Customer Reviews:
help I want to move to London. .......2007-02-06
This book is fantastic if you have decided to move to London on a whim and lack the support structure of either a company or study abroad program to help you through the transition. It gives you all the details about how to go about putting together a life having stepped off a plane with only a suitcase, finding a place to sleep immediately and in the long term, a job, etc. It also allowed me to do a lot of the research and legwork before I arrived for example pick a cellphone company and plan when I didn't even know which cellphone companies there were in the U.K. prior to reading it. It really IS the London Bible.
Aimed at young singles, but a fun read for anyone moving to London.......2006-08-18
This is a well written, informative and funny guide to London, but we felt it was aimed at a younger demographic (we are in our early 30s, with a family). There is lots of information on where to eat, shop and drink, but not as much practical info as some other books. But the descriptions of neighbourhoods were great, and much more in depth and seemingly of a Londoner's prospective than some of the more dry guides. The fact that it is written by Canadians was nice too, they mentioned some things that only people coming from North Amerca would care wbout, the UK writers don't have the same perspective on space for example!
I would highly recommend this for young singles, but not as much for older professionals or families, because of the emphasis on nightlife, etc. But it is still an excellent supplement to another relocating guide.
Definitely worthless for a family planning to relocate.......2005-07-15
As noted by some of the other reviewers, this book is not geared for anyone with a family who's planning to relocate to London, but instead for the 20-something, single, partying crowd.
For instance, the Education chapter concentrates on college or continuing education for adults, without nary a mention on schools for children. Likewise, the neighbourhood descriptions don't even try to mention what they are like for families, instead concentrating in describing their restaurants, pubs and other nightlife options.
Several of the neighbourhoods are described as "expensive" or "posh", and the authors don't shy in saying that "you probably will not afford to live there". Why then waste valuable book space on them??? They should instead have concentrated on describing those areas where normal people (i.e. non-millionaires) will actually end up living!!!
It seems like this book is geared for those looking to have a "Sex In The City" lifestyle. Not that there's anything wrong with it, but I found its title to be deceiving. After all, when you dare to call your book a "Bible" to something you should go to great lenghts to make sure it is as inclusive as possible. I definitely found it to be a waste of money; as a matter of fact, this was the first book I purchased at Amazon that I ever felt compelled to return (and I've purchased over 200 books here).
For those adults who are planning a move to London (married or not, with children or childless) I recommend "Living and Working in Britain, Fifth Edition : A Survival Handbook", by David Hampshire. It is full of information that actually helps in planning such a move and allows you to know how to settle in London or anywhere else in Britain.
This book really helped me to find my feet in London!.......2005-02-15
I arrived in London six months ago and to say that I was overwhelmed at first was an understatement. Luckily, during my first week at a hostel in Earls Court, a fellow novice to London recommended The London Bible to me. This guide seemed to be aimed directly at me, at 26 year old who wanted to settle in London and really make the most of my time here.
I had purchased one of the usual backpacker guides before arriving, but what I really needed was information on settling in London, not just passing through.
The London Bible begins with THE BASICS, chapters that concisely and clearly explain all you need to know about 1) ACCOMMODATION (how letting agencies work, types of properties, postcode areas, council tax, bills, bond etc...) 2) RECRUITMENT AND MONEY (jobs, agencies, C.V.s, salaries, tax, how to open a bank account etc...) 3) TRANSPORT (how to navigate the tube!, fares, travelcards, buses, taxis etc...) 4) HEALTH (how to sign up with a doctor, how the NHS works, prescriptions, dentists etc...) 5) EDUCATION (universities, colleges, financial support, overseas students, language schools etc...) 6) COMMUNICATIONS AND MEDIA (getting a telephone & cell phone, newspapers, TV and the dreaded TV license etc...) 7) SHOPPING (where, what, sizes, budget shopping, cheap haircuts etc...) and then a few chapters on some other basics. I was very, very pleased with these sections as I just wanted to know easily how to do things. It's tough arriving in London - you have no idea where to start just to get a doctor. But this book says in plain and simple terms exactly what you should do. About a third of the book is devoted to all of this, yet it isn't rambling. Just a bit of background and then what to do to sort yourself out. Perfect. Exactly what I needed.
The second section of the book is...ENTERTAINMENT! Arriving in London was daunting - with so many clubs, bars, and places to go out I had no idea where to start at first. Luckily the book told me about the best clubs to try, where to go to see bands/theatre/galleries/soccer etc... I'm enamored with all the history of London. Now I know where to go to drink in Charles Dickens' favourite pub (and where his favourite seat was!), I know which underground club has seen Muddy Waters, the Rolling Stones, the Sex Pistols, and the White Stripes all grace the stage and now hosts all manner of up-and-coming bands.
The third section of the book, AREAS, was extremely helpful when I started looking for somewhere to live after the youth hostel. London is massive. Looking at the listings for flatshares I had no idea what was a good or bad area and the book was very helpful with this. It gives an overview of the major areas and describes the differences (ie. Hoxton is trendy and bohemian, the City is dead at the weekends, and Hampstead is posh and leafy). Reading through the Areas chapters I was able to decide which neighborhoods I wanted to live in and then center my flatshare searches to those places. The added bonus of having the best pubs, bars, and restaurants per area was great.
This book really helped me to settle in easily, move to a cool flatshare in a neighborhood that I love, get a job in the media thanks to the agency listing, and to discover some fantastic bars and clubs.
I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone trying to settle into London.
Very useful.......2005-02-14
I'd recommend this book to anyone who's going to London or the UK to work. I went over on a Working Holiday Visa with no idea of where I wanted to live or how to even start looking for work, but when I found this book, it made life heaps easier. The guide is written by two young writers in a really witty, funny style.
It helped me find a job as a secretary in the city and an apartment living with a couple of cool English girls, so if you're planning on moving to London to experience the culture or lifestyle, this is a great book. They have a huge section on nightlife as well as all the practical info like looking for a job, paying tax, the price of transport and all that necessary info. Highly recommended.

Don't believe the hype........2006-02-12
Some crappy sketches, computer renderings, brief product descriptions and wire-frame images next to pictures of the actual products (as if this gives any insight into how the design was developed). This book is lacking in content and substance, don't waste your money.
the future of design.......2002-03-06
fuseproject and Yves Behar are showing the future of industrial design. fuseroject's profound and generous ideas come accross in this book: from the early concept sketches, to the computer renderings and the final products.
can't wait for their next book and projects.

Many Pleasures Behind Severe Title.......2005-12-18
Designed landscapes are usually and broadly described as being either English or French gardens. The English sort seeks to group trees, foliage and flowering plants as if growing randomly without a perceived design, usually favoring twists and turns in the landscape, avoiding large vistas, favoring more intimate perspectives, rejoicing in cul-de-sacs, easily adaptable to any surroundings. Of course, it is all neatly crafted, art to conceal art. A French garden, rejoices in design, favors focus and symmetry, celebrates the subjugation of nature to the landscaper's master plan, opens up, indeed enhances vistas, expands the horizon. It is also dynamically related to the structure with which it is associated (unless it is a stand-alone park, of course). Such close interdependence is absent in English gardens, hence the latter's pliability and popularity.
French celebration of design in gardening could not have remained immune to the revolution in plastic arts centered in Paris until the start of World War II. Thus Ms. Imbert's marvelous book which analyzes through renderings, photographs and text the impact of cubism in particular but modern art in general in French garden design during the first part of the twentieth century through the thirties. The works of Gabriel Guevrekian, Le Corbusier, André Lurçat, Pierre-Emile Legrain among others are analyzed in great detail, establishing the profound links between garden design, the structure it supported, and the "outside" aesthetic which nurtured both architecture and landscaping. Thus it is instructive to notice in the excellent illustrations, among other things, how, when the perspective is high, garden paths, flower beds, etc. mimic observable planes in, for example, cubist painting. That it worked so well is one of the miracles of modern art; that it has remained so unheralded outside France was one of the casualties of WWII as well as America's marked preference for English gardens and general distaste for the architecturally adventuresome. Of course, to influence architecture and landscaping, art must be identifiably formal. When it comes to gardening, Abstract Impressionism brings to mind weeds.
The book excels in bringing all strands together in meticulous order and clear detail. The photographs, given their vintage almost exclusively black and white, are well reproduced, make their respective points, and provide much pleasure in viewing. Color helps create texture, so history has denied us full appreciation of the beauties discussed. However, there's a short section of color plates at the end, of either designs, watercolors or current photographs of some of the items discussed. Pity there is not more color material available.
Dorothée Imbert's work is palpably a labor of love even if it also started as a graduate thesis for UC at Berkeley. It is thoroughly annotated, and not at all pedantic.

Cover is misleading.......1999-01-05
I was browsing the interior decoration section and came across this book. Misled by the cover, I bought it. It is a coffee table book that shows lots of palaces, mostly exteriors. Not a lot of domestic interior photos, and what there are would not interest someone searching for an interior decoration book.

Book Description
This important new sourcebook is the first publication in simultaneous Italian and English translation of the important 1463 dance treatise "On the Practice or Art of Dancing" by Guglielmo Ebreo--William the Jew--dancing master at the most influential courts in Renaissance Italy. It includes
choreographies and music for thirty-six dances, a theory of the dance (still valid today), and Guglielmo's first-hand account of the festivities in which he took part. Sparti has provided an extensive introduction, appendices containing significant theoretical, musical, and choreographic additions
from a later copy, a bibliography, biographical notes, illustrations, and a glossary.
Customer Reviews:
Very informative intro and translation of 15th C. manuscript.......1998-08-31
Anyone who is interested in reconstructing 15-16th Century Italian dance will find this book very practical, and I recommend it very highly indeed. A great deal of effort has been put into the introductory chapters which describe not only the origins and history of the document itself but also a great deal about the life of its author Guglielmo Ebreo (William the Jew, later known as Giovanni Ambrosio). These chapters provide a useful insight into upper class life of the period. The translation itself is presented in the most practical possible fashion, with the original Italian and corresponding English translation on facing pages. This makes it possible for an English-speaking reconstructor to rely mainly on the English text while still having the option of going back to the original words if clarification or a different interpretation might be possible. The music has been converted to modern notation, which makes it accessible to all musicians rather than restricting it to the scholarly minority. For dancers, this is good news. *** If you're into Renaissance dance, buy this book! ***

Book Description
Norman von Nida - The "Von" - is a national treasure, Australia's last remaining link to a glorious era in sport which stretches back to the late 1920s.The creation of this book has been a remarkable collaboration between eighty-five-year old Norman von Nida and the thirty-year-old Ben Robertson. Ben is a journalist by training and aspired to be a book writer. Norman cannot write because of his blindness yet wanted his life story told in his own words. The process of creating this book required an unusual intimacy and trust. Norman would tell Ben his stories in his inimitable yardspinning style and Ben would then write them, retaining the von Nida nuances. This process has produced a book of great freshness and character which is also easy to read. It. s like having a series of good yarns with Norman von Nida.Norman von Nida is a legend of Australian golf. He is one of only a handful of players alive in the world today who locked horns with golfing legends such as Walter Hagen, Bobby Jones, Henry Cotton, Gene Sarazen and Ben Hogan. He counts among his friends the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Peter Thomson, all of whom have contributed generous forewords. The pathfinding legacy he has provided for Australian golfers is without peer. He is to Australian golf what Donald Bradman is to Australian cricket.Ben Robertson has done Norman von Nida and the Australian public a great service by bringing "The Von's" story to life.
