I have most of Rick Steves' books and videos. He doesn't cover every place that I'm interested in visiting, but those places that he does cover are done in an interesting and useful way. His descriptions are accurate and the small, hand drawn maps are most useful.

Being a big fan of Rick Steves' "Travels in Europe" series on PBS, I didn't pass up the oppotunity to purchase his latest "Europe Through the Back Door" travel guide. I was pleased to discover that his written work is just as accessible and helpful as his entertaining travel show on public television.

The book is divided into 2 parts -- the first covers a gamut of things to consider when planning a trip to Europe. The topics range from hitchhiking in Europe to handling money & understanding exchange rates. I found his info on the different types of rail passes and how to understand & plan rail travel very useful. Also, his treatment of eating & sleeping in Europe is full of useful gems that even the more experienced traveler would benefit from. Overall, his writing style is very informative & accessible and the book is organized well, i.e., you can use it as a quick reference to target specific areas of knowledge without having to trudge through information you already know.

The second half of the book highlights Rick's favorite attractions in various European locales. It can be used for tips on what to see & where to go when visiting Europe.

One last piece of advice: utilize the information in Rick's "Graffiti Wall" both in his book & on his website. The comments & recommendations of other travelers who've followed Rick's advice are an invaluable resource when planning your own trip.

Basically common-sense suggestions for the traveler. Nothing likely to be news to anyone with much experience, but well written and entertaining. Perhaps a little superficial but that's to be expected when you try to cover an entire continent in one book.

I first read Europe Through The Back Door about 12 years ago. I was trying to decide where to go for a school vacation, with about 2 weeks to spare before starting a job and a very limited budget. Should I go along with my friends to Cozumel, even though I sort of hated the idea of 'wasting' 2 weeks just partying and lying around in the sun? Or should do what I really wanted to do - I take the plunge and go off on my own to explore France? The main thing holding me back was a lack of confidence in my ability to travel on my own, especially outside of the U.S.

ETBD is the book that gave me the confidence and the grounding of basic independent travel skills to do the latter. As the cover says, this is a travel skills book, not a travel guide. It really does what it says.

Oh, and since that first (and wonderful) trip to France I made numerous trips on my own to Europe, including one 3-month adventure with a rail pass and backpack. I eventually ended up living in Europe! And it all started with EBTD.

One comment about the person who had a problem with the warnings against what is usually called ugly-Americanism: Rick Steves may exaggerate this point a bit, but you do see an amazing number of people who do act as such outside of their own country. (This isn't limited to Americans I might add: you see a lot of ugly-Brits, ugly-Germans and so on too.) I think he's just saying that when you are a visitor in another culture, be respectful towards your hosts. That shouldn't be too hard, no?

The Designs of the Paris Salon Brought to You.......2005-08-05

A typical Dover reprint of public domain material, but in this case well done. Original drawings from the Le plus bel album du monde pur les industries de luxe published in Paris at the height of the Art Deco period. These are the design drawings, not pictures of the finished pieces. There is a brief publishers note, but no other commentary to put the designs in perspective.

A good resource for crafts inspirations, but not a book of patterns or designs. Since these are drawings it is not always apparent what the finished piece, if it was ever created, would look like, but perhaps that is all to the better as an inspirational source.

I am confused by Dover's restrictive copyright since the material is public domain, but if you are interested in copying the designs for your own projects you should have no problem.

Overall a fine example of the art deco sensibility expressed in jewelry.

A must for any dog owner unless you've had other materials on this subject or training........2007-04-04

This should be on of the first books any dog owner reads. I was fortunate enough that I got it within two weeks of receiving my new AKC puppy. This will teach you about how your, and others behaviors affect and what they mean to a dog. It explains the instinctive pack mentality of dogs and the way they interpret dogs, animals and persons around them and their places in the pack. It explains how to understand the visual signs and actions of your dog so you will know what to do in the best way possible. My puppy peed in the house twice and pooped three times over a period of the first three weeks. I did not put his nose in it or yell at him. I reacted properly thanks to this book with my actions, care and love. My dog has not repeated this action indoors anywhere. My dog is cooperative in my training techniques and does what I coax him to do. The potty training alone makes the book worth the money but teaching is a breeze as well as knowing what he wants and the way he understands. I've had the precious baby for 10 weeks now. He is happy, intelligent, responsive and very loving. (A very cooperative relationship) It's great!

Orchids have been cultivated in China for nearly 3,000 years, but it wasn't until the late 17th century that tropical orchids from South and Central America found their way to Europe, where they ignited a blaze of controversy. In Orchid Basics, author Isobyl la Croix provides an introduction to the seductive flower that will both inflame interest and demystify the growing process.

Orchids are found on every continent except Antarctica. Between one-half and three-quarters are epiphytic, meaning they grow on other plants, while the remainder, the terrestrial orchids, grow on the ground. Both can be successfully cultivated in greenhouses, but care needs to be taken in the construction, as orchids are discriminating plants. For most species, la Croix suggests glass or polycarbonate sheeting with shaded interiors and high humidity. Orchids can be started as houseplants as long as they are kept warm and humid (kitchens and bathrooms tend to be best). She explains the best types of potting composts to use, the right temperature, the correct amount of fertilizer, and how to water your orchids. "Far more orchids die from overwatering than underwatering," warns la Croix. Black spots and blotches on the leaves are the first sign.

Orchid Basics has a chapter on each of the three most common greenhouse types--cool, intermediate, and warm--and descriptions of the best types of orchids grown in each. Nice title for beginners........2001-01-23

This book is aimed at the reader justing starting on their journey into the world of orchids. The early chapters cover the basics of buying and growing orchids. The last five chapters are especially helpful to the beginning grower as they give specific suggestions for the types of orchids that will do well in the garden, an alpine house and in cool, intermediate or warm greenhouses.

I would recommend this book to someone that is wondering if they really want to take the plunge into the world of orchid growing. The information is presented in an easy to read style without presenting an overwhelming amount of technical language.
