Good Referene.......2007-09-23
Handy guide that you can take along. Not sure if needed to be so small. You really don't find ornamental grasses in the 'wild'. Ultimately, good for readers that have an interest.
Ornamentals for the home landscape.......2007-09-16
The author writes from a very strong background gained from having planted many of the ornamentals described and photographed in this excellent book. There is much helpfull detail that greatly aids the reader in selecting plants.
Excellent Book!.......2006-03-21
I checked this book out from my local library in order to preview it before buy it on Amazon. I was not disappointed which comes as no surprise especially since I am one of the fortunate ones who, about 10 years ago, had the chance to study Ornamental Grasses at Longwood Gardens with Rich Darke. He knows his stuff. The book is well written, concise and intespersed throughout with the author's personal observations on specific genera and individual species. Excellent photography supports the text. Rich Darke is one of the best garden/horticultural writers of his time. I also highly recommend another of his books, "The American Woodland Garden" for his well written prose and the ability to articulate the beauty and nuances of each scene photographed as well as a plant's more endearing or not so endearing aspects. Stunning photography.
Handy illustrated guide to all kinds of grasses for gardener.......2004-09-28
TIMBER PRESS POCKET GUIDE TO ORNAMENTAL GRASSES by Rick Darke. Timber Press, 133 S.W. Second Ave. - Site 450, Portland, OR 97204-3527. 2004. 226 pp. $19.95 flexible hardcover, ISBN 0-88192-653-1. color photographs, glossary, index.
Over 330 bright, sharp color photographs illustrate as many different kinds of ornamental grasses. The grasses are cataloged alphabetically. But 32 categories preceding the encyclopedic catalog group the hundreds of kinds according to different characteristics. A few of these are clumping ornamental grasses, cool-season ornamental grasses, ornamental grasses for cut flowers, ornamental grasses for dry sites (and woodlands, dry shade, fragrance, etc.), and ornamental grasses for movement in breezes. Ornamental grasses are becoming increasing popular with today's gardeners because of their textures, variety, and adaptability. And because, as the numerous photographs show, they make for attractive gardens and landscapes that do not appear overly manicured. Darke is a landscape design consultant who has won awards in the field. His "Pocket Guide" is a ideal reference for anyone interested in ornamental grasses, particularly gardeners at all levels.

Simple highlights and concise "Insight" Bangkok.......2000-07-12
I would recommend this book to anyone who will spend a few days in Bangkok. It will encourage the reader to get an idea and to focus on a particular place to visit by flipping thru the vivid photos and accompanying concise text. When I went to Bangkok last year, I had only four days. I had to plan my days by the areas I wanted to visit and narrow my interests. Since I was not familiar with Thailand and its' culture, Insight Guide Bangkok, was great in helping me focus my trip. I even had a chance to take a day trip outside Bangkok (as recommended by the book) to the Northern ancient city of Ayuttaya and a day trip to a remote island South of Bangkok. My vacation to Bangkok turned out to be a memorial experience dispite the lack of time. The travel tips in the back of the book (marked in yellow pages) are lists of basic information at your finger "tips".

Very good, great buy.......2001-04-30
I wish it was available in a larger format, as the limited space does just so much justice to the vibrant colors, moods, and designs of India. But it is a fantastic introduction, and is packed with some of the best quotes you can find on the topic....
Reinterprets Traditional Indian Design for Modern Living.......1999-03-18
This is a wonderful, landmark book. Ypma successfully reinterprets traditional Indian design for modern contemporary living. The book provides knowledgeable updates on various Indian craft traditions (sectioned cleanly into distinct chapters)and traces the historical roots from which these traditions have evolved. Perfectly straddles the ancient and the contemporary without stereotyping India. The pictures are great but what really sets this book apart is the accompanying text which is nothing short of illuminating. A great introduction for those interested in Indian design as it is practiced today.

Book was received in good used condition, exactly as described by seller. Very fast shipping. Would absolutely purchase from this seller again. Thanks much!
This book stopped my puppy from peeing on the carpet!.......2000-05-21
This book is the best "How To" book I've ever read. I'm not one for instructional manuals, but when my puppy came home and decided the carpet was the best place to relieve himself time after time, I was desperate. This book taught me not only how to potty train my pup, but also how to play with him in the best way to keep him from biting and snapping later in life. The author is a dog trainer and knows what she's talking about. All of the info was easy to understand and easy to put into use in every day life. A pretend schedule is included for various situations such as introducing your puppy to other people. The book also has amusing antidotes about either the author's pets or other people's pets she has run across. The author explains what you should do as far as training and play goes and why you should do it. She has some consequenses included. This is a wonderful book for a first time puppy-lover. It is a must have! Keep it next to the dog food and newspapers!
Wonderful!.......1999-10-17
The best puppy raising book I've seen. Has a little bit(or a lot) of everything puppy related from selecting your puppy to nifty tricks and games; this book is a definate #1 resource as to dogs & puppies.

Book Description
Appealing to conservationists, travelers, orchid lovers, and naturalists alike, the author takes his readers on an incredible journey to pursue the 145 temperate American orchid species in their native habitats. This chatty account of his field trips in Canada and the U.S. is intended both to document many of our native species and to inspire others to respectfully explore the wealth of orchids. Includes 170 superb color photographs.

Detailed information concerning orchid biology, ecology, history, and conservation for nature lovers and gardeners alike.......2005-12-09
Now in paperback for the first time, Wild Orchids Across North America: A Botanical Travelogue is offers detailed information concerning orchid biology, ecology, history, and conservation for nature lovers and gardeners alike. Full-color photographs throughout reveal the beauty of these wonderful flowers, making Wild Orchids Across North America a stunning visual treasury as well as a repository of information on all things orchid. The emotion that author and North American Native Orchid Alliance founding member Philip E. Keenan has for these captivating blossoms shows through in his exquisite attention to detail. Highly recommended especially for orchid lovers.
Outstanding.......1999-02-09
I have had the rare satisfaction of experiencing a manuscript about orchids that would be the envy of any writer on any subject, and a pictoral feast that certainly would put Keenan right up there as the Ansel Adams of orchids when it comes to photography. And somewhere up there Rachel Carson must be smiling down and thinking ,"Well done Mr. Keenan", for, like Carson, Keenan has great concern for our voyage through time on our spaceship earth and, in a most disarming manner, alerts us to our ecological responsibilities without being overbearing about it.This is not just about orchids - it's about life.
Keenanýs descriptive prose is a fitting complement for his b.......1999-01-05
Memoirs and travelogues have long been a popular vehicle for sharing personal experiences on a wide variety of subjects. Most natural history tomes of this type are very general and have little specific information to generate vivid images for the reader. Not so with Philip Keenan's assemblage of more than two decades of traveling throughout most of North America in search of many of the wild orchids of that continent.
Keenan's descriptive prose is a fitting complement for his brilliant full-color images of wild orchids taken in situ from coast to coast. Having accompanied him on many of these forays I can say that each vignette or anecdote brings me back to the day of discovery! For those who have not been there, his photographs will give you a taste of what can be waiting for you.
Both the very rare and the frequent and familiar are treated with the same reverence and respect. For those who have lived in the Northeast the wide-spread pink lady's-slipper is still be to admired as much as the rapidly decreasing fairy-slipper. Keenan takes us to such diverse places as Newfoundland, Alaska (and its breathtaking Kodiak Island), the pinelands of New Jersey, and the open savannas of southeastern North Carolina. A few days in the 'sky islands' of southeastern Arizona yield several sought-after species. Although not a rabid 'life-lister' as are so many in various natural history fields, Keenan appreciates each new species and joins many of us in completing the study of all species within a genus.
This volume is both an excellent addition to the native orchidist's library or a perfect gift for anyone who appreciates nature. I can think of no other book on native orchids, or wildflowers in general, that would be as ideal as a first volume to intrigue and infect someone with an appreciation for the natural world around them. Book Description
They were temptresses of tease and specialists in seductionbawdy and beautiful burlesque performers. Expertly twirling their tassels, these sexy stage professionals took cues from their vaudeville and variety show predecessors. Remembering the time when a striptease was a theatrical act complete with humor, live music, and skits, BURLESQUE: LEGENDARY STARS OF THE STAGE captures the spirit of the genre with photographs, interviews, and histories. The book is a tribute to the performers who shimmied and shook for countless crowds while striving to maintain a high level of artistry and professionalism. Author Jane Briggeman is the founder of the Golden Days of Burlesque Historical Society, whose mission is to unite former stage performers and promote the story of their craft. Spurred by the deaths of some of burlesque's greatest names, BURLESQUE captures the heart of this unique industry.
Customer Reviews:
Briggeman's impressive BURLESQUE as history lesson.......2007-03-30
Just noticed that there are some copies around for used prices on this insanely well-done hardbound. I paid a lot more and if you're looking for some vintage burlesque history of real performers, begin here. Briggeman clearly states how and why she undertook this search; this isn't a working author, she approached it as a fan, a researcher and hit a bull's eye. And if you can scarf one up for a good price, grab it for a fascinating read.
No Virginia, this isn't neo burlesque: here are the roots of the original bump & grinders who paved the way for today's performers who now cross into new media, post-feminist stuff and are more rock stars than many rock stars: today's performers owe a major bow to the subjects in "Burlesque: Legendary Stars of the Stage" and as a labor of love, this proves that a well sought-out and researched project like this can transcend its original goal. "Burlesque" humanizes the performers behind the glitter and, sometimes, grime of a lost era. for the Bettie Page fans and Brown and Bigelow pin up fans along Elvgren's alley, a tip o' the Hatlo hat to a book well done. could it have been heavier in one way or another? Sure: any subject like this is a jump into the deep end of the pool. There's a lot more to cover, but that's not the point: finding real, breathing people and hearing their stories was and is the point. Great vintage photos make it a time trip. And like so many art forms that were reviled by upper class, burlesque, baseball, comic books and rock and roll are spawned by commonality and drew from their working-class roots to become the color in a grey society. This books rocks: what an homage and how well it is done! Kudos!!!
I'm glad to have it in my library; I envy the author in her numerous encounters with the real, working performers who, in their own stories, are now legends. True stories; real people. Bless Briggeman; bless her subjects.
Burlesque Book wins 2005 IPPY Award.......2005-05-26
I just heard this book, "BURLESQUE: Legendary Stars of the Stage," won the 2005 IPPY Award in the Performing Arts catagory. From what I've read, over 2200 books were submitted by over 1500 Independent Publishers...and this book was judged to be the best in its catagory. That's all I need to know; it tells me this is a good book--perhaps considered a collectible due to all the photos it contains. The book also preserves at least a small piece of burlesque history; written by someone who has gotten to know many of these old-time performers in their later years. It's a book worth owning!
Good, but..........2005-02-04
This book is full of wonderful memorabilia, but it's a little weird that the author doesn't mention, or never has heard of, the neo-burlesque movement that has sweeped America and parts of the World. Rhapsodizing about performances she has never seen seems to be her way of romanticizing the past. There's no denying the book has wonderful photos, and the author's collection is full of amazing items. Even if she doesn't like the current burlesque scene, it's something she should comment on. Even the NY Times has written about the current burlesque revival! Nowhere does she mention Teasorama, the NY Burlesque Fiestival, or Exotic World, though she talks about the Museum. It's a flaw in an otherwise entertaining book.
Caveat: I am very much a part of the NY scene, stage managing and helping in a variety of shows, so perhaps I'm prejudiced.
"Burlesque " by Jane Briggeman.......2004-10-14
Slipping behind the scene, author and founder of the Burlesque Historical Society, Jane Briggeman, draws the reader into the dressing rooms and personal lives of the woman and men of burlesque.
Peppered troughout the book are beautiful photographs that show lots of curves, georgious gowns and costumes that bring the art of the dance into the readers mind.
Jane Briggeman covers all the ground from men performing baggy pants comedy to the burlesque stars and big production shows.
The author writes about burlesque's high popularity as well as its low periods when threatened by repressive times. Her impressive collection of burlesque memorabilia would be a welcome addition to any writers research library. Briggeman reveals heart and soul in "Burlesque". The size of the book and the attractive high gloss red cover makes this a very classy coffee table conversation piece. Go out, buy the book and have some fun, it's a very exciting read.
"Panels" of Friends.......2004-10-11
I just might be prejudiced because I am one of the Ladies.
I must say the book is written with love for the art and the people of Burlesque.

Book Description
Rosa Praed was born in Queensland, in 1851. Rosa began writing in her teens, and in 1872 she married Campbell Praed, the younger son of a brewing family who had come to Australia to make his fortune.
In 1876 Campbell took Rosa with him to England, where she became a successful novelist, producing more than forty-five books over the next four decades, half of these set in Australia. In 1882 she published Nadine, achieving considerable celebrity which took her into London's artistic, political and literary circles. She separated from Campbell Praed in 1897 and began living with Nancy Harward, a psychic medium whom Rosa believed to have been a German slave-girl in Flavian Rome.
Rosa's life story is rich and dramatic. Her personal tragedies, an unhappy marriage, the loss of her children, are set against her search for a spiritual meaning to life, with investigations into reincarnation, the Theosophical movement, Catholicism, mediums, seances, astrology and Aboriginal beliefs.
