn something about the place through which you're traveling, this is the book. Some of the large attractions, like Glacier National Park, get shorter shrift than in other guidebooks (Foders was one of the others we used), but Moon has a guide specific to Glacier if you want additional info---and it is voluminous! We're converts.
Not the best, not the worst.......2003-08-07
Just finished a 6 week trip through 6 states with the family. We used the Moon books in every other state because they were the best we could find. We (my wife and 8 and 10 year-old kids) thought they all had a lot of information, but were helpful only with pointing out highlights of an area. When it came to finding places, it was lacking in details. They all list restaurants, but only a few in the area. In Montana we were fortunate to find another, much more complete and easy to use book (The Ultimate Montana Atlas). The Moon Montana book went pretty much unread as it never seemed to give us the information we were looking for. Were it the only thing we had to use, it would have sufficed. It is small, which is one advantage, but you will need several other books to supplement it (ie maps, hikes, scenic drives, etc.). You get what you pay for with this book. My advice is to spend a few dollars more and get one that has everything in it.
Thorough, Unique and Interesting.......2001-12-30
I would highly recommend any of the Moon Publication Handbooks, the Montana handbook is an excellent example of the accurate, in-depth coverage the Moon Company provides. There are many little things covered in the Moon handbooks that are omitted from the big travel names such as AAA and Frommers. This includes personalized information on ghost towns and local restaurants, and unique details on off the beaten path destinations often omitted from other major travel guides. Keep up the good work Moon!
A good fill in book.......2000-03-11
I bought this along with several other books on Montana. Its a good resource and has a lot of information, but I found it was hard to use. It was more like a textbook that required me to dig and take notes. While they did provide a few maps, they were sketchy and really didn't help me find where things were located. This is compared to the Montana Roadside Directory which I found to be nicely laid out, and easy to use. I would still recommend the purchase of this if your planning a trip as a supplement to other information. It was my second favorite book of the several I bought.
Montana Handbook Gives Great Information.......1999-06-03
The Montana Handbook gives very insightfull information on Montana. The book is throughly detailed and is far supior to the AAA tourguide. This book gives information on ghost towns that are in areas not well traveled, and is great for people who want to travel the 2 lane highways of America and see something besides Interstate Highways. If only the Idaho Handbook was half as good.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2007-01-15
This is a great book. I highly recomend it to any dog owner. It is a great way to help understand your dog and a great tool in training. We now refer to it as our dogs hand book!! Great read and it helped so much!
Very Generalized.......2005-11-08
I found the ifnormation in this book to be very general. It seems the tried to cram a lot of information in this book however, all the information is just a breif summary. While there were a few good tips to use in the book, I found the training advice to be way too breif. This book would have been a lot better if they would have been more detailed about the training and cut out some other information that just made the book seem cluttered and unfocused.
The best dog training book I have ever read!.......2003-11-06
Of all the dog training books I have ever read-- this one is my favorite--
it's the book I recommend most to anyone who is getting a new dog-- It is extremely well written with excellent advice, easy to follow training methods- In her book she not only teaches owners how to train their dog -- but how to understand how your dog thinks and learns, and why dogs do the things they do. I followed her instructions for teaching my puppy to sit, stay, and also house training and it made training my puppy easy and fun for the both of us. On top of all that- the book is full of entertaining stories about people and their dogs (so its fun reading her book). I can't say enough good things about her book. Anyone who has a dog should read it! (by the way: another person on this site wrote a review of linda's book and said it had typical advice about choke train methods- who ever wrote that must be confusing Making Friends with another book- because Linda Colflesh's book argues against choke chain methods of training- so someone should take that review off the site- the person who wrote it didnt read the book.
Misleading Title.......2002-07-18
This seems in general a very sensibly written dog training book. The commands given are pretty standard, and the instructions are clear and logical. My only real gripe is that the title implies positive training, which this is not. This book teaches very traditional training, with leash corrections and other such, not the positive training method espoused by Karen Pryor (Don't Shoot the Dog). The author does place a welcome emphasis on not punishing your dog for what he doesn't yet understand, and on praising and rewarding good behavior, but positive training is a method, not an attitude. Adding more praise to traditional training gives you a kinder gentler traditional training, not positive training.
That said, if you're more comfortable with traditional methods than with click and treat, this is a good book to work from.
Easy reading and very informative!.......1999-02-08
Hi Linda! This is so ironic, I recently purchased a White Alaskan Eskimo and I borrowed your book from a friend of mine not knowing that you were the author. Well I read it and I think it is going to be quite helpful while raising this little monster. You should see him, I could not resist. Well, again the book was and is super! Won't bore you. Drop me a line at Taurkus@aol.com. That would be nice. G-

Book Description
Now in paperback, this book introduces an important and largely neglected subject and considers conservation methods in a global context. It traces the history of some of the great floors of Europe from the fourth century B.C. and outlines the development of mosaic, tiles, marble and parquetry floors in secular buildings. The early Christian pavements in basilicas, temples and cathedrals, the creation of medieval tiles, ledger stones and monumental brasses, their destruction by iconoclasts and re-creation during the Gothic Revival, are also discussed.
Leading authorities, archaeologists, architects and archivists consider the latest methods of recording and repairing historic floors, including those of cathedrals, country houses, the monumental tiled pavements of the Palace of Westminster and other public buildings. Management policies to protect outstanding floors in over-visited sites are considered and historic features particularly at risk, are identified. Urgent action is recommended to contain the damage caused by the dramatic increase in tourism throughout Europe.
The only definitive guide to historic floors published in association with ICOMOS UK (International Council on Monuments and Sites)
Gives you the tools to identify and address problems with historic floors whatever the situation
Draws on the knowledge of a range of experts who have worked all over the world

From the supplier: The Texas School Book Depository houses the Sixth Floor Museum, the site where Lee Harvey Oswald occupied when he allegedly assassinated John F. Kennedy. The main concerns of the facility are security management since two fires have already occurred in the building and the increasing number of tourists posing a threat to the preservation of the facility. The building security is controlled by the design of the facility, security equipment such as metal detectors, X-ray machines and motion detectors, and direct transport of visitors to the sixth floor through an elevator.

Book Description
As computer games become more and more like Hollywood productions, the need for good story lines increases. Research shows that stories are highly valued by game players, so today's studios and developers need good writers. Creating narrative - a traditionally static form - for games is a major challenge. Games are at their heart dynamic, interactive systems, so they don't follow the guidelines and rules of film or T.V. writing. Game Writing: Narrative Skills for Videogames addresses these issues and is the first book written to demystify this emerging field. Through the insights and experiences of practicing game writers, the book captures a snapshot of the narrative skills employed in today's game industry. This unique collection of practical articles provides the foundations to the craft of game writing. The articles, written by member of the International Game Developer's (IDGA) Game Writer's SIG, detail aspects of the process from the basics of narrative and non-linear narrative to writing comedy for games and creating compelling characters. Throughout the articles there is a strong emphasis on the skills developers and publishers will expect a game writer to have. The book is suitable for both beginners and experienced writers, and is a detailed guide to all the techniques of game writing. This book is an essential read for anyone wishing to get into this exciting field, particularly for new game writers wanting to hone their skills, and film and T.V. scriptwriters who want to learn how to transfer their skills to the games industry.
Customer Reviews:
Great for knowledge on how video games are made.......2007-03-12
Great book for seeing how video games are made!
Good, but Focused.......2006-12-30
This is a good book. It suffers from having multiple authors in that it lacks the consistent tone that most writng books have, but all the writng is still good.
It is focused on the interface betwen the writer, the game, and the team, and is long on cautionary points. It will be of value to anyone who is writing, producing, or leading all or part of a game team, particularly if they lack practical experience.
If you are only interested in a book about writing for games, Lee Sheldon's 'Character Development and Storytelling for Games' is probably a better choice, but if you are intending or actually writing game, or working with a game writer, this is a good read and a potentially vital resource.
A 'must' for any video or computer game writer........2006-10-14
Computer games are becoming more like Hollywood productions, requiring good plots and valued story lines which use good narrative styles. In Chris Bateman, Editor's Game Writing: Narrative Skills for Videogames are practical articles on how to do so, written by members of the International Game Developer's Association and covering all kinds of game writing, from comedy to plots. A 'must' for any video or computer game writer.

The days of the super simple games like Pac-Man are long gone. Today's games must entertain with all the finesse and skill of a Hollywood movie. This is not to say that a game must be all narrative, neither is a movie.
This book is the first complete guide to writing stories for games. They are not stories alone, that would just be a book. But nor are they just action games. They are games with a story.
The book is edited by Chris Bateman, an expert in market oriented game design and narrative. He has gotten an even dozen of game developers to contribute in various aspects. They range from game developers to writers, to educators, to journalists. Each is able to bring his/her own insight to the book and to the writing profession.
As computers, software, game engines (and always more memory) develop, games can grow more powerful, more lifelike, more movie like.
Book Description
Games for Actors and Non-Actors is a unique piece of writing. Boal's Methods transform theatre into a democratic arena where the spectator becomes the `spectactor', contributing ideas, taking over roles, and using theatre to confront problems such as sexual harrassment, poor pay, homophobia, and racism. For this first translation into English, Boal has included fresh material to make it the most up-to-date introduction to the techniques of Image Theatre and Forum Theatre available. Games for Actors and Non-Actors is a valuable handbook of methods, techniques, games, and exercises, and is a genuinely inspiring work by the world-famous author of Theatre of the Oppressed. It is designed to help anyone - whether actor on non-actor - rehearse for real life: make the fictional real.

Essential Resourse.......2005-09-20
This text is an essential publication for any drama practitioner, teacher, actor. It encloses many unique activities that vary in levels of ability that enable the participants to explore various facets within drama/ theatre.
A DEFINATE MUST HAVE!!!
Perfect for Church.......2004-01-22
This book has given me several tools to use in my Sunday School class on the gospel of Mark. It helped the group of college students and adults, really get a more embodied sense of the gospel story, human ethics and Christian theology. If you are looking to do something different in your church, buy this book!
A valuable introduction to the Theatre of the Oppressed.......2000-04-13
This text represents a valuable introduction to the theories and practice of Augusto Boal. GFA, unlike its predecessor the Theatre of the Oppressed, contains practical exercises as well as an introduction to the important theoretical work of Boal. Boal's major innovations (such as Forum Theatre and Image Theatre) are introduced, discussed, and illustrated with examples, thus effectively allowing the reader to enter into the dialogue of using and refining the techniques. I would recommend this to any performer, artist, educator, or theatre worker who is unfamiliar with the work of Boal, and seeks new methods of understanding and transforming practice, and empowering both audience and participants.
Augustus Boal for all ages.......2000-04-12
Definitely a must-have in all drama classes. Don't recycle the same old exercises which have nothing to do with the world around us - the work of Boal is accessible and important to students of the theater of all ages.

Book Description
Sir Horace Robertson was one of Australia's most colorful and controversial generals. His career spanned forty years and two world wars, as well as a lengthy period in both Japan and Korea between 1946 and 1951. Australian Brass not only charts the life and career of "Red Robbie," it uses his career as a vehicle to trace the development of the Australian regular army and the professional officer corps. It is also the first account of the occupation of Japan from a senior officer's perspective, as Robertson was Commander-in-Chief of the British Commonwealth Occupation Force after the Second World War. This episode is set in the context of the continuing relationship between Britain and the Pacific dominions.
Customer Reviews:
A Fading Hero.......2007-08-14
Horace Robertson was a unique Australian, and brought to his military career the qualities of detailed planning and leadership at a time when they were most needed. He did not play the internal political game which had brought some of his colleagues to higher rank earlier than Robertson, but concentrated on meticulous training and development of the troops under his command. Jeffrey Grey's biography reminds us of the important role that Robertson played during and after the Second World War, and highlights the legacy which Robertson left for future generations of military leaders. As he should be, he is remembered through the naming of the forward Darwin Army Base, after one of our most important and successful soldiers.
