More than 300 species of trees are found in the United States and Canada west of the Rocky Mountains, some introduced from other continents but many native to the region. This handsome guidebook covers them all, with photographs that enable identification by easily discernible characteristics: by, for example, the shape of the leaf or needle, by the fruit, or by the flower or cone. The photographs are linked to texts that describe a tree's physical characteristics, habitat, and range. Some of the trees covered in this volume are exceedingly rare, such as the Monterey pine; others are locally abundant but limited in range, such as the Joshua tree; still others, such as the quaking aspen, are widespread. This guidebook is an essential addition to any western outdoor enthusiast's collection. --Gregory McNamee

Book Description

All 933 identification pictures are full-color photos of significant details of virtually all native trees and many cultivated species as you see them in their natural habitat.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book !!!.......2006-11-03

These Audubon books are the best ones for learning about the subject matter, ie: trees. Colored pictures are a MUST and these books have pictures that allow you to identify your tree easily. I have purchased a number of them over the years and will do so in the future.

5 out of 5 stars North American trees, West........2004-12-14

If your going to be stuffing your field guide into your pocket, glove box, daypack or backpack, the "turtleback" binding used by Audubon is perfect. Personally, I don't use it that way. When I encounter a species I cannot identify, I take notes (usually of the mental variety) -- leaf characteristics, bark characteristics, size, form, habitat, seeds, flowers, etc. -- and identify it when I return home. The photos and drawings in this volume are generally excellent. So far as I can recall, the Audubon guide has yet to fail me. It doesn't include very many introduced (non-native) trees, that's not it's purpose, of course, so it may not help you identify the trees that have been planted in your yard. The Sunset Western Garden Book, or perhaps your local nurseryman, will fit that niche.
Could the book be better? Well, the obvious answer is always yes, I suppose, but I don't know how. Would some kind of a 'flow-chart' for identifying specimens improve this edition? Well, there is one, created quiet simply in the way the book is organized; refer to the "How to Use this Guide" section in the front. I won't claim to be a connoisseur of guidebooks, but this one has worked very nicely for me for several years and I recommend it without hesitation.

1 out of 5 stars Dissappointing: Very hard to identify unknown trees.......2004-11-29

I spent $20 on this at a local bookstore (that was a mistake: it is only $14 here on Amazon) and got it home and went into my backyard. An hour later, I was only able to identify one of the three trees in the yard.

I got the book because it had the Audobon name, and it included some sharp color photos. I should have got the Peterson guide instead.

What the Audobon book is missing is an algorithm or process to identify an unknown tree (they call this "differential diagnosis" in medicine). I was expecting something like: "If it has 5 needles per cluster turn to page 45, if it has grey bark turn to page 64, etc" until you pinpoint your tree.

I would even be happy if it had some illustrations like Silbeys bird book ... with arrows pointing to the discriminating features that distinguish the tree from similar trees.

But in the Audobon book, the reader is expected to browse thru dozens of photos and try to match your tree to the photo. But SURPRISE, the photos of similar trees all look alike and what then? You are expected to browse the the dense textual (!) descriptions and flip back and forth reading minutae like "two white strips on the undersides of the needles"

How about some color illustrations? How about a list of similar trees a given tree is often confused with? How about a handful of distinguishing characteristics of each tree?

Try Petersons book instead!

4 out of 5 stars Quite reliable for outdoor travellers........2004-07-11

The Audubon Guide to Western Trees will prove a long lasting reference for outdoor lovers and tree finders. This easily equals the excellent Eastern Region guide in quality, detail, number of species listed, and beautiful photographs. However, if you want a heavy duty instant identification tool, hold off on this and purchase the Peterson Guides to Trees. However, if you love to marvel at trees and identify them in any amount of time at all, buy this along with the Eastern Guide. The quality binding of this newly updated edition is nice quality, and easy to carry. The earlier, out of print, hardback Economy Press edition was bulky, but contained more species listings. Still that difference is hardly noticeable, and buy this edition at good costs. This guide, (compared to the Petersons) will please a patient outdoor searcher attempting to identify any tree they find. Though the Peterson Guide to Trees should be bought prior to this, it is still an excellent and reliable addition to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Nice guide for at home or the field........2002-03-26

This book offers excellent photographs and very extensive information on trees. I use it often and have had great success identifying trees that otherwise I wouldn't know what they were. nicely organized and easy to use. The compact size is awesome for travelling and taking it hiking. Another great Audobon guide.

5 out of 5 stars Like traveling with a tour guide!.......2007-08-20

This book provided lots of helpful information during our exploration of the state. It provided maps, accommodations, restaurant that suits our budget, scenic places, and a bit of history about the state; its climate and its people. It covers all sides of Idaho: Southwest, South Central, The High Country, North Central and the Panhandle. We stayed in BOY-see, not BOY-zee and certainly not the French "bwah-zay! As you could see, the author added humor to this guide. As suggested, we jogged the serene tree-lined Boise River Greenbelt, biked at the pristine Boise Front, explore the Grove--the largest park near downtown, and clicked our cameras away to capture the scenic mountains. As we strolled down the cosmopolitan area, we knew exactly where to eat, where to go for amusement, and where to withdraw money. We had fun. We also explored the beautiful city of Eagle--a place that took our breaths away. Our next stop? Coeur D'Alene. And we're taking our tour guide with us: The Moon Handbooks.Cold Eyes

4 out of 5 stars An above average guide to the state of Idaho.......1999-12-12

After reading some of the reviews on this book, I decided to reread The Idaho Handbook. The book that I read was quite a bit different than some of the reviews.

While the author's position on land-use is well documented throughout the book, I would hardly classify those views as extreme. Quite a few of the Idahoans that I talked with in the two weeks that I spent in Idaho last summer expressed real concerns regarding land-use throughout the state.

When I am looking for a tour book, I want something more than the AAA travel books. The book contains a significant amount of the history of the state. The book also contains all of the usuals for a tour book - an objective analysis of the lodging and food options in many small towns. This is very important as some parts of the state, the options are somewhat limited.

In addition, he covers the major (and many of the minor) attractions in the state. A number of these attractions were not found in other books.

I enjoy the Moon Guides a whole lot more than other guides. Their strength is that that they are written by people who spend a lot of time travelling throughout the state rather than the tourist areas. For example, Deke Castleman's Nevada Handbook dedicated 10-15% of the book on the Las Vegas area.

        4 out of 5 stars A Toot for Root.......1999-11-25

Idaho may not be everyone's idea of a "hot potato" destination. But if you want a clever, concise guide to a wonderful state -- this is it. Check out "Rural Bar Etiquette" on p. 78 for a sample of Root's humor.

This is not your average dry guide (Although Root's sense of humor is indeed dry!) You will find instead detailed descriptions and opinions(some very funny) which can help you decide the places that might be of special interest to you. It is one of the best guide books I have ever read.

3 out of 5 stars Don't be put off by the author's politics; a good book........1999-10-21

This book covers the state reasonably well and will help you make good decisions about where to go and what to avoid. I used it during a recent three-week trip.

It's not superlative, so normally I wouldn't post. After reading the first two reviews, however, I almost didn't buy the book, so I wanted to persuade others that the author's frequent political intrusions need not push you away. His opinions do slant the narrative and make some of the sidebars less attractive, but I found them easy to ignore.

Given the absence of other guidebooks, the solid coverage of the food/lodging/activities stuff makes this a valuable resource. It's also consistent with Moon's emphasis on hidden places and the great outdoors. An added bonus is that the author has a talent for capturing the feel of a place; this doesn't suffer much because of his political views.

Those who've come to trust Moon publications shouldn't hesitate.

1 out of 5 stars Idaho Guide filled with Bias and Discrimination.......1999-06-03

I buy these kind of books to decide what activities to do on vacation with my family. I do not buy these books to listen to an author complain about peoples religion, political beliefs, or any of the sort. If this author would have made the comments about a Black Community about a community that has a large Mormon population he would have be censored and his writing rejected. Although the book does give some good information about local communities, it pales in comparison to the detailed information given in the Wyoming and Montana versions that I have. To bad the author was to busy bashing Amtrak, Mormons, and Conservatives, instead of giving accurate information. The author fails to point out several points of interest that I do know of.

            Book Description

Nannerl Mozart's twelfth birthday wish is to become a famous composer. She's already considered a brilliant musician, touring Europe with her little brother Wolfgang and playing the clavier for queens and kings in the great courts. But Papa doesn't take her seriously as a composer and won't even teach her to play the violin or the organ. Mama usually has a list of household chores for her, and Wolfi always manages to steal everybody's attention.

In this wonderful blend of fact and fiction, Barbara Nickel brings the eighteenth century world of a talented young girl to life.

I have NOT read the book but the reviews are veryt odd in tath they all refer to Mozarts younger sister..This is a very odd because Annerl was 5 year OLDER than Wolfgang!!!

            5 out of 5 stars A fantastic historical fiction.......2001-03-12

This is one of my favourite historical fictions. Nickel is always detailed in her historical fictions such as The Nine Days Queen. Nannerl's dreams and sibling underappreciation is realistic. I enjoyed the historical details in the dreams and the occasional use of german. To top it off, further reading on the Mozart family, Nickel includes a Bibliography with good ressources. Inspiring for the young reader.

rosebud is a design magazine that operates with the desire to explore the possibilities and potentials that paper and 2D- structure have to offer. rosebud no. 3 is dedicated to the subject matter blind text. The term blind text stands for a random, meaningless text that serves presentational layout purposes when the real text is not existent. The many facets of a blind text become clear through a load of eye candy, further through contributions on the topic by international authors, artists, academics and designers. Via form, structure and content, rosebud no. 3 proves that a blind text´s status reaches far beyond a variable parameter.

            Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Difficult to Describe in Words, and Parts Are Inscrutable or "Eye Candy," But Generally Interesting.......2006-05-08

The design and content of this book (from publisher "Die Gestalten") are related to "Blindtext," German for "dummy text" (like "Lorem ipsum"). AKA issue no. 4 of +rosebud magazine,* the book is difficult to describe. Starting with the outside**, it's 24.5 x 17.0 cm, with grey cardboard covers attached to the pages with green cloth tape. The front has in German and English "This text is for the cover of a book..." colored to resemble a woman's face. A yellow bookmark ribbon is included.

When you open the book, you can pull out a 4.8 x 4.0 cm "Micro-Novel" in German and English entitled "The Lost Mind." Concerning writer's block, it appears to be die-cut from the pages of the main book.

Inside you find 200 pages of generally interesting design, typography, and photography. There are a couple dozen contributors and projects, of which my favorites in English were:

Pages 19-26: "Art & Life." Photographs whose captions refer to famous works of art (e.g. "Mona Lisa") but whose foregrounds feature couples in sexual positions (some breasts and rear ends are visible, but no genitalia), with reproductions of the works of art in the background. Intriguing juxtapositions.

Pages 62-67: "A Perfect Gray Day." A poem about a man pressing his hand onto a plaster wall is set in white text on photographs in varying shades of gray.

Pages 90-97: "The Theft of Privacy," with the digits 0-9 scattered about.

Pages 196-198: "The End of the World." Gravity stops, and everything floats away.

The book has won several awards per the "Rosebud, Inc." site. My main complaint about the book is that some of the projects I would classify as either "inscrutable" or "eye candy." The former category includes the "Cassandra Fax Project" on pages 9-18; the latter category includes "enRiconstruct" on pages 179-183. Nonetheless, get this fascinating book from Amazon.com!

                5 out of 5 stars Siberian Huskies (Barron's A Complete Pet Owner's Manual).......2000-10-28

Although relatively small (75 pages), this paperback covers a little bit of everything pertaining to Sibes. From breed standards to training to breeding. For it's price it covers a lot of ground but might not go into the detail one might expect from a larger book. However, for it's size and price I feel it is an excellent book worthy of purchase for any owner of the Siberian Husky.

5 out of 5 stars Siberian Huskies : Everything About Purchase, Care, Nutritio.......2000-04-27

Exellent! Out of all the Siberian Husky books I have read, which is about 6, this one was the most helpful. I have a Husky of my own and if I could say something about this book is that it was so helpful! I recomend it for all want to be and all owners of Siberian Huskies!

4 out of 5 stars A general guide to the Husky-a must for first time owners........1998-12-18

This small book could not have hoped to cover "Everything..." as it claims, but I have found it to be useful on many occasions. It provides a general guide to almost every conceivable situation and concern, providing the quality of advice a new owner needs. An owner of a new sibe puppy will want to supplement this book, so they should consult their breeder-use an established husky kennel, not a backyard breeder-other texts, and their vet. Other topics, like medical/health and diet, will likewise be covered in more detail in other places. Don't stop with this book but do get it if you are with sibe. And hang on to that leash!

4 out of 5 stars A must read for the serious Siberian Husky owner/fancier!.......1999-01-03

Michael Jennings has written this book in a way even the novice can understand. From Pet owner to the serious fanciers, it is full of information that you will want to have in your library. This second book in a series can compel even the pet owner to want to raise their loving Siberian and know all it's history.

From the beginnings to the present, each chapter has something for everyone. Being a serious fancier myself, I have found this book to be very informative, yet easy to read and understand.

Kudos to Michael for another well written book.

4 out of 5 stars This is a great, great book about the Siberian Husky........1998-12-06

"The New Complete Siberian Husky," by Michael Jennings, is a must for all potential and current Sibe owners. It touches on a variety of subjects- history of the breed, the breed standard, famous husky kennels, as well as the care of the Siberian Husky, training, breeding, and all other vital subjects. Lots of photos, especially of past Siberians who were very valuable to the breed's beginnings. Many of these dogs can be traced on your own Siberian's pedigree. The book also contains the REAL story about Balto and Togo, quite a bit different than the movie...

4 out of 5 stars A fine resource for all Sibe owners or those considering........1997-08-22

Heavy emphasis on background & breeders of Sibes Each dog breed needs a similar book that fills the dog owner with pride and convinces him(her) that they have selected the quintessential dog to own. It also is valuable in pointing out some of the unique problems of the animal i.e. wanderlust, digging, behavioral quirks difficulty training as well as the endearing features of the breed. Perhaps too much time is placed on the "begots". It introduces you to the major "players" breeders of Sibes and has an excellent chapter on the breed standards. The numerous photos are somewhat repititious since all good Sibes are beautiful and it is hard to see the subtlties in black and white when talking about copper and other hues. Spins a great narrative about the "serum run" and the legendary "Togo" which I have made into a children's story which is loved by my grandchildren.

This book doesn't seem so good from the cover, but truthfully it's great. It has TONS of photos inside and explains behavior and training methods. It is a good book to start with if you are trying to decide what kind of Husky dog to buy.

4 out of 5 stars Good for flowers and ornamentals.......2003-04-16

Every page covers two plants each with a large photo on top. They present very compact information, consistently covering when flowers bloom, heights, wind, sun, watering, overwintering, which will help plan a full year graden.

Largely the book is about flowers and ornamentals. Only 12 herbs and 7 vegetables are covered and insufficently. FOr the vegetables I was interested in found terms/instructions used not in the glossary and descriptions that diagrams would have helped more on. BOUNTIFUL CONTAINER for growing edibles in containers was by far better for that topic.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the Best!.......2003-03-02

I found information on overwintering plumbagos that I couldn't find any place else. Focused on containering, no raised beds, no plant biology. It's informative, and the pictures make it entertaining to read, as well. Easy to read picture symbols let you know right away which plants need sun, and which need shade, how much water they need, and how much light they need. In the front there are seasonal suggestions for combining plants and how to make their suggestions. Yes, roses and hydrangeas grow in a tub! There's information on how to make chemical-free potions for your plants to take care of fungal infections, aphids, and mildew. And for the brave, you can start your patio collection from seed...helpful instructions show how. I've done them and trust me, if I can do it, anybody can!

I can't say enough about this book. I consider this book my container garden bible, and has been very useful for me in creating a garden environment on my 7x10 apartment patio in the Oklahoma City area! This is simply the best book I've seen on container gardening.

4 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Overwintering Reference Sections.......2001-01-04

This makes book 4 in a row in my quest to learn the wonders of container gardening, and it does a pretty good job. The first third of this work follows the lead of the previous, it shows the four seasons and a decent number of example containers along with the dimensions and what it would take at the nursery to put it together. The final two thirds though is where it shines, the author provides a compact encyclopedia of container plants arranged by scientific name. The plus here is that they include information for each and every one on overwintering. Starting my garden in November in Zone 8 I found this information extremely useful when picking out my next project. Overall a very good offering, especially for the reference information contained therein. For further reading, I suggest Hillier's book [for great ideas/examples], and David Joyce's for classification based on color.

This is absolutely the best book on container plants. There are so many plants that I would never think of planting in a pot, but Heitz will try anything. This book has been the greatest influence on my container garden (which you can see in Fine Gardening Magazine March/April 2000). Get this book if you are serious about container gardening.

5 out of 5 stars Great resource for gardeners with small spaces!.......2000-02-04

This is an excellent book that I use constantly as a resource. Not only did it offer valuable tips about plant care and different appropriate plants for containers, it also had nice examples of container gardens for all seasons. I find the plant index in the back the most helpful. Recommended for beginners and those with apartment balconies or patios!

2 out of 5 stars One of the strangest publishing mistakes I've seen.......2004-05-03

I was tempted by this book on the remainder table at my local Borders store. Since this is a German book (translated into English), I thought I'd better check the entries of plants I was familiar with to get some sense of the book's accuracy and usefulness to American gardeners. My initial impression was that it was okay, but not entirely accurate, based on personal experience and other reading, but the price was low and the pictures were pretty. Then I came across the "caterpillar" section ("caterpillar" substituted for Latin names; see previous review). As a former editor, I'm aware of how easy it is to publish errors, but this one takes the cake. The remainder price may be low enough that some people will put up with the infestation of "caterpillars," but I couldn't justify buying something with that extensive a problem, no matter how pretty the pictures are. Frankly, I think the remaindered books should be marked with a warning sticker--I'd have been pretty unhappy had I bought this book and then discovered the mistake once I got home.

My copy of this book does not have the publishing error mentioned in the previous review - and I found this book to be quite useful in deciding what to plant for my patio garden.

I checked out a copy of "500 Essential Container Plants",
from my library. Once I looked at it at home I found that for the entire section "Plant for a single season" - about 100 pages - in the body of the text the Latin name of the plants is replaced by the word "caterpillars." My guess is that the publisher replaced the Latin names with caterpillars so the text would fit through his spell checker then forgot to go back and put back the Latin. I would guess that it is the same with all copies.

The articles cover major aspects of the discussion of Jewish apocalypticism, in relation to the Hebrew bible, New Testament and Hellenistic-Roman world. Distinctive strengths of the volume include clusters of essays on the Sibylline oracles and on the relationship between apocalypticism and wisdom. A section of the book is devoted to studies on Daniel.

and although Mr. Dubal is a recognized scholar of some repute, that talent does not include pencil drawings. His drawings of performers and composers are embarrasingly bad... and why did he think that Beethoven died with his wig on!?! That was a totally jarring drawing, but the overview of the great piano compositions are worth the price of the book.

This is a rich, passionately written, concise encyclopedia about great pianists and great piano composers. It includes brief but interesting biographical material, and astute critiques of the professional and creative apects of the artists lives. David Dubal absolutely loves music and has a profound, sensitive and clear understanding of it. The CD of classic recordings that is included in the back of this book is a fabulous compliment to a most useful guide and reference for all those who enjoy piano music.

I stopped playing piano 20 years ago and this book is so wonderful for refreshing my memory !! I love how the author first introduced the history of the piano before going into details of the keys and fingering. Unlike a significant proportion of the pianists represented in the book David Dubal is unusually enterprising when it comes to covering the contemporary piano repertoire. Not so hot on detail (favouring the broadbrushstroke)Dubal is never less than engaging and doesn't simply go for the post-romantics and easy listening side of things. The new edition contains a number of significant additions including the British composer Michael Finnissy who is very eloquently described.

Also, I rather like the way Dubal skimps on some of the big names and instead gives a brilliant account on a controversial figure like Weissenberg. Once again, some of what Dubal writes doesn't stand up to close scrutiny but in the end i'm persuaded by the gusto. Stongly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars An Interesting Work on the Piano, Its Performers and Recordings.......2006-01-01

Note: I am writing as a non-pianist, reviewing the 1995 (Second)Edition of his book.

David Dubal's The Art of the Piano, Its Performers and Recordings is a fascinating read. The breadth of the book is as astonishing as is both the number of pianists covered in Part One, and the time it must have taken to listen to their recordings and concerts, synthesizing both, presenting them in an interesting yet clear manner to the reader. Dubal gives great space to certain pianists such as Arrau, Rubinstein, Ashkenazy, Lipatti, Richter, Gould, and particularly to Horowitz, yet relatively little space to pianists that readers might have liked more elaboration about such as Uchida and Kovacevich (who is listed as Bishop-Kovacevich). Nonetheless, it is enjoyable to thumb through his book, compare and contrast one's views of a given artist with Dubal's sense of them. An essential underlying aspect of this book is the recorded legacy of some, but certainly not all, of the pianists discussed, the ability to study, compare and contrast differing approaches to the musical text, interpretation, and technique. As a non-pianist, I cannot speak to his comments, say, on pedalling technique, but I assume they are sharply and carefully drawn, and, given extant recordings as frames of reference, quite useful and instructive to pianists. Likewise, Mr. Dubal's discussion, in Part II, of the piano literature, with citations of recordings offering a range of approaches to the music in question is interesting if somewhat frustrating because so many recordings he mentions are on LP as opposed to CDs. What is positive is that the best of these recordings are being reissued.

Mr. Dubal's knowledge of the piano, its history, lore, performance and recorded legacy is immense, and I don't know if another book (or author) can match him and his insights. I do, however, think, there is both equal room and need for a separate book such as Ernest Hutcheson's Literature of the Piano, which more comprehensively and exhaustively examines, enumerates and evaluates the literature of the piano itself, than Dubal's Art of the Piano which tends to provide short summaries of numerous composers while leaving unmentioned still more. Dubal's book seems aimed for the finished or professional pianist, Hutcheson for the student and amateur. Both books, I think, are essential to the pianist's, or piano lover's, library.
