Rodney Dale shows his cat-loving credentials right from the start--and why not? "Pussydom," as he puts it, is a marvelous thing, and artists have long been inspired by feline grace and danger (his first example being a stalking, elongated beast from the 8th-century Lindisfarne Gospels). Dale's high-gloss survey packs in fine art from da Vinci and Dürer as well as some startling children's book illustrations. It also extends to this century's ailurophiles, from Dr. Seuss's skinny troublemaker to Ronald Searle's chubbies to B. Kliban's none-too-slim smart alec. And the author manages to include a surprising amount of fact amid this quadruped fancy. Here he is, for example, on Cardinal Richelieu: "It is, perhaps, disappointing to learn that, as soon as his current set of kittens started to grow up and lose their playfulness, the careworn cardinal pensioned them off and sent for some new ones."

This little book is loaded with images from books of different ages, all about cats. As I turned the pages, it was as if I was strolling through the history of art and literature. I found very interesting how different artists chose to depict felines through the ages, and how this changes according to each artist's backgroung and time.

details not up to standards, but a few good recommendations.......2007-05-15

it doesn't seem the fact-checking was very good here, unless a bunch of different museums in cyprus decided to change their structure of hours in the past twelve months (we missed three different museums because the guide said they were open late starting in may, rather than only july and august). also, we lost half an hour going around in circles in Paphos in a restaurant that was put on the right road, but 2 km south of where it should have been. normally, i'm used to lonely plant doing a better job of verification on these kinds of things, and if i'm not able to rely on it for that, what's the point ?

nevertheless, we did get some good tips and ideas here.

I used Lonely Planet Cyprus a week after it became available (June 2006) and appreciated its compact size, Highlights section, Itinerary suggestions, up-to-date prices, and organizational format. Having said that, I only used it about 5% of the time while my wife and I drove throughout the entire island. Carrying 3 other guidebooks (Rough Guide, DK, and DK Top 10), I found Lonely Planet to be far too brief in explaining the sites, falling well short of Rough Guide's more insightful and intelligent writing. I used Rough Guide 75% of the time and found that to be much better. Still, if someone only had Lonely Planet, they would have a fairly good tool to get around Cyprus to the main sites. It is only half the size of Rough Guide(272 pages vs. 550), which could be handy for travelers seeking to minimize their load. For in-depth understanding and off-the-beaten track exploration, however, Rough Guide would be the better choice.

I expected a "Lonely Planet" guide to help me explore off the beaten track, but I found this book too bland and long-winded to use. Some of the information is useful, but some is out of date. The "Eye Witness Top Ten Cyprus" suited me better to help me explore the beauty and appeal of Cyprus.

First visit to Cyprus.......2005-09-13

Will leave this week for my first trip to Cyprus for a business and partial pleasure trip. The book had all the information I needed so far and found it very useful to plan my trip. It was set up in a logical and easy to understand manner and I will take it with me for reference. It even had some basic language phrases and local customs that might come in useful. After the trip, I could then judge better if it was accurate. At this time I assume it is because it is of a recent printing.

Lonely PLanet makes fine books but this is NOT one of them. I have toured the island several times and apparently the author and I have not been to the same places. Or rather the writer merely went as far as the nearest tourist office and copied the local brochures. I found his descriptions of all of the historical sites inaccurate -- museums the size of 10 x 10 room are described as "large" and worth half a day; sites are described as "near the village" when they are right in the middle -- hence the author was never there. The language glossary doesn't even include "Please, Thank You or Excuse Me."
BUY another Cyprus book

Very good, but hardly the "only" guide to Cyrpus.......2001-03-10

This is an excellent guide book to the island. However, contrary to the previous reviewer's comments there are many other guide books to Cyprus, some of them quite fine - and Amazon sells them too. The Rough Guide is also excellent.

English-speaking Tourist to Cyprus.......2000-11-05

You can't go to Cyprus without the Lonely Planet Cyprus (Travel Survival Kit) by Paul Hellander. It is literally the only travel book in English on this part of the world! Though part of the ancient world and visited by such luminaries as the Apostle Paul, almost nothing is written today in the guidebook area except this! Used books? None. New books? Try to find them. About all you can find are political analyses of Cyprus and its recent past. While many books exist on the Carribean, few exist on the Mediterranean! There are books on the Greek Isles, but not Cyprus. Thank you Lonely Planet for this guide book. It is like gold for the tourist to Cyprus!

This wonderful book came into my hands just as I was going through the agony of deciding what to do for my darling little shih-tzu. He could not be healed, but the vet could keep him alive for awhile longer. I decided I would ask my dog and see what he wanted me to do. He wanted me to let him go. Such a difficult time for me
was made so much easier by having Dr. Monica's book to help me with so many of the questions that came up. How wonderful it must be to have the gift of being able to commune with animals, and write a book so we can all share in her experience, and be helped in making our pets' lives more comfortable since they do so much for us. The book made me laugh and cry, sometimes at the same time.

Camark Pottery Vol 11.......2005-08-31

I was very disappointed in the book. The author goes on and on about the History of Camark, but very little information about the various glazes used. Sorry I bought it.

Enjoyable book.......2000-02-06

Mr. Gifford writes an interesting & comprehensive history of Camark (I live in Arkansas, where Camark was produced). The book features many colorful pages with fair pricing of the items. I learned quite a bit from this book. I'm a new collector & found this book to be quite helpful to me. I have already recognized a piece of Camark I bought for $10 to be worth about $60! That's worth the price of the book!
