Book Description
Land Use and Society: Geography, Law, and Public Policy examines the history, current practice, and unmet needs of land use planning and regulation in the United States. Rutherford H. Platt, a geographer and lawyer with over twenty-five years experience in research, teaching, and consulting on land use policy, recounts the evolution of land use management and regulation from its early roots in English common law to contemporary legal approaches and constitutional issues. Topics covered include:
- the interaction of geography and law in land use policy
- historic development of response to urban problems in the nineteenth century
- important land use legal cases in the United States over the past century, including current takings law
- strengths and weaknesses of American experience with zoning laws and related measures
- techniques employed by state and local governments to steer private developers into responsible growth practices
- the protection of wetlands, floodplains, coastal zones, and agricultural areas
- what has been accomplished and what remains inadequately addressed in contemporary urban land use management
Throughout, the author argues that rational planning and controlled exploitation of natural resources are hindered by fragmented jurisdictions of federal, state, local, and municipal regulatory bodies.

ultimate montana atlas.......2007-04-12
My wife and I live in Montana and love to explore the small towns and out of the way places here. This book has been a great help in our trips and explorations. We particularly enjoy the historical explanations related to the various areas, as well as appropriate recommendations regarding sights to see, restaurants, outdoor activities, road quality and more. There are very good sections about Glacier and Yellowstone that are helpful in planning a visit to these wonderful parks. If you are going to visit Montana, I would recommend you pick this book up before your visit.
A remarkable resource.......2007-04-12
This book is a wonderful resourse for anyone visiting, touring, or considering re-locating to Montana. It is conveniently divided into geographic sections and provides lodging, restaurants, attractions, hiking trails, campsites, weather, driving distance, you name it...it's in this book. There are photos of almost every place mentioned. It's a real must for anyone taking a leisurly tour of Montana. I highly recommend this atlas.
The all-in-one, Everything, Super Pages of Montana Vacation and Travel.......2007-04-05
If you actually own a copy of this book, you have to laugh at the critical reviews below. They were obviously written by people who have never even opened the book, let alone actually own a copy. Maybe other publishers can't compete with this guide, so they bash it instead. I read those and just had to have a say. I have a third copy of the book and am getting a fourth because I use them to death. If there was a better guide, I would buy it. But I would have to buy ten or more of the other guides in print to get everything that I find in this one volume. Plus there's stuff this book has that no one else covers.
Glorified yellow pages?? If that's what you call a complete, east to west, north to south directory of every travel and vacation related subject. I'm not sure why that's a bad thing. I like the fact that the publisher lists every place to sleep in the state. The only places I found missing were places that opened after my edition of the book was published. I like the fact that they list every single eating spot, from gourmet, $50/plate bistros, to the nearest fast food spot. Every other guide I've found on the state handpicks a few upscale places and tries to convince us that they are the only place to eat or sleep. I want to know all my choices, I want to know how to find them, and I don't want the author injecting their snooty opinion into who gets in and who doesn't. Show me everything and let me decide.
Besides listing every hotel, if you'd rather sleep somewhere "different", they list hundreds of bed and breakfasts, hundreds of vacation homes and cabins, hundreds of guest ranches and resorts, and every public and private campground in the state. If you're carrying your shelter with you, there's not a legal place to pitch a tent or park an RV they missed... except maybe the Wal-Mart parking lots. The book is worth the price alone just for the campground listings. And this is the only book I've found that lists all of the Forest Service cabins. I wrote the Forest Service for info on the cabins and they sent me exactly what is in this book. These cabins are the best-kept secret in Montana, and a great experience. Every other guide book on Montana either gives them only passing mention, or ignores them completely.
There are well over a hundred maps in this guide (which works out to a map every 5 pages or so), with maps for towns so small you wonder why they bothered to make one. In the Glacier Park area, I counted over 20 maps. There are maps of the park itself and several trail maps. And the section on Yellowstone Park is just as comprehensive with lots of maps.
Need stuff to plan your day's activities? If you can't plan out of this guide, then nothing is going to help you. I've been using one edition or the other of this guide to plan my trips, and I've only found one thing that the author missed in the first edition. They added it in the second edition. I actually consider it a challenge, while exploring the state, to find something worth slowing down for that these authors left out. If the authors are at fault for anything, it is for giving away all the secret attractions in the state that only the locals knew about before. While the other guide books focus on the tourist-heavy western part of the state, the Ultimate people give every square inch of the state equal attention. They tell you about every ghost town, hot springs and roadside curiosity there is. The way the book is organized, once you find where you are on the map, you will know what there is immediately around you, whether it's food, lodging, attractions, history of the area, historical sites, etc. There are so many hikes and scenic drives in here it would take years to do them all.
There is advertising in the book. Thank goodness for that. The advertisers allow this book to be such a great value. Logically a book with five times as much content and information should sell for five times what the other guide books sell for. In fact, it sells for the same price give or take a dollar. Clearly the advertising makes that possible.
I think the choice is clear. You can get this guide and be done with it. Everything you need is in here, everything. Or you can load up on all the other incomplete guides and spend more time digging through them for barebones information and spend more time finding what you need than you actually spend on your trip. Choose wisely.

Sudden need to understand Montana.......2007-04-04
When our daughter was accepted at Montana State University in Bozeman and several of our friends chose Montana for their retirement homes, we realized we needed to learn a great deal more than where the Interstate would take us. The greatest value of the book (The Ultimate Montana Atlas and Travel Encyclopedia) was not the efficiency it provided in getting to Bozeman but was in the enjoyment it gave us in returning home. That part of the trip was more delightful because of the Doughertys' intimate knowledge of what was on our route and their ability to describe it. We spent an extra 2 days getting home and enjoyed every mile of it. We have already planned the next return trip.

Book Description
As design absorbs the lesson of providing easy access to products and services for people with visual and physical impairments, the notion of "inclusive design" arrives at the top of the agenda; the idea that design should not cater exclusively for those with disabilities, nor should it ignore them. Inclusive design means design for all.
Concentrating on the issues surrounding design with low vision in mind, In Sight puts these demands in a clear and understandable light for the working designer, and deals with the legislation that designers must now incorporate into their work.
This groundbreaking book, the first to deal in an accessible but highly informative way with the area of visual impairment, is an essential text for every practicing designer.
Book Description
In Aint Misbehavin, applied animal behaviour pioneer John C. Wright, Ph.D., takes the guesswork out of pet behaviour problems. Dr. Wright shows readers how to diagnose causes and provides effective, easy-to-follow solutions to hundreds of common misbehaviours.
Customer Reviews:
Sound advice.......2002-02-07
Hearing Dr. Wright speak, I bought this book on the spot. Dr. Wright does a great job applying behavior principles to common situations, in language non-behaviorists can understand.
You'll take away from his book the idea that you should look at your own unique pet in your own unique circumstances to pinpoint any behavior problems you may be having, letting just exactly what is happening, when, and where help you guess _why_. If you can guess the why, you can plan a way to intervene that will be effective -- and you'll learn how best to decide if you are indeed being effective.
Dr. Wright also emphasizes assessing the mood of your dog and changing a bad mood to a good one in order to facilitate behavior change. He further gives good research-based information about reading dogs' body language and how to respond if a dog is fearful, aggressive, etc.
But Ain't Misbehavin' doesn't just address problems such as aggression or separation anxiety. On the contrary, how to build a positive relationship with your pet (so problems don't appear) is a primary focus.
In sum, a really good dog AND CAT training book that both gives you guidelines for living happily with your pet and offers suggestions for responding to serious problems.

Book Description
The invention of flight craft heavier than air counts among humankind's defining achievements. In this book, aviation engineer and historian John D. Anderson, Jr., offers a concise and engaging account of the technical developments that anticipated the Wright brothers' successful first flight on December 17, 1903. While the accomplishments of the Wrights have become legendary, we do well to remember that they inherited a body of aerodynamics knowledge and flying machine technology. How much did they draw upon this legacy? Did it prove useful or lead to dead ends?
Beginning with the earliest attempts at flight, Anderson explains how Leonardo daVinci first began to grasp the concepts of lift and drag which would be essential to the invention of powered flight. He describes the many failed efforts of the so-called "tower jumpers," from Benedictine monk Oliver of Malmesbury in 1022 to the eighteenth-century Marquis de Bacqueville. He tells the fascinating story of aviation pioneers such as Sir George Cayley, who in a stroke of genius first proposed the modern design of a fixed-wing craft with a fuselage and horizontal and vertical tail surfaces in 1799, and William Samuel Henson, a lace-making engineer whose ambitious "aerial steam carriage" was patented in 1842 but never built. Anderson describes the groundbreaking nineteenth-century laboratory experiments in fluid dynamics, the building of the world's first wind tunnel in 1870, and the key contributions of various scientists and inventors in such areas as propulsion (propellers, not flapping wings) and wing design (curved, not flat). He also explains the crucial contributions to the science of aerodynamics by the German engineer Otto Lilienthal, later praised by the Wrights as their "most important" predecessor.
In telling the dramatic story of the Wright brothers' many experiments at Kitty Hawk as they raced to become the first in flight, Anderson shows how the brothers succeeded where others failed by taking the best of early technology and building upon it using a carefully planned, step-by-step experimental approach. (They recognized, for example, that it was necessary to become a skilled glider pilot before attempting powered flight.) With vintage photographs and informative diagrams to enhance the text, Inventing Flight will interest anyone who has ever wondered what lies behind the miracle of flight.

If you have a home, an apartment, a garden, or a pet (or, in some cases, housemates or tenants), you've probably got pests. And if you want to control pests, there's no need to poison yourself. While the Green Revolution and DDT and other pesticides dominated the world of agribusiness, thoughtful scientists world-wide were simultanously and silently working on "Integrated Pest Management", which is often as effective as pesticides at reducing or eliminating pests. From ridding your apartment of cockroaches to dealing with the regional deforestation threats of Gypsy Moths, this is the authoritative book on how to control pests by using the natural mechanisms of control that have kept our planet from being savaged, prior to our human disruptions.

Amazon Needs to review some of these reviews.......2004-01-20
Ignore the two inane reviews below and read the others. You'll see what I mean....
Helpful guide for causing the least harm.......2002-01-14
Despite the opinions of another of the book's reviewers, many responsible, ... homeowners and gardeners have the need to sanely deal with pest infestations. This is the best book for learning about the least toxic and often the most humane way of dealing with pest problems. I have used it for my own home and garden and also as a Master Gardener recommending solutions for other gardeners. I highly recommend it.
an essential reference.......2001-09-20
I answer garden questions (and ones about pest problems) for a living, and I'd be lost without my wonderful dog-eared copy of this book. It is probably responsible for TONS of toxic chemicals NOT being used by paniced homeowners, and belongs in EVERY home.
Beautifully balanced book.......2001-06-23
This book is a wonderful resource for anyone who cares about balancing their own needs as residents of the planet with the needs of all the bugs out there. Insects are introduced, their contributions to their ecosystem detailed, possible ways of controlling them discussed where that is needed, and final, more dire solutions are available where needed. A great resource for those who want their pest control to be as little destructive as possible, and in many cases this is also what is most effective. A good resource to have on hand.
Essential reference for any home owner or renter........1998-08-07
A detailed, well-indexed reference dealing with pests from lice to rats. This is a how-to book as well as a general reference, and although Common-Sense Pest Control is not always the most pleasant reading, it is a godsend to anyone in the trenches. The authors approach is scientific and non-alarmist, with an emphasis on least-toxic solutions. Excellent illustrations. An example of their style: "Few pest problems cause more panic and premature decisions among home owners than those involving wood-destroying insects such as carpenter ants or termites... Whatever the reason, you should not feel pressured. You have plenty of time to find the least-toxic treatment and decide whether you want to do some of the work yourself and contract out the rest to a professional or turn over the entire job to a professional."

Book Description
This second edition of Dr Nasir's well-received and original work has been thoroughly revised and updated to take account of all legal developments up to 1994. It addresses the legal rights and obligations of women under the Shari'a and under modern Arab Islamic legislation, and as such retains a prominent and perhaps unique position in the literature. Thoroughly researched and systematically laid out, this work contains a particularly valuable section on marriage. It is an essential text for legal practitioners and scholars, as well as those concerned with matters of human rights, women and the family.
Customer Reviews:
Highly Recommended.......2007-08-24
As a theatre director, I have read a lot of books about other directors and stagecraft, and far fewer about the intimate work of the actor. I never got around to making a close study of voice until now, and FTNV has been a wonderful revelation for me.
Not only is Linklater's work imagistically strong and physically clear, but the thoughtful and careful way she approaches "release" seems a metaphor that extends well beyond the borders of the voice. It has inspired me in all facets of my artistic work. Wonderful, insightful, highly recommended.
This new and expanded 2nd edition is a gem........2007-08-20
This new and expanded second edition is a gem. Hundreds of pages of clear, easy to follow exercises and commentary are presented in a step-by-step format that allows actors (and speakers in general) to progress at their own pace no matter what their level of experience. The vocal exploration is made even more enjoyable by the lighthearted and effective drawings found throughout. This is required reading for anyone interested in developing a more free and expressive vocal instrument.
Outstanding, Practical and Thorough.......2007-08-14
As a teacher, I
find this new edition invaluable for students of all levels. It is complete, available and thorough. After working with many different books on voice, this book is the one I keep coming back to. My students love it.
The exercises are specific and continually return the student to the purpose of developing their voice- communication and the revelation of thought and feeling.
Just goes to show you CAN improve on a classic........2007-08-13
The original edition rightly cast Linklater as a leading figure in the world of voice training for actors and professional speakers. This edition is clearer, more specific, more exciting and more accessible. Greatly expanded, with useful (and diverse) illustrations, the text moves easily from theory to practice, with detailed exercises, musings, and references to a broad range of disciplines.
While nothing can substitute for learning this discipline from a qualified teacher, this book serves as an excellent road guide and reminder/refresher for the serious student or teacher.
As a professional linguist I can also vouch for the sound scientific grounding and accuracy of the discussion of the vocal process, which is all too often either lacking from dramatic voice work or else is so detailed that the student gets mired in anatomical minutiae and loses sight of the practical goal. Linklater ingeniously balances the science and art of voice in this improved classic.
Better Than Ever!.......2007-08-13
I've been using the earlier edition of Linklater's book for years. The new edition is better than ever!! I especially like the commentaries in each section and the new illustrations. Whether you've been teaching Linklater's technique for years or new to the work, this new edition makes it all even more accessible than ever.
Customer Reviews:
A Good Technique for Singers Too.......2005-02-08
The techniques in this book are essential to actors, speakers, and singers alike. I am a classical singer with a Master's degree in voice and many years and varieties of voice teaching, learning and performance experience. Engaging Kirsten Linklater's techniques helped to "fill in the blanks" of my technique, and make vocal production (and breathing for speech and song) freer, less manipulated and more natural. It has proven itself time and again in application with my students of many genres as well. The basis of the Linklater technique in freeing and centering the voice is so simple that it's hard to trust -- but it works. I can imagine the book being difficult to digest without any previous vocal pedagogy and/or Linklater experience however.
Hard to Read.......2001-09-10
This book is very hard to read. I don't mean the subject matter - that is dense and complicated, but I think well explained. In any case, anyone reading this book is going to be highly motivated to learn from it and willing to work at understanding the material. What I found insurmountably difficult, though, is the appallingly small, faint, irregular print (it looks like it was reproduced on a 1970's Xerox copier) and the HORRIBLE illustrations. Every time I pick up this book - and my magnifying glass - I know I am in for a difficult difficult time. Are there any plans for a nice clear reprint? I would definitely be interested in getting one.
Linklater's method frees the voice to create catharthis........1999-11-17
I am absolutely amazed with the progress I have made this semester in my Stage Voice class which utilizes the Linklater method. When I began her method two months ago, I had problems with articulation, projection, and breathing. In addition to that, my muscles in my throat had atrophied to the point that I was a AltoII in vocal range. However, with persistent work with her method, my vocal range is between SopranoII and AltoII, and I can project and articulate my words with no problem. Indeed, I am currently in a mainstage production at my school that demands I use a West Indies accent. Because I have learned to "free the voice" my performances have literally knocked my audience dead. People just can't believe the change! Run, don't walk to buy this book.
Free the mind, body and soul!.......1999-09-25
Reading this book has helped me break away from the bad habits used in everyday speech in our society. It frees the body and soul along with the voice. The only thing better than reading this book and using the Linklater Technique is having Kristen teach you the technique herself. I was lucky enough to have that experience years after I bought the book.
Freeing the... is extraordinarily helpful for new actors........1999-09-22
This book is an amazing resource for those who are looking to become more self aware in terms of breath and vocal control. Many teachers incorporate some of Linklater's philosophy and method -- both found in this book -- into their particular teaching of acting method and self freeing vocalization. The drawings in the book may be a little difficult to get past, but this book is overall an incredible place to find ways of doing just what the title suggests.
