This book is a good beginning book on edible and medicinal plants of the west. The pictures are excellent and really help in identify species. The only complaint I have with this book is that it is missing some important edible plant sources, and it is also could be more detailed in methods of cooking and eating the plants.

INTRODUCTION
I know you're at least thinking about going to Europe, or you wouldn't be reading this book. Every year thousands of people just like you head to Europe for the first time, and I'd guess all of them want the best trip they can get for the money. This book is intended to help someone taking one of those trips see Europe as cheaply and as enjoyably as possible. The first time I traveled to Europe I just picked up and went, and had to learn the hard way. That trip was a wonderful experience, but it would have been much easier, and certainly less expensive, if someone who had been there before had given me his or her advice. Now, several years and much European travel later, this book contains the advice I give to friends before their first trip.
The very first and most important piece of advice I can give you is one word: GO! If you have the time, and can find the money somewhere, anywhere, just GO! You will not regret it, I promise you. When you walk into St Peter's in Rome and look down a central aisle longer than two football fields, over the spot where Charlemagne was crowned twelve centuries ago, and then give a glance to the right and see Michelangelo's Pietá, you will not regret going. When you sit on a beach in the Greek Islands and watch the sun set into the Aegean Sea, and listen to the others on that beach laughing and chatting in six languages as the ouzo and wine get passed around, you will not regret the time and money it took to get there. When you wake up in Paris and have a choice between going to the Eiffel Tower, or the Louvre, or Versailles, or Notre Dame, or the Cathedral at Chartres, or a dozen other wonders only a walk or a train ride away, your trip will seem very cheap indeed. That's not to say that you shouldn't try to go as inexpensively as possible; in fact, this book is written in large part to help you do just that. But later in life, when you look back and ask yourself whether it was worth it to go when you did, I promise you the answer will be "Yes." If you have the time and the money, do it. If you have the time, but think you don't have the money, keep reading, and maybe I can show you that Europe for a few weeks, or for a summer, can be a lot cheaper than you think.
And, if the whole process of going seems like too much of a bother, too much planning and time, remember the following: by spending a summer in Europe you will visit countries that are both much older and very different from your own, and gain a new perspective on your own country as a result. You will meet people who happily live lives very different from your own. And you will see some of the greatest creations of the human mind and spirit: legendary wonders of art and architecture that form a large part of the collective heritage of the human race. That's why you're going to Europe, not to hunt for the cheapest hostel or the best rate of exchange. Remember this during all the dry talk about money and packs and all that practical stuff.

This book covers everything, it is the kind of book you read before going to Europe for your 10th time. This book has so much information it helps every kind of traveler. It's just a great read. Buy this book before you leave, and treat it like your bible.

This doesn't have as much practical how-to info. as Rick Steves' Backdoor book. But it has tons of details about different countries & cities. I think those two books together will really help me on my first trip to Europe this fall.

This book is great to help you plan your trip before you've even bought your tickets. It gives great tips and advise on packing and traveling. It doesn't discuss different countries...you'll need to get a "Let's Go" type of book for that. This book is strictly for preparation for people on a budget.
Required for First Time Travelers to Europe..........2005-05-03
If you have never been to Europe and are thinking of traveling there independently (or, perhaps even with a tour, although tour guides tend to dislike "educated" tourists...) you NEED this book! I only wish I had such a book to guide me when I began traveling many years ago.
As the book itself states, it is NOT a guidebook for sites to see, lodging, specific costs, etc. What it DOES do (and rather well...) is outline the skills and tools you need to travel successfully--and not just in Europe, as the skills Mr. Casablanca relates are applicable in any travel situation.
Being a well-traveled person myself, anytime someone asks me how I "do it", or if I hear of someone planning a trip to Europe for the first time, I ask them if they have read this book. If not, I tell them it is REQUIRED reading if you want your independent trip to go smoothly. Many of the tips and ideas laid-out in the book I had to learn by experience--not always a joyful thing when traveling. While I value experience in travel, if you can save yourself a few headaches, why not??
As I mentioned eariler, the skills outlined in this book are fully transferable across continents and local regions. The book gives you practical ways of dealing with almost any situation you will encounter--anywhere in the world. The information given is well-researched, easy to follow, and never goes out of style...it's always useful.
Great book for your trip to Europe.......2004-03-28
What I like best about the Rough Guides is that they give critical reviews. They will point out the tourist traps and will give negative reviews. I find that Frommer's and Fodor's rarely point out the negatives to a particular... The rough guide is very critical and is a great balance to these other guides.
If you aren't interested in "roughing" it and staying in lower priced hotels.. the guides are still very useful in rating attractions, and areas in which to stay... but you will need another book to look at more moderate and luxury hotels.
I would definitely read this book before going to Europe.

Fantastic book.......2005-03-02
Amazing, it was just amazing! I had never read anything like this before. I was surprised with the 22 men surviving on Elephant Island and it was surprising because this happened like a 100 years ago. Monica Kulling is a very fantastic writer. John Edens is a fantastic illustrator. I hope that I could read more of the Shackleton series and I highly recommend it to all kids.
A well-done introduction to the Endurance epic.......2000-04-11
This book is a very well-written and illustrated introduction to the epic story of Sir Ernest Shackleton and the crew of the Endurance in their struggle to survive the loss of their ship in the ice. If you know a child who feels put-upon because they don't have the latest model gaming system or the right type of monsters in their card decks, get them to read this, and perhaps it will prove a useful antidote to the ennervating softness of "modern" civilization.

Most chapters are about general information about how to keep your dog (training, food, keeping, health etc.). Very useful information in this regard. I was a bit disappointed not to find more specific reading about the Belgian Tervuren, fairly general comments only.

I was a bit disappointed with this book, since I was after detailed information about Belgian Tervurens. First chapters had information (fairly general) about the dogs, the rest (main bit) was just info about dogs in general. Wouldn't recommend it if you are after detailed info for Belgians.

This book is one of the most comprehensive works on the Belgian Shepherd breeds/varieties yet written. Every Belgian owner should have it on their bookshelf. As a Belgian Sheepdog fancier of 25+ years, and possessor of several breed-related books, I find the information found in this book invaluable and recommend it to all my puppy buyers.

This book IS the best book on Belgians that I've found. With information on raising, training, showing, grooming, and breeding. Great pictures and information on all four "varieties" Sheepdog, Malinois, Tervuren and Laekenois. Don't miss out on this excellent book!

I really enjoyed viewing The "John Deere Model B Photo Archive." Growing up with this model of tractor I found out two things. First, the Model B was a very reliable machine and second, this machine was not just a tractor, but a piece of family history for many families across America. The photos in this selection were of very high quality and were very helpful in the restoration of my grandfathersmodel B which has been on our farm since it was bought new in 1950.I would recommend this selection to any John Deere fan, or anyone who is interested in some of our early farm machinery

Wonderful, informative book.......1999-07-29
I checked out several books from the library to complete my research on a butterfly garden for my backyard. This one book was the best, most informative, easiest instructions I found. I had a small area to work with, and 2 years later my butterfly garden is a beautiful sight to behold, and my personal treasure to work in and with. It's design follows Mr. Mikula's basic instructions, and to date we have had several different types of butterflies visit our garden. What a joy. Thank you, Mr. Mikula!!
Beautiful book but misleading title.......1999-02-01
The photos are superb and the text interesting; if the title were "Common Garden Butterflies of the United States" I'd give it 5 stars. The existing title is very misleading, however. Only the most common U.S. butterflies are included and coverage of Canada is neglible.

Its the only play i read in the book. It was an interesting read. The dialect is sometimes hard to understand, only a few words though.
The play is fast moving and interesting. The scandalous Eben-???(dont want to ruin it for you) relationship is unexpected and dramatic. Perhaps too dramatic, in a rome and juliet complex.

Each of the three plays in this volume are beautiful in their own way, with a poignant message that you'll be the better for hearing. O'Neill's genius is breathtaking and sometimes I wonder how he does it. Out of all his plays, there's not a stinker in the bunch.

Three great and rarely performed plays by Eugene O'Neill.......1998-11-18
One of these three great plays by Eugene O'Neill is Strange Interlude which was written in 1923 and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1928 when it originally ran on Broadway. Its running time is over four hours and it is usually performed with a dinner break. It is a family chronicle, of sorts, following the life of Nina Leeds and her family in a small university town in New England - from her early days as a young woman mourning the loss of her ideal lover during WWI, through her middle age years. It is the story of a family's secret and their determination to keep this secret unknown by others, and sometimes even to themselves. The play's most unusual quality, though, is found in the words that each character speaks. Not only do they converse with each other using naturalistic dialogue, but they also voice their subtext, which is unheard by the other characters in the play, but is heard by the audience. This device brings to the surface the secret life that each character in the play carries with them but is not willing to reveal to others. It creates, in the audience, as if it were another character in the play, a "sharer" of these stage characters' secrets. Through it all we view the lives of these characters with a fondness, and we root for them. Perhaps we root for them because we know, very much, why they are doing the things they do to each other.
The two other plays are well worth the experience of reading and/or seeing on stage. Mourning Becomes Electra, based on the Greek Electra myth, is especially wonderful. Its set in post civil war america and like Strange Interlude its length makes it a rare theatre treat to see performed on stage.
