This book is excellent. It's photos of flowers and leaves are close up and clear. The introduction is filled with information on flower and leaf parts with diagrams. The information, description, and where each flower can be found is very detailed.
Great for general curiosity.......2007-07-05
This book is great for those who like to know what they're looking at when they're out on a hike away from home. Since it covers the entire western U.S., it won't have every single flower you come across, but it can often help you get at least to the right family. I have a book that covers every single plant that I could come across right around where I live, but when I go more than a couple hours from home, this is a fun book to have. Great pictures, and great info on each plant in the back.

As in all the National Audubon Society Field Guides the book is great. National Audubon Society Field Guides are my favorite of all the guide books. The color photos are clear and close up for easy identification of the plant. Descriptions are in-depth for information and assistance in identification. I highly recommend this book.

The illustrations are fabulous. I have seen many wildflower books where all the pictures are in black and white. This book has actual photos of the flowers as well as detailed descriptions to help you learn. I recommend this book!

simply wrong.......2007-01-10
I sure hope that the 20th edition is better, because the 19th edition is simply bad. The information is useful here and there, but there are a number of inaccuracies that are extremely frustrating to a traveler. Examples:
1) The book states that American citizens (or more specifically anyone but UK) can get a day visa at the border of mainland China after taking the train there. We thankfully asked the Hong Kong Tourist Board (a much better source of info, btw) before hopping on the train for a 1 hour ride, because it turns out that this is wrong. You need to obtain this visa in Central or Kowloon BEFORE getting to the Chinese border.
2) The location of sites on the maps is just plain wrong at times. For example, we went on a lengthy walk to find the Cityplaza shopping center, which the shopping-in-Causeway-Bay map clearly shows is located in Causeway Bay. It turns out this shopping center is in Quarry Bay several miles away from where it's annotated on the Fodor map. In addition, ALL the maps in the entire book are very low res, so that often only one in every 5 streets is named.
3) We went looking for a recommended Vietnamese restaurant based on its location on the Fodor map. It turns out again that the annotation/number was in the wrong place on the map, on the wrong street. The right street was only two blocks away (impossible to tell since neither the right or the wrong street was named on the map), which wouldn't be too horrible unless you consider that the book itself says that it's not a neighborhood that is safe enough to be randomly walking around.
None of these alone is horrible, but when you add these mistakes (and others I'm sure we didn't stumble across) together, it simply adds frustration to anyone's rare vacation that should be relaxing.
Don't buy this book.
Pedestrian, not much of a Guide and no authority.......2005-12-02
This is a poor compilation for a guide. Much of the information is not enlightning and you can find better and more accurate information in the free guides in Hong Kong Airport and in your Hotel room.
I have better quality of information from my visit the previous year than this guide can provide.
I'm primarily using it now to see whether it can guide me to the better restaurants this time around, I will let you know if it failed on that count to when I come back.
Don't waste you money.
Disappointing.......2005-03-09
No matter how bad remarks were given to the Lonely Planet's edition on Hong Kong, after reading the Fodor's guide I went to bookstore to buy the edition of Lonely Planet. Disappointing, indeed.

"Milestones in Black American History" is a 16-volume exploration of the black experience from ancient Egypt to the present day, with each volume focusing on a specific period of African-American history. "Days of Sorrow, Years of Glory," focuses on the pivotal period between the slave revolt led by Nat Turner in southeastern Virginia in 1813 and the passage of the controversial Fugitive Slave Act by the U.S. Congress as part of the Great Compromise of 1850. Timothy J. Paulson contrasts the story of bondage in slavery for millions of African-Americans with the efforts of free blacks who produced an impressive array of industrial inventions, novels, music, sermons, newspapers, and political oratory. Paulson covers racist violence in the North, the foundation of the American Anti-Slavery Society, the murder of Elijah P. Lovejoy, the black bandmaster Frank Johnson, the Battle of Lockahatchee between the U.S. Army and a black-Seminole army, David Ruggles's first black magazine, the "Amistad" and "Creole" slave ship revolts, and more.
"Days of Sorrow, Years of Glory" goes beyond the most famous names in the struggle of black Americans for liberty (Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Frederick Douglass) to tell about Norbert Rillieux, William Henry Lane, and Joseph Cinque. I was pretty well versed in the political side of the story in terms of how the nation got from the Missouri Compromise to the Great Compromise of 1850, but Paulson is focusing more on the social side of the struggle. As a result, it is rather surprising to see how much was happening in Black American History in the years before the decade leading up to the Civil War. This book is illustrated with contemporary etchings, drawings, cartoons, and photographs from the period, including a photograph of the Hanging Tree where Nat Turner was executed, the title page of a book written by Frederick Douglass, and a much-reprinted lithograph entitled "The Old Plantation" showing the South's idealized view of slavery. For classes, students and teachers who want more information about American History from the African-American perspective than they will find in their textbooks, this is an excellent series.

I've been enjoying this book for over ten years. Highly recommended for the naturalist in your life, especially the young ones. The illustrations are spectacular. The amphibian section is mindblowingly realistic and they are all works of art. It's a great reference book and an interesting addition to your coffee table. The main animal phyla are covered: mammals, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and fish. Subsequent orders are all found. I wish they'd make an encyclopedia that would cover lower forms--I bet that would be amazing! This is a useful guide for any traveler encountering new beasties.

The illustrations in this book are fantastic! The artist's renderings of animals are colorful, refined and better than photographs. The book is divided into five sections, mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fishes. Each page offers illustrations and a discription of the animal, it's habitat, and behaviour. If we see an animal and don't know what it is, the first thing we do is look in this book. A wonderful addition to any home library.

Very interesting reading.......2005-03-26
Tracing the history of vertebrates, this interesting book provides good information about animals and how they evolved. The illustrations are also very good and interesting. I've read parts of this book to my little daughter and she loves looking at the pictures and imagining living back in time when these animals roamed the earth.
Young earth creationists might want to avoid this book like the plague. The timelines are very heretical and all those intermediate species show a solid pattern of evolution of life on this planet.

This informative and well-illustrated book would be a useful adition to any nature- or science-lover's personal library, or an interesting coffee table book
I've only seen and read the 1988 edition so I don't know how many changes have been made in the new edition, but I assume the format's still the same. Basically this is a very good non-technical introduction to prehistoric vertebrates (animals with backbones - fish, amphbians, reptiles, birds & mammals). Although there are some pages that provide the basic background - how fossils form, continental drift, etc - by the far the most interesting, and indeed the bulk, of the book is the coverage it gives to a large number of individual genera, each of which is illustrated by a color painting. It is the sheer number and diversity of creatures covered here, rather than simply a few dozen types of dinosaurs, that makes this book so interesting. I find the realism of the art work tends to vary - some drawings seem more realistic than others, but I suppose that's just personal taste. The art work is still of good quality thoughout though. The accompanying text is brief but clear and informative, and gives a basic introduction to that type of animal. The best thing about this book is that it's not just about dinosaurs (although these are covered in detail) but also deals with many other types of vertebrate creatures as well. My only real criticism is that despite the title - "animals" - no invertebrate animals were included, no trilobites, eurypterids, nautiloids etc. Still, you can only cover so much in the space available, and this book does a pretty good job.

Well-Written, but Doesn't Have Alot To Work With........2002-01-16
The NY Times Book Of Broadway isa very well-written book. The typical NY Times quality and fare, with excellent additions to add spice. But this book isn't all peaches and cream. The book is a collection of Broadway reviews from NY Times. The reviews are exactly what you read from the newspapers, but that has nothing to do what's wrong with this. It had nothing to work off of, and includes past reviews, back in the days when Brantley was a nobody and wrote average reviews.
