    Book Description

Antarctica -- a place of intensely profound coldness, solitude, and beauty. Welcome to a landmass 98 percent covered in ice, a world of howling winds and rogue waves, a place of summer's radiant light and winter's interstellar dark. This book pushes the freezer door open to reveal the continent's physical geography, its explorers, and its wildlife -- blizzards of krill, societies of seals, and cacophonies of penguins. Although the modern world threatens Antarctica's pristine environment, every member of the Antarctic Treaty has signed the Madrid Protocol for Environmental Protection. If any place can prove that many peoples of many nations can cooperate to save what remains of the wild Earth, that place will be Antarctica -- the coldest, windiest, highest, driest, least populated, and most remote corner of the world.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on Antarctica I've read.......2001-06-06

I've been fascinated with Antarctica for some time now, and I recently acquired several books on the continent after seeing the Boston Museum of Science Omni Show, "Shackleton's Antarctic Adventure." Of those books, this is clearly the best. It provides information on the geography and topography of Antarctica, a history of South Pole explorations, and information on the wildlife that populates the coasts. The pictures are far superior to any other book I've read. The writing is concise and easy to understand. It is a truly amazing book--the pictures alone are worth the cost.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome........2001-05-08

When I needed reference material on Antarctica for fact-checking my next suspense novel, I turned to this National Geographic classic. I expected the usual fare: extraordinary photography and a few pertinent bits of data. My expectations were exceeded.

The volume is divided into four sections. The first covers the physical geography, a litany of world record extremes. The coldest, driest, highest, windiest, least populated, etc. The next touches on the rich heritage of exploration and discovery there, incredible tales of bravery and hardship like those of Shackleton, Scott, and Mawson. You'll want to read more after this primer. The third section is on wildlife, very little of which is land-based. But the surrounding seas and sky are the most fertile and abundant on the planet. Penguins, seals, squid, krill, albatross, whales, algae, and more. The final section is devoted to Antarctica's environmental peril. Kim Heacox simply states the facts here, avoiding the overstatement and wolf-crying that cause such disservice to the environmental movement.

The biggest surprise was the quality of writing. My previous exposure to National Geographic was cursory perusal at the dentist's office. This one I read from cover to cover. The writing is simply wonderful. It was the mother lode of information for my next book, and will now rest on my coffee table, proudly displayed for years to come. --Christopher Bonn Jonnes, author of Wake Up Dead.

5 out of 5 stars Antarctica - The World Splendors.......2000-05-17

Kim Heacox shows in his book,Antarctic Value daily way of life in the Southern Antarctica. The writer recounts to us the history of discovery missions sent to this continent, which is characterized by its interesting style with avery wonderful and unique photos taken be these missions. These photos interpret the very nature of hard life over there on the Antarctica. All the pictures tell the story of human, animal, sea life in this continent in splendid and exciting manner. In addition, there are sufficient and helpful remarks about every thing pertinent to Antarctica. of course, the Antarctica enjoys many splendid characteristics in animal and sea life, which make it distinguished and unique in all over the world. There are also many detailed maps about the Antarctica. It is a minimum- size volume distinguished in its subject matter and photos, which are represented in simple and easy manner. N. B.: It should be noted that the success of an geographical/travel guide book depends on the sufficient number of photos available their quality and uniqueness.in this book we find that there are many photos covering all life aspects on this continent. The photos are of high quality and exciting shots which attract your attention to the extent that you would imagine that you would believe that the photos represents one book inside this book. In short this book is recommended for any one who likes to discover this ambiguous area and who can not visit it. Iconsider this book as a reference/easy guide for the wonderful southern Antarctica.

    5 out of 5 stars A visually stunning voyage.......2001-01-01

Have you ever dreamed about going on a scientific expedition to the North and South Poles? If you have, you will love "Destination: Polar Regions," by Jonathan Grupper. Published by the National Geographic Society, this book is directed towards younger readers. The combination of well-written text and beautiful full-color photographs make this book an outstanding choice.

The book focuses primarily on the many different animal species of the Arctic and Antarctic regions: ringed seals, caribou, ptarmigans, Adelie penguins, grizzly bears, Arctic sea stars, and more. The text gives interesting facts about each species. And the photographs capture many unforgettable images: a narwhal's tusk breaking the water, a mother polar bear cuddling with her cubs, a lone Arctic wolf standing atop a frosty hill, and more. Both beautiful and educational, this book impressed me greatly.

1 out of 5 stars An Official Waste of Money.......2007-07-07

I guess it depends what you are looking for in a guide. If it's information about sites than look elsewhere. Even the heavy sites of Paris only get a page or so. This book is heavy on background info and is aimed at the American tourist. This book did not help me at all on my trip.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great "Unofficial Guide".......2007-05-10

I have loved the Unofficial Guide series ever since I bought my first one for a trip to Disneyworld. I love the star ratings that are provided for different age groups. So many travel guides promote every attraction evenly, which is not much help when you are planning a trip for two adults and two grade schoolers. Using the Unofficial Guides, I list all the attractions that are 4 stars or more for the ages in my family, and work from there.

As for this particular UG-Paris book, it contained the usual high-quality UG advice. It was very useful as I decided on a hotel and decide how to structure my visit to the Louvre. I only wish I had been able to visit more of the parks that were recommended.

I bought a couple of travel guides for the trip, but this is the one that I packed in my suitcase. To me, that says a lot.

    1 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book.......2007-01-06

I just got back from Paris and I was tempted to burn this book when I got back. The shopping section was awful - we wasted an entire day in Paris based on their suggestions. For example, they tout the BVH department store. What we discovered when we got there? A Sears/Ikea combo. If you think that's worth your precious time, then go ahead and go.

If you need a good guidebook - get the Rick Steves one.

5 out of 5 stars THE guidebook to carry, IMHO.......2005-04-24

The Unofficial guide to Paris (UGP) is an excellent resource on the everyday logistics of getting around a major city. We purchased several books once we'd decided to visit France: of course, the Michelin Red guide, Frommer's Guide to France, Fodor's Paris CityPack, and then my husband brought this home as a "flyer" (we'd never used an Unofficial Guide before). Fodor's turned out to be not so useful - they included what I thought was a great Paris map but it basically disintegrated in 2 days into our trip. I immediately followed advice from the UGP and purchased a Plan de Paris - much easier to use and more detail. Frommer's Guide was very useful for finding hotels and restaurants in the Loire Valley (also part of our itinerary). But I didn't bring that book with me. The UGP provided incredible amounts of info on how to make this wonderful city very easy to navigate at reasonable prices and to enjoy with a minimum amount of tourist angst. We found the reviews for restaurants and hotels pretty much on the mark. Frommer's gave the Carte Visite an ever-so-brief mention and never mentioned (that I found) the Carte des Musees. Both these coupons saved us tons on time and money. My recommendation to future travelers to Paris would be to buy the UGP and the Michelin guide and then go to the library for other refs.

    5 out of 5 stars Helpful guidebook.......2004-01-03

This guidebook came in rather handy, as there are nifty charts that demonstrate how each place stacks up against the competition. It's rather helpful for travelers looking for the best experience possible.

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2004-05-01

This is the worst guide to DLRP. The author clearly hasn't done his homework and judging by the misinformation concerning the newer attractions must not have visited the place at all in the past ten years. His descriptions of the Indiana Jones ride (ie that it runs forwards and then backwards through a loop) and the Canal Boats (he says there is a guide cast member on board each boat)are just plain wrong. At the very least a purchaser should be able to expect such information to be factually correct. Do yourself a favour and give this one a miss.

2 out of 5 stars Very Very Out of Date and Oddly Negatively Opinionated.......2003-06-15

Having just returned from Disneyland Paris, I can tell you that the ONLY thing this book got right was the information about how to get on Space Mountain just as the park opens to avoid the lines.

This is old, outdated information. The author apparently has bias that he doesn't like thinks European intruding on his Disney experience. In MY experience, this is the most beautiful of the three Disneyland Parks (I have been to all three) and the unique rides are terrific. The food is actually quite good at some of the restaurants in the park (the author thought they were tasteless and overpriced).

More seriously -- this information is so old, it doesn't even include Disney Studios or the Village...the Village has now been there for years and the Studios have already celebrated their first year anniversary. What a great park that needs some mention somewhere.

Finally -- and most disconcertingly -- I wrote a 20-page updated information letter to the author after my visit almost a year ago -- no thank you, no response, as if he doesn't even care to incorporate changes.

I do NOT recommend this guide -- but if you go to one of the stores that has the book, take it with you to the coffee shop area and thumb through it for a basic (OUTDATED!) overview.

1 out of 5 stars Completely Out of Date!!!.......2003-05-19

Amazon and the publisher should be ashamed to still be selling this book! It has a "2nd edition" and a copyright from a couple of years ago, but that is a lie. This book is obviously a decade old information. It does not even mention the Studios park or the Disney Village area. It is completely out of date and utterly useless! First book I have every returned to Amazon. This book should be pulled from the shelves immediately! Don't make plans based on this book. Don't buy this book. Look for something up to date!

2 out of 5 stars Deja vu all over again.......2002-06-27

Ok. So I have no immediate plans to visit Disneyland
Paris, but, as a committed Disneyphile, I decided to
check this one out, to see if, if and when I DO
someday go to Paris, it would be worth a visit.
Now, I don't know for certain how identical DLP is to
Walt Disney World, but from the guidebook, you would
think they were virtual clones. While DLP has a few
unique rides (which get their own, original descriptions),
most of the ride descriptions, and the guest comments,
are lifted directly from the other guidebooks. Isn't it
AMAZING that a mother visiting DLP with her son had
EXACTLY the same experience on Dumbo as a mother who visited
WDW a decade or more ago? Much of the other information
(advice on visiting with kids, planning your day, understanding
traffic flows, meeting characters, etc.) is also reprinted,
virtually word for word, from the other Disney guides.

Of course there is some unique information. The hotels and
restaurants are described (the latter very briefly indeed -- 3-10 lines per restaurant, with no real description of the food, and only the most general indication of cost); you can apparently buy cigarettes in the park in Paris, and the few rides unique to DLP are described. (Interestingly, he doesn't seem to care for most of them.) He also gives basic information on getting to Paris, finding in-town hotels, and so on.

But most of it is just a tired rehash. Instead of giving us
a generic "DisneyX" book, why couldn't he focus on what makes
DLP different from the other parks? I'd guess that most readers, at least most American readers, have already been to either WDW or DL, and already know the basics. They are not going to be planning a trip to France JUST to take Junior to DLP as their first visit to a Disney park.
If Sehlinger REALLY doesn't want us to
go to DLP (he doesn't like most of the unique rides; the few rides for which he mentions differences from the U.S. version [for example, the French "Haunted Mansion"], get a poorer review here, and he thinks the food is lousy and overpriced) why not just say so, and save us the cost of the book.

OTOH, if you've never been to any Disney park, and never read a
Disney Unofficial Guidebook, this might be of some use.

          5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Educational.......2007-05-14

This book is wonderfully educational. It takes you back to the beginning of furniture and walks you through the centuries providing you with the intial inspiration through Modern design. Great pictures too.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of time and MONEY!.......2006-07-09

Based on the reviews of this book I decided to buy it! To my absolute shock, I dont understand who wrote these great reviews??? They were probably written by the publisher or author of this book.
What a waste of time and money. Being a designer myself, i ve got every possible book on interior design, and furniture styles that are out on the market. Based on the price of this book, and good reveiws, I figured it would be a great addition to my collection of books and references. Its poorly printed, very bad paper quality, no detailed shots of the furniture pieces, and not worth the price whatsoever. I mean if the publisher is charging this price, then the least they could do is print it on good paper and have clearer pictures.
I am extremely dissapointed and returning the book asap.
If u enjoy throwing your money away on a small book with poorly printed pictures(aside from the info, which is fine)then this is the book to buy . But if you are looking for details of furniture, including the background and history, and worth every penny, then i suggest you buy (Furniture: World Styles From Classical to Contemporary by Judith Miller )

          4 out of 5 stars Good Guide.......2006-02-08

I was not impressed when I received this book, with the quality of the paper or the overall presentation. I thought some of the photography left much to be desired quality-wise. However, it is quite a comprehensive book and I leaned on it considerably in my studies of furniture and design. So don't let me put you off. I just think that, with all the research and hard work involved, and considering the price, a better quality might have been forthcoming.

4 out of 5 stars Like Cliff Notes for Furniture!.......2005-08-10

This book has brief history lessons on furniture from the begining of time! It's a great reference when you need an answer about a design period- quick! A must for every Interior Designer!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference - Nice Job!.......2003-01-19

I found the book to be a good overall reference and extremely
useful in explaining period furniture to my design clients. I would like to have seen more coverage of Mid-century Modern, especially the work of Edward Wormley and DUNBAR.

Definitely worth the money - should be all designers reference

This book was very helpful as a new owner of an Exotic kitten, especially the sections on grooming and nail clipping. The illustrations were especially helpful and well done. For the price, a very good book.

5 out of 5 stars Another Good Reference Book on Old Electric Appliances..........2000-08-23

I was not surprised at the abundance of toasters, since the title leads one to expect that. In addition to toasters, it contains a good assortment of other common and not-so-common electrical appliances of yesteryear and is therefore valuable as an identification guide. Values probably have changed a lot since the publication date, but the reader can still obtain a good feel for relative values. I did find one toaster whose information contradicted Helen Greguire's book on the subject (Sunbeam Model T-20) but was able to forgive the author who has provided another good resource.

            4 out of 5 stars Great selection. Low-fi Pictures.......1997-12-08

Excellent selection of material, but a few too many toasters! However, I even found my waffle iron and egg cooker in here. The prices are a lot lower than my local dealers are asking.

I actually don't garden, but I purchased this book for my mother. She absolutely loves it. I think she has read it from cover to cover. I personally don't know what a book on gardening should contain, but my mother finds the book very informative.
