This compact guidebook, produced to the National Audubon Society's high standards of quality, gives full descriptions of more than 650 species found east of the Rocky Mountains, along with notes on several hundred more. The eminently sensible organization relies on first-impression visible characteristics rather than the elaborate keys of some older texts--a format well suited to beginning wildflower enthusiasts. If, for instance, you wanted to identify a long-stemmed, tubular red flower that you found in a grove of loblolly pines, you would first turn to the color plates, find the section devoted to red flowers, find a likely match from the 30-odd choices, and then turn to the text to see that the flower's habitat and range made a good fit, ruling out those species that do not. After a few minutes' looking, you'll have identified a trumpet honeysuckle. Well written and richly illustrated, this peerless guide makes the ideal companion for an expedition to eastern wood or prairie. --Gregory McNamee

Book Description

EASTERN REGION

This fully revised edition brings a new level of beauty, accuracy, and usefulness to the field guide that wildflower enthusiasts have relied upon for more than 20 years.

More than 940 all-new, full-color images show the wildflowers of western North America close-up and in their natural habitats. The guide has been completely revised to make identification in the field easier than ever. Images are grouped by flower color and shape and keyed to clear, concise descriptions that reflect current taxonomy.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Test.......2007-07-07

Each of our five kids had to collect wildflower specimens and identify them with some general information for their eighth grade project. We used these books with each one and they are still in great shape after more than 10 years usage. I recently purchased the updated versions and was very pleased with the photos. I didn't really think they could get better but they did!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide to Wildflowers.......2007-04-20

I bought this book to help me identify the flowers I encountered both in my backyard and in a local state park. Happily, I can report that I was able to identify almost all of them that I came across (one Violet variant, the Confederate Violet, was not mentioned anywhere I could see in the book, but a North Carolina State wildflower website helped me identify it). The color photographs are top notch, many showing both a closeup of the flower, and the plant as a whole. Detailed information on each plant is also available, including the common flowering periods, a location range, dimensions of the flower as well as the entire plant, and much more. If you purchase this book, be sure to read this detailed information when identifying a flower; a number of variants are mentioned in the text that are not shown in the photographs. Overall, I am greatly pleased with this book (though it was the only one I could find that covered plants in the south-eastern part of the United States). Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Rugged Field Guide.......2006-08-27

Something should be said about the ruggedness and durability of this excellent field guide. Mine was purchased about 10 years ago and it has not been lightly used. I dropped it in a creek once and it became as saturated as a sponge, yet after drying out it has never had print or page damage or loose binding. My little boy is always paging through its nearly 900 pages and kids can be very tough on books but this one has held up. Read the other positive reviews of the books content, I can not add much to them. This is the best field guide I have ever had.

2 out of 5 stars Not exactly cutting edge ..........2001-08-28

Pentagram's Compendium is, as far as I'm concerned, not a very exciting book. There is a sense of déjà vu all over the place. There are some happy exceptions, but generally it's the kind of design that has been around for at least 10 years. There is a lot which is clever, witty and beautiful in the conventional sense, but all too often the design collapses under its own weight. There is so little excitement! Compare this to Bruce Mau's Life Style which is an achievement in a different league. I think Mau has his finger on the pulse of our age. He wrestles heroically with the contradictions and paradoxes of his work and his book vibrates with these worries and tensions. The Pentagram book is much more suave. This is not surprising given that the collective was founded in the early seventies by a bunch of 30-plus designers. The most interesting aspect of their approach has nothing to do with their design: it's their loosely coupled organisation with seventeen partners working in three different cities that has managed to thrive over three decades. I assume that many of the corporate dinosaurs of today will continue to call on Pentagram's undoubtedly solid design expertise. But the vicissitudes of the cybereconomy demand a more vicious, tormented and volatile kind of design. For that I would revert to Mau.

As textbooks go this is a light overview of Western Theatre Tradition. It includes a CD ROM with very little additional information. The book fails to go in depth into the historical influences that helped shape world and the theatrical tradition. It does however include landmark events in the theatre world of western europe and how it evolved into what we know today.

The book was in great condition and arrived within a reasonable amount of time.

              Book Description

Designed for nonmajors, this introductory text is a helpful and practical guide to what theatre is and to ways to enjoy the entire theatre experience. Its survey of the theatre landscape is enlivened by behind-the-scenes stories from the two authors—one an actor/director and the other a costume designer. Exercises at the ends of chapters (unique to this text) prompt students to reflect on their experiences with theatre.

              Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Too Simple: simply wrong........2003-07-14

Okay, if you're a non-major and you want to know something about theatre, wouldn't you want to know correct information? I unwittingly used this book full of errors to teach an Intro to theatre course, recently, and found myself constantly correcting or clarifying concepts in the book to my students. This shouldn't have been necessary. While I think it's fine to simplify concepts for beginning students, it's not okay to get things simply wrong. The design section has big problems in this regard. For instance they say "Although imprecise names like puce, chartreuse, and peach are still used to market products in the fashion and automobile industries, serious artists have abandoned such vague descriptions and use only the precise name that defines a particular hue . . ." I don't know who the "serious artists" are that the authors write about but no professionals I've ever worked with, in New York City and other places "use only the precise name." Usually we don't even use a name and grab something that is pretty much the color we want and say--dye the cloth this blue but a little lighter or we use names like peach and chartreuse. I have problems with some of their defintions and use of terms like 'intensity' when I've always heard the term 'saturation' used for the same concept, which is more descriptive and help students distinguish color from how bright or dim a light.
The way Markus and Sarver cover multi-cultural/diversity issues like color blind casting and plays by people of color is embarrassingly patronizing or just weird. If watching a place by Luis Valdez helps us "learn respect for people of different ethnic backgrounds" why doesn't watching a play by Henrik Ibsen, since I'm not, nor were any of my students, Norwegian or European?
The section on acting implys that Stanislavski's method acting is the only kind of actor training available in the United States. While they don't have to deliniate the Suzuki or other methods at least they could add that while method acting is the most popular actor training there are other actor training schools.
While the section on producing theatre is New York is pretty good I would not purchase the book for that.
The text seemed geared toward an elementary student not high school or college. And while it is not all bad, it has too many faults to be adopted for classroom use.

The author writes an excellent book on the popular arts. The book is both delightful to read, and a good reference, even though only an index of principal names is provided. He died in 1970, and renewed the copyright in 1952. Therefore, he was able to see the happenings on Broadway.

The book is a collection of essays, with no particular thread from one to the next. So the book can be read as desired. His writing was straightforward, humorous, and informative.

                  Book Description

Architect Martin Bloom has written Accommodating the Lively Arts to encourage the building and preservation of spaces that can nurture live performance in an age increasingly threatened by the steady encroachment of simulated electronic entertainments. This book is essential reading for anyone who might ever be involved in making decisions about the design or renovation of performance facilities -- architects, designers, students, theatre professionals (actors, directors, producers, technicians) and all those who might find themselves on committees charged with deciding on the location, financingm and shape such facilities may take.

Martin Bloom's Accommodating The Lively Arts provides a technical guide to the design and renovation of theater spaces, from location and shape through fundamentals of theater design. Any involved in theater will find this an important consideration on organizing and building spaces.

5 out of 5 stars This is a little sweetheart of a book........1998-10-09

By no means a glossy record of dramatically realized theater designs, it is rather a gentle manifesto of theater design principles. The author, a practicing designer of theaters, cultural centers, and exhibition structures, says that spaces for live performances should consider three fundamental elements: focus, platform and frame. It all makes perfect sense. The author has added some helpful little sketches, and there is an introduction by Chris Marowitz.

5 out of 5 stars Essentials & insights about theater as experience in space.......1998-02-10

I picked up this book expecting to read a fairly technical account of how to design and build "better" theaters because I happened to know that it is by an architect who has spent much of his professional life designing theaters and performance spaces. What I discovered is not a "how to" book (although all architects might well profit from its many insights into how architecture should "accommodate" the intended functions and users of a structure.) No, this turns out to be a book by an individual who has spent much of his life involved with theatrical productions on various levels and is here passing on his compressed wisdom about the very essence of what makes for a satisfying and significant visit to the theater. It is not a history of theaters as structures, although it does weave its insights around the historical development of performance spaces, from the earliest Greek threshing floors to contemporary theaters-in-the-round (and there are drawings to help us see the essential elements). It is not particularly concerned with individual buildings by architects, whether well-known or otherwise. It is, rather, about how the elements of physical spaces affect our experience of theatrical productions--serious drama, light comedy, musicals, whatever. On one level, we are all aware of this--whether the seats are too cramped, how the sight lines are obstructed, yes, and whether the ladies room is inadequate. But Martin Bloom has thought much longer and harder and deeper about al these matters, and you end up feeling he has revealed something essential about the point where architecture, theaters, drama, and life intersect.

                          Book Description

A play is fundamentally a text for performance, capable of achieving complete expression only in the living encounter between actor and spectator, the Markers argue in their new study of Henrik Ibsen in the theatre. The challenge of his plays has stimulated a remarkable range of creative responses on the part of actors, directors, and stage designers. All agree that a deeper meaning underlies the ‘reality’ Ibsen represents, yet the precise manner of its expression is the lively variant that gives his greatest plays their abiding fascination in performance. Ibsen’s Lively Art explores key stage productions and clusters of productions in detail, in an effort to shed new light on the central problems of interpretation governing each of six major Ibsen plays, from a romantic work like Peer Gynt to a late ‘symbolic’ one like John Gabriel Borkman. Guided by primary sources and often supported by their own firsthand observation, the authors push beyond the more familiar confines of English Ibsen into the less commonly traversed territory of German, Russian, French, and, in particular, Scandinavian theatre culture.

                            Book Description

In 1963, the beginning of the sixties and the sexual revolution, Gerard Windsor entered a novitiate to prepare to become a Jesuit priest. A decade later, in 1973, he visited Ireland for the first time, having left the Jesuits not long before. I Asked Cathleen to Dance is his intimate and beguiling memoir of that heady visit to Ireland when he first became bewitched by both the country and the world of women. It follows on from Heaven Where the Bachelors Sit, his highly acclaimed book which recounted his time spent in the novitiate.Patrick White had said to Windsor before the young man set out on his journey, that Ireland is an old man sitting on a bridge watching the water go by. For Windsor, however, Ireland was always a woman and unambiguously female. She was the woman old and the woman young.. And so we follow Windsor as he travels by bike, bus, on foot and in the cars of strangers across Ireland, and as he encounters women and his own latent sexuality. He says of himself on leaving the priesthood, and I was slow to enter any new world of sexual bonding. Yet he found himself seduced by the 'siren song' of Cathleen ni Houlihan 'the' party girl on Ireland's currency. Most of us can remember a journey taken early in our lives when the world opened up to us in ways we will never forget. This is such a journey, recalled here in poignant yet often humorous detail. Windsor's playfully wry and confiding tone and his own inept stumbling towards women suit perfectly the soft landscape and the cast of quirky characters he describes in I Asked Cathleen to Dance.
