This is an excellent book. It does a good job of identifying shrubs and trees. It shows illustrations of: Flowers, if any, Leaves, and fruit, along with the average size of the plant. Each plant has a detailed description which helps distinguish it from similar plants.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the Outdoors, Hiking, plants, gardening, you get the idea....

4 out of 5 stars Rick Steves on Prague.......2005-09-21

We enjoy Rick Steves reviews and use them in our travels. We always supplement with another guidebook (DK, National Geographic), as sometimes he is just too damn smug and opinionated. For example, on this trip, he had two good reviews and suggestions on places to stay in small towns outside Prague (Cesky Krumlov & Trebon) and both were exactly as advertised. Some of his low reviews on restaurants do not seem to be accurate, as we have eaten at both restaurants recommended and ones to be avoided on his list, and generally think we can do a better job in finding our own food.

Positive is some of the insight he gives in the description of items in museums, the negative is the lack of good photos and maps(he admits this and says to buy a good map when you get there.

5 out of 5 stars Great, great guidebook!!.......2005-05-09

As an airline pilot for over 13 years and an USAF pilot for nearly 20 years I have circled the globe a few times over in my travels. I fly to South America, Paris or Madrid once a week for a living and I have never been so taken by a guidebook as I have been by Rick's! My wife and I just finished a 1 week trip to Prague last week and everything in the book was spot on. The sights, the eating and the lodging recommendations were all followed and greatly appreciated. Very down-to earth, no-nonsense yet filled with humor. Some reveiwers seem to troubled by some political overtones of Rick's - leave the politics at home folks! You're in somebody else's backyard. My son and his fiancee are planning a 10 day honeymoon in Europe for July - one book they will not leave home without is their Rick Steves guidebook!! Fodors, Frommers - forget them. Lonely Planet - you've got to be kidding!! Thanks Rick - customer for life.

      Book Description

Barred from his family home- stead by his mean-spirited uncle, eighteen-year-old Chris weathers a Minnesota winter in a small cabin with his grandfather. Poverty and the tempting stories of a wandering Easterner convince Chris to harvest the trees on his grandfather’s land and float the logs down the spring floodwaters of the Mississippi to the lumber mills in Saint Louis. Filled with stories of raft hands and river pilots, this fast-paced novel has all the momentum of the great Mississippi.

This interesting book centers around the construction of the original Ferris Wheel, built for the Chicago World's Fair in 1893. It shows that America is unique in its freedom and opportunity for hard-working people from many different nations. I have read this book several times and have found it to be well-written and well-illustrated. I would recommend it for all ages.

          Book Description

The Mississippi River has influenced the economy, domestic life, culture, politics, and rhythms of American daily life. The Louisiana Purchase of 1803 and the victory at the Battle of New Orleans in 1813 gave the river a central part in the evolution of the United States. Events such as the birth of jazz and technological advances such as the steamboat solidified its place in American lore. This volume details the daily lives of those living along the Mississippi and the culture that enveloped it, from the Native Americans at Cahokia, to the rise of major port cities such as New Orleans, Memphis, St. Louis, and St. Paul. Pabis's rich thematic chapters explore many aspects of daily life, including:
        • The influence of the Trans-Atlantic fur trade on the lives of Native tribes
        • How the river's transportation economy fed America's agricultural heartland
        • The effects of ethnic ties and Jim Crow laws on the river communities
        • The development of food production and cuisine
        • How present-day residents cope with life in a flood culture, including the effects of Hurricane Katrina. Mark Twain once called the Mississippi the "Body of the Nation." Readers will learn how this influential region lived and breathed from day to day, from pre-Columbian times to the present. An ideal reference source for any student of American history and culture.

                      4 out of 5 stars A must-read for serious obedience competitors!.......1998-02-25

This is a must-read for trainers who want to show their dogs in competition. While Janet focuses on obedience competition, any serious competitor will enjoy this book. Janet does an excellent (and often humorous) job of explaining how to use food in training, bypassing the usual pitfalls. This is the best that I have seen on the subject.

She also decodes for the term-impaired, jargon such as "negative reinforcement," "punishment," "conditioned reinforcer," and "classical conditioning." There were many real-life examples given that made these terms come alive.

I especially liked the chapter on the "ring-wise" dog. The illustrations were well done, too.

If you want to show your dog competitively in obedience, tracking, agility, or freestyle, you will get sound training theory from Janet Lewis!

                        Book Description

The Newberry Library in Chicago possesses one of the most distinguished collections of medieval and Renaissance manuscript books in North America. Based on two major private collections of the late nineteenth century—those of Henry Probasco and Edward E. Ayer—and scrupulously added to in this century, the holdings include late medieval bibles and breviaries, books of hours and books of homilies, and seminal texts on astronomy.

Some of the books, such as those from the libraries of Philip the Good and Anne of Brittany, are beautifully illuminated. But the collection also includes an unusual array of "typical" medieval books, chosen not for their beauty but for their paleographical, codicological, and textual interest. Such codices include an eleventh-century Carthusian monk, and numerous books of hours adapted for feminine use. Paul Saenger has painstakingly identified the text, illumination, physical structure, and provenance for each of the more than 200 books in the collection to provide an exemplary guide to literate culture in the late Middle Ages.

This catalogue, carefully researched and handsomely illustrated, will be an invaluable resource for historians, art historians, paleographers, bibliographers, and collectors.

                              Book Description

This is the first to appear of the projected volumes of commentary to accompany the texts and translations on Theophrastus of Eresus: Sources for his Life, Writings, Thought and Influence, edited by W.W. Fortenbaugh and others ("FHSG" (Philosophia Antiqua 54); Leiden, E.J. Brill, 1992). It covers the ancient secondary evidence for Theophrastus' views on physiology, zoology and botany; the transmission, reliability and doctrinal content of the reports in the text-and-translation volume are all discussed in detail, and general overviews are provided. The commentary is an indispensable accompaniment to the text-and-translation volume, and the two together will be an important resource for students of the history of the biological sciences in antiquity.

It's not cool to promote your book at another authors expense.
You be the judge. Check out the "interesting" reviews of the Ty Cohen book the previous reviewer is promoting.
But to be promoting that book here is inapropriate at best.

Everyone wants at some point in life to be independent and the master of his own destiny and if your destiny is the music industry then you're in for a big surprise. The music industry is a secluded and closed world, hard to get in and even harder to keep from getting thrown out. Many small record companies have tried and failed at hitting it of with quality products just because they didn't know many things about this world. The book in question here is a very good Bible for those who don't know all about the music industry and want to refine their tactics or learn some new ones.
