Although pictures are attractive, they can also be misleading, especially in the case of mushrooms -- this book relies too heavily on photography to identify specimens. Its limited number of described species (and limited descriptions) make it virtually useless for all but the most striking, distinctive fungi.

The Original Investment Banker.......2007-04-16

Jacques Coeur was one of the more influential persons of his era, and did much to organize State finances for the King of France following the victories of Joan of Arc. In fact, King Charles VII is often called "the well served" because of the efforts of both Joan and Jacques Coeur.

Reyerson's book is the first study in English to appear in some time. While a small book, her efforts are unusually methodical, apparently taken from the original source documents as often as possible. She is also current with the research of other scholars into Coeurs' business activities and eventual downfall. This is seemingly a requirement of most historical research, but the breadth of Coeur's activities and the partisanship of commentators on his activities can often complicate the subject for a reader in search of objective treatment.

An especial skill of Reyerson seems to be the ability to reasonably extrapolate Coeur's business relationships from his activities. His diplomatic activites to the Papacy from the King of France, his actions as a magistrate settling cases of marque, and his trade and diplomatic activites are all carefully scrutinized. Because of Coeur's unique circumstances (especially his escape and flight from France), the usual records of these types of records, such as they existed, are often missing: this has likely hindered researchers in one of the more interesting eras of medieval France.

Kathryn Reyerson's book will be especially helpful to students of the early Renaissance and/or late medieval France who seek a well documented but brief introduction to this remarkable personage.

Good information, just black and white sketches of the plants! I did learn some of what I originally wished to glean from the book, but Color and clarity is what is needed in the mountains. The choice between problematic and edible plants can be subtle. Not worth the chance as a field decision assistant.

This book only describes a small number of edible plants in the Rocky Mountains, but does so very thoroughly for each plant. It provides good guidelines for testing the edibility of plants and careful descriptions to make sure you get the right plant.

Harrington is a great authority on Rocky Mountain flora.

This was given to me as a bday gift by a band mate that knows I've been keeping my own list of jokes, but this is by far the most complete I've ever seen. Most of these I hadn't heard of, and I loved the quotes and the stories. Glad someone took the time to do this right!

Interesting read if a bit frustrating.......2005-06-02

I found Tucker's book to be of great interest as an essay on the psychology of an aspect of Western humanity and I am writing this review partly as a corrective to the previous two because they are so misleading. The first reviewer is under the singular impression that Tucker is giving an account of the practices of some easily identifiable group. He is not. He is presenting a profile of a personality type and a development he considers to be significant. The second reviewer makes the same mistake as evidenced in his mistaken belief that the author is developing an argument in favor of something. His purpose is descriptive, not prescriptive. Look at the reviewer's reference to people on the "Dark Path." Then look at Tucker's page 202: "He {i.e., the Luciferan} believes that God is only a term referring to ultimate power, dominance and control." Obviously this person has not read the book with any care. Similarly wide of the mark is his remark about predation in nature. It is the general concept/behavior (i.e., thinking of others as "food" and destroying them to perpetuate oneself) that Tucker is primarily concerned with, not the various ways in which this principle plays out in the animal world. The frustrating aspect of the book for me is its focus on the West. The few references to the East indicate that the author is not really aware of the fact that what he is describing is a latter-day perverted Western version of an aspect of Saivism. Starting from the same premises (that all beings advance themselves at the expense of other existences) these magician-sages of India, who exist in the margins of their society, cultivate powers that have nothing to do with Darwinian notions (Saivism dates from the earliest period of the present humanity) or commonplace human interactions. By contrast, these Luciferans are just standard Western Alpha types or glorified pimps. Read Alain Danielou's "While the Gods Play" and "Shiva and Dionysus" to place what Tucker says in a larger context. From sound premises, the Luciferan personality is drawing mistaken conclusions.

After finally obtaining a copy of this text I was inundated with material that, at times perilously threatened to veer into accuracy, only to save its obscure goal by darting away into the least practical hypothesis presentable.

The author either has no idea about Luciferan practices or actually is a most devoted one attempting to save the tradition from the ignorant by jumbling and clouding the perceptions of others while making a pretty penny off their back. I am only grateful that I borrowed the text instead of purchasing it.

All in all a total waste of perfectly good paper and ink.

An inefficient predator.......2002-01-30

The author has fallen into the trap of dividing the animal world into herds and preditors. Ecologically the most sucessful preditors have been pack hunters. If he had understood this, he might have developed his argument for Promethian Satanism more convincingly. As it is, he has missed the mark with regard to love. No K-selected species can endure with out it, since it allows for the investment in progeny. His view that to a Luciferan the ultimate predation is predation of God, I found odd, since I haven't found many on the Dark Path who take God seriously. On the positive side,this book does point out the distain many feel for agape. It was a valiant attempt, and the logic sound, in that, the conclusions did flow from the premises. A better grasp of Ecology should improve his next book.

This book's strength is its pictures - realistic representations of dry California landscape plants. I would use it as a "brainstorm" book for getting ideas on which species to use in a particular landscape. The notations for each species are also helpful. Definitely one for the library.

Jesus chided religious leaders who were appalled by children shouting, "Hosanna to David's Son." The Savior asked them, "And haven't you read in God's Word, `From the mouths of babes I'll furnish a place of praise'?"

Actor Blair Underwood has compiled a host of stories contributed by parents, grandparents and other caregivers who have marveled over the things spoken from that place of praise - a child's mouth. Before I Got Here (Atria Books) beautifully intimates and illustrates the depth of spiritual knowledge children possess.

Underwood posits: "The occasional nonchalant `utterings' of those youngsters can now and then leave a parent speechless ... if we truly listen to what our children are telling us." His own son, Paris, tried to explain the Rapture though he was only four and had no earthly exposure to the concept. Paris informed his dad, "God told me, when he made me, but I only had one ear at the time, so I could only hear a little."

The little bit Paris heard inspired the book. Blair Underwood discovered that other parents and caregivers shared similar stories. One friend, photographer Donyell Kennedy-McCullough urged him to put the stories in a book. And it is Kennedy-McCullough's poignant and incredible images of children that grace Before I Got Here's pages.

Each story is intriguing at the very least and astounding at best. What would you say about a three-year-old who admonishes his grandmother to, "Trust and believe in the Lord your God and He shall comfort you?" He'd never been to church or read the King James Version of the Bible.

There are countless stories of children who handpicked their parents in heaven. There are other stories of children who offer often amazingly wise counsel, beyond their years and scope of experience, to adults in peril.

Before I Got Here is not a Christian book and does not endorse religion of any type. Still, it is spiritually challenging as it confirms the very special place children hold in God's heart.

Before I Got Here is a great book to stick in a gift basket to a new and older mother. And the aesthetic quality of the cover and photographs make it an excellent coffee table book.

More religious than spiritual I believe..........2006-03-24

It definitely seems to be more religious than I expected. Although I only browsed though it, I thought there were going to be more recurring themes regarding reincarnation, children relating stories of having been here before,or knowing things beyond their circumstances. It does have some sweet stories and is nicely laid out for the reader. I got a bit choked up reading a couple of the stories.

I was excited to receive this book, but was not impressed with the contents. There was too much written by adults in the beginning, so I guess by the time you got to the stories of the children, it was a let down. I also thought there could have been a lot more to it. It just wasn't all it was built up to be.

Lacking.......2006-03-13

I found this book to be lacking in substance and humor. And I really wanted it to be great, I did. I heard about it from the Oprah show, and had already heard the best stories before I read it. If you have heard anything about this book, anything at all, I would save yourself the 20 bucks. I was disappointed by this book, and found that it did NOT support all the hype. I got this book from the library for free, and STILL FOUND IT to FALL SHORT of the great reviews. It is a sad day for me.

Wonderful book!.......2007-09-11

When I ordered this book, I don't know what I expected. I absolutely despise reading, and this book is not small by any standards. However, it is an excellent (and quite interesting, I might add) perspective on the life of the "melancholy clown," and I assure you that you will learn more about him than you ever wanted to know! If you're thinking of ordering this book, go for it!

in it you will see that he had good times & bad. You will learn about his life story & how so great he was. As a person &
actor as well . you get to learn about his two son's & his wifes too. In all i think it book is the best of dudely moore that i have ever read. He was so wonderful in his music & movies . Now you will get to learn about his early childhood & about mr moore himself. Buy this lovely book. Dudely will thank you for it. we miss you dudely :)

The book was one of the better books that I have read........1998-04-11

Mr. Moore is a very talented person, and reading about him in this biography was most interesting. When learning of the many hardships he faced, the reader must possess a stone heart to not be filled with compassion. I highly recommend reading this excellent book.

One piece but should be taken with other books.......2007-09-03

This very easy to read biography of Mussolini is an interesting study into the life of this dictator. It is by far one of the most pro-Mussolini biographies that one can find. There is little criticism of the dictator and his life is glazed over in some areas. Despite this it makes for a very interesting and refreshing perspective. I would not allow this to be the only biography of Mussolini that you read but it does make for a new perspective. While RJ Bosworth's book tries to make a balanced approach and ends up as a semi vindication this book combined with say Dennis Mack Smith's biography would really give a good view of Mussolini. The title is somewhat misleading and this really is mostly a domestic book that looks at the Duce's rule in Italy. There is some attention paid to foreign affairs but at the end it is mostly domestic. I think that this book can be useful in the context of a simple biography that looks positively at Mussolini but it is only one small piece of a very complicated puzzle and could have done much more hence the three star rating.

A Frustratingly Unreliable Book.......2001-11-18

This book has many fascinating things in it: direct quotations from conversations with Mussolini's aides; statements about him from world figures (including a compliment from Gandhi); and information about his deeply personal feelings regarding certain matters. Unfortunately, there are no citations (footnotes or endnotes) to back any of these up. In other words, the reader has no way to judge the reliability of what Hoyt is saying.

I know that publishers of books for popular consumption tend to dislike footnotes. However, Hoyt paints Mussolini in a better light than most other biographers or historians, and many of his conclusions are controversial. The absence of citations makes me doubt Hoyt; perhaps if he had included them, I would take some of his statements more seriously.

However, if you simply want to know the undisputed facts such as when and how he took power, this book will do nicely.

Very Complete........1998-12-16

This book gives a through story of his life from day one to the very last day of his life. I am doing a thesis on him and this book is great for a report.
