A Wonderful book for teens.......2005-12-30

I found this book in my local library when I was a teenager. I loved it so much that a decade later, I both remembered "The Great & Terrible Quest" and recommended it to a younger relative. He loved it so much that decades later, he both remembers it and recommends it to others. Really, how many books can you say this about, decades after you've read them?

This story centers on a young boy, an orphan, who is growing up in the care of a cruel man. The young boy helps a wounded stranger, an act of generosity and kindness, and saves the wounded stranger from his cruel guardian. The stranger is an old man who is suffering memory loss but must desperately complete a very important quest to save their country. The young boy sets off to help the old man with his quest.

"The Great and Terrible Quest" is a wonderful book, exciting and vivid, with a wonderful ending, well worth reading over and over again. This book is still in print, according to the publisher, but appears to not be available through Amazon.com at this time.

This book is currently back in print. I found it for under ten dollars from Sonlight Curriculum. It's my 14 and 10 year old daughters' all-time favorite book. We actually wrote the author, who is over 90, and she very kindly wrote us a lovely letter back. It's a terrific adventure story and really stretches the imagination as you keep wondering how the characters in the book all fit together. The little boy, in his unselfishness and bravery, is a true hero.

More Great than Terrible.......2001-10-26

Why this book has never been re-printed, I'll never know.

Lovett has written a flawless tale of adventure soaked in mystery, but without resorting to the magic and wizardy that normally leaves a person unable to identify with the characters.

The story is about a young boy named Trad, his (evil) taskmaster of a guardian, and the burning desire to find out where he truly belongs. It begins when he finds an old, wounded soldier while out one afternoon. Badly injured and without memory, Trad joins him in a quest to find out who they both really are. Who the soldier turns out to be and how, ultimately, he is connected to Trad makes for a story that is both deep and original, avoiding all of the jaded plots of its genre.

A very serious story for the age group it deals with, it proves that a good childrens book can hold its own without having to be sophpomoric. Mature themes (duty, honor, friendship) are presented in a digestable format that give the book far more meaning and substance than its candy-coated counterparts.

If you have a maturing child at home, or are a child at heart, pick the book up. While difficult to find, if you can get a copy for under $20, its well worth the money.

I couldn't ask for a better reference ~ except wishing for an update from '97 until production ceased. This book is the most complete I've seen. Individual detailed descriptions include Perthshire's ID number, and many explanatory comments. The quality of the photographs is clear, crisp, and colors are true to actual weights. Most importantly, photos are large enough to show small details. Even if you never intend to buy a paperweight, this book is fascinating, educational and beautiful. Forty pages provide general information and 155 pages describe and illustrate the paperweights. There is a hardcover version, but the quality of this softcover, with its glossy paper, is certainly all I could ever need. I highly recommend this book for experienced collectors ~ and it is essential for novices!

Caution; a Dangerous Breed.......2007-04-08

I don't know about this book, but I have owned two Canaan dogs. One was a male and one was a female. Owning one of these dogs is about like owning a wolf-hybrid. These are not house pets. In the middle east, where they are used as herders, they are not pets, more like half-wild dogs that protect the flocks. Our dogs would attack any dog they saw, on or off their property. They were harder to control than any other dog I have come across. The female was a nicer, calmer, and overall easier dog, but she was extremely territorial, and even attacked our other female dog repeatedly. She was more vicious than the pitt bull/ german shepherd I own. I am not against the breed. They are very intelegent, cunning, animals, but I would just like to warn potential owners that these dogs are not completely domesticated. Please be careful with them; my dogs had to be put down because they attacked a friend's four year old daughter right in front of me, with no provocation. I would just warn you to watch them around your children.

Novice owners look elsewhere.......2004-08-09

This book was written by a fairly knowledgeable dog person who has never pwned a Canaan Dog. You get about what you'd expect from that combo: basically okay but repeating inaccuracies and missing nuances she had no frame of reference to assess. Some errors are important only to breed afficianados, but others are more general: microchips are the size of a grain of rice, not a kernal of corn (ouch!). Not all tapeworms are carried by fleas. There are no microfilaria (heartworm larvae) visible in the illustration on page 119... The book does contain much good information but unfortunately the novice is going to have a difficult time sorting the wheat from the chaff. The photos are lovely but I agree with other reviewers' comments that it would be nice to have included more dogs, especially showing all color patterns and correct color patterns.

Good Book for First Time Owners.......2004-05-04

I do not know how the author researched this book and where she got her information, but there is really only one statement in the book I disagree with, and that is where she says that a Canaan Dog is prone to bite. THIS IS NOT TRUE. In the very early days there were some few people-aggressive Canaan Dogs, but they were the source of bad stories about the breed which took a long time to overcome. Other than this one misrepresentation, the book does a good job of introducing a first-time owner to the breed. It should be a companion to the information received from a breeder and not the sole source of information. The photos are lovely, but present the type favoured in all the rest of the world except the US - the only reason I can see for the prior reviews complaint about them.

Misrepresents the Canaan Dog Breed.......2003-10-23

I found the information to be inaccurate and incorrect, both in text and photographs. If the author researched this breed you can hardly tell. I would not and will not recommend this book to anyone. The other two books are far better. Bottom line, don't waste your money here.

Poor representation of the Canaan Dog.......2003-10-09

This book is, by far, the worst representation of a Canaan Dog I have read. As a breed fancier I would NOT recommend this book to anyone interested in the breed as it paints a very poor picture of our breed as well as diseminating blatantly incorrect information on the breed history. It is obvious the author does not know the breed well and randomly inserted out of context comments into a standard text on dogs. Also, being published in the United States and referring heavily to the AKC breed standard, one would think that dogs bred in America would be pictured. As it is, approximately 60% of the photos in this book are of the same two dogs - both of which were bred outside the U.S. The dog that dominates most of the photos in the book, while appearing acceptable in conformation & type, is tri-colored and would be disqualified from competition according to most breed standards. Photos of various dogs from the United States as well from abroad would have been a more accurate presentation of the breed. I have several Canaan Dogs and this book would have made me not want one. I strongly urge readers to choose one of the other two books on Canaan Dogs available through amazon.com.

Best text on Canaan Dogs.......2003-10-04

Myrna Shiboleth is the world's leading authority on Canaan Dogs. Having worked with the breed's founder (Dr. Menzel), owning the largest Canaan Dog kennel in Israel, having bred and shown to their championships in many countries innumerable Canaans, being an esteemed international dog shows judge herself, and a professional animal behaviorist, give her a unique perspective and qualification to write about this breed.

The result is this authoritative book on Canaan Dogs, still the more complete book available on the breed. This text is a "must" for every person seriously interested in the breed, but it is accessible to newcomers as well. The only possible fault I find with this book is that with the exception of the covers, all the photos are in B&W. Perhaps a future edition will bring in colors?

A must for Canaan Dog owners and breeders.......2000-09-12

This book is written by the world's leading authority on Canaan Dogs. The collection of photos alone is invaluable, depicting early dogs as well as those more recent. The information on feral and Bedouin-owned Canaan Dogs can not be found elsewhere. The information on breeders is less useful because it constantly needs to be updated. If you are interested in the breed, or pariah dogs in general, you need this book.

Nice Photos. Detail is lacking on the Drs. Menzel and their creation/development of this breed and their studies on pariah dogs. Would like to see discussion in the book on how it came to be to have 2 different types of Canaan Dogs.

Kingsbury writes of creating habitat for insects and hedgehogs as well as people, of selecting plants for your soil and water conditions. (He even writes on what grows best in gravel and in bogs.) This book encourages gardeners to be curious and to experiment. It is for those artists who create with plants.

Perfect for the small garden.......2005-05-14

I have a townhouse and very little room to garden, but I've long desired to plan a garden that would blend in with the woods that back up to our house. This book has given me my inspiration and has cemented my decision to plan a garden that will be both natural, peaceful and beautiful. It may take a while, but I'll do it thanks to this book. Have no garden space at all? They even cover that in the "Natural Gardening without a Garden".

Short book, big on landscape tips.......2001-12-26

Despite being less than a hundred pages, LANDSCAPING IN SMALL SPACES presents many good ideas and perspectives about bringing out the best of small gardens. I liked the viewpoint that even large properties can include small garden rooms. Anyone can benefit from this book.

All of the photos carry their weight in illustrating a point. Many are inspirational & some of gardens so beautiful I wanted to see more of the landscape. I liked the "Four Views of One Garden" segment where four landscape architects from different parts of the country designed different gardens for the same nondescript, small backyard. The results were, as expected, very different and interesting in their own ways. And, there were good ideas in each design worth considering for my own garden.

This book presents brief overviews of many concepts that contribute to "making the most of a limited area" to quote the subtitle. However, I wanted to know more about various techniques and found the brevity frustrating. But, all in all, this book is a good reference for tips on landscaping a small area.

I wish I'd had this book years ago. Not only does it have wonderful photos and ideas, it's a great instruction book for explaining how to deal with small garden areas and what your goals might be. It goes into detail on how to make the space appear larger, what tricks of the eye, plants and techniques should be used to create the effect you want.

Each of the two reconstructed "oldest texts" of the intertestamental work, Joseph and Aseneth, presents a consistent picture with a coherent theology, but there are considerable differences between them. The image of women in each case serves to crystallise these differences, and their analysis opens a window not only on the texts but also on their social contexts. The author develops a method which allows close study of ancient literary images of women and of their effects on ancient readers. It is shown that the different images portrayed in the two versions correspond to differing trends in the pagan and Jewish environment and in Jewish-Hellenistic interpretations of the Bible. A controversy of social and theological importance emerges. FR Dieser Band macht sich die Existenz zweier vor allem im Umfang stark differierender Rekonstruktionen des "altesten erreichbaren Textes" von Joseph und Aseneth zunutze.
