Book Description
Since 1956, when the late Boughton Cobb wrote his field guide to ferns, this book, unchanged in all the years since, has become the classic on the subject. Now the New England Wild Flower Society (NEWFS) has completely updated the text and added 100 color photographs. The incredibly beautiful full-page line drawings by the late Laura Louise Foster have been reproduced from the original art. New subjects include a section on habitats and conservation, a glossary of botanical terms, and a chapter on gardening with ferns. The New England Wild Flower Society is the nation's oldest organization devoted to the conservation of wild plants. It recently received a number of grants to celebrate its "Year of the Fern." NEWFS books published by Houghton Mifflin are Wildflowers and Native Trees, Shrubs, and Vines, both by William Cullina.
Customer Reviews:
A superlative field guide with gardening information too.......2005-10-15
Would a field guide like this make a good holiday gift for a naturalist or gardener? Absolutely-if I didn't own it already it would be my number one choice. This is the best researched field guide I've ever seen. It is very very satisfying and is going to become a must-have for anyone who hikes the northeast or would like to garden with ferns, and for all botany students of the region. A book like this is more than just a guide-it trains the eye to open up to an entire world of subtle differences in nature. There is a kind of poetry in this guide usually not seen in this type of writing-BRILLIANT! Get one soon to catch the ferns in fall color-or do a little armchair gardening over the winter.

Book Description
"The image of a pristine isolation has been almost as common in research on foragers as in the popular media. Land filled with Flies is a sustanined argument against such views. Wilmsen marshals an enormous quantity of historical, archival, archeological, ethnographic, and survey data on the Kalahari Zhu to show how far from the reality these images are, how they have their own historical provenance, how they have been analytically distorting, and how they have proven politically pernicious for living groups like the Zhu."—Pauline Peters, Science
"[A] major work. . . . Anthropologists will, and should, use Wilmsen's meticulously detailed study to revise their early lectures in the introductory course, and no future study of African 'foragers' should ignore it."—Parker Shipton, American Anthropologist
"An impressive book. . . . The reader need only read the first few pages to judge both the quality and ambitiousness of the work. . . . Essential reading."—David R. Penna, Africa Today
Customer Reviews:
anthropology majors and curious world citizens.......2004-04-18
this book is thought provoking in that it challenges us to question notions of reality disseminated to us by experts and media organizations. What guides analytical perceptions about the world and the people in it, is a topic that is attempted-I believe successfully- in Edwin Wilmsen's Book: Land Filled With Flies. History is crucial in the development and presentation of realities of existences and Wilmsen uncovers these factors of construction. The identity, under "construction" is the "Bushmen" of the Kalahari. If you like to dismantle structures of power and strip bare pre-conceived notions of perception, then you will like this book. I got all this just from reading the first and last chapter. Even the intro was sizzling. If you like biting remarks and criticisms, he pleases by exposing his anthropological colleagues as accomplices in the shaping of a destructive categorization of a disadvantaged people, the "fictitious Bushmen"

Book Description
Whether designing a brand new home, or updating an old one, the vast array of choices and decisions can be overwhelming. This book is a clever portable guidebook to help novice designers and decorators pull together their plans and design dream homes. Packed with fresh ideas, this book contains beautiful, full-color images of professionally designed interiors, as well as handy, roll-up-your-sleeves workbook sections for everything from the big picture (assessing what you have and considering whether to add or refurbish) to checking off the small but critical details (how to choose paints, fabrics, and layouts).
Customer Reviews:
Best as a secondary source.......2002-12-22
The benefit of this book will depend on your use for it.
Pluses:
This book has good questions to ask yourself as you go through the interior design process. Every aspect is covered from furniture to flooring to lighting. This book also shows a nice range of styles.
Minuses:
The main drawback is that some of the pictures seem out-of-focus and/or small. Also, there are no projects, which may or may not be a minus, depending on your purpose for buying the book.
Recommendation:
if you are looking for a book to organize your thoughts and give you useful tips on decorating, this is a decent one. However, if you are looking to be inspired by photographs, you might want to skip the book.

Book Description
Three-time Pulitzer Prize-winner and recipient of three Tony Awards, Edward Albee was awarded the Gold Medal in Drama from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1980, and in 1996 he received both the Kennedy Center Honors and the National Medal of Arts. Ben Brantley of The New York Times has described him as one of the few genuinely great living American writers. Now, The Overlook Press is proud to announce publication of the first volume of a three-volume collection of all of this master's plays, some of which have been out of print for years.
Volume I contains the eight plays written by Albee during his first decade as a playwright, from 1958 through 1965. These range from the four brilliant one-act plays with which he exploded on the New York theater scene in 1958-59 (The Zoo Story, The Death of Bessie Smith, The Sandbox, and The American Dream) to his early masterpiece, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1961-62). They also include two adaptations from notable American novels (The Ballad of the Sad Café and Malcolm) and Albee's mysteriously fascinating Tiny Alice. The volume includes a new introduction by Mr. Albee.
Customer Reviews:
A Wonderful Collection.......2004-11-12
Being a huge fan of Albee's work, the thought of having all of his plays collected in handsome hardcovers is a cause for celebration. I devoured this first collection with delight, and wait excitedly for the future volumes to be released. I did notice, however, some typographical errors that were disappointing in such an otherwise well produced edition, and I hope the people at Overlook will take better care with the future volumes. That aside, one can plainly see even with this early work that Albee was destined for immortality as a playwright.
Hail, King Edward.......2004-10-09
It finally happened (again!) No one, absolutely no writer has been for years so deserving of a complete collection. The freshness of the language in these earlier works still hits you right on the head -- where most people deserve to be hit.
Amazing Plays.......2004-05-23
For those interested in the works of people like Harold Pinter and Tennessee Williams, Edward Albee is a must. The plays in this collection are for the most part, excellent and this is a must have for any student of modern theatre.
There is much more here than just Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? The Zoo Story, The American Dream and Tiny Alice are classics in their own right. I am looking forward to future volumes!
Customer Reviews:
Whatever Happened to Edward Albee?.......2007-07-13
When you read a play like "The Man Who Had three Arms" after "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf," you can begin to see how absurd it is to rate and compare playwrights, even when one is trying to compare the plays of a single playwright. Is the man who wrote the former the same guy who wrote the latter? Where did the playwright who wrote such zesty dialog as in the banter between Martha and George, go? Where is the electricity, not to the mention the theatricality? The playwright of 1961 is same not the same guy as the playwright of 1981. If 'loss' is the theme of "Virginia Woolf," can one say that being a 'loser' is the theme of "Three Arms"? By what sad and destructive path did this talented writer take to fall from his perch as a major voice in the theater to this pathetic rant against failure and humiliation? The whine began with "A Delicate Balance," but didn't seem to gather force until the seventies when Albee began to lose confidence. It seems according to his biographer Mel Gussow that he had trouble finding backers. Although prone to protestations to the contrary, Albee has always been a big-time Broadway playwright who needed big stars to carry his shows. By the seventies, Albee was begging regional directors to do his work, while B'way producers, evidently, were unwilling to return his calls. "Lolita" was a disaster of a production, or so it was said. Peter Hall, the great British director, has said in his memoirs that Albee was growing desperate, but had few takers for his plays at that time. This volume is fascinating because it contains among his stinkers, the play responsible for his professional resurrection: "Three Tall Women." John Lahr (of the New Yorker) said in his review of that play that it had looked as if the play were headed in the same direction of his more recent work - pretentious dialog, lacking wit - when suddenly Lahr noticed the play moving in the direction of Albee's earlier work: sharp realism, driven with gusto. Lahr and others declared Albee back from his long journey to nowhere. This success was then followed by numerous other better plays, and a series of revivals. This is a must-have addition to your theatrical library.
A Collection of Brilliance.......2006-11-10
This Volume 3, which we can hope will not be the final volume, carries some of Albee's best work. Additionally, a piece or two that I don't know can be found elsewhere. Even reading his work is literally awesome. The beauty and poetry of his dialogue is sometimes practially beyong comprehending. This is an incredibly valuable volume to have on your shelf, on your night stand, somewhere you can pick it up and devour the genius of Mr. Ablee's work.
Covers His Low Period and the Recent Heights.......2006-04-14
This is the third and probably final volume in the collected plays of one of our greatest living playwrights. It includes the following:
Lolita,
The Man Who Had Three Arms,
Three Tall Women,
Finding the Sun,
Marriage Play,
Fragments,
Occupant,
The Play About the Baby,
Knock! Knock! Who's There!?,
The Goat or Who is Sylvia?
This period in his playwriting career spans the low years in his career when it seemed that he had peaked and gone past being able to produce viable work. Then came 1991 and 'Three Tall Women' a play whose central character is a dying woman who has spurned her gay son. And after that 'The Goat or Who is Sylvia?' which won a Tony award for best play of the year.
These plays are a critical part of any library of the modern American theater.

Book Description
Overlook's three-volume Collected Plays of Edward Albee finally brought together all of Albee's works for the first time. Now, as the first book is released in paperback, the first stage of Albee's great career will be brought in full to an even broader audience. The first volume of this three-volume collection contains the eight plays written by Albee during his early years as a playwright, from 1958 through 1965. Those range from the four brilliant one-act plays with which he exploded on the New York theater scene--The Zoo Story, The Death of Bessie Smith, The Sandbox, and The American Dream--to his early masterpiece, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Ben Brantley of the New York Times has described him as "one of the few genuinely great living American dramatists." This book represents one of the most exciting and bold periods in the career of one of America's most popular and imaginative playwrights.
