The steroid / nuclear receptor superfamily is a large and growing group of transcription factors that are studied by a large and varied number of basic and clinical researchers. The first two chapters describe the evolutionary biology of the superfamily and explain how to clone and characterize new receptors. Chapter 3 shows how to identify the ligands of novel receptors and chapter 4 explains the kinetic analysis of receptor interactions. In chapter 5, the reader is guided through the functional characterization of coactivators using microinjection. The next section covers receptor phosphorylation, ligand regulated transcription, and hormone resistance syndromes. Chapter 9 describes the in vitro assembly of Hsp90 complexes and chapter 10 explains yeast as a model system for looking at receptor function. The final chapter shows how heterologous proteins can be regulated by fusion to the hormone binding domain of a receptor. This is a great book full of interesting facts and presented in an interesting way. It was very engaging for the whole family. I read some of it on the way to Thanksgiving dinner and no one wanted to stop reading when we had to take a break! We liked this so much we bought more Don't Know Much books.

This is a great informational book about the Pilgrims. Recommended for older children and teachers preparing their lessons.

Avant-garde Designer........2005-06-29

Stark was born in Paris in 1949. His spectacular design ideas sparked off one sensation after another since the early 1980s. He had already done interior design for Paris nightclubs. His first company was started in 1968 producing inflatable objects and, in 1979, he founded Starck Product. He ventured out in 1982 to Dallas Texas.

Then he did a lot of work on French President Mitterand's private apartment in the Elyse Palace. This book shows photos of the products and buildings he has designed before retiring. He even taught the reader some French: Le Civisme Est D'avamt Garde means "To be a good citizen is to be avant-garde; L'amour Est Une Espece Ezvoiede Disparition means "Love is an endangered species."

In 1997 he gave the control tower at Bordeaux-Merignac Airport an ultra modern look, as he did the Beer Hall in Tokyo, restaurants in Hong Kong and Madrid, Spain, and a building in Japan. He was very versatile with his ultra-modern gadgets. The bear toy on the cover is called The Bear Band; now, why he left off the right foot is perplexing.

In addition to all the pictures the book is handwritten by Starck in answer to questions posed to him by Fay Sweet who put the book together for him. She has written ALESSI: ART AND POETRY and some architecture books.

He is quoted as saying, "It is not not enough to make things of beauty; they must also be good." He created a series of "Good Goods," which he describes as "nonproducts for the nonconsumer."
His irreverent humor and showmanship (pranks) show him to be a hippie from the Sixties. But a good one -- what's with all the eyes on inside covers, another perplexing thing. Must be French.

Inspirational.......2000-01-31

This man is amazing. He's an all around great designer with morals and ethics in today's society. I bought this book as well as 2 other Fay Sweet books. She gets at the heart of the designer's philosophical views and concepts for design.

Worth the money?.......2000-01-09

Well, not quite. This book is more a catalog of his designs than a real musthave. My advise: search the internet for his designs and contact the manufacturer for a (free) catalog. Then you'll probably have the same. By the way, his designs are great!

Repeat, Repeat, Repeat.......1999-05-06

All these books pertaining to Starck are basically the same. Just imagine a book on Starck pertaining to his real magic: Hotel / Restaurant Interior's, dovetailed with great photo details. For example a complete overview of his Hotel Designs for Ian Schrager. Theres a book that would give you the same feeling you have when entering one of these hotels, that being; "You can check out but you can never leave!"

So Many Hostas So Little Planet.......2000-02-24

Buy this for the plant list. It is easy to spend more than the book price on a modest bunch of Hostas at some garden center, or a lot more, if you are in a big hurry. Grenfell tells us more than those pretty tags do, and even says some of the things they are likely to neglect. I would wish that she had been more explicit about the range of what one is likely to get in the way of plant sizes as one tries to compare garden center, nursery, and catalog prices and outcomes. Hosta "August Moon," p. 99, for example, is a wonderful plant here, pretty much as described, but the late-season potful I got at a garden center in the late 1980's took more than five years to get there; "Large," from what had looked, "Miniature" to "Small" when I bought it. The author may wish to pretend that the people she wishes to address do not haunt the close-out tables at regional garden centers and discount retailers or catalog web sites, but those are places where good information can help you find the good stuff. Likewise for dividing the mature clumps of unlabeled Hostas in the garden of the old house my sister bought in 1998. (Yes! Those purple shoots are Hosta "Patriot," p. 130.) Grenfell grows her Hostas in England, where USDA Zone 6 is thought to be rugged and my Zone 5 is thought to be a howling Russian or alpine wilderness, so she misses out on the strengths that Dr. Rieth was able to deploy so effectively in the cold of Upper Penninsula Michigan, but the advice she gives on growing perfectly awesome Hostas,in Chapter Five, is worth paying attention to.

Grenfell pulls in essays by other experts to cover some of the territory she is not entirely familiar with, but the coordination between the text she wrote and what they wrote is not as tight as I would wish. When Dr. Pollock addresses the H. plantaginea's need for heat and some sun on p.86, he does not contrast North American performance, where long hot summers bloom them right up into Zone 4, to the English performance that Grenfell reports as; unlikely to bloom most years because the growing season is so much cooler. Less careful readers might follow her advice to plant warm, and end up with plants that get frost bitten for coming up too early, and then fried in July and August, or even June.

(Well, it is long and talky. Editing is ok, to be sure, but I do like to put some content in to support my assertions. It would have been helpful to have a word count utility pop up here or in the Perview version so I could get a better sense of how far I have gone here. Paragraphing would be nice too.)

This book covered all aspects of growing hosta........1999-06-26

I read every book on hostas that I could find. When I read Grenfell's book I knew it was one I needed to own, and I purchased it. It covered ever aspect of growing hostas. Elemaniting a lot of bad hearsay advise. The information is consice and easy to read. The technical information is all there as well as information for novice gardners.

There is a well written chapter on propagation that will help any gardener increase their number of plants. Its not just for professionals.

Excellent subject coverage without being too technical........1999-01-01

Just the book I was looking for. After collecting and growing hostas for some years now, Diana Genfell's book zeroed in on the questions I still had. It's a perfect companion to Paul Aden's hosta book, but if I had to own just one--this book would be it.

A GARDENING MUST HAVE!.......1998-03-29

I LIKE THIS BOOK. CLEARLY WRITTEN, VERY INFORMATIVE IN THE AREAS SHE CHOSE TO INCLUDE IN THE BOOK, BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED. CAN'T SAY ENOUGH GOOD ABOUT THE BOOK.
