Traveling from north to south, as in the Villages volume, we encounter first the towns with substantial Etruscan and Romanesque features, then the walled towns of central Tuscany, followed by the coastal and thermal communities of the south. The country towns described and photographed in this book have been selected not only to exemplify the remarkable variety of this part of Italy but also because they embody its exceptional artistic and architectural heritage. There are works by Luca della Robbia and Donatello in Impruneta; Piero della Francesca was born in Sansepolcro. The architects of the Renaissance have left many masterpieces as well, often under the patronage of powerful local families: Michelozzo built the Villa Medici near Fiesole, while Giuliano da Sangallo designed the Medici fortress at Sansepolcro. Other aspects of the cultural heritage of these towns are more ancient: Volterra has the remains of Etruscan walls, and the Romans used the thermal springs at Chianciano Terme. A noted characteristic of Tuscan towns is their gastronomy. The wines of Chianti are well-paired with the beef of the Chiana Valley, while bread is justly celebrated in the area around Montecatini. Other markets feature nongastronomic delights: alabaster in Volterra, flowers in Pescia, books in Pontremoli. Twenty of the most beautiful towns of this opulent land are treated in this visual and textual feast by Alex Ramsay and James Bentley, which is completed by a guide to the principal sites, events, hotels, and restaurants of each town. 273 color illustrations.

a beautiful book. Pictures are evocative of the essence of Tuscany. Love Tuscany and this book does it justice.

Broad in scope..........2004-12-16
but mixed in quality. This book is possibly very helpful if you're new to lizards and are looking for an overview on some species, just to see what's interesting. However, although the bulk of the care is accurate, there are parts I disagree with; as another reviewer noted, they state you can put four leopard geckos in a ten gallon tank, which is unreal; I'd say maybe 2 in a ten gallon. Lots of the cage sizes they mention seem off, one way or the other, but the novice, at whom this book is aimed, won't know that, because they lack experince.
As far as general care goes, I think they got most of the diets right, as well as general temperatures, etc. but there is no real in depth guide to care; breeding info, or really good specific information is scarce. Also, it seems some of thier species are out of date, by which I mean, many formerly common but now harder to come by species (which again, the novice likely won't find) are covered, whereas many now common species aren't. I can't really reccomend this book; look at online dealers (easy to find) and pet stores to figure what lizards appeal to you, and just go ahead and do more specific research; there are books on most particular species common to the trade, as well as mailing list, etc. where you can get equally good or better info, of a greater depth.

I was expecting something a little more in depth. The Uromastyx section should really not be trusted. I reccomend joining a mailing list for your particular species.

lizard care from a to z is the most comprehensive and informative book on reptile care that i have read in a long time. a variety of species are covered in considerable depth. it also includes information on cage construction, and general rules of thumb for the care of most common (and many uncommon) species found in the pet industry. an absolute must-buy

The vast majority of info in the book was 100% accurate. However, I disagree with several cage sizes he reccomends. His savvana cgae size is somewhat larger than most people use, and his statment that you could put 4 leopard geckos in a 10 gallon seemed a bit unreal. Most leo breeders say no more than 2 in a ten gallon. Otherwise, a prefect book

I enjoyed this book due to its wide variety of infomation and all of the great illustrations and diagrams on how to acutally set up the terrarium for the lizards. I currently use several of the books ideas for my lizard collection. I give this book two thumbs up.

Great reference book for setting up terrariums and basic reptile care!.......2005-07-06
While this guide does not go indepth with each reptile and each terrarium type, it does provide all the information that you need as you look into setting up and maintaining a terrarium and selecting reptiles. The reptile information is broken down with easy to understand symbols and includes reptile characteristics, diet, behavior, times of day they are most active, level of difficulty for the reptile's care, terrarium size, type, substrate, temperature, and other habitat items that are needed to care for that reptile.
This guide is well beyond the simple quick reference guide I was looking for!

Excellent book.......2007-06-30
Great book. Has good instructions and lots of projects. I have already built a 2 trellises based on this book, and am getting ready to start on some chairs.

I just attended my 3rd course with Dawn King. If you can take a course with her it is well worth it! The book is easy to follow and the projects actually end up looking like the pictures in the book!! Dawn is a super teacher with a light hearted approach. 5 stars for her and her book.
Disappointing.......2006-08-09
This book has photos of some neat projects, however, there is one page of basic 'instructions' which is not helpful at all. There is no advice on selecting wood/branches, bending them, curing them, finishing/varnishing etc., nor is there instruction (except for screws and a very basic tenon on the aforementioned instruction page)on how to attach the pieces. The only 'directions' are simple illustrations of what order to put the pieces together in. A real disappointment.
