Book Description

A pocket guide to identifying native ferns that grow in the U.S. Midwest and Northeast, and eastern Canada. Like other plant guides in the "Finders" series, "Fern Finder" is a dichotomous key, which leads the user step-by-step through a series of choices to the species being identified. Heavily illustrated with line drawings.

Easy to cary and use, great for the novice or beginner interested in fern identification.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of info in a graphic format.......2003-06-02

This is a great book in a small package. Graphic icons convey useful information that is understandable at a glance. Excellent illlustrations. Good for beginner or intermediate fern student. I use it as a supplement to text-heavy fern guides.

5 out of 5 stars Compact and Economical Guide to Ferns.......2002-08-03

Among flowering plants, the flowers are often a crucial feature in identifying them. But then there are non-flowering plants, such as the Pteridiophytes, which include ferns. Those who know a lot about flowering plants can still be at a loss when it comes to identifying ferns. Some of the best books about wildflowers feature colorful pictures, and those can be a major aid to identification. But when it comes to ferns, with their tinier reproductive structures that are less showy than all but the smallest flowers, pictures alone are much less of a vital key to identification. Instead, one needs to observe details like clumped or scattered growth patterns, scaly or smooth stipes (the stems of fern fronds), and arrangement and shape of the sori (clusters of spore-bearing parts). This small but useful book is an excellent introduction to these and other features important in fern identification. Once you learn them, the book provides a key for sorting out what fern one is observing, using those features. This book best covers the ferns of the eastern and central U.S. and Canada. As shown on this site, there is also a Pacific Coast version of this book for those observing and hoping to identify ferns there.

4 out of 5 stars The Hometown Guide.......2006-10-01

The Lonely Planet city guide to "Melbourne" was put together by Simone Egger and David McClymont. The guide I am reviewing is the 5th edition of the guide, so please take note that a 6th edition will be out soon, and it is almost always best to go with the latest edition of a travel guide.

I may update my review after my trip, but from my first reading of the guide, I found it to be fairly comprehensive. It covers the city as well as some things to do in the immediately surrounding region. There are sections which cover the culture (`City Life', `Arts',' Food', `History'), the area (`Neighbourhoods'), and most importantly for the traveler, things to do (`Eating', `Drinking', `Sleeping', `Walking Tours', `Entertainment', `Sports, Health, & Fitness', `Shopping', and `Excursions').

I found this guide to be very helpful in my planning, and only found a couple areas where it wasn't accurate. The first was in hotel costs, and that is undoubtedly due to the fact that I am going to be there during a holiday. The guide is also from 2004, so there would undoubtedly be changes each year anyway. The other area where they might want to update is for getting a visa. Tourist visas for many countries can now be applied for online, but they do not mention that. I feel that one of the most useful sections of this book will probably turn out to be the `Directory' section, which covers a wide range of topics from transportation, money exchange, embassies, tipping, tourist information, and much more.

As the city guide for the city in which Lonely Planet is based, my expectations were very high, and so far they have been met for the most part. As I indicated earlier, I may come back and edit this review after my trip, but for pre-planning, these is easily a four star reference. However, I do see that the 6th edition is due out in October of this year, so if possible I would suggest waiting for the more up-to-date version of the guide.

4 out of 5 stars Indespensible for Melbourne........2000-05-14

I spent several months In Melbourne the second half of 1999. It proved worth its price alone for the detailed maps which I studied constantly my first weeks there to figure out Lonsdale Street from Bourke Street and which tram goes where. It covers the high lights of everything to see and do in this wonderous city in a very compact size. While the Lonely Planet guide to Australia is useful as well, this is a must have if you plan to spent any amount of time in Melbourne. Looking back now, I wish I had taken the time to visit more of the suggested places in this guidebook.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for great city.......2000-05-03

This pocket sized book followed me everywhere when I enjoyed Melbourne and its surroundings for a couple of months of 1999. The extensive map section helps you navigate without problems. Its restaurant guide is excellent, the prices and the foods are exactly as described. If you are a student or budget traveller you will find your money back with this book in no time. All events (Melbourne has got heaps of that! ) are listed with tips and details, accurate and witty. Also, you find everything you need to get to Anglesea, Torquay and Phillip Island for the surf or for the splendid nature. It's got the lots for Melbourne - simply go there with it and enjoy!

I go to Melbourne fairly regularly for business (from Sydney). I am looking for some interesting things to do and this book meets that need. It is comprehensive, and in a plus for Lonely Planet, the maps are good. Real street maps, not out of scale, sketch maps.

I am taking the family there for a holiday soon and this book will be invaluable.

4 out of 5 stars Clear but doesn't oversimplify ..........2005-03-09

Can I recommend this book too many times?. I don't think so. In my opinion, Lowe's book is a great way to start studying history, or even to learn more if you have already started.

The reasons for that statement are many. "Mastering Modern World History" is clear but doesn't oversimplify the events it talks about. It isn't long, but it gives you a brief summary of the subjects under study and the motivation to investigate more. Also, I would like to point out that the author includes at the end of each chapter some interesting questions that are eerily similar to those a teacher might ask in an exam. If you are a student, don't panic: take advantage of this opportunity :)

"Mastering Modern World History" has many interesting illustrations, and also quite a few useful maps. This third edition includes relatively new historical events, for example the collapse of communism. All the same, I wish I could have the 4th edition, that unfortunately hasn't been published yet, because many relevant things have happened since 1997 and I would like to read about them here. That is the only reason I give this book 4 stars instead of 5.

To sum up, I think this is a wonderful book, and as such a great gift to yourself and others. Lowe manages to write clearly about subjects that are not simple, and surprisingly enough for those who aren't fond of history books, he also happens to write quite well. What else can I say?. Strongly recommended!.

5 out of 5 stars The best modern history book.......2002-04-15

I would give this book 10 stars if it were possible, this is the best modern history book I have read so far. It's the perfect book for people who hated history at school and now find it difficult to understand modern world affairs. The author writes in a concise, to-the-point, clear way providing simple explanations to the most important events which took place during the 20th century: the two World Wars, Vietnam War, Cold War, Communism, Fascism, Decolonization, Middle-East, United Nations, etc. He also provides the reader with interesting questions, hyphotesis, excerpts, and pictures which make the reader "participate" in an original kind of way. If you are having trouble watching the news daily because you never quite understand the basis of current affairs and politics, this book will provide you with the necessary insight to better understand the world today.

Carouschka's Tickets is at once a museum of objects, a record of movement, a catalog of graphic form and typography, and a concentrated experience of travel. Hundreds of plane tickets, train tickets, airline baggage tags, bus transfers, taxicab receipts, parking permits, and other bits of travel ephemera from 70 countries are displayed against rich fields of color. Travelers' thoughts and overheard comments are translated and interspersed between the tickets alongside their original-language versions, comments that range from the banal ("tea?") to the personal ("his wife is bound to notice something soon") to the profound ("alas, my spirit, your wanderings have been my home in this life"). This beautifully designed, printed, and bound volume makes real not only the feelings of travel but also of life itself, in subtle, quiet, and brilliant ways. With each page, the book is more an art object, rather than a gathering of art objects, a moving narrative masquerading as a catalog of tickets. --Juliette Cezzar

                    Book Description

"Carouschka's Tickets" is a design object, an artist's book, and a catalogue of the ultimate emphemera of 30 years worth of travel. It reproduces over 1600 tickets from international airlines to intracity buses collected by the Swedish designer and architect Carouschka Strejffert which together present a portrait of contemporary migration: of people across borders, and of commuters across town, while at the same time celebrating the graphic design of travel. Remarkably designed in a large-format with French folds, this book is printed beautifully, accurately conveying the feel and texture of each ticket. "Carouschka's Ticket" is a singular project by a unique artist that speaks to the overwhelming prevelance of travel in our world, and the signifying power of graphic design in contemporary culture.

                    1600 color.

This book, i felt is the best book for the person thinking of getting an APBT it outlines proper care and grooming of these dogs and the fulfillment that can be achieved by taking proper care of your wonderful pets, my only problem was that it didnt outline the temperaments that some of these dogs posess and dangers associated with a dangerous untrained animal. Jacqueline O' Neil did an otherwise excellent job.

This authoritative book provides the first comprehensive coverage of the popular and varied genus Buddleja. Buddlejas are wonderful garden plants whose tolerance of drought, many soil conditions, and common pests ensures them a place in every garden. Highly attractive to butterflies, moths, and other insects, the flowers of buddlejas come in a huge range of shapes and colors. This book provides valuable clarification of the confusion over the naming of Buddleja species and hybrids, details the diversity of the genus, and introduces gardeners to the spectacular quality of the flowers. It is ideal for collectors and enthusiasts, as well as wildlife and natural-style gardeners.

                            Book Description

The Bible and the Qur`ân share a common layer of discourse based on stories and legends associated with certain paradigmatic characters like Noah, Abraham, and Moses. Yet most biblical scholars are unfamiliar with the rich contents of Islamicate scriptural lore. The nine essays in the present volume, all from scholars who center their research on the intersections of Jewish, Christian, and Islamic literary traditions, explore various aspects of the textual and behavioral connections discernible among these three major Near Eastern religious communities. The book will appeal to students and scholars of Bible and biblical lore, particularly in diverse exegetical contexts; Biblicists interested in the reception history of Bible within the Islamicate cultural sphere; specialists in ancient and medieval Jewish literary history and folklore; scholars of eastern Christian history and literature; Islamicists with an interest in the Jewish and/or Christian textual and ex! egetical elements visible in early and medieval Islam. Contributors include Fred Astren, Reuven Firestone, Sidney H. Griffith, Brian M. Hauglid, Kathryn Kueny, Jane Dammen McAuliffe, Gordon D. Newby, John C. Reeves, Vernon K. Robbins, and Brannon M. Wheeler.

"There are moments in the history of theatre when stagecraft takes a new turn. I like to think that this happened for the American musical last week, when Tony Kushner's Caroline, or Change (at the Public), a collaboration with composer Jeanine Tesori and the director George C. Wolfe, bushwhacked a path beyond the narrative end of the deconstructed, overfreighted musicals of the past thirty years."-John Lahr, The New Yorker

Louisiana, 1963: A nation reeling from the burgeoning Civil Rights Movement and the Kennedy assassination. Caroline, a black maid, and Noah, the son of the Jewish family she works for, struggle to find an identity for their friendship. Through their intimate story, this beautiful new musical portrays the changing rhythms of a nation. Tony Kushner and composer Jeanine Tesori have created a story that addresses contemporary questions of culture, community, race and class through the lens and musical pulse of the 1960s.

Tony Kushner is best known for the two-part masterwork, Angels in America, recently produced by HBO as a six-hour television event, directed by Mike Nichols to universal acclaim. His other plays include Homebody/Kabul, A Bright Room Called Day and Slavs!; as well as adaptations of Corneille's The Illusion, Ansky's The Dybbuk, Brecht's The Good Person of Szechuan and Goethe's Stella. Current projects include: Henry Box Brown or The Mirror of Slavery and St. Cecilia or The Power of Music. He recently collaborated with Maurice Sendak on an American version of the children's opera, Brundibar. He grew up in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and he lives in New York.

Jeanine Tesori wrote the score for Thoroughly Modern Millie, which won the 2002 Tony and Drama Desk Awards for Best Musical and the multiple-award-winning Violet.

Most people face challenging personal issues - in jobs, relationships, finances, and health. Traditional ways of living, working, and relating to one another and the environment often don't seem to work well, yet there are few effective models for change. Shakti Gawain shares the ideas and perspectives that have been the most helpful to her; guides readers in healing physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wounds; provides tools for dealing with difficult situations; and proposes that the solutions to personal and planetary crises are within each human being.

Ms. Gawain offers the open-minded reader some interesting and provocative, if a bit vague, ideas for approaching the journey of life in a healthy and balanced way. She addresses the need of every individual to generate an equilibrium among the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual components of his life. The grammar contained in this book is, however, dreadful and offensive. As a lover of the English language, I found the random substitution of the third person plural pronoun for the third person singular after such terms as someone and everyone, the improper use of the subjective who in place of the objective whom, and the continual use of contractions and various other colloquialisms to be rather distracting. While psychotherapy often emphasizes the building of a strong sense of self, Buddhism on the Couch challenges this approach. Drawing from the core Buddhist concept of non-self, it features specific instruction and includes helpful exercises that show readers the way to transcend the limitations of one's identity. For 2,500 years Buddhism has developed an understanding of how the mind clings to false perceptions and tries to control reality. Buddhism on the Couch combines psychoanalysis with the Buddhist response to these mental misunderstandings. In doing so it turns Buddhism's Four Noble Truths, Eightfold Path, and Five Skandhas into useful therapeutic tools. Buddhism on the Couch explores the relevance of Buddhist teachings and psychology to everyday experience and shows how letting go of the attachment to self opens people to full engagement with life and with others.

Caroline Brazier, (wife of author David Brazier) psychotherapist experienced in Pure Land, Theravada, & Zen provides basic Buddhist psychology in great detail with many charts/models of various processes, p. ix: "Presenting the teachings as a psychology creates the possibility that the understanding Buddhism offers can be extended to those who might not otherwise engage with the religious aspects of the faith." She rightly points out that p. xiv: "Many of the misconceptions that have arisen in Western Buddhism have come out of poor translations of terms. Even when a word is accurately translated, it is easy to forget that nuances of the original may be lost, or new meanings may be construed that are not faithful to the original term. The use of Sanskrit is a reminder to be cautious in these matters. With the key terms we are using, it is important to find the right meanings." However, she uses a great many Sanskrit words that don't appear to be ambiguous. She says, p. 9: "Translating these words makes for easier reading but ultimately creates confusion since equivalent Western terminology never fully covers the meaning of the original & often carries its own set of associations, which may be wholly inappropriate to the real meaning of the term," but over usage creates confusion too, even having a Glossary. Overall, she states that p. 35: "Buddhist psychology is a psychology of addiction; it is also a psychology of encounter." I see parallels between psychodrama & role playing (in her fine chapter 12, "Experiment and Encounter") on one hand & Eric Berne's "The Games People Play" & Alice Miller's "Drama of the Gifted Child" on the other. Chapter 13, "Working with Other" uses family stories (p. 16: "Stories are often more a product of the times in which they are told than of the original incident that gave rise to them") & Morita Therapy. She gives an interesting analysis of dependent origination vs. interdependent co-arising or Interbeing, reminiscent of Jung's synchronicity.

She notes p. 151: "The world you see is substantially a function of your mentality. Our viewing is selective & colored. Some things you distort by misinterpretation, some by imagination, & some by selectivity of view;" which she might apply herself. Per the story of Naropa at the gate of Nalanda University, there's a great difference between understanding words & understanding meaning. Despite his education & erudition, Naropa left the university undergoing extreme hardship to learn meaning from Tilopa. For example, Brazier's description of self is too elementary; per Chögyam Trungpa's "The Sanity We Are Born With-a Buddhist Approach to Psychology," "The only material we have is ego. There is no other way to spirituality." This book is overly wordy, structured, & IMHO expressionistic. The author appears to project a lot-reading too much into things. Her approach could be more scientific, balanced, empirical, & realistic, except for chapters 12 & 13 which describe her therapeutic processes (which seem Western not Buddhist to me). The book could use some practical aspects of actual life in Buddhist countries, a more balanced/less extreme perspective, & more consistency so as not to detract from confidence in her (unsupported) statements (e.g. about dependent arising). While I personally approve, for example, of "engaged Buddhism" per se (see Karma Lekshe Tsomo's anthologies), if you criticize something as not coming directly from the Buddha, you lay yourself open to the same criticism.

5 out of 5 stars Different explanation of Four Noble Truth, ..,Five Skandhas.......2004-03-29

This book explores not only a very deep (linguistic and interpolation) meaning behind Four Noble Truth, The Six Senses, Five Skandhas, etc, other than the usual (common) explanation/translation but also provides different insights that helps building systematic understanding of the mind as described in Buddhist teachings.

By reading this, i have better intellectual understanding and can use some mental model to contemplate during meditation. It really helps to be really mindful, although i fail all the times to be mindful always, but the mental model helps tremendously!

At this point of view, i have not finished the book, but i read slowly and bring it to meditation, and i have no rush to complete it, just letting it grows on me at its own pace.(...)
Upon further reading and utilizing the mind models into daily practice, it is tremendously helpful to find tips on how to change the habitual pattern built since birth till the present. To recognize how a self conscious delusion arises, thus it is much easier to check and catch.
A highly recommended book for you if you really want to train your mind but you find traditional method of mind training too difficult and too abstract to apply, because it explains in very clear way what is the purpose of certain training (i.e. the bodhisattva vow).

The public perception of the making of the atomic bomb is yet an image of the dramatic efforts of a few brilliant male scientists. However, the Manhattan Project was not just the work of a few and it was not just in Los Alamos. It was, in fact, a sprawling research and industrial enterprise that spanned the country from Hanford in Washington State to Oak Ridge in Tennessee, and the Met labs in Illinois.

The Manhattan Project also included women in every capacity. During World War II the manpower shortages opened the laboratory doors to women and they embraced the opportunity to demonstrate that they, too, could do "creative science." Although women participated in all aspects of the Manhattan Project, their contributions are either omitted or only mentioned briefly in most histories of the project. It is this hidden story that is presented in Their Day in the Sun through interviews, written records, and photographs of the women who were physicists, chemists, mathematicians, biologists, and technicians in the labs.

Authors Ruth H. Howes and Caroline L. Herzenberg have uncovered accounts of the scientific problems the women helped solve as well as the opportunities and discrimination they faced. Their Day in the Sun describes their abrupt recruitment for the war effort and includes anecdotes about everyday life in these clandestine improvised communities. A chapter about what happened to the women after the war and about their attitudes now, so many years later, toward the work they did on the bomb is included.

1 out of 5 stars Good idea, badly flawed execution.......2002-12-21

Although attempts to profile female contributions to great undertakings are appreciated, ýTheir day in the sun,ý is fundamentally flawed by the authorsý bias toward academic, primarily physicist, researchers and by the authorsý failure to understand the mechanisms and downstream effects of Manhattan Project technologies. This has lead to a poorly organized document that spends pages on the contributions of a truck driver, secretary, or clerk whose husband was a Los Alamos or Chicago Met Lab physicist while ignoring the contributions of the tens of thousands of women who worked at other facilities, often in professional scientific or engineering capabilities. This is partially due to the uniqueness and historic significance of the atom bomb. However, other successes growing out of the Manhattan Project touch our lives every day: the medical isotopes that delineate a blocked heart artery, the separations that make good vaccines and new plastics possible, and the nuclear power reactors that remain our cleanest electric energy generators.

The authors indicate that the limitations on their research imposed by the availability of published documents or potential interviewees were responsible for their omissions. However, in preparing reviews of the technology developed at a variety of Manhattan Project sites, my working group found reasonable access to both people and written records. Also, epidemiological researchers who have evaluated clinical effects, mortality, and morbidity of Manhattan project staff have been able to contact significant portions of former workers. Recent epidemiological studies of ýfemaleý illnesses (e. g., breast cancer) make the omission of the bulk of the Manhattan Projectýs female staff for reasons other than bias or intellectual laxness difficult to understand.

4 out of 5 stars Woman and the Atomic Bomb.......2000-01-14

This work chronicles the role that women played in the Manhatten project during World War II in the fields of mathematics, chemistry, physics, health biology, etc. It also provides an interesting account of the role of women in the physics discoveries during the early twentieth century which made the development of nuclear weapons possible.

This book is especially valuable since this information has not been treated in any kind of systematic way in any previous historical accounts of the Manhatten project.

The four studies in this book center on the Western obsession with the nature of personal identity. Focusing on the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, but with an eye toward antiquity and the present, Caroline Walker Bynum explores the themes of metamorphosis and hybridity in genres ranging from poetry, folktales, and miracle collections to scholastic theology, devotional treatises, and works of natural philosophy. She argues that the obsession with boundary-crossing and otherness was an effort to delineate nature's regularities and to establish a strong sense of personal identity, extending even beyond the grave. She examines historical figures such as Marie de France, Gerald of Wales, Bernard Clairvaux, Thomas Aquinas, and Dante, as well as modern fabulists such as Angela Carter, as examples of solutions to the perennial question of how the individual can both change and remain constant. Addressing the fundamental question for historians -- that of change -- Bynum also explores the nature of history writing itself.

When the weather becomes extreme or even unseasonal, "El Nino" is usually the phrase we hear. Every three to seven years, El Nino disrupts weather all over the globe, second only to the change of seasons in its influence on the climate. But what is El Nino? El Nino is the name given to the unusual increase in ocean temperatures along the Peruvian and the Ecuadorian coasts that is part of a larger pattern of changes in wind and weather throughout the world. With El Nino come violent storms and upsets in global food chain that dramatically affect both humans and wildlife. Effects can be as gentle as a mild winter in northeastern United States or as violent as drought in Southeast Asia, brutal storms in South America, and wildfires in Australia. With the help of carefully selected photographs and clarifying charts and maps, Caroline Arnold makes clear how this remarkable weather pattern forms, how scientists track it, what its effects are, and why following its path is of such importance.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Stormy Weather.......2000-10-10

Caroline Arnold does it again with her book El Nino: Stormy Weather for People and Wildlife. Arnold incorporates images, created by satellites, to show the cause and effect of El Nino. After discussing the weather phenomenon itself, she then surveys the effect it has on wildlife and the connection it has to diseases, past and future. A great book for all ages.
