5 out of 5 stars The only college textbook im choosing to keep.......2007-05-04

I absolutely love this book, im lucky enough to be taking this class with Ralph so I'm slightly biased, but I would have bought it anyways. Any one who cares about this country and its history should read this book. Its all first person so you know and feel exactly what the authors felt. You can sense theyre anger, frustration, and in some cases ironic sense of humor. No other historical book will give you speeches by Susan B Anthony and songs by Immortal Technique in the same book!

5 out of 5 stars Great unknown American history.......2007-01-28

I've always been fond of books that dealt with hidden and little-known history. This is a good example of such.

Essentailly, you have documents from American history going all the way back the 1600s that involve people who went against the status quo.

In one book, you have antislavery Quakers and abolitionists, early feminists, American Indians speaking out against their oppression, American Loyalists during the American Revoution and Union loyalists from the South during the civil war, populists, Black Panthers, socilaists, racists, archconservatives, anarchists, and anti war activists from just about every war including the current one. All speak in their own voice.

Of course no one will agree with everything said here, but it's good to bring these people's words to light to put the struggles of our own time in their proper context.

5 out of 5 stars Dissent In America.......2006-12-06

Professor Ralph Young's book Dissent in America is a remarkable journey through American History using dissent as the theme, which, as the author points out, "has played a central role in the American experience". The book is much more than a compendium of writings on dissent. The author's clear and concise introduction to each reading creates the thread that ties that reading to what was happening in the country. There is a wealth of information in this volume. One can read Abigail Adams' letters to her husband, off writing the Constitution, asking that women be remembered in the document (he condescendingly brushes her off). Every major dissenter from Roger Williams to Cindy Sheehan is represented in this book Of course, for this writer the best part of Dissent in America is the 1960s (mostly because he lived through them). Be sure to read all of "Mobilization: Vietnam and the Counterculture, 1964-1975". This is an excellent resume of the protests and songs and manifestos that were so much a part of that period. Not so surprisingly a lot of what is included in that section remains contemporary (you might want to look up Pete Seeger's "Waist Deep in the Big Muddy" on YouTube).

Don't assume that this book deals only with leftist and liberal dissent and critiques of American Society. Dr. Young also presents articles from the Michigan Militia, Theodore Kaczynski, and Father Coughlin (who happens to be included in the book, just before Emma Goldman and Woody Guthrie). Dissent in America is a complete discourse which should appeal to anyone interested in American History. It is not only invaluable for students of the history of the United States, but also the general public who might want to understand all the forces which made America a great country.

5 out of 5 stars Dissent in America Begins Here!.......2006-11-15

This excellent, exhaustive anthology includes the great essays and documents written by dissenters from before the founding of the colonies to the present time. The author has done a fine job of providing a narrative history of the United States through the ideas and ideals of famous and little known Americans who exercised their cherished right to express themselves about the state of the country. Included are all the important themes--abolition, civil rights, women's rights, anti-war, taxation, etc.--that define America. A good feature is that it includes dissent from the Right and the left.
This hefty collection is ideal for discussion groups and college courses or for keeping on a nightstand to be read at leisure. At a time when our rights as citizens are being questioned and tested, this is an inspiring and comforting work, which emphasizes that dissent is older than the United States and a privilege and obligation of its citizens.

5 out of 5 stars Graphic Signs and Visual Literacy.......2003-08-19

Signs and Symbols: their design and meaning is a rare book in the realm of graphic design texts. It is one of the few that I have ever read that offers an expert practitioner's meditations and speculations on the roots of the visual symbol.
It is also about the only graphic design book with which I have ever found it worthwhile to argue. In the early 1920's Paul Renner laid out fourteen rules for typography, the first of which is that non-conformation to the rules is acceptable as long as they are considered. Frutiger's book is similar in that he doesn't offer formulae or recipes. Instead, Frutiger posits first causes-some of which I disagree with-and builds an argument for intelligent understanding and practice, something virtually absent from the discussion of all applied design. This book provides a singular contribution by a world renowned practitioner of the discipline of a personal, highly informed perspective of the origins and visual parameters of written language.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent source for knowledge.......2001-02-18

This book contains a wealth of information on the history and evolution of symbols. And it has the widest range and depth of symbols and their variations. With my degree in neuroscience and psychology, I also appreciated the insights and reminders about the deepest aspects of sybol/sign recognition.

The type and layout may need to be refined, but this is a real book, about real design--not just another portfolio piece by some design firm/publisher coalition that makes glossy books.

I have been a professional designer for a few years without having gone to design school. This is one of the most valuable books I used to gain the knowledge I use in my profession.

A book all about form: the essence of design. This is definitely something every real designer should read at least once and by the time I finish it I'll probably have learned as much about typography/design/marks/form as a year's worth of my design program.

This has to be one of the greatest design books ever written.

Some good dog advice, but some off-the-wall comments as well. E.g. in talking about dogs left home alone and destruction, she suggests on p 44 you "say to your dog in a commanding tone'Watch the house.' Your tone tells the dog it has something to do, and it will indeed do it - ..." Sorry, dogs don't work that way in my experience. Some of the grids and charts seem like a personal perspective that isn't necessary to the discussion. A lot of 'authority figure' discussions that are less useful than behavior modeling from other trainers. I'd go with someone like Karen Pryor or Ian Dunbar's books instead.

I have read dozens and dozens of books about canine behavior and training and, in my opinion, this is the best. In fact, if I could have only one book on this subject, this would be it. Not only has it helped improve my relationships with my dogs, but it's given me tools to improve my relationships with all beings, including friends, family, and colleagues.

I also recently enjoyed the book "The Other End of the Leash" by Patricia McConnell.

5 out of 5 stars A great book to train your dog.......2001-11-24

I bought this book after receiving my Service dog Bassie from Assiatance Dog Inistutite in 1998. I reminds me of some of the commands I learned in class and a good reminder if you forget how to train your dog a command. Bassie knows over 90 of them! I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars The Key to understanding why your dog does what he does.......2000-07-10

Decades of training pets and assistance dogs has resulted in this wonderful book. While Bergin covers all aspects of behavior, this is no dry, scientific tome. She provides very clear graphics and examples to help a dog owner identify what is going on in the dog's mind, based on the body language and behaviors observed. While that data is certainly useful, Bergin takes the next step and tells the owner what approach will work best for the particular type of dog.

This book is the perfect answer to the recent trend in dog training to insist that one method works for all dogs. By going beyond breed group temperament differences to look at the individual dog, Bergin gives every dog owner the help they need to determine how to best deal with their own dog for both basic training and problem resolution.

              Book Description

Design and Aesthetics is a comprehensive reader examining design history and aesthetic theory. It includes contributions from many of the writers whose word has been foundational to these two fields, including classic articles by Raymond Williams and Roger Scruton, and articles which provide an overview of current concerns and debates.

The first half of Design and Aesthetics looks at the main arguments which have emerged from contemporary analysis of the role of design in the communication process. Essays focus on the question of absolute aesthetic standards versus cultural relativism, and the role of objects in cultural and social life. The second part turns to particular areas of design history, ranging from architecture and pottery to the history of dress. Each section is prefaced by contextualizing introductions by Jerry Palmer and Mo Dodson.

              Book Description

Modern Japanese Aesthetics is the first work in English on the history of the Japanese philosophy of art, from its inception in the 1870s to the present. In addition to the historical information and discussion of aesthetic issues that appear in the introductions to each of the chapters, the book presents English translations of otherwise inaccessible major works on Japanese aesthetics, beginning with a complete and annotated translation of the first work in the field, Nishi Amane's Bimyogaku Setsu (The Theory of Aesthetics).

In its four sections (The Subject of Aesthetics, Aesthetic Categories, Poetic Expression, Postmodernism and Aesthetics), Modern Japanese Aesthetics discusses the momentous efforts made by Japanese thinkers to master, assimilate, and transform Western philosophical systems to discuss their own literary and artistic heritage. Readers are introduced to debates between the unconditional supporters of Western ideas and more cautious approaches to the literary and artistic past. The institutionalization of aesthetics as an academic subject is discussed and the work of some of Japan's most distinguished professional aestheticians and literary critics is included. Modern Japanese Aesthetics is a sophisticated and energetic volume on the process that led to the construction of aesthetic categories used by Japanese and, later, Western scholars in discussing Japanese literature and arts. This important work will be essential reading for anyone concerned with the formation! of a critical vocabulary in Japan.

This is a perfect book to read for an overview of Japanese Aesthetics. My only complaint is that it is a bit confusing and difficult to read in a few areas. But generally speaking it is a wonderful book to own for anyone interested in Japansese art, etc.

In the hearts of the elaborate Renaissance gardens of Italy, writes essayist John Hanson Mitchell, lie small patches of untended ground, overgrown with moss and tangled undergrowth, called boscos. These wild patches are there to remind us of the untamed country that lies far outside the city walls, the abode of wild animals, where wilderness experiences are to be had for the adventurous traveler. A veteran of many such experiences, Mitchell counsels that wilderness does not teach us much about how to live in and with nature; such lessons lie closer to home, for, he writes, wildness "lurks in the wilder corners of suburbia, or even in cities, and exists as potential even in some of the most barren, devastated environments."

In The Wildest Place on Earth, Mitchell travels to Mediterranean gardens, writing of their meaning and history. Heeding his own counsel, he also sticks close to his own home, restoring a hardscrabble New England farm called Scratch Flat, building mazes and trellises, and exploring the lessons that making a garden offer a student of the natural world. Though his efforts at environmental philosophizing tend to be underdone, his dedication to gardening is evident, and his account of that hard but rewarding work may inspire like-minded readers to take up their trowels. --Gregory McNamee

                Book Description

A captivating journey to uncover the essence of wilderness, by one of this country's most original nature writers.

In The Wildest Place on Earth Mitchell sets out on a journey to uncover the essence of wilderness. Instead of traveling to remote, untamed parts of the world, Mitchell ends up exploring the green realms of his childhood and the gardens of Italy. He is pulled inward and toward home, back to what Thoreau called "contact"--an abiding, enduring, and daily connection with the world. He comes to realize that the wildest place may be right in his own backyard.

                  Book Description

The Natural History Museum in London is one of Britain's finest examples of late Victorian architecture at its exuberant height. A decorative tour de force, it was conceived by Alfred Waterhouse, whose attention to detail in the creation of this masterpiece is legendary. The terracotta mouldings of flora and fauna adorning both interior and exterior of the building rival in richness and variety the equally renowned contents of the Museum's collections.
This book presents a history of the development of Waterhouse's designs for these mouldings, setting them in the context of his work as a whole and of their manufacture. It acknowledges his courage in selecting the generally frowned upon medium of terracotta for the execution of the ornament, rather than the established and respected material of carved stone. It also provides a unique document of his exquisite pencil drawings for the individual blocks: although many of the drawings were destroyed when their practical use had expired, over 130 still survive, and are held in the Museum's Library. Seldom seen and never reproduced in their entirety, they bear witness to the fact that Waterhouse was not only a skilled architect but also an extremely accomplished draughtsman. This is a unique portrait of an ornamental scheme which influenced a generation at the end of the nineteenth century.

A darkly comic fable of brotherly love and family identity is Suzan-Lori Parks latest riff on the way we are defined by history. The play tells the story of Lincoln and Booth, two brothers whose names were given to them as a joke, foretelling a lifetime of sibling rivalry and resentment. Haunted by the past, the brothers are forced to confront the shattering reality of their future.

Ms. Park's play is one of the best plays I have read in a long time. her character's jump out at you and from the first page you are hooked into their lives. It focuses on the relationship between two bothers named Lincoln and Booth. The play has twists and turns and there is always a sense of danger looming. She develps both the characters and story in a very cleaver way, and uses metaphors for what a black man in today's white America may sometimes feel. As a white women I do not know what those feelings are like, but this play taught me what they may be like. read this play. It says something very important that we all should know.

Here is New York street Americana...
a tragedy of the black shattered family.
Two brothers abandoned by their father and mother
who have shifted and grafted on their own.
                  Lincoln shot by brother Booth...
                  Cain killed by Abel.
It reminded me very much of the Steinbeck short novel.
This play is a work not lovable but true.

ok, the first 90 or so pages of this play are great, i like the dynamics, the writting is good, the relationship between the brothers is well portrayed. Now this is a contemporary shakespearean tragedy, so the ending is pretty obvious, and your supposed to figure out what happens pretty early in the play, if you still dont want to know however stop reading.

THE ENDING SUCKS, it reminds me of the orignal ending of clerks, in which Dante dies in a robbery, Kevin Smith discovered that the only reason he ended it that way was because he didnt know how to end his movie and wasnt tallented enough to write a good ending yet. Now i think parks is tallented, but this could have been better. The manner in which everything unravells is just not believeable. Anyone can end a tragic play with the guy everyone knew was going to die dying. Now it takes much more tallent to not kill him off. When a main character dies in the last couple moments it sends an emotional wave at the audience, death always has that effect, they dont take the time to analyze things because they are overwhelmed with the emotion of the experience. Just because it evicts an emotion everyone comes to the conclussion that it was good, smart. Killing off a character is a great way to end a trajedy if you arent inspired enough to think of anything more tragic than death. I just finished reading 20 minutes ago so im not going to trash it anymore, upon further review i might warm up to it. As for now though, there is one major error in contintuity really that ruined the ending for me, if you catch it youl probably be left scratching your head too, and unless a light bulb goes off and i figure out what just happened, i cant suggest this book.

4 out of 5 stars Gritty Angry Boy Drama.......2004-08-04

Parks' play is a well crafted drama about two brothers' lives smoothly built around their relationship with 3-card monte. She does a strong job of handling the darker aspects of sibling rivalry, poverty, and family. I mostly enjoyed Topdog/Underdog for its raw toughness and the way the two-character structure brought out the inner workings and different demons of the two brothers. While not the greatest play ever, it is a good, solid dramatic work and definitely worth reading.

                  1 out of 5 stars Stinky Dog.......2004-07-01

About the only thing I wanted to do after seeing this was demand my money back. This has to be one of the most unimaginative plays I have ever seen. It reminded me of a really bad Saturday night live parody meets Friday part 2 but at the end the writer tried to make it poingnant by adding a death. I don't know why this was even printed. If I was a tree that lost my life to print this play I would come back as a ghost a haunt the publisher till his dying day.
