Nature's Bounty.......2002-05-17
Tom Seymour, acclaimed as a naturalist from the State of Maine, has written a fascinating survey of nature's bounty. This book is highly recommended to readers with an interest in ecology and the world of nature. The author supplies much hard to find information concerning nature's many hidden treasures: edible plants, medicinal plants, and the like. The book features superb color plates, cross-referencing, and a writing style that says "keep reading...."

Customer Reviews:
a poor excuse for a Moon Handbook............2007-02-20
I know Brazil is a big country...but I was a bit surprised when I found that there was not a bit of information on Brasilia. I found it absurd that the capital of Brazil, with a population of over a million people, not only does not have a section....it is NOT even listed in the index!
Good guide for historical perspective - bad maps and recommendations.......2007-01-26
I just returned from a four week trip around Brazil. I took this guide and Let's Go Brazil. This guide was very useful from an information point of view. The author gave a lot of background into the country's history and culture.
However, the restaurant and hotel recommendations were terrible. I often wondered if the person had ever been to these places! We visited two of the "specially" recommended hotels in Natal. The first one was a real dump and the other had burned down! We found this to be true of all the recommended hotels and pretty much stopped using the book for this purpose.
The prices were also wildly off. I expected some discrepancy between the book prices and the real prices, but not to the extent we encountered. In Salvador we tried one of the moderately priced restaurants. It turned out to be one of our most expensive meals, and not one of our most memorable either.
The maps in this book are also wildly off. In Salvador, some of the most important landmarks were put on the wrong spot. We also encountered problems with other maps. The Rio one seemed to be okay though.
Overall, I'd recommend this book for someone who wants some background information on the country and its culture. However, I wouldn't rely on the hotel or restaurant recommendations or the maps. Buy another guide for that.
Rio part is mostly wrong.......2006-08-10
The Rio part of this book is replete with gross errors. Some of the resturant prices are 2 to 3 times what they are listed in the book. One of restaurants that is listed as a bargain is, in fact, one of the most expensive in Rio.
The maps of Rio are plain aweful, they simply show "points of interest" that are two or three blocks off their actual location. I am not talking about one or two, but more like half that I have tried to find...
Kinda makes you wonder if the author has been to Rio at all...
Business or Tour a great Brazilian guide.......2006-03-21
São Paulo is the largest Brazilian city, how do you find a hotel near your trade show event or congress? How to fix or order your palm power supply or your network cable? Even these stuff are covered on the book, more than a traditional tour guide. A Brazlian view by an american citizen living in the country. Business travelling or Tour are both well covered on the book.
Excellent Book for Travellers.......2006-03-11
What a great guide to this wonderful country - It is a completely up-to-date guide a expert who lives in Brazil give you the inside track, showing the reader the things to see and do. It is not not just a listing of tourist trappings, rather a substantial guide to the real Brazil. Before you leave, be sure to pack this guide to ensure you don't miss a thing."

Book Description
Aquarium enthusiasts encounter a whole new world when they collect saltwater varieties of fish. They also face different challenges from the ones they met with their freshwater tanks. Vivid full-color photos on every page of this manual show dozens among the different saltwater fish and sea creatures available to enthusiasts. A detailed text with tables and sidebars explains how to maintain a saltwater tank, which fish are compatible, and how to keep all of them healthy.
Customer Reviews:
A light introduction that should definitely be supplemented.......2004-02-09
I bought this book in 1996 when I was thinking of going from freshwater to saltwater. I found the information extremely helpful in making general decisions regarding stocking the tank. The rating system of 1-10 for each fish's ease of care has proven true over and over again. The fish the authors chose to describe are very common in the aquarium trade. If nothing else, it prevented me from making disastrous choices regarding tank mates. This is a beginner's book, an introduction to the world of saltwater. If I had read "Natural Reef Aquariums" by Tullock first, I probably would never have set up a tank. I would have thought that marine fishkeeping was too expensive and complicated for me, when in fact it has been very rewarding and worth the effort and the price! Maybe this should be classified with one of those "For Dummies" books because it provides an easy to read, enjoyable introduction, but you would never consider it to be your only reference. This book was lost while I was visiting my mother in the hospital and I missed it so much, I bought another. I'm glad I still have it in my library along with the other, more detailed, books. I rate it 4 stars because it's an excellent starting point.
It's too little to be really helpful for much.......2003-03-29
This book is basicly a fish guide, and that's fine because that's what I expected from it. The problem is it only gives maybe a paragraph or 2 per group of fish, and then only a paragraph on about 4-8 of the particular species. The info about the fish is fine for the most part, I just expected a more fish info and less pictures and large fonts.
The bottom line is, I wouldn't buy this book again and I'll keep it if for no other reason then the pictures are very nice.
One of the best photo marine book for its price.......2002-03-19
Every book has its strength and weaknesses. To criticize this book for lack of reef information is unfair because this book was targeted towards the audience who either have not owned a fishtank before or who has freshwater experience but getting into salt water setup with fish only tank. I read the book cover to cover in a very short time and I feel that I've learned so much in just two hours which I would not have if I read a "more detailed" book. I got an excellent overall view of the marine fish keeping, the physiological differences between salt and fresh water fish, the evolution between the two, etc. The colorful brilliant photos printed on high quality paper for popular marine fishes is worth keeping the book for its price as a quick reference to show friends. My personal favorite and if not the only reason to keep this book is the picture of the "Picasso Triggerfish". Literally, that fish looks like an artist random dabs and stroke colorful paint all over the fish's body and it has the personality of a true pet who sleeps like a hog and rearrange and personalize its own shelter. Doesn't that make you want to go out and collect such an adorable fish? That is a mark of a good book to inspire a beginner to study more and to learn more so that one day you can keep one of those. If Clown Triggerfish cost over a hundred, that Picasso (Rhinecanthus Aculeatus) must cost much more! Reason for not being a 5 star is that this book could have gone into more detail into the poison of the Mandarin fish and how it may or may not be harmful to its surrounding ecology and fish. I really don't understand why the author would put such information to make a reader curious yet not satisfy their curiousity? Points OFF. Also, I think the tank setup is a bit outdated and I would recommend visiting a local marine fish store or the internet for updated filters/skimmers currently available. Can't really blame the author because the book was written about 8 years ago and wet/dry filtration would be too expensive for most beginners back then. Reason for not being a 3 is that each photo selected for this text is meticulously hand picked to represent the most beautiful of breed, not just some randomly obscure photo as in most pocket hand books for fish identification. Solid, easy to flip quality photo book to show friends.
Excellent overview book to guide a beginner for introducing the types of marine fishes available to help them decide what kind of fish they would like to keep in their collection. Unless you already own a more comprehensive photo handbook, this book is a good place to start.
A good reference book for stocking up a fish only aquarium.......2001-08-21
It gives good identification of commonly available marine fish with a lot of great photos in high quality prints. It is specially useful as an aid to choosing fish. Pretty basic on setup and disease. Overall, it is a good beginner book for stocking a fish only aquarium system.
Hardly 'comprehensive' and poorly edited........2001-02-05
The author (or his 'consultant') have several mistakes in this book - amongst the species descriptions for example, they say the Catalina Goby "will thrive in a tropical invertebrate aquarium" though "Not a true tropical animal..." WRONG. This fish will perish quickly in a tropical environ. There is a photo of Engineer/Convict Gobies identified as catfish! And the author highly recommends a Cleaner Wrasse in every system - foolish, these are obligate cleaners and should be left on the reef. They'll harass your other fish like crazy, and usually refuse regular food. The coverage of system setup, maintenance and disease are very, very lightweight, and rather outdated. If you're looking to get started in Marine Aquariums, buy a book from John Tullock or Robert Fenner. They're more expensive, but worth every penny. This one belongs on the shelves of elementary schools' libraries - well, even that's not fair to elementary students!

Good summary of all Chevrolet models in the 60's.......1999-02-10
This is a good book if you'd like an overview of each Chevrolet model from 1960-1969. A chapter is devoted to each year, so there isn't a lot of detail on any individual year/model. It's more of a coffee table book than a reference book. Good photos.
Book Description
Arisaemas have become increasingly popular and highly prized for their sculptural aspect and their intriguing inflorescences. Adding to the fascination of arisaemas is their ability, unique in Araceae, to change their sex many times during their lifetime. This book represents the first attempt since Engler's classification in 1910 to bring order to the confused state of knowledge about the genus in its geographical range. Richly illustrated, this botanical treatment is a comprehensive and invaluable resource for botanists, arisaema growers, and nature lovers.
Customer Reviews:
The Genus Arisaema, 2nd Edition .......2007-01-05
The 2nd edition is a markedly improved and extended update of the ground-breaking original. New information, new pictures. The accurate line-drawings for recognizing species by leaf-type have been preserved.
The Genus Arisaema.......2006-11-10
Fine organization and descriptions of the species in the genus. Not so complex that a beginner can't follow. It is necessary to keep referring to the definations. since the details are important. I'm pleased to add this book to the one on Aroids by Demi Brown.
A Great Guide.......2004-11-25
This book is a must have book for any botanic garden library. The amount of information is unbelievable and very easy to follow. There are sections on growing, propagating, hardiness and more. Everything you need to know to grow these plants.
The Gusman's describe each plant wonderfully, although I wish a hint of hardiness was included in the descriptions so I could start making a list of some for my garden. There are tons of photos that are so beautiful and so well taken that it will make you want to dive right into this strange group of plants.

Book Description
The medieval concern with Arabic is well established. There was, however, a `second wave' of Arabic interest in seventeenth-century Europe, which is not widely known. The essays in this volume reveal that, contrary to all expectation, the study of Arabic was pursued by a circle of natural philosophers, philologists and theologians in England in close contact with those on the Continent. Arabic was defended as an aid to biblical exegesis and as the key to a `treasure house' of ancient knowledge. It led to the founding of Arabic chairs at Oxford and Cambridge Universities, endowed by archbishops and merchants. Arabic was taught, along with Hebrew, at Westminster school. Immense collections of Arabic manuscripts were acquired both privately and by libraries, such as the Bodleian at Oxford. They were sought after by natural philosophers in their research in observational astronomy or in the reconstruction of Greek mathematics. Arabic was also part of the Anglican interest in Eastern Churches. In addition to the earlier elegant editions of the Medici Press at Rome, bi-lingual texts, grammars, lexicons, and histories, were published by trained Arabists. Forgeries emerged based on Arabo-Latin alchemical texts. Arabic was included in the concern with a universal philosophical language. Arabic subjects featured extensively in the correspondence of the Royal Society. The impact of translated texts extended to the Quakers as well as to individual figures, such as Locke. In short, at a time when least expected, Arabic interest permeated all levels of English society, encompassing subjects which ranged from science, religion, and medicine, to typography and importing garden plants. Fourteen historians from different disciplines examine the extent and sources of this phenomenon. Arabic interest is shown to have been a significant aspect of the rise of Protestant intellectual tradition. It was also a major component of University reforms and of secular academic scholarship at Oxford and Cambridge. Thus the period also marks the institutionalisation of Arabic studies. By identifying many unexpected `Arabick' strands in the complex skein of seventeenth-century English concerns, this volume opens new lines of investigation and challenges some of the accepted historical interpretations of the period. Jones, Raymond Mercier, George Molland, William Newman, Vivian Salmon, Colin Wakefield and Andrew Wear.

Customer Reviews:
Absolutely FANTASTIC.......2007-10-04
Simply put, helpful book. I'm working to spread the word about the value of drumming in my professional presentations...and I often facilitate drum circles for those with dementia. The tips in this book significantly improved my understanding and skills. Much thanks to Christine.
A keeper.......2007-05-21
Christine is on her "A" game with this book. Chock full of information and insight, the "Art and Heart of Drum Circles" should be on every facilitator's reading list. The included CD makes for great audio reference to material covered in the book. If you have not gotten a chance to see Christine facilitate a drum circle, she is even more fun live. Good job!
The Art and Heart of Drum Circles.......2005-09-23
I have created two regular musical jam sessions in my town, but realized that there was a need for people who do not play an instrument or do not read music. My search led me to the drum circle concept. Apparently the concept has evolved from pure drumming to being inclusive of many more instruments and sound makers. The Art and Heart of Drum Circles is the most supportive book that I have read on this subject. It is an easy read (includes a CD) and it is very encouraging to new circle facilitators. Christine Stevens makes you feel good about what you are attemping to do while helping you with plenty of information and examples. This is an outstanding text.
"Art & Heart" Hits Heart of the Matter.......2004-03-23
Christine Stevens' "The Art & Heart of Drum Circles" is a short and sweet guide to facilitating a community drum circle. This book really makes sense! It breaks it all down and tells you how to facilitate a rhythm event from the start: How to arrange a room, what gear to buy, what techniques to use, what your helpers should do, problem drummers and ways to handle them, etc.
A lot of this information is already out there in some form or other in other books or on the web. However, this book organizes all that into something that is clear and concise. It's less wide-open drumming enthusiasm and more practical approach to making a great event.
For those of you who aren't familiar with Christine, she's a Music Therapist who is on Remo's HealthRhythms staff. The book draws largely on her partnerships with music therapists, researchers, and health and wellness folks such as Dr. Barry Bittman, Will Schmid, Barry Bernstein, Robert Lawrence Friedman, and others.
At less than 100 pages, it's fairly pricey for a little book ($15) but does include a CD. Speaking of which, the CD is frequently referenced in the book (things like "for an example of this technique listen to track 9. You'll hear the interplay of conga v. djembe that illustrates....").
For drum circle facilitators, this is the stuff! Add this one to your collection.
"In a drum circle, if you can't see the drums, all you see is a group of people working together, expressing their unique voice in a group song, united by a common pulse." - from the book.
