Book Description
These magnificent and evocative color photos reveal why forests have been a source of inspiration to humankind throughout the ages. The bestselling author of Meeting with Remarkable Trees has chosen 15 "mythic woods," from the famous Sherwood Forest (so unlike its legendary image) to the little-known Valley of the Giants in Tasmania, home to some of the world's tallest trees. Some are huge and ecologically vital, like the Amazon and Canadian rainforests; others are tiny remnants, like the Black Wood of Rannoch. The rich and diverse gallery includes the Petrified Forest of Arizona and the towering underwater groves of the Californian Kelp Forest. If anyone questions the need to nurture and protect Earth's forests, these images offer a supremely eloquent answer.
Customer Reviews:
not great.......2006-03-17
Great fron cover an internal cover, but that is where all the fun stops with this book, unfortunately. The rest of the book consists of strangely chosen and bad quality photographs with lots of huge text. I do not recommend this book for anyone who is looking for a great photograhic book on forests - it is very deceiving!
Slightly disappointing........2005-06-16
I bought this book with the expectation there would be many more detailed photographs in it. Though the photos that were there were stunning to be sure, there were too few of them! More photos, maps to said forests, etc. would have caused me to give this a full five stars.
Green splendour revealed.......2004-11-21
Approximately one third of the earth's land area is covered by forest habitats. Some are well-known, but there are magnificent forest areas that have not gained major attention. Mythic Woods explores the individual character of both familiar and unknown forests on all continents, revealing new worlds of majestic beauty. The forests include:
The Amazon
Black Wood of Rannoch
Sudarban mangrove forests of the Ganges delta
Cloud forests of the Andes
Blue Cedar forest of the Atlas Mountains
Taiga of Northern Russia
Valley of Giants, Tasmania
Mediterranean Maquis and Garigue
Petrified forest of Arizona
Sherwood Forest
Kauri Pine Forest of New Zealand
Baobab woods of Madagascar
Great Bear rainforest of Canada
Ancient rainforest of Cape York Peninsula
The engaging text comes alive through the breath-taking full colour photographs and the book concludes with a Forest Fact File that lists factors such as the Area, Rainfall, Temperature, Access and the most interesting trees and animals for each forest. The absence of maps in a book of this nature is baffling, though. Besides that omission, Mythic Woods is a classy and informative guide to some of the most impressive forests of the world.
Book Description
"A stunning volume" (Time) and the most magnificent book on the world's trees published in years.
The publication of Remarkable Trees of the World took American audiences by storm. Now in a handsome paperback volume with flaps, Thomas Pakenham embarks on a five-year odyssey to most of the temperate and tropical regions of the world to photograph sixty trees of remarkable personality and presence: Dwarfs, Giants, Monuments, and Aliens; the lovingly tended midgets of Japan; the enormous strangler from India; and the 4,700-year "Old Methusalehs." American readers will be fascinated by Pakenham's first examination of North American trees, including the towering Redwoods of Sequoia and Yosemite, the gaunt Joshua Trees of Death Valley and the Bristlecone pines discovered in California's White Mountains.
Many of these trees were already famous-champions by girth, height, volume or age-while others had never previously been caught by the camera. Pakenham's five-year odyssey, sweating it out with a 30 pound Linhof camera and tripod, took him to most of the temperate and many of the tropical regions of the world. Although North American trees dominate this book, Pakenham also trekked to remote regions in Mexico, all over Europe, parts of Asia including Japan, northern and southern Africa, Madagascar, Australia and New Zealand.
Remarkable Trees of the World is a lavish work that will be treasured for generations by all those who marvel at nature. Color photographs throughout.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful book.......2007-09-08
A very nice book, with remarkable trees, however, from the cover I suppose I wrongly assumed they would be beautiful trees. Quite a lot of the book is spent on African trees of a very strange nature, and to my husband's suprise, very little was done on the banyan tree. I was looking forward to large, ancient trees myself. All in all, it is still a wonderful book, it just wasn't what we were expecting.
You Need to See.......2007-08-01
Great Book will enough the wonder hopefully they have it in the school systems or county systems
This is a coffee table book with pictures that impress.......2007-07-28
Trees are grouped by various, sensible categories that other books on trees might neglect: Giants: Gods, Goddesses, Grizzlies; Dwarfs: For Fear of Little Men, In Bondage; Methuselahs: The Living and the Dead, Shrines; Dreams: Prisoners, Aliens, Lovers and Dancers, Snakes and Ladders, Ghosts; and Trees in Peril: Do the Loggers always Win? and Ten Green Bottles. Pakenham's text is great fun to read, as can be viewed from those sectional titles, and individual tree titles such as "Tie up my feet, Darling, and I'll live forever" for the Bonsai tree that is the In Bondage section.
I suppose coffee table books really shouldn't be considered exceptional items to read - view, yes; read, not so much. This is an exception. Tolkien's Ents are invoked for a handful of trees, and rightly so; geography students who get a core borer stuck and (somehow) get permission to cut down what had possibly been the oldest tree in the world just to retrieve it are warned against; and, of course, it is mentioned that any fool can climb a gum tree. I've read this about six times this year, high time I count it officially.
Go gingko go.......2007-03-21
In fall 2006, Lansing's forestry department planted a tiny gingko biloba tree between the sidewalk and the street in front of my house.
It had four and a half branches, all oriented in one plane like the candlesticks in a menorah. You could barely roast a wiener with it.
I scrambled into the house for a book I had bought, by sheer coincidence, the previous day -- Thomas Pakenham's "Remarkable Trees of the World."
Yes! There, sprawling across pages 110 and 111, was a gingko nearly 1,000 years old, still living in Tokyo, measuring 30 feet in girth and 66 feet high.
Pakenham, a British historian with Irish wanderlust and a gentle sense of drama, has traveled the world to photograph and research the history and lore of 60 of the world's most remarkable trees.
This oversize book, just now out in paperback, is so relaxed and un-sensational you picture Pakenham walking from tree to tree, a Haydn string quartet playing in the background, not minding the continents and oceans in between. It's a follow-up to another book that's just as good: "Meetings With Remarkable Trees," in which Packenham confined his wanderings to the British Isles. The response to "Meetings" was so warm that Pakenham packed his bags and expanded his search to global proportions.
Pakenham's style is that of a curious, intelligent pilgrim. He pairs generous full-page or double-page images of his subjects with un-fussy, lightly conversational background information. He clearly respects local lore and legend, but doesn't go overboard with it, nor does he bog the text down in scientific details. The result is almost a set of personality profiles.
The images are spectacular -- given the subject matter, most of them can't help it -- but sensitively chosen and framed, with an eye toward the unique setting, mood and attributes of each tree.
It's a low-key approach, but if this book doesn't awaken your sense of awe, nothing can. That little stick of a gingko in my front yard, for example, belongs to a hyper-ancient species/order/family that predates dinosaurs. Its peculiar lineage (it's related to ferns) is betrayed by unique, fan-shaped leaves that have no central fold.
Of course, trees have their own agenda, and don't care whether they get into a coffee-table book or not (it's tempting to think they'd rather not, insofar as books are made of paper). But it was hard not to think of Pakenham's gargantuan gingko as a thundering encouragement for my little tree's stressed-out, brown-fringed leaves and spindly trunk.
For one thing, Japanese Buddhists believe the gingko, not the Bo tree of India, was the tree under which Buddha found enlightenment.
If lore doesn't thrill, Pakenham serves up history and science. For example, a gingko 800 yards from the epicenter of Hiroshima threw up new sprouts even after the atomic bomb hit.
But enough about gingkos. In this book, the reader will meet a panoply of the world's most amazing creatures: General Sherman, a mega-giant sequoia in California that weights 1,500 tons and is probably the largest living thing on Earth; ancient teapot-shaped African baobabs out of a Dr. Suess illustration; the leaning Italian cypress said to have been planted by St. Francis; wind-lashed cypresses clinging to the rocky California coast; great oaks with hollows where 20 people can sit down to a banquet; bristlecone pines now into their fifth millennium of existence.
Some of these magnificent trees are near roadsides or chained off in parks, all but ignored by passersby. The wonder of this book is that it tunes the mind to the low-frequency, centuries-long chords only these creatures can hear. Looking at trees that have lived the better part of a millennium make you wonder whether there will be a California -- the home of a disproportionate number of these giants -- or a Lansing in 1,000 years.
My bet's on Lansing, which is far less likely to slip into the ocean before my gingko grows up.
satisfied.......2006-11-10
beautiful book. Bought it as a gift for my brother.
I already have a copy for myself.

Essential for train travel.......2007-09-08
In planning a trip for 2008 I have found USA by Rail to be very helpful in deciding routes to criss cross the USA and Canada. Covers a multitude of important subjects in easy armchair reading or to use as a guide in route.
Excellent resource for "trainers".......2007-08-25
I strongly recommend this guide for those who expect to take any substantial Aamtrak trip. We have taken a number of them and I throughly believe this is one of the best guides that is out. Not only does it provide information you can use as the trip progresses, but helps with distances so you can pick the right stop or what train to take while planning your trip. Some of the trains have small, specific brochures that provide similar information, but by the time you have boarded its a little late for the planning advantages. Even then, this book provides more detail than the pamphlets. The route maps alone are worth the price.
USA by Rail.......2007-05-16
Everything you need to plan (or dream about) a vacation across the USA by train!
Great Guide.......2007-04-21
The guide is very informative. It covers the Canadian rail systems, also.
Helpful for potential tourists........2007-02-08
As we intend to travel the USA later in the year (probably travelling by rail) this book answers a lot of the questions that we have before us. There is a comprehensive current (we hope) evaluation of the equipment & facilities, a brief history, & an evaluation of the possible routes, fares etc,.
We wish to travel through the "fall in New England" that we have read about, but have not yet been able to find out when the best time will be & are still researching that.
This book seems to be an ideal companion for that which we propose to do.

New Zealand.

Talking Peace.......2003-07-18
This book is an awesome book because it not only mentions the various conflicts around the world that Americans are unaware of, but it goes into depth about struggles and the interventions by Jimmy Carter to solve these conflicts. This book is an eye-opener to the numerous freedoms and priveleges we often take for granted and that others strive for. Jimmy Carter discusses the attempts of organizations such as the Carter Center and the UNICEF to establish peace and suitable living conditions around the world. Jimmy Carter does not neglect the potential of young Americans and encourages them to do what they can do to make the world a better place for everyone.
Jimmy Carter, a supportive and humanitarian U.S president.......2003-05-12
Talking Peace offers Jimmy Carter's humanitarian views, revealing his supportive and caring character through the actions he performed during presidency years. I was glad to read about a president that becomes truly active in the fight for peace, liberty and health for all people. Jimmy Carter offers Inspiring words that encourage the reader to help the people in need and teaches how to solve conflicts through negotiation in order to avoid war and pursue peace.
Talking Peace.......2000-03-01
Talking Peace was a very informative book that opened my eyes to the unseen levels of government. Jimmy Carter is a great man who presents great principles and thoughts. His compassion for people is shown through his many deeds and works he orchestrates, such as the Atlanta Project. Overall, this book was a great, easy read with many attention grabbers that kept me interested such as the stories about government officials that one would never believe. Out of five stars, I give Jimmy Carter's Talking Peace 3 1/2 stars.
Easy Reading, Infromative Book.......2000-03-01
Talking Peace: A Vision for the Next Generation is an easy reading, informative book. Jimmy Carter is able to present his ideas and many facts in a concise and understandable way. My knowledge of world events and the workings of the Carter Center in Atlanta, Georgia, was greatly enhanced by this book. I now know that the Carter Center is one of the world's leading mediator's between warring countries. If you have a desire to increase your knowledge of the actions nations, especially the United States, are taking to preserve the peace and biodiversity of the planet, and you want to understand some of the conflicts and struggles other countries are undergoing then read this book.
Talking Peace.......2000-03-01
Jimmy Carter's book Talking Peace is phenomenal! He has given so much to our world through the Carter Center. Through his partnership with Habitat for Humanity, many homes have been built, free of cost, for underprivileged families. The way the Carter Center works with other organizations around the world to bring to light the indignities that our neighbors within the global community suffer touches the heart. Everyone has basic human rights and when those are violated we must all join together to stop the problem and bring about change. Through Talking Peace, Mr. Carter expresses his compassion and genuine love for the human soul. It is an excellent book!

a must for all students of design.......2004-01-10
This is a compendium of brief essays by the Director of Design at Philips. It is extremely interesting as a showcase for his thoughtfulness and what goes into the design process at Philips, from electronic minaturization and city lighting to ethical concerns about the environment and even the concerns of developing countries and their (unprofitable) needs. I was truly rivetted by much of it, and saw certain areas of design I knew in new ways while learning about others. The Second volume, FACTS, consists largely of beautiful photos of his group's products. At the very least, I will consider Philips products first now, as I know some of what is behind them.
I would recommend this book to any design student: Philips is not just about profit, but about much much more. Marzano really gets you to think about both how and why products are designed the way that they are and, by extension, we can imagine the type of society and culture that we want in the future. It is a tour de force. As thought, this is truly outstanding and stimulates the appetite for further inquiry - just what a student needs.
That being said, there are many things that the book is not, about which potential readers should know. Marzano does not go into how his design group fits into Philips - as I understand it, it is autonomous from the business units and must sell its ideas to them and I suspect that lots of his ideas get lost in the brutal translation to profit-seeking manufactures. Morover, Marzano evokes rather than systematially develops or analyses his concepts; this is not necessarily a criticism, but the reader will have to seek them elsewhere for more consistent treatment. Finally, Marzano also gets into the public policy arena - arguing that designers should try to communicate their progressive ideas to politicians - which I found a worthy thought but rather vague and even naive on his part.
Warmly recommended.
A Great review of the product design process.......2000-09-12
I find this book to be one of the best recounts of product design methodology written for designers in a designer's language. It goes further than just presenting design theory. In Volume I, the thoughts and theory is presented and in Volume 2 the results of applying the theory are shown. This is not just a book that presents you with a dry theory. It basically tells you the how and the outcome of the design process in two beautifully designed Volumes.

Book Description
The Didache in Context contains an intriguing look into the background of the Didache, exploring the influence of the text upon the development of early Christianity. It offers an insightful collection of essays that have been gathered from the research efforts of numerous biblical and patristic scholars from around the world. The book seeks to explore questions that relate to the composition of the text itself, the history of the role and function of the Didache within early Christian circles, and the influence of the manuscript upon early Christian traditions and trends of thought. In addition to the numerous, individual investigations that are featured here, the collection includes a fresh translation of the text in English and a comprehensive, up-to-date bibliography of literature on the Didache.
Book Description
This is the laugh-out-loud story of two scheming men, Bialystock, a shady producer, and Bloom, his nervous accomplice. Together they come up with the ultimate con: raise more money than needed, produce a show that is bound to flop, and pocket the change. Of course, all best laid plans are subject to be mucked up.

The Producers : The Book, the Lyrics, the story behind the biggest Hit in Broadway History.......2006-02-19
IF you LOVE Mel Brooks. IF you LOVE the stage show " The Producers" . IF you LOVE the music, BUY BUY BUY THIS BOOK. This is a MUST have for ALL "The Producers " fans. This book is the Guide to what is the most stimulating show I have EVER seen.
Based on the process of turning the original " The Producers " ( Gene Wilder ) movie into a Stage show, along with cast selection and music ( The entire score and lyrics By MEL BROOKS . HIMSELF ).
JUST BUY BUY BUY THIS BOOK.
It even tells you how to spell Ullas' 1st name correctly, wow wow wow wow. Got to go , Its almost 11.
Love POWER!.......2005-12-13
On my C.D. list for Christmas is this HILLAROUS C.D. I've always been a weird producer fan thinking that the movie is actually better than the stage show- despite the lack of 1968 songs. This C.D. is annoyingly funny.
"Love Power"has always been my favorite song in the movie- I laugh each time I see it in the movie. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed this Christmas for this wonderful C.D. I'm still a little disappointed that Mel Brooks cut the character and the song from the show.
Although there are only two songs with complete lyrics. This is still a soundtrack that any "Producer" fanatic will enjoy and I personally like the "Springtime For Hitler" song in the movie more than the actual one put into the show. You also catch a glimpse of Mel Brooks voice as the Nazi "Come and be a smartie and join the Nazi party."
By all means hit that buy now button and laugh yourself silly with these two songs!
Lucky enough to remember when this was FUNNY, not kitchy..........2005-02-25
... fodder for the limp-wristed masses.
(PLEASE REMEMBER, THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE CD OF THE ORIGINAL FILM, SO IF YOU HAVE TO RATE ME, BASE IT ON THAT!)
I loved this movie. I watched it at a time when the Vietnam War was waning in in 1975 here in Chicago, as it was playing on WGN TV on the late late late show. Apparently, even the censors were asleep at the time, but God bless em, this was the perfect time to see him. Mel's brand of humor reminds me of a time when they used to use brown paper bags to wrap up the porn in.
It always has been a guilty pleasure to watch this film, laugh at the humor, and sing along with the actors. This CD captures the essence of the film, the heart of his message - it was as if the lyrics, the tone, and the actor's very intonations were possessed by the vision Mel tossed out after looking into himself and at the world when he penned these tunes, and think about it - in the late 60's! Who was confronting racism, gay sexism, and the Jewish question? Secondly, who could do it with such brave humor and didn't fear the reprocussions?
This CD contains over a dozen tracks of spoken lines from the film, and to listen to Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder's interaction witrh the wonderful diologue is to listen to the genius of Mel Brooks' zenith of comedy. In this CD is also included the true ability Mel had in making his special brand of comedy work - it was simply to make it as campy as hell by including MUSICAL NUMBERS ABOUT THE HOLOCAUST! Yes, I was laughing about Hitler, and Goebbels ( "I loves my little joe") and yes, I was shocked at first, but who wasn't?
This CD of the movie is giving us some of the greatest parody tunes of ALL TIME - "Springtime For Hitler," "Prisoners Of Love," "Love Power," and the spoken word of Zero Mostel - ULLLLLLLLLLLLLLLA! ('I met her at the public library.') I can listen to this CD in the car, at home, ANYWHERE.
(I can also watch this film on DVD - a bit dated, yes, but it represents a time when this was still edgy - but I will stand by this and gladly watch this over and over til it cracks.)
On a personal note: I am saddened at what Mel Brooks did with what I consider to be one of his all-time masterpieces, the holy trilogy of his genius being "the Producers" followed by "Young Frankenstein" and of course the gem on his cap, "Blazing Saddles." He will NEVER be able to top himself, because once you've been to the mountaintop, how can you go anu higher?
Now you can cry your little effiminate hearts out by my words and soothe yourself by going to pay ANOTHER $300 a ticket (or whatever it is) to watch the massive - and strangely, from what I have been told, SAFE - re-working of his anti-war, anti- anti-Semitic, anti-greed film, but I LOVED the film, and I love this soundtrack.
I am a purist, and I will not compromise, even if Zero Mostel came back from the dead and screamed "HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLP" into my ear!
PLEASE, before you buy the CD of book of the making of some play that will be forgotten in a year, because Broad Way is fickle like that - buy this CD and LISTEN, and laugh, and to rememeber a time when anyone could go out and try to be daring, try and amaze, listen to every second of this CD - I own a copy, and heartily endorse it!
Back then his 'scheme' would have worked to ripoff the backers. Now? If Mel's play had crashed, he could have written it off, and corporate sponsorship would have footed the bill.
Buy the CD, and save your soul.
Delightful!.......2004-04-30
"The Producers: The Book, Lyrics, and Story Behind the Biggest Hit in Broadway History!" is such a colorfully fun book. It goes through the excruciating brainstorming process, right through opening night and the actual script. The pictures are so vibrant and you can just hear the actors saying the lines on the page. The handwritten notes on the side of the pages are interesting and catching. This book is perfect for fans of the show and Broadway. I recommend.
Great!.......2003-01-15
Great insight into the making of this show! I think it helps to have seen the show before I read the book because then some of the jokes aren't spoiled. I would also recommed "A Year with The Producers" written by Jefrey Denman. It's an even better behind-the-scenes look into the creation of the show from a chorus members point of view.

I bought this book because a neighbor of ours said it was the name of the strange tree that is in our front yard and I thought it would give me some information about the tree. After reading the book I realized it has nothing to do with the actual Sausage tree. On the other hand it is one of the best depictions of times during the depression era I have ever read. I have sent this book to my oldest granddaughter, and asked her to save it for the other grands. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to get to their roots. I live in the USA but our fathers and mothers all over the world suffered a time that we will never know (God williing).
