Book Description
Living at the limits of our ordinary perception, mosses are a common but largely unnoticed element of the natural world. "Gathering Moss" is a beautifully written mix of science and personal reflection that invites readers to explore and learn from the elegantly simple lives of mosses.
In this series of linked personal essays, Robin Kimmerer leads general readers and scientists alike to an understanding of how mosses live and how their lives are intertwined with the lives of countless other beings. Kimmerer explains the biology of mosses clearly and artfully, while at the same time reflecting on what these fascinating organisms have to teach us.
Drawing on her experiences as a scientist, a mother, and a Native American, Kimmerer explains the stories of mosses in scientific terms as well as in the framework of indigenous ways of knowing. In her book, the natural history and cultural relationships of mosses become a powerful metaphor for ways of living in the world.

Of a different order.......2007-08-20
Since, I've been recommending this book to all my friends with botanical interests ever since I read it two months ago, I might as well try to sing its praises to a broader public. I found it to be a book of a different order from most other nature books I've read. I'm not talking about comparative rankings here, though there is much to praise, but about its uniqueness. The only book in my acquaintance that I'm tempted to compare it to (though with a deeply respectful nod to the books of Lewis Thomas) is Aldo Leopold's "A Sand County Almanac". Both Leopold and Kimmerer have created essays with seemingly effortless grace and formal purpose, and both leave the reader with an enduring impression of someone writing who is, first and foremost, not a writer or a scientist or an environmental moralist, but, plainly and sincerely, a human being living and learning from and cherishing earth's nonhuman creatures insofar as possible on their own terms. We are most and best human when living in such caring wonder.
Birthday gift.......2007-01-19
Book came in time for birthday, in spite of bad weather and recipient was delighted.
Excellent Reading.......2005-10-11
I bought this book because the author was coming to the environmental center I volunteer for. It is a wonderful book and the woman who wrote it is so deserving of our respect and praise. To quote someone who says it all, Janisse Ray said "something I took for granted has come alive, because I have been given its story. After reading this book, I took a magnifying glass outside and pored over the tree trunks. I have seen Robin Kimmerer's miniature landscape for myself. Yet, this is so much more than a book about mosses. This is a Native American woman speaking. This is a mother's story. This is a science revealed through human psyche. Robin Kimmerer is a scientist who combines empiricism with all other forms of knowing. Hers is a spectacularly different view of the world and her voice needs to be heard."
I heartily recommend this book.
Great way to get into mosses.......2005-08-04
I've never purchased one of those books Amazon suggests when you're buying other books. But I'm glad I bought this one. Kimmerer is a scientist, a poet, a mother, a Native American and all these strands are blended in this remarkable book about her passion: bryophytes. Each chapter is a story that not only introduces fascinating information about these tiny but ubiquitous plants, but makes the entry into their world easy for a non-bryologist, AND leads to deep reflection about life. I found myself reading the book slowly, savoring and reflecting on each chapter. I plan to read it again before the year is out.
Seeing green.......2004-11-18
I had originally picked up this book after reading a review in which the author was favorably compared to Annie Dillard's Pilgrim At Tinker Creek. The first of the essays 'The Standing Stones' defiantly had hints of Dillard in it but the rest of the book did not continue in that same vain (I can only assume that particular review only read the first few pages). If Dillard is the forest, Kimmerer is the tree (or rather the moss on the tree).
This book represents a look at the natural world as though on one's hands and knees with a magnifying glass. Everywhere the author is seeing mosses-both literarily (mosses really do seem to be willing to grow almost anywhere) and figuratively. But perhaps what I found most surprisingly about it all is that the talk of mosses never seemed forced, like it was just being shoved unwillingly into a discussion of her relationship with her daughter but rather always seemed to naturally flow. I do not believe this is so much because of the relevance of mosses to all of these topics as much as it is because of Kimmerer's unique vision. This unique (almost megalomaniacal) vision is what allows the book to escapee feeling artificial because for Kimmerer none of these moss connections are forces, she really does see it. Like a man who thinks he sees his lover's face everywhere; so goes Kimmerer see mosses. The uninitiated cannot expect to see as the lover sees but this book does give a glimpse.
Having said all of that I will say that this book was a little heavy on the Latin names for me-this is largely because, as Kimmerer, explains most mosses do not have common names but still... it seems to create a cretin impersonalness-as if you were introduced to someone who was suppose to be your new best friend but you were asked to only use his surname, Mr.so-and-so.
While I certainly feel enriched by the flood of new horticultural information found in Gathering Moss it's greatest strength is in providing that glimpse of the world through the eyes of a lover.

Not many pictures but USEFUL!.......2006-11-29
I just picked this up and am headed to St Lucia next week (will update after I return). After getting this book, the Insight guide, and the Rough guide (which is anything but rough) I like this best. It's throw-in-your pocket small, chock full of info, and every page I open, I find things I want to do, and enough instruction on how to go about doing it. It has nice maps, and things seem well organized by topic (nice notable for parents- kids section). The top 10 list of things to do peaked my interest: every one of the items sound GREAT. I think this book is more tumed to the active traveller that really wants to get out and see their destination. I gave this 5 stars because it's the best guide I have for getting around, but it is lacking pictures, of which it only has a few. No big deal, I'll take my own :)

Customer Reviews:
what it features is great, however, the book itself..........2000-12-19
...leaves much to be desired. the editors don't say very much about the projects, in terms of hard stats. and there really arent that many projects featured in the book, even though what is featured is excellent. i would suggest spending money on one of the items featured rather than on this catalogue, which in my opinion isnt really designed that well.
a collection of inventive and unique designs.......2000-09-28
this book is a showcase of recent book and print design. there's some interesting stuff in here: sleek, high-tech design alongside handmade, single or limited edition books and promo materials. the work featured is from various parts of the world, and spans different styles, materials, and methods. it's a great book to get ideas from for your own designs, especially if you're looking to make your own book or packaging. also nice to flip through if you're simply interested in looking at some original, sometimes quirky, ingenious graphic design and packaging. the artwork mostly speaks for itself with only a short description of each piece, and interpretation/opinion is left to the viewer (as it should be). the book layout is clean, and the use of bright colors enhances rather than detracts from the artwork presented. all in all a nice little package for the designer looking for inspiration and for those looking for that conversation piece to put on their coffee table.
printed matters.......2000-08-29
really good, tonnes of contemporary book, pamphlet & booklet designs from all over the world (even some australian stuff). a nice addition to your design library. i even bought some of the books featured in it!
awesome.......2000-05-27
This book shows us all that a powerful typography book should show. I mean, a compendium of trendy and experimental works with typography and different kind of materials. I think that it is a must for designers to have this book.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Educational, Though at least one breed should not be here.......2007-01-31
As with many other books written by this author, it is highly educational about the history and present of dog fighting. It is NOT written to be of some type of tool to teach others how to raise fighting dogs, despite what some who have purchased this book were hoping for.
I really only have one complaint, if you will, and that is the inclusion of the Presa Canario as a fighting breed. Careful research of this breed [the biggest resource being the United States parent club] makes it very clear that while SOME Presa canarios could fight, and were on occassion, used for the sport... the breed was NOT selectively bred solely for fighting ability, as the American Pit Bull Terrier (and other bull breeds) and Tosa Inu were, for example. I personally believe that the Presa should have been omitted for this reason... it was never selectively bred for fighting alone. But, that is my opinion.
$30 at BOOKS-A-MILLION.......2005-08-09
THE PICTURS ARE GOOD, BUT THAT'S ABOUT IT. NO REAL RELEAVANT INFO/INSTRUCTIONS A DOG OWNER COULD USE. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!
Well detailed and researched.......2004-11-13
This is very similar to The World of Fighting Dogs. While there's more information about each breed, there aren't many new breeds. I count the Jindo, the Canary Dog, and the South African Boerboel. I'm not sure that this necessitated a new book, but when I'm looking for information I turn to this book instead of The World of Fighting Dogs since, as I noted, it does contain more information.
Once again, the photographs are excellent, and I'm glad that Dr. Semencic went to the trouble of pulling so many photos together. These dogs are truly beautiful examples of their breed.
One You Shouldn't Miss Out On.......2004-01-02
I have over 65 dog books and this is by far one of my best. This book is well written, full of information, and a joy to read. Get it!
An opinionated but informative look at a rare subject.......2003-05-27
Dr. Sememcic gives us a look into the world of canines that are unfortunately common place in todays headlines He is also able to deliver a breif overture of some obscure and rather unheard of breeds. Some of his references are one sided and opinionated. But to his credit he does do more research on the subject of fighting dogs than some of the other better known authors. I felt that the book was very informative and I did enjoy it despite the author's sometimes boring text book style of narative. The pictures in this book are some of the best that I have ever seen in any dog book. I would definately recodmend this book.

My Weeds.......2006-11-02
Sara Stein shares her amazing in-depth knowlege of the botany of weeds with a sense of humor that makes this book a "I can't put it down" volume.
great book.......2002-05-11
I love this book. I am amazed by her depth of knowledge. Plus it's a good read. I am re-reading it now, keeping it by my bedside to read a few paragraphs each night. Such a wealth of knowledge.
I am so bummed that this is out of print.......1999-03-25
I first read this a year or so ago and just loved it. This book gave me an even greater appreciation for the intelligence of plants, their adaptability, and the information we can gain from the presence of certain weeds if we know what we are looking at. The author talks about her ongoing struggle with the weeds that inhabit her gardening space. There are no winners or losers in this war, but a definate relationship is created between the two.
This book is very enjoyable to read as well as being full of great, and accurate, information.
wonderful to read and botanically accurate.......1997-09-10
This book will delight any and all who have done or will do battle with weeds.
Mrs. Stein has a delightful style that is warm and personable. Her research
was excellent and the reader will discover much about the secret lives of these much maligned plants.
Anyone that is thinking about starting a garden
should read this book

Customer Reviews:
Good but young.......2007-05-06
This was on a list of suggested reading from a class I attended with Second City. I bought it hoping to use some of the ideas for my middle schoolers. There are many ideas in the book for younger kids, like songs. There are some good ideas that can be adapted into a middle school room.
It been great in my classroom.......2006-11-10
I teach sixth grade math, and have a group of students for an exploratory class. We talk about current events, esteem building, community building, fun non-academic skills with an emphasis on social awareness. I have been using this book for most of the year so far, and my students look forward to it,a nd ask for it. I don't have a background in theater, but this book has several premade units that have a focus on different skills. The one I am just completing focuses on community building for the group and concentration and focus for the individual. I find it easy to use, and I like the skills that it is building and reinforcing in my students. If you don't want to do a whole unit, the individual exercises and warm-ups can be set up and completed in 5-10 minutes. Great, and quick!
I strongly recommend this for any classroom!
Not what I thought it would be.......2006-05-10
I teach drama/theater in a low income public school. I bought the book because my school has very few resources and I thought this might be useful. As it turned out the book was hardly used during my first year teaching. My biggest problem with this book is that it is not very user friendly for a teacher who just wants to add some fun to a class but not a complex game. In other words the book needs to make the games simpler so the kids can pick them up faster and have more fun. This might not be problem for teachers in high school as your students might be more mature and able to handle more complex games. But for middle school teachers tread lightly. Also if you have a bunch of behavior problems in your class then forgot about it. In my experience I found the worse the behavior the better they were at spoiling fun classroom games. Be warned.
Theater Games for the Classroom: A Teacher's Handbook.......2005-08-28
EXCELLENT!! Inspiring. Well Organized. So many great ideas for the new or seasoned acting teacher.
My bible!.......2002-09-24
As a teacher of drama to many low-income, urban, and "difficult" adolescents, this is the book that I find most useful, alive, and inspiring! Simply wonderful for anyone trying to bring the best out of young actors!
