Book Description
There’s much more than chocolate cake and waltzes lurking behind the porticoes of Vienna’s sprawling Baroque palaces and in the mezzanines of its elegant 19th-century apartment houses. Time Out Vienna showcases the city’s heady history and its contemporary sophistication. The city's signature fin-de-siècle architectural marvels are described in depth, as are the splendors of the Danube waterfront. Informed local writers profile the best of the city’s lively restaurant scene, chilled club culture, historic cafés, and restful wine taverns; as well as accommodations for every budget from simple pensiones to historic hotels. With complete coverage of the city’s celebration of the 250th anniversary of Mozart’s birth in 2006, this edition also contains updated maps and rechecked listings, along with new sidebars, photographs, and a culture chapter for context.
Customer Reviews:
Good Guide but Full of Egregious Typos.......2006-02-07
Good all-around guide, but the Michelin Green Guide to Vienna is more comprehensive (although without the hotel, restaurant and shopping listings). This one is a good one volume all-round guide, but it has stupid mistakes such as saying that Vienna's largest cemetary is the Karl-Marx-Hof (it's the Zentralfriedhof). The blue pages with practical advice are excellent as are the maps. Sometimes the tone is a bit snide which is more than a little off-putting.
Enter at your own risk.
Previous Edition MUCH Better.......2004-09-22
The current edition of Time Out Vienna is about half the size of the previous one. The previous edition was wonderful, with much more information on cultural sites, museums, cafes, etc. What remains in this over-edited -- yet not, by the way, cheaper -- edition is basically a list of hotels and shops. The few museums, etc., mentioned are wedged into neighborhood 'sightseeing' chapters, as though the main factor in choosing a museum were locale. The end result seems quite shallow, even cynical, and a bit sad, apparently aimed at weekending yuppies on breezy consumption jaunts rather than travelers truly interested in the city. Further, this edition carries much outdated and erroneous information; many of the listed restaurants have closed down, and directions and opening hours are grossly wrong, as if the writers failed to visit the spots recommended. The only value of the new edition is providing prices in euros. If you can, get a used version of the previous edition -- the one with a lion's head fountain on the cover -- and figure out conversion rates yourself.
let's go vienna.......2004-06-19
I was very happy with this book - I was interested mostly in shopping and restaurants, since I had already done all the touristy type stuff in a previous visit to Vienna. It lists things by district, the maps are easy to follow, it has both an alphabetical and street index, and it is small enough to carry around. The restaurant reviews were right on - I went by this guide for about 10 meals/drinks/desserts (all of which were great), and helped me discover places I would have overlooked. It includes restaurants for ALL budgets. The shopping guide helped me find niche shops and boutiques, not just chains, and also a lot of the stuff that I discovered on my own and LOVED was already in the book once I looked back to check on it. Even though I didn't use the sightseeing section as extensively as the restaurant and shopping guide, it is superpacked with background info and pictures. I picked this book over lonely planet and let's go since it was the most recently published of the 3, and also because I regularly purchased the TimeOut magazines when I lived in London, and I feel like I really got my money's worth.

Book Description
A new city guide to the capital of Austria.
The First Edition of the Vienna Guide has been written and researched by people who live and work in Austria's imperial capital. More than just a tourist guide, it provides a lively and critical assessment of the city's many sights, hotels, restaurants, clubs, bars, and shops. From exploring the city's many museums--from Freud to folklore and fine arts--and imbibing in its legendary coffeehouses (and finding the perfect Sacher torte) to hearing the best that Europe has to offer in classical music and venturing to Salzburg or along the Danube, the Vienna Guide will prove an invaluable companion.
Customer Reviews:
inaccuracy and poor editing.......2007-06-12
This book has been produced without due editorial care and attention - the index is arbitrary and incomplete, and I found many incorrect cross-references. A factual inaccuracy: Arnold Schoenberg's grave in the Zentralfriedhof is not in section 33C, but in 32C. Nor is it organised in a way that makes it particularly easy to use; in my view, the principle of organisation used in Michelin Guides is superior.
some bad editorial decisions.......2003-03-20
Captions are sometimes nonexistent for the photos and graphics, and often too smarmy and cute to be anything but misleading. Discussion of Vienna's museum of criminology included a shockingly gory photo of a dismembered corpse that took up 1/3 of a page: nothing I'd want to encounter again.
I threw this book away and bought the Eyewitness Travel Guide to Vienna instead: a very elegant, richly graphical, dependably tasteful series. I will never buy Time Out again!
Paid for itself many times over........2002-12-16
The Time Out Vienna guide made my trip much more enjoyable with it's insider tips and witty humor, even through it was published over 2 years ago.
The information in the guide was even informative to my travel partner who has been to Vienna hundred's of times over 50 years.
I will ALWAYS travel with a Time Out guide in the future.
Buy this book!.......2001-06-10
If you only purchase on guide book to Vienna get this one.
It's very detailed and very honest. It's fun to read even if you're not going to Vienna
Highly recommended!!
Impressive, even for a native..........2000-12-20
Being Viennese and a lonely planet fan, I must clearly say, that this is "the best" travel guide for Vienna, I've ever browsed through.
Granted, information about the rich Viennese history could fill bookshelves, but this guide does not only provide a brief, but sound historical information, but also a bunch of contemporary hints.
Moreover, it tries to go a little off the beaten path, by not only focussing on the "hardcore must visit" spots. I could not have described some places/cafes/clubs better to my foreign friends than this book.

Knowledgeable and useful upper-level survey book.......2006-04-12
Joanne de Pennington's Modern America has neatly filled the need that I had for an upper-level American History source book for my International Baccalaureate seniors. Every page is packed with useful, illustrative quotes, photos, political cartoons, and effective analysis. There are also some review materials for each unit that are also helpful at insuring a student's mastery of what was presented. The book ably covers the United States from the end of the Civil War to the end of the Cold War. While expensive (it is a British- printed book), it is well worth the cost and the time it will take to have one shipped. If I had to rely on only four books to teach my classes, this would be one of the four without a question.

One of the Best Type Books.......2000-07-26
If you are a graphic designer and wake up one day thinking:"Well, I feel like spending $45 bucks today", you should seriously consider this.
Edited by Roger Walton, this beautiful publication comes to rescue us from the sameness and the boring "commercial type book" type of thing. Beautifuly designed by Gabriella Le Grazie, Stefan Kraus and Iain Cadby, there's nothing else to do, but to put our hands together to this singular and unique peace. It brings together a huge variety of international work, from corporate id to experimental unpublished work. The wide range of publicated material feeds our good-type-design hunger. Lures us to create better and more exciting solutions. Its content displays, once and for all: style without content doesn't live longer in the graphic design business.
What a great way to spend $45 bucks!

Book Description
Spend the day with Boone, a search-and-rescue dog, as he visits a school, searches and rescues a lost child, apprehends a criminal, and much, much more.
Customer Reviews:
Real Glad to have found Boone.......2005-11-19
A lot of children's books have been written to inform kids about all sorts of professions, from nurses and deaf percussionists to construction workers and police officers. It is hard to find, though, a book that really takes a look at those animals which work to help improve the lives of the people in their community. Fortunately, Chris Williams has seen that void and has stepped up to the plate with his marvelous series.
One of the best things about this book is how rich it is in information. Mr. Williams has done a great job in researching what a search and rescue dog actually does and what kind of training these animals must undergo. It's also quite admirable that he takes the time to specifically cite certain websites in the back of the book. If a student desired to find out more about the subject, _Boone_ is an excellent place for them to begin their research.
Not only that, but it is just a really great story for kids! The writing is crisp and clean. It isn't told in an overbearing or condescending manner; there's enough to keep the kid's attention and interest so that learning can actually be fun.
I have a younger brother and sister, and they've really enjoyed Boone over and over.
Great Second Book in the Series........2005-11-14
I bought the first book in the series, "One Incredible Dog, Lady", for my Grandchildren and they loved it! It has become one of their favorites. I was glad to see the second book was available but couldn't find it in the local book stores. Thanks Amazon! True to the series, "One Incredible Dog, Boone" is terrific. Can't wait to see what the author and illustrator come up with next...
Boone is another "Incredible" dog!.......2005-11-10
I never knew that Search and Rescue dogs did so many useful and interesting things. That is until I read ONE INCREDIBLE DOG! BOONE. Although I think girls will like this book, I feel that boys will appreciate it more--it has plenty of action! The illustrations are very good too; a unique use of black and white ink!
Having read both books in the ONE INCREDIBLE DOG series (the first being LADY), I like this one best. 5 stars!
Informative!.......2005-09-04
Daniel Boone is a bloodhound. But he is much more! He is a search-and-rescue dog. In One Incredible Dog! Boone, the reader experiences a day in the life of Boone. From a classroom where the children discuss Boone's job to the hunt for and successful recovery of a missing child, a lost grandfather and the apprehension of a thief, we follow Boone and learn so much about the importance of a search-and-rescue animals.
The black and white illustrations by Judith Friedman are appealing. This book is part of a new Early Reader Series that honors dogs that do incredible things for people. It is geared for children ages 4-8 and is a remarkable book that will not only educate but entertain. I know my grandchildren will enjoy this book. I certainly did.
One Incredible Dog! Boone is a grand read for those special children in your life.

Author Michael Weishan is an expert in recreating gardens of early America; his mission is to resurrect the styles of the 18th and 19th century, when settlers in the New World were trying to distinguish their landscapes from the British style so beloved by gardeners today. This book is particularly targeted toward owners of Colonial- or Victorian-style homes, and the narration has a bit of a highbrow New England feel to it in lines like, "our founding fathers, men so dedicated to a controlled system of checks and balances that they fought and won a war to establish their principles, built gardens imbued with the same spirit." Weishan emphasizes "order and balance," and he wishes the '50s had never happened, with those boring perfect lawns and hardware-store perennials.
Throughout The New Traditional Garden there are evocative passages about locating the "ghosts" within the garden: covered-over plantings, perennials that have reappeared each spring for decades. "Be on the lookout for something old in the garden," Weishan writes. "You never know when it may teach you something new." For gardeners who find that working the soil is a nostalgic process that's as much about uncovering the past as creating a future, this is an expert guide. It includes an exhaustive historic plant list, dating the introduction of various species back to the 1700s. Weishan's ultimate goal is to remind us of early American attitudes of "stewardship," wherein we see ourselves as tenants of the land, caretakers, not tyrannical owners who must make our mark at any cost. --Emily White
Book Description
The unique combination of utility and beauty that has been the glory of the American garden for the past three hundred years is once again blooming, as home owners rediscover the magic of individual, homemade, horticultural splendor. Yes, the golden age of gardening is dawning, and much of the current enthusiasm for creating distinctive, unforgettable designs was spurred by nationally respected landscape architect and horticulturist Michael Weishan. His impeccable taste, common sense, and comprehensive knowledge of America's gardening history make him the ideal advisor for today's gardeners.
Respectful of the past and mindful of contemporary needs and lifestyles, Weishan lays down the underlying principles for creating--either from scratch or from the ghost of a lost garden--a domestic landscape with purpose and personality. He explains with utmost clarity how to
- Discover exactly which type and style of garden is right for you
- Analyze the archaeology of your old garden and recreate it from the past
- Arrange walls and fences for beauty and privacy
- Transform front, side, and back yards into one harmonious environment
- Lay out graceful walks and drives; rescue an orphaned front door
- Master the disciplined symmetry of a formal garden, the exuberance of a Victorian yard, or the charming randomness of a cottage garden
- Establish a mini-orchard featuring delicious rediscovered varieties of apples, peaches, cherries, and other fruits and berries
Lavishly designed with more than two hundred illustrations, The New Traditional Garden also includes a compendium of historic plants, detailed plans for great antique gardens, a directory of the most beautiful historic gardens in America, a comprehensive list of garden suppliers, and hundreds of other features to help you create a garden with elegance and character.
From the Trade Paperback edition.
Customer Reviews:
A different kind of gardening book.......2000-07-24
The New Traditional Garden is unlike most books in my garden library. It begins with a wonderful history of gardening for the first settlers and includes much garden history. The book is enjoyable and inspiring as suggested by the other reviewers. But I also found it to be a bit disorganized in its attempt to present a different side of gardening. For example, each chapter includes a subject such a Unity, or Practicality with some interesting discourse relating yesterday's gardens and lifestyle to today's. There is a Historic garden featured, certain plant culture is discussed and a How-to and perhaps a driveway makeover etc. are thrown in for good measure. I would rather have seen more flow to the book's organization, but the author is a publisher of a magazine and perhaps this format, back and forth between subjects, keeps a reader interested. Also I understand the author's viewpoints in the chapter on Stewardship. What better place to state your opinions and call others to take political action than in your own book? But this is not something that I look for in a guide to traditional gardening. As with every gardening book that I have, there are favorite sections which I refer to again and again, and other sections which are of no use to me. Overall, this book is different and takes a "new" look at the "old" things of gardening. It has earned a spot on my crowded book shelf. I especially plan to refer to the extensive Historic plant compendium when I expand my garden (again) this fall.
An informative and inspiring look at gardening and gardens........1999-10-15
I picked up a copy of The New Traditional Garden and was delighfully surprised. Instead of a typical modern gardening book with the same old options of plants and landscaping styles, Michael Weishan explores gardening within an historical context which gives the reader a new perspective on what a garden could and should be. Being a child of the 50's I had never considered what the gardens of our forefathers and mothers had meant to them, nor had I understood the value of taking the environment of the garden into account, including the structures on the property, and creating a unified, holistic, and rich presentation. I especially enjoyed the examples of what not to do (and found I had done quite of few of those!) I also found that it was hard to read the book for any length of time without becoming so inspired that I wanted to get out the gardening tools and set to work immediately. Thank you Mr. Weishan for shedding a whole new light on gardening and gardens!
The New Bible for Traditional Gardeners.......1999-09-22
Weishan has created an astounding book for anyone interested in traditional gardening styles, old house gardens, or anyone who simply wants to improve the design of their garden. Extremely well-written and researched, this book is a pleasure to read even for the gardening novice. Truly one of the best gardening books of the decade.
An excelent summary of the "how toos" of creating a garden ........1999-09-20
Finally we have a difinitive work on the traditional American garden. This book returns to the beauty and practicality of the early American garden and tells you how to create it. While you get the information on all the aspects that go into this creation you are not overloaded with a lot of unnecessary planting instructions. I was very impressed with the great multitude of pictures and references and the vast amount of knowledge they contained. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to the new and the old gardener and to anyone that has an interest in things that grow for both food and beauty.

Book Description
From the eighth to the tenth century A.D., Greek scientific and philosophical works were translated wholesale into Arabic. This activity resulted in the incorporation and reorganization of the classical heritage in the new civilization which, using Arabic, spread with Islam. A Greek and Arabic Lexicon is the first systematic attempt to present in an analytical and rationalized way our knowledge of the vocabulary of the translations. It is based on the glossaries included in text editions, both published and unpublished, and on other materials gleaned from various sources. The work is published in fascicules of 128 pages of lexical entries plus indexes of the Greek-Arabic correspondences, of Greek proper names and transliterated words, of variant Greek and Arabic passages, and of the Greek authors cited in the context passages. From the second fascicule onwards the indexes will be cumulative. A Greek and Arabic Lexicon is an indispensable reference tool for the study and understanding of Arabic scientific and philosophical language and literature. It facilitates the preparation of future editions of Arabic texts translated directly from the Greek, as well as of works originally composed in Arabic but based on the translations. It contributes to our knowledge of the vocabulary and syntax of Classical and Middle Arabic, of the thought and methods of the translators and of the nature of the translation activity into Arabic methods of the translators and of the nature of the translation activity into Arabic as a whole, and of the way a new vocabulary may develop in an existing language. Moreover, the Greek-Arabic glossary in general and the index of variant Greek passages in particular will assist in future editions of the Greek text of the works translated into Arabic. These provide information, in a way that can be used by classical scholars who do not know Arabic, on the readings of the manuscripts which were used by the Arab translators and which antedate by more than two centuries the Greek manuscripts actually extant. The work further contributes to our knowledge of the vocabulary of Classical and Middle Greek and of the reception and reading of classical Greek works in late antiquity and pre-Photian Byzantine literature.

Is the fundamental relationship between an actor and an audience an equal and active one, or is it a situation that encourages passivity and division? This is the question at the heart of Augusto Boal's revolutionary Theatre of the Oppressed, originally published in 1979. Boal, a Brazilian artist and activist, has written a work that challenges the very premise of Western theater, starting with Aristotle and the first dramatists, and explores what social constructs lie behind the traditional theater form. Then, having explained such often invoked (but rarely scrutinized) terms as imitation, tragedy, and justice, he puts forward a new type of drama that bridges the long-existing gap between theater and politics. Central to his thesis is an attempt to bring spectators into an active role with the drama, encouraging them to comment on the social situations they see presented and suggest potentials for change. Other chapters explore the writings of Hegel and Brecht, along with a lengthy analysis of one of the most profound political thinkers to ever pen a play, Machiavelli and his bitter comedy Mandragola. Boal's book is a challenging one for American actors often politically naive and heavily schooled in the traditions of Stanislavsky-based "naturalism," but this text is vital reading for activists, progressives, and all artists trying to effect social change. --John Longenbaugh

Blow MY MIND!.......2007-05-14
Buy this. I know that isn't a sentence but wow. This is a life changing work. If you care the minutest bit about theatre, mankind, and the future of both (together and seperate) then feast here. Also, a side benifit is listening to Boal argue AGAINST The Poetics. Good stuff. The begining is a little slow because he begins by very carefully setting up examples and definitions before he begins to explain his actual work and theory. This is nessisary and impressive (citing some ancient Greek philosophers to whom I had never been introduced). I think this book handed me some special x-ray glasses to look through the clothing of our contemporary American theatre. Get yourself a pare.
Extra Credit.......2007-01-13
This should be required reading in our theatre schools, but is generally relegated to the extra credit section of additional reading. Boal expounds some brilliant concepts that should be considered by all contempoary theatre practitioners. Serious theatre goers should read this text as well.
Marxism and Theatre.......2007-01-11
Boal is insane, but not nearly as much as Brecht or Artaud. Boal is essentially a communist that approaches all art from the social-conflict paradigm of sociology (Marxism). He tends to argue that most theatre is made to coerce, and that much of it is made with the power/elite in mind (that is the mildest description I can give you without starting a debate). Whether you agree with Boal or not, his chapters dealing with the Coercive Aristotelian Tragedies are highly educational just in the factual sense of what he presents. If you have any interest in classical or Greek theatre this is definitely a must read. He explains the dynamics of Greek theatre so well that it can almost be used as a text book.
Inspiration for the Artist.......2000-01-14
Perhaps the pursuit of art in this world of massive economic, social and legal inequality is simply privileged playing and bemusement? Perhaps art has no valued, but as marketable, profitable entertainment? Or, perhaps art (and specifically theatre) can actually change the world? Boal is not the first to speak of theater's revolutionary quality, but unlike his predecessors he takes to the street with his theory. Tracing the relationship between the producers of theatre and its audience, Boal exposes the historical oppression imposed by the dramatic machine/conventions of the past. In its place he offers theoretical and practical examples of his "People's theatre" (i.e., paratheatre or interactive theatre). For all seriously minded artist this is a must read. Especially if you wish to understand your role in artistic production and also wish to make a difference with you work.

Don't got TOO excited.......2007-05-14
Not the book I had hoped it woud be. Though I do not have my copy infront of me from what I can remember I wasn't too impressed. After delving a little deeper into the book it became clear that I wasn't going to find what I was looking for (clear examples of what Boal does) in my research. This seemed to be one of those books where someone wanted to be published so they "edited" a bunch of articles written by others so everybody gets a book under their belt and everyone wine. Not so fast future book buyer. You don't win. Stick to the books pened by Boal himself. He is actually a wonderfull author, very clear, and you will probibly find answers to all your questions. Start with Boal first. This isn't a bad book! This is just not a great place to start if you are just discovering Boal.

Book Description
Toward a Theater of the Oppressed is an engaging study of the dramaturgy of contemporary British playwright John Arden and the political implications of his work. Arden made his debut on the London stage in the wake of a powerful new wave of young, "angry" drama in England during the late 1950s. Javed Malick argues that in contrast to contemporaries like John Osborne, Harold Pinter, and Arnold Wesker, Arden offered a radically different approach to drama and theater, employing a long-neglected writing style that derived from pre-bourgeois popular traditions.
Malick situates Arden's dramaturgy in the wider context of the radical alternative tradition in Western drama, drawing connections to Brecht, Piscator, the radical playwrights of the 1960s. He then explores the formal structure, ideological implications, and historical significance of Arden's work, treating his stage plays as one dramaturgically coherent opus- from the early Waters of Babylon to his and Margaretta D'Arcy's ambitious trilogy, The Island of the Mighty. Finally, he discusses the last phase of Arden and D'Arcy's political and artistic development, which led them to turn their backs on the professional theater circuit. He argues that Arden's rejection of the institutional stage was the logical outcome of his persistent search for alternative forms of political theater.
Toward a Theater of the Oppressed will be invaluable reading for those interested in modern drama, political theater, and popular performance, as well as students of contemporary British drama.
Javed Malick is Reader in English, Khalsa College, University of Delhi, India.

Product Description
This is a production to restore our faith in live theater, and a play to restore our interst in new theater. Jose Rivera, an American playwright born in Puerto Rico, wrote EACH DAY DIES WITH SLEEP. It's real subject is the primitive human struggle between animal instincts and civilized order. The language- poetic, intense, heightened, rude, stunted, funny, by turns--is always vivid. Jose Rivera was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in 1955, and now lives in Los Angeles. His style has been called "Magic Realism" (a term first concocted by American literary scholars to describe the work of Latin-American writers such as Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Alejo Carpentier, Jorge Amado, Jose Luis Borges and Carlos Fuentes, all of whom tap into a texture of existence seemingly more exotic and meaningful than that recognized by busy Americans.) Rivera resists the label, insisting that all aspects of life are magical if looked at from the right perspective. "It's all in the details," maintains Rivera. "If you choose the details of everyday life carefully enough, and examine them with enough clarity, they can seem magical on their own.
