Customer Reviews:
Good for city travel.......2002-05-22
Frommers now has numerous books that cover British Columbia as part of larger guides. I have the British Columbia/Canadian Rockies one, but they all contain the same text, which has been repackaged into different titles. As to this book itself, the layout is easy to find your way around and the information is reliable and has obviously been well researched. The hotel listings are especially detailed, down to descriptions of inroom curtains. This formula obviously appeals to many travelers and while I often pass up their hotel listings (too expensive for me), their restaurant descriptions are extremely helpful for me when on the road. They often describe actual dishes giving me a great feel of what to expect in each restaurant.
On the downside, so much space is given to accommodations and restaurants that the most important part of traveling is as good as ignored-what there is to see and do. The reason I travel and that BC is so popular as a destination is the great outdoors. I want to read about what there is do and what to see-the best hiking trails in the national parks, why it's worth my money to go whalewatching, etc. Many marvelous places in the province are missing completely. The book also lacks photos and the maps are poor or outdated (nothing that a good map from a gas station will fix!).
In conclusion, I like the look and feel of the Frommers book and have found that I can rely it when it comes to dining information. I always carry the Moon book as a reference for the ins and outs of each town and together the two books make perfect partners for my travels.
The best part of Canada!.......2000-08-02
I am just several days before spending my holiday in British Columbia and the Canadian rockies, and this book really gives a lot of pre-fun. Very informative, very useful information (with places to stay, places to dine, must see attractions etc.) and an enthusiastic style make it a pleasure to read. I am sure that it will be of great value for every tourist who will visit this part of Canada.

Educational and fun at the same time.......2000-05-18
I have always believed that learning can be fun. The Timucua Indians : A Native American Detective Story is a perfect example of educating young people without them knowing it. This book explores the Timucua natural environment from a childs perspective. The page by page activities makes reading this story fun. My 10 year old daughter loves these types of books. I am glad we found this one. We are from Jacksonville, Florida and the book has opened her eyes to a culture that existed long before we ever did and now, hopefully won't be forgotten.

Saving Planet Earth.......2000-08-16
I particularly like books no more than 150 pages in length, with an elegant and simple style and with good glossaries and indexes. Poppy Evans makes all that available in THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO ECO-FRIENDLY DESIGN, one of the user-friendliest books I have ever read. It is also a well-organized book that makes its EARTH IN THE BALANCE message clear and its environmentally responsible print shop easy to set up.
The six chapters look at how to fight toxicity and how much recycling can be done on the job even for those not using such earth-friendly print shop stock as soy- and vegetable-based inks. Susan Quilliam warns in the earlier INTO PRINT: HOW TO MAKE DESKTOP PUBLISHING WORK FOR YOU about recycled paper's rough finish possibly causing press-damaging dust. However, Evans assures us that recycled paper has gotten better while its price has lowered.
The section I find most intriguing is on all the tree-free paper sources. I ended up rooting for kenaf as a new Southern cash crop replacing tobacco. Also, Evans reminds us that the Watson Paper Company of Albuquerque, New Mexico, makes Levi Strauss' non-bleached blue paper from denim scraps.
I would read other books by the author. It is especially helpful to read Evans along with Mary Pretzer's CREATIVE LOW-BUDGET PUBLICATION DESIGN. Probably anyone interested in computer publishing and graphic arts, as well as in environmental studies and marketing, would find this a worthwhile read.

Customer Reviews:
Very basic.......2007-03-18
The book I got shows it was a freebie from Hill's, but I assume it's just like the one pictured. I found it to be very basic with not much in the way of new information. This would be fine with someone who needed some ideas about starting a fitness program for him or herself and/or to add the family dog to the fitness program.
Informative book.......2006-11-05
This book was informative and easy to follow. There were many helpful ideas and programs for all levels of fitness. It was easy to read and had references that were very useful. An easy and inexpensive way to get in shape.
Great for anyone wanting a life change for both yourself and your pet. .......2006-05-12
After reading the book, I feel empowered to start a new life that focuses on really becoming the best I can be. Having my dog involved in the process even further fuels my push to get into shape. The book includes personality test and diet tips as well as fitness tips for getting into shape. By working out with my pet, I found not only a greater motivation to work out, but I actually found my fitness routine go from blah to vibrant. I highly recommend this book for any pet lover looking for a life change of fitness and health.

Customer Reviews:
A fun, exciting, educational book........1998-09-04
During all the adventure and excitement (of which there is plenty) you learn quite a bit about Vikings. My only complaint is that occasionally these historical facts can slow down the story.
A great history and grammar book for children of all ages.......1997-04-09
Scarlett Ryan Foster surprised me with her historical knowledge and expertise in writing. This book can and should be read by children of all ages as well as adults. The concept of two young Michigan children traveling back in time made me think of "Back to the Future" films only going in the opposite direction. To suddenly find yourself in a foreign country, not know the language or customs, and be able to deal with the problems because you already learned about it in school or from your parents was a great concept.
The book not only travels through time but also places that are no longer on the maps of today's world. It teaches grammar in a most delightful way. It also teaches history in a way that makes it enjoyable to read. In so doing children can learn from it and not realize they are doing so. The book may be fiction but it is based on history and the Viking way of life. The author has placed a Glossary in the Appendix, along with a listing of additional sources to help children learn more, and went so far as to list suggested activities for children, students, teachers, parents, and families to do to further educate everyone.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and learned from it as well and I have been out of school several decades. I recommend this book for any school, library, and family.

Book Description
National Geographic magazine has long been a staple of home, school, and public libraries across the country. In Veils and Daggers, Linda Steet provides a critically insightful and alternative interpretation of National Geographic by examining one hundred years of its Arab world coverage. Steet's analysis of the discourses of Orientalism, patriarchy, and primitivism in the magazine's representation of the Arab world uncovers the ideological perspectives that have guided National Geographic throughout its history. Drawing on cultural, feminist, and postcolonial criticism, Steet generates alternative readings that challenge the magazine's claims to objectivity and to mirroring the world. In this fascinating journey, it becomes clear that neither textual nor visual constructions of Arab women andmen, of Islam, and of Arab culture in the magazine can be regarded as natural or self-evident, and it is artfully demonstrated that the act of representing others is never innocent. Steet turns National Geographic inside out showing that decade after decade, while Arabs were locked into predictable Orientalist interpretations, National Geographic was itself veiled and daggered. Veils and Daggers repositions and redefines National Geographic as an educational journal. Steet's work is an important and groundbreaking contribution in the areas of social foundations of education, cultural studies, feminist studies, social studies, and ethnic studies. Once encountered, readers of National Geographic will never regard it in the same manner again.
Customer Reviews:
It's about time.......2003-10-09
It's about time someone took National Geographic to task for their ethnocentric coverage of the world. Steet does this with a sophisticated, yet accessible (and sometimes humorous) understanding and use of theory. Her analysis and discussion of one hundred years of photographs published by NG is provocative and educational. This book is great for curriculum classes, journalism classes, photography classes, cultural studies, women studies, and many others I am sure.

Customer Reviews:
Herbal Pharmacy.......2002-06-23
Jerry Baker's books are always concise, practical, and never leave room for guess work. In this book he has applied those principals to give us a small book packed full of specific information and done it with witt and humor. He has helped preserve a dying art and preserved information for generations to come. I have several large herbal reference books, but none give specific amounts to take of an herb, which left me guessing. He gives specific details and also tells you in the margins counterindications if the herb might not be appropriate to take. For people who take their herbs seriously, they will not find a better guide.

The monologues were annotated.......2000-08-09
so, the previous review is mistaken. I would suggest that the author put on their reading glasses next time. Otherwise, I agree with evreything she said.
Fact and Fiction - but Fascinating.......2000-07-24
Reading this book was like watching a camera zoom away from a close-up of an individual to a larger, more comprehensive shot. This is because Ms. Jarett begins her description of erotic dance in the mid 1800's, and ends it in the 1990's, since erotic dancing is something that must be seen to be fully experienced. The chapters based in our modern times are therefore a better read, since Lucinda Jarrett has a talent for describing the details of a scene so well that you feel the places and people instead of reading about them. This doesn't mean that her first chapters are dull, or hard to read. They're interesting and clearly written, but I could imagine her frustration at trying to transform a spotty paper trail of documents into a living, breathing portrait of a period. She concentrates on a single performer per chapter for all but the last two chapters. The chapter first sets the general legal and social atmosphere that the performers played in, then moves into a brief biography of the performer. From this point springs a sometimes lengthy "monologue" written in the performer's character. This is sometimes followed by more social/ historical description. Although I enjoyed some of the monologues immensely, I wish that Ms. Jarrett had annotated them, because they're not exactly history as much as they are the author's attempt to intuitively grasp the psychology and voice of performers long since deceased. They're well done, but I have no way of thinking critically about her characterizations unless I know where she got her background from - and I imagine that some of her background information is hard to chase down. Overall, I was impressed by the amount of research and effort that she put into this book, and by the way she boiled all her research down to make a fascinating book about a fascinating subject. Not "academic", not "dry": she treats the performers and industry players as people who lived, breathed, won, and lost, dancing in the moral grey zone beneath the colored lights.

Book Description
Michael Dransfield blazed like a doomed comet through Australian poetry skies in the years 1968 to 1973. A child of his age - one of the Generation of '68 - Dransfield experimented with drugs and alternative lifestyles, confronted in a personal way the crisis of the Vietnam War and, like so many others, was swept up in the hope, euphoria and rage of the times. Today Michael Dransfield is one of the most widely read poets of his generation.
This is a brilliant literary study both of Dransfield the poet and of the 1960s as a cultural state. Patricia Dobrez's illuminating narrative not only traces the development of the poet's talents but also explores the poems, re-evaluating them - and the poet's contribution - within a contemporary cultural-studies framework.
Customer Reviews:
Mega-Boring!.......2003-07-08
The most boring book I have ever read. I deeply regret the waste of money. Story of a drug-adict and lousy "poet" told in ten times as much detail as any sane person could possibly need to know. Frankly, I think it a scandal that money was wasted in publishing such garbage.
The author could do with a few lessons in English, too.
Borrrrrring!.......1999-09-08
The terminally boring biography of a talentless poet. Micheal Dransfield and his ilk ruined Australian poetry by glutting the market with tax-payer funded bildge. I look forward to the day when a talented poet receives such lavish treatment.
