This small book provides attractive color pictures of every wildflower that it covers. The first time or sometime enthusiast will enjoy this book much more than the more broadly focused Jaeger and Munz classics that have fewer color plates and devote most of their coverage to the Mohave Desert. 1998 has been an extraordinary spring wildflower year. I have attempted to use all three books and found that my success with this one was such that I was able to find and identify about 3/4 of the flowers in the book just from my trips to Borrego Springs, Mecca Road (Box Canyon), Joshua Tree and the Colorado River.

A ***correction*** to misinformation by "daryoush".......2003-12-06
This is a response to an earlier review that contained a major, major Big Lie.
Specifically, "daryoush" from Seattle, in the course of commenting upon this book and expressing interest in a book about "recent Jewish history" in Lebanon, West bank and the Gaza strip, says the following:
"I like to better understand the Israeli massacres in the refugee camps."
He/she also goes on to make several other specious statements including usage of the term "concentration camps."
Daryoush's statement is a Big Lie masquerading as a review. I have serious reservations about his/her agenda, but setting that aside for a second, the deaths in the refugee camps (that I assume he refers to, related to the 1982 war in Lebanon) were not "Israeli massacres." They were carried out, by all credible accounts, by Lebanese militiamen arguably under Israel's influence. This is not to excuse the killings, nor even Sharon's alleged negligence or complicity, but even in the worst case terming them "Israeli massacres" is simply inaccurate.
One has to wonder about the mindset of someone who would use such a term.
The need to respond to such garbage is a sad commentary upon the state of discourse on Israel and our times generally.

Nice, but incomplete series.......2002-09-10
I just got back from Russia and found this book. I wish I had found this earlier. It was hard to find English speaking guides in Russia as most excursions are in Russian. It would have been nice to read about the Jewish influences in the Russian history before the travel.
I also liked the writing style, very clear and captivating.
For completeness sake, I have one request from the authors....I am planning a visit to Lebanon, West bank and Gaza soon. I hope a brave soul would write about recent Jewish history in these areas before I go there. I like to better understand the Israeli massacres in the refugee camps, the villages and cities that they destroyed, the prisons and concentration camps that Israelis operated in southern Lebanon, and the occupied territories, etc. Such a book would be a valuable tool in understanding the current Middle East.
Terrific travel guide to Russian & Ukrainian Jewish history........2000-04-04

Until Communism fell, the Jews of Russia and Ukraine had been suppressed and denied human and religious rights. With the collapse of the Communists, Judaism has emerged from centuries old persecution and pogrom and the synagogues, monuments, schools and other Jewish historical sites are available and accessible to the western visitor. Ben Frank's A Travel Guide To Jewish Russia & Ukraine is an invaluable, highly recommended travel guide for planning and implementing a trip in search of their family heritage and religious roots throughout Russian and the Ukraine.

Earn Your Sea Legs.......2007-06-25
Originally published in Dutch, this version is translated by Alexis Brown. The author, Alexander O. Exquemelin (spelling varies widely between versions and sources), provides a first hand account of the environs, history and, to him, current accounts of several of the well known buccaneer captains.
Much of the book is in travel log format and describes the various towns, flora and fauna of the Caribbean, especially locales like Tortuga, Panama and Hispaniola. The author describes various animals and often their suitability as food, such as the differing qualities of the various types of turtles and even manatees. His descriptions of the trees and animals are fairly detailed and the modern reader can often make the connection with current names.
The other focus of the book is a set of narratives of two of the better known buccaneers: Francis L'Olonnais and Henry Morgan. The author provides accounts and opinions of the exploits of these two men and their crews, including the less than admirable usage of torture.
This is required reading for any with more than just a passing interest in pirates (I am somewhat ashamed that it has taken me nearly 8 years to get around to this cornerstone for a true understanding of buccaneers). While the biographical content is limited to just two buccaneers, the basic understanding of the buccaneer lifestyle and environment provide a firm basis for understanding much of what transpired during the 17th century in the Caribbean as well as what was to follow in the Golden Age of Piracy.

Want to read about the original Captain Jack? This is the book for you. It's the basis for most of the rest of the pirate books we have. An insider's perspective. Exquemelin was a pirate for a while and both was on some of these adventures and listened in the bars to the stories about the rest of them.

The real pirates of the Caribbean........2006-04-15
The Buccaneers of America is a first-hand account of the life and exploits of real-life pirates in the seventeenth century Caribbean region. There are apparently rather few such eyewitness publications, and this one must surely rank highly among them. Alexander Exquemelin was a buccaneer himself, and relates those stories that he actually witnessed or those that he heard. His own participation is always left vague, and while he witnesses plenty he claims few actions for his own.
As a primary source, Buccaneers presents a lively narrative that any reader should be able to enjoy. Exquemelin first briefly discusses his voyage to the West Indies and then tells something about the islands in the region. While he does then continue with the stories of the pirates (a term he uses at the beginning of the text), he slips easily and effortlessly between tales of battle and daring, and descriptions of life among the other inhabitants of the region. This interplay makes the work come alive as we get a fuller picture of things. Thus, while telling the story of Henry Morgan's depredations on the Spanish towns, he stops to describe the catching and preparation of manatees, or turtles, so some other such thing.
What can the reader expect to learn about the Buccaneers? Quite a lot, though I found myself questioning some of it, and have to wonder how much Exquemelin embellished the stories for the sake of publication. The Buccaneers are invariably presented as warriors of almost superhuman endurance and martial skill, and also as the most sadistic and depraved of human creatures. Time and time again he presents descriptions of the tortures and murders that captive Spaniards were put through. A more extreme example of exaggeration comes when he writes about how four Indians ran two hundred feet into the trees carrying a one ton canoe with them, finally dropping it to make their escape. While such things may find favor with gullible readers of the late seventeenth century, today we can dismiss them as ridiculous.
I suspect that much of it is genuine, or at least close to genuine. It certainly takes no great leap of knowledge to find stories of man's inhumanity to man, and men can become good warriors when their lifestyle calls for it. Certainly while the Buccaneers themselves come across as far from sympathetic, this portrayal certainly makes their lives and exploits come alive.

The original book on pirates.......2005-10-03
This is probably the original source for information of pirates. It contains such a vast compendium of information that it is difficult to select anyone in particular. The cruel reality of pirates is sometimes terrifying; however, in the context of their times this may not have been so shocking. Each reader will take away what they find most interesting. I find that the interaction between the pirates and the indigenous people of these island most intriguing.

This is a book about buccaneering written by one of the participants. Esquemeling was a Dutch physian who went to the Caribbean during the heyday of the Spanish Main. He was the surgeon to Henry Morgan's expedition against Panama City.
Like many educated men of his time, he tried to be a scientific observer of the New World. As a result, you'll see descriptions of flora and fauna of the Americas mixed in with anecdotes about the famous and near famous of the period. The phraseology can be stilted in places, but that is how people spoke at the time.
Is it worth reading? I certainly think so! It's valuable in the same way that Bernal Diaz's account of the conquest of Mexico is valuable, it gives a flavor for how the participants saw themselves. So, if you want real, this is it.

This book was originally written in Dutch and first published in Amsterdam in 1678 - most texts refer to him as a French surgeon, as he originally came in contact with the buccaneers as a result of his 1666 journey to tortuga with the French West India Company. His name is spelled Alexander Exquemelin....
The events of the book cross reference fairly well with Spanish historical documents - most errors are in place names and dates, according to David Cordingly (british historian, and expert on all things pirate).
The Bucaniers of America.......2000-06-15
No one knows for sure the spelling of the man's name of his nationality, but in 1684 Alexander Esquemeling published in London a powerful, some say mendacious, personal reminiscence of Henry Morgan and other pirates. Histerical at times, this work brilliantly recreates Morgan's most memorable, indeed incredible adventures. A must read for anyone wishing to capture an authentic view of the Carribean during the period of pirates and the battles of Spanish main.

I have many Akita books in my reference library but truely wish I had this book when I first became involved in showing and raising Akitas. This book has wonderfully discript photos and dialogue to take you through the proper grooming and stacking of your dog for show. It's not a big book but it is chalk full of the best advice and information I've seen to date. It is easy to follow and to read; clear photos and desciptions for discribing breed faults and correct breed type - a must for new Akita puppy owners. I recommend this book to all my puppy clients.

This book has something for every event in a garden. Planting, designing, what to grow and how to grow it. It is one of the most useful gardening books that I have on my shelf and use it often. In the winter its great to read and work out any previous season problems and plan for the new year.

This is a great book for the novice gardener--whether you're an "innie" or an "outie" (where you garden--indoors or out). It has great ideas for kids gardening, such as fun containers (like tennis shoes) and a living teepee (poles with runner beans). I found it very helpful and informative for the layperson's interest in beginning gardening, as well.

A book to get you started........2007-05-31
If you're the type of person that likes to do things without a lot of theory, this is a great book.
I'm a novice gardener and the introduction gardening instructions just didn't have enough information for me. I decided to purchase Gardening For Dummies and various other books to satisfy my need for detailed information before setting some serious time, money, and effort into a balcony garden for my apartment.
This book has great ideas and did a good job of introducing me to different herbs and plants to grow to be used in cooking. But if you want to get more "hardcore" with gardening I recommend getting other texts as well.
A sweet useful gem of a book...........2003-01-08
First let me admit I am biased, since this gem is written by someone I know and admire, here in Northern California. But it nonetheless a gem of a book with superb photographs as well as excellent advise on Do's and Don't of raising a variety of herbs. I also like the book because it shows that one can successfully raise year round fresh herbs, and do so on an acre or on a small patio. And the author also covers edible flowers another favorite of my families.
Great little book............2002-09-19
LITTLE HERB GARDENS is a great book for the novice. The authors have assembled a lovely collection of photographs and interspersed them with succinct text that explains how to identify and select easy to grow herbs; when and where to buy them (spring, fall, summer, nurseries or catalogs, plants or seeds); how to pot them (containers, soil, etc.); and where to place them (balconies, patios, or in small gardens).
This little book will inspire you to create a green space in a kitchen window, an assemblage before a patio or balcony door, or a collection of pots on the balcony. Herbs grow best in full sunlight, so if your balcony faces south, you are in luck. If you live in a town house or have a small patch of ground you can think more expansively, but this book does not really deal with garden design, or the issues associated with herb gardening. Herbs are frequently garden thugs that run amuck in the open. I suggest you find a more in-depth book such as RODALE'S ILLUSTRATED ENCYCLOPEDIA OF HERBS if you intend to go beyond pots and are thinking of growing mints, yarrows, violets, or some of the other "easy" to grow herbs suggested by this book. RODALE'S book also covers the poisonous aspects of herbs. (Some of them can kill you.)
The last section of LITTLE HERB GARDENS briefly covers kitchen uses of herbs including making herb-infused vinegars and herb-flavored sorbets. If you want to know more, once again you will have to turn to something more comprehensive such as THE COMPLETE BOOK OF HERBS by Lesley Bremness. Even if you can't grow herbs, you can buy them at the farmer's market and some food stores. LITTLE HERB GARDENS is not the only book available for learning how to grow herbs or use them, but it will get you started.
Concise and Beautiful.......2000-06-16
This book has it all--eye-pleasing photography and concise, useful information. The heart of the book is an herb-by-herb description of how to grow the plants. It's organized in a unique way according to where you could keep them--windowsill or fire escape, inside porch, outdoor pots, pantry, etc. There are suggestions for special ornamental techniques (such as topiary) and recipes for culinary herbs. Finally, the book lists seed and plant sources in the U.S. All in all, a real pleasure to read.

Lots of ideas and basic houseplant info.......2005-03-20
I have several books on houseplants, but this one is a little bit different. Other houseplant books are an "encyclopedia" of the different kinds of plants and also includes information on care, propagation, etc. This particular book doesn't go into detail on very many specific plants, so if that's what you are looking for, I would suggest "The House Plant Encyclopedia" by Jantra/Kruger or John Evans's "The Complete Book of Houseplants".
However, this is one of my favorite houseplant books. Although it contains information on care and propagation, it contains lots of ideas for arranging plants and making small gardens. The gardens it covers include:

Orchids
Holiday Plants
Forcing bulbs
Windowsill gardens
Seasonal Gardens

Decorating with Plants
Since the book is a "Better Homes and Gardens" publication, it also includes plenty of photos of rooms with plants and flowers. I thought I was running out of room for more houseplants, but some of the rooms they show have quite a number of plants and are truly "Indoor Gardens". I think those rooms are inspiring because plants can really bring a room to life and make it comfortable unlike anything else.
If you want to add some indoor gardens to your house, I recommend this book. It will give you ideas other than just sticking your plant in a pot and sitting it in the window!

It's okay... but save your money for a more thorough book.......2006-02-10
This book has been in my collection for a long while and I do reference it occassionally, but for the money a better book is Stephen Langely's "Theatre Management and Production in America." Also, "Producing Theatre" by Farber is good too. If you just need some really basic nuts-n-bolts, "The Stage Producer's Guide..." is not bad. I give it a 3 out of 5.
Good reference but something missing.......2004-09-13
It covers a lot of things that a neophyte producer might not think of but it doesn't cover a few things that I would've expected. One thing- it doesn't mention anything about forming an LLC (Limited Liability Company) in relationship to producing theater and there's almost no coverage of negotiating an "enhanced" production with an existing non-profit and commercial venture which I believe is the way that many new plays and musicals are developed and first presented.
Perhaps that's more sophisticated than the author intended but that's what I was hoping to get some insight into. I suppose I'll have to spend a lot of money on a lawyer instead!
