Mr. George is a gray squirrel who lives in a beautiful park. When he finds an attractive doll hat made of bright red felt, Mr. George decides that he could use it to gather seeds and nuts. He is thrilled to discover that the hat fits him perfectly, and his animal friends agree that it enhances his appearance. After wearing the hat all spring, this kind and generous squirrel gives it to a tiny bird who needs a nest.
Unfortunately, this beautifully illustrated story lacked a competent editor. The text is marred by this grammatical error: "Then Mr. George thought, "Maybe it's a groundhog's hat." But no, what would a groundhog do with a hat? It wouldn't fit THEIR large round head and the groundhog would surely get it dirty going underground." (Emphasis mine.)
I hope this error is corrected in a subsequent printing!
Perfect Book For Children 2-8.......2005-07-10
Steven Heigh knits a sweet story focusing on the theme of generosity.
His principal character is a squirrel named Mr. George.
The setting is a quiet park, wherein to his delight, he finds a doll's red hat. He contemplates its many
different uses- should he give it to the rabbit with big ears, to the groundhog or to the chipmunk?
Upon seeing his reflection in a stream of water, he discovers that he can use it
himself! To his delight, all the animals of the park admire him in his red hat!
However, even if Mr. George loves his newfound fame, his heart goes to a
pregnant sparrow that needs the red hat to nurture her brood. With goodness in
his heart Mr. George joyfully presents The Red Hat to her and her babies. As a
result, his neighbors love him even more for his generosity and compassion.
This is a perfect book for children aged 2-8, who have encountered difficulty
learning the concept of sharing. Mr. George's kindness is a excellent example that
will certainly open up their hearts.
Heigh's other talent as an illustrator is just as good as his clear and concise
writing. His illustrations painted in acrylics are tidy, neat and lively. He uses primary
colors to underline the tranquil effects of nature. The red hat in a harmonious
contrast with all the greens of the peaceful park. One can see Mr. Heigh's
love for nature and the outdoors, and I particularly liked the scene on the cover of
the book. On another page, Mr. Heigh wittily strikes Mr. George as Rodin's "The
Thinker".
Children and parents will enjoy reading the serene Mr. George and The Red Hat.
They will undoubtedly recognize all the squirrels in their neighborhood park as
Mr. George! As well, they will readily comprehend the concept of compassion.
The book design by KRBY Creations elevates the end product beyond the ordinary.
It is no wonder that Mr. George and the Red Hat was an award finalist for the
Book of the Year by ForeWord Magazine.

Mr. George and the Red hat is a beautiful book! The illustrations are delightful. You really can imagine yourself among the sun-dappled trees in the park. The scenery is touched with light and soft detail. The colors are rich and warm. You can see the texture of the canvas in the pictures.
The story is equally charming. Mr. George is the neighborhood squirrel. Maybe he lives in your park. One day he finds a red felt doll hat. He imagines which animal it belongs to, a chipmunk perhaps? He finally decides the hat is perfect for him and for helping him collect nuts. The other park animals admire Mr. George and his wonderful hat. In a generous act of kindness, he offers his hat to a young mother bird that needs a home for her babies. It's a perfect new home!
You will just have to wonder if the squirrel you see in the park is Mr. George the generous squirrel.
Beautiful Book- Must Have.......2005-02-04
This is a beautifully illustrated children's book, destined to be a classic. Every child should have a copy in their "library". Terrific for the classroom also. The story is also beautifully written.

I thought the Adventure books were great!(Chatterer the best!)I first started reading them when I was about 7 or 8. I'm now 13 and I still enjoy the books. They really do help kids appreciate nature and most importantly, life. These would be great books for kids ages 5 to 10, I think.
Great animal adventure with life lessons.......2000-04-27
Chatterer the Red Squirrel is a precious animal adventure story that young children will love. While reading it to my 7 year old, my 11 and 13 year olds would inevitably wander into the room. Chatterer is a mischievous little red squirrel. If he's not picking on Shadow the Weasel and learning the hard way what an unruly tongue can do, he's in Farmer Brown's Corn CRib stealing corn. His mischieviousness finally catches up with him and because of his carelessness Farmer Brown's boy traps him. He then becomes a prisoner, although a quite comfortable one. He soon realizes that freedom is much more important than anything else. Throughout the story he learns many life lessons, although they seem small, which we as humans should take to heart. I would highly recommend this book.

Don't leave home without Frommer!.......2007-01-23
Frommer's is always the best travel guide. I have used his guides on all my European travels. I bought this one for my son who went to England after the holidays. He found it very useful; particularly in locating hostels.
A must have for any trip..........2006-11-22
I would recommend this book for any trip to England. I was originally planning on the "BIG" tourist spots but this book opened up an entire new side of England. My friend & I traveled through the Midlands on a canal boat and the book was helpful in finding out about pubs, site and attractions not to mention a grasp of what to expect. I managed to spend 16 days in England for under $2000 (and I ended up paying food, travel and lodging for 2 people) so I think that was a steal considering that included all my holiday gifts for my family!! I am already plannig my next vacation overseas and definitely going to use this series again!!

Yes I know you think you have Adobe Reader for the Pocket PC - it will do you no good; you must have activated DRM to read this title, and DRM is not supported for the Pocket PC.
Shame on Frommer's for requiring a format that can't work on half of the world's PDAs, shame on Amazon for not warning consumers of restrictions in use AND FOR NOT PROVIDING ANY RECOURSE, and finally shame on Adobe for the bizzare non-support of the primary Microsoft OS that these books would otherwise be read upon.
MobiPocket.com here I come. Amazon will never get my e-business again.
The only book I really needed.......2003-04-01
I have the 18th edition of this book, and I have to say, it's the only book I really needed for my 5-day trip to England three years ago. It had information on good, affordable but nice places to stay, the main tourist attractions in each area, and helpful tourist tips. I bought 3 books but ended up only really using this one.

A Remarkable Treatise on a Fascinating Subject.......2000-08-20
I know, I know. People would rather read about movie stars and other famous people. I know this one's not on Oprah's reading list. Initially I was captivated by the cover of the book, but even though I didn't know much about Pinnipeds at the beginning, I found it a highly pleasurable and informative experience to scoot myself right through this book.
I'd like to step past the obvious positive features of Riedman's lovingly created product - lucid, readable, interesting, well constructed - and focus on something a little more subtle. Riedman steps outside the main topic of the book frequently, with illustrative and textual hyperbolations into animal and plant life closely associated or analogous to the Pinnipeds, presumably in an effort to provide a more three-dimensional view of her subject matter. But there's more to it than that. The picture of the dead Great White Shark at Ano Nuevo - winter home to the Northern Elephant Seal - brought home to me the almost innocent wonder with which Riedman views her subject matter. I imagined Riedman pouring over thousands of photographs, and on finding this one, saying "Boy! I've got to put that one in!" I have to admit that, by the time I got to this picture, I was thoroughly hooked as well. And thinking about it further, I could see that the world these fascinating creatures inhabit is truly a different and marvelous place.
To think that before I read this book, I couldn't tell a Seal from a Sea Lion - both dark, blobby bodies floating around in the surf or sunning themselves on a tidal rock. And after reading "The Pinnipeds", I find that this image has expanded so very much more that I feel I can almost picture what the world must be like through the eyes of that Seal Lion on the cover. Now, to have written the book that got me there... Well all I can say is that Marianne Riedman is one lucky person to have been given the opportunity to write this book, highly competent to have take the challenge so well, and above all so very much aware and so keenly fascinated by her subject matter. Well done!
I also want to say a brief word about the talented artists that provided illustrations for this book. Pieter Folkens is a highly skilled technical illustrator, with a love for marine life, and an eye for the detail. He can truly bring his creations to life. I'm less familiar with Irene Campagna, but her efforts in "The Pinnipeds" are also excellent. Both deserve mention here.
The Essential Text on Seals.......2000-06-02
Comprehensive. Well written. Informative. Accessible. ... I can't think of enough positive things to say about this book. Riedman manages to give readers a thorough overview of the biology and habits of sea lions, seals and walruses. The book is encyclopedic in its scope, but you do not have to be a biologist or naturalist to appreciate the details it covers. And then there are the pictures: maps, photos, line drawings and other illustrations help bring to life the various pinnipeds Riedman discusses.
Divided into nine chapters, the book covers their adaptation to life in the sea, their evolution and classification, their ecology, predation, diet and food, mating and social structures, reproduction and life history, maternal care, and communication and learning. And while this is a biological text, the writing is breezy and readable, mixing anecdotes and personal observations with the multitude of facts.
