I would not call Wim Crouwel little-known. He gets talked about and lauded quite a bit. He has even been called one of the most influencial designers of this century.
It's hard to believe he was doing the stuff he was doing years ago.
great experimental typography.......2004-05-10
this book is a very interesting look at a relatively unknown typeface designer. he starts out using traditional fonts (akzidenz, Helvetica) and now creates fonts based on matrices and pixels. beyond that, his interview explains why he did things the way he did.
a great book for anybody interested in typefaces and typographic layouts. the book layout is itself a little weird (strange margin sixes...) but overall is very clean and very effective.

A collection of substantial literary material from one of the best voices of dissidence & nonconformism;gems that howl,speak & whisper from the side of literatures remorseless tongue.Personal faves here are the excerpt from Alexander Trocchi's novel "Cains Book";Octavio Paz's essay;Robert Coover's "The Square Shooter & The Saint";Ginsberg's "Howl" of course;Kerouac's "October In The Railroad Earth",the interview on Louis-Ferdinand Celine;& many more.Not only is this good reading material to ingest differentiating one from the usual academic blah that turn a lot off to literature;it also familiarizes oneself to a lot of talented & great authors that one may not be aware of if not for this impressive book.

If you have ever been to a Baltimore Orioles game in old Memorial Stadium or Camden Yards this book is a must. Rex Barney is the only ex major league player to serve as the PA man for a major league team.He tells his life story from his no hitter when he pitched for the Brooklyn Dodgers against the NY Giants to his days in the booth as the PA man for the Orioles. Thank youuuuuu Rex for a great book.

An excellent condensation of a classic comic strip.......1999-11-07
Billy DeBeck began,with Barney Google,a chronicle of American lifestyle in the 1920s-which was marked by daring,willingness to take risks and cheerful optomism.Barney Google had some times at the race track,with Sparky doing his best at races-and even winning them on occasion.There were some fascinating stories well-worth reprinting in their entirty.DeBeck's Bughouse Fables and Bunky are also represented.(Learn what OKMNX means.) As time went on,especialy during the Depression, the stories took a different slant.Barney speant much time out of America,either in the Mideast or in the Carribean.When he did return to America,it was to inherited property in the Ozarks.Then he befriended Snuffy Smith,who took center-stage more and more as time went on. Although Billy DeBeck never completely forgot Barney Google,his assistant and successor,country boy Fred Laswell,found it much easier to concentrate on Snuffy an' his kin an' pals.As a result Barney Google became an occasional visitor in what is now Snuffy's territory.Yet it is because of Laswell's own brand of country-charm that the strip has lasted this long. It is easy to think of Billy DeBeck's Barney Google(1919-1934),DeBeck and Laswell's Barney Google and Snuffy Smith(1935-1942)and Fred Laswell's Snuffy Smith(1943-present)as seperate strips unto themselves.

Postwar in a nutshell.......1999-11-24
McComas and Tuohy put together a great book on the Lionel postwar production. It may not be as detailed as the Greenberg books but for the money it is a great buy. There are plenty of great pictures and detailed information on most of Lionel's postwar production. Volune IV "Lionel 1970-1980" is just as good.
