Book Description
The most comprehensive guide to the botany, history, distribution, and cultivation of all known psychoactive plants
⢠Examines 414 psychoactive plants and related substances
⢠Explores how using psychoactive plants in a culturally sanctioned context can produce important insights into the nature of reality
⢠Contains 797 color photographs and 645 black-and-white illustrations
In the traditions of every culture, plants have been highly valued for their nourishing, healing, and transformative properties. The most powerful plants--those known to transport the human mind into other dimensions of consciousness--have traditionally been regarded as sacred. In The Encyclopedia of Psychoactive Plants Christian Rätsch details the botany, history, distribution, cultivation, and preparation and dosage of more than 400 psychoactive plants. He discusses their ritual and medicinal usage, cultural artifacts made from these plants, and works of art that either represent or have been inspired by them. The author begins with 168 of the most well-known psychoactives--such as cannabis, datura, and papaver--then presents 133 lesser known substances as well as additional plants known as âlegal highs,â plants known only from mythological contexts and literature, and plant products that include substances such as ayahuasca, incense, and soma. The text is lavishly illustrated with 797 color photographs--many of which are from the authorâs extensive fieldwork around the world--showing the people, ceremonies, and art related to the ritual use of the worldâs sacred psychoactives.

A Truly Comprehensive Guide to the Topic.......2007-08-01
This encyclopedia contains much of what one would be looking for in researching the topic of psychoactive plants and their cultural relevance. The reader is provided with a wealth of biochemical, botanical, and ethnological information. The presentation, featuring large, beautiful color photos, and well-constructed diagrams, makes this book an especially attractive resource to own.

this is an amazing reference book, it covers just about any psychoactive plant you could think of and gives an excellent coverage of knowlege about each plant. i would highly recommend it, as long as your not paying the recomended 125$ price tag

Fantastic, this magnificent encyclopedia is the biggest and most detailed to date. An unbelivably necessary edition to the library of anyone interested in psychoactive plants
The Best Book Ever Made on Psychoactive Plants.......2007-01-22
This review will be short and to the point. There is no greater single book on psychoactive plants than this book. Ratsch has done an amazing job. His book is mind-bogglingly thorough and exhaustive. It beats "Pharmacotheon" (Ott), "Plants of the Gods" (Ratch, Hofmann and Schultes) or any other book I have ever seen that attempts to be a complete source of information of psychoactive plants. I have been waiting for a book like this for years. I don't think this book could possibly be out-done for decades. At best, we can only hope to see books that would be something like supplimentary information in comparison to this book.
If you want all of the information on psychoactive plants that you can possibly get in one book, this is the one and it is definately worth the admittedly huge price tag. I would not be surprised if this book will be sold for many hundreds of dollars if and when it is sold out. Let's hope it is reprinted for a long, long time.

Great Guide Book.......2006-02-21
This is a great guide book for Vegas. The author has personally visited all the hotels and attractions and is very honest in his reviews. His is an "everyman" perspective matching well with what I've found when I've visited there. He also provides updates and corrections on the website http://vegas4visitors.com , which is really helpful when this town changes on a weekly basis. I highly recommend this book for any first-time Vegas visitors and also anyone who wants to know what they missed when they were there.
Best Vegas Guidebook Ever.......2006-01-28
I love this guidebook. I've been looking at many travel guides for Vegas lately, but this one is by far my favorite. It contains a witty writing style that matches the feel of the city. The author is brutally honest about every sight, lounge, hotel, and restaurant, lending his own experiences as trial runs for vacation planners. For me, restaurants and hotels are the areas I need the most help with while traveling, and this book did a great job of breaking down the pros and cons, fronting advice, and reassuring my travel worries. This guide really helped to sort out the overwhelming choices. I highly recommend it!

Book Description
The most comprehensive guide to llama packing. Over 80 informative photos and illustrations as well as the author's entertaining and inspirational tales of the trail. Detailed information on selecting, training and caring for llamas at home and on the trail, as well as a pattern for pack bags, backcountry recipes and trip planning advice.
Customer Reviews:
first rate resource for llama packing.......2001-10-28
As enthusiastic, if aging, hikers, my husband and I have discovered llama packing as a way to continue to explore the mountains without carrying big backpacks. This book provided concise and useful information that helped us decide if the llamas we wanted to buy were good for the task, how to care for our llamas, and how to train them for packing. The information on selecting and using pack equipment was also very helpful. The resources in the appedices that include where to buy gear and how to make it yourself were also useful. But one of the best parts of the book are the author's personal stories about actual on-the-trail experiences. She clearly loves her llamas and the wilderness.
In my opinion this book is a "must buy" for hikers who are ready to let the llamas carry the load.

great book.......2004-09-22
This is a great book for gardners in the colder shorter growing regions. What I like is that there are no plants included that will not grow in my region (3) so I spent no time browsing plants that only grow further south. Nice book at a reasonable price from a knowledgeble author
My Springtime Bible!.......2003-05-10

They are easy to read, have fabulous pictures of what the plants actually look like, and have very detailed care information. I will continue to purchase her books! Confidence-building perennial book! Absolutely!.......2002-01-05
Midwest perennial gardener here! This is the easiest, most helpful gardening book I own for choosing a new perennial or figuring out what's going wrong with an older one. All the pictures are in color and show the plants in clear close-up shots and as they look when planted. The Latin names are where they should be-off to the side, and Ms. Hole recommends the best variety and explains why it's the best. She also lists the other varieties available to clear up confusion, gives thorough planting steps, includes the length of time the plant will take to mature (read "look good in your garden"), and a host of other tips. These are all beautifully written on a two-three page spread for each plant! Add chapters on planning a garden, choosing the plants, preparing soils, trying different types of perennial gardens, throw in a host of well laid-out "quick" lists, and you have a very useful guide. Handy, easy, and confidence-building for the beginner or the intermediate gardener! Recommended absolutely!
Excellent reference for the beginning Northern gardener.......2001-01-19
I have most of Lois Hole's books being from Canada myself, and her perennial and tree and shrub books were the first "real" gardening books I bought. When I jumped headfirst into perennial gardening about 5 years ago, I bought this book because of its straightforward approach. It doesn't overburden the beginner with highly technical information, but presents useful facts about a great variety of perennials. Small columns about height, colour and varieties, when and how to divide, how to grow and how to propagate each perennial are accompanied by close-up colour photographs. The latin name and/or other common names appear in smaller text at the top of each entry. Although I have now graduated to the technical, encyclopaedia type of reference books, Lois Hole's book will remain a treasured (and still often used) member of my perennial gardening library.

Customer Reviews:
Really Useful.......2000-11-02
I've had this book thrust upon me as a student over the past 7 years in middle and high school from Drama, English and Language teachers. It is a really good book- the plays vary from being abstract and bizarre to being thoughtful and introspective. If you're a student looking for a good quick play, a teacher looking for something to get your students to do, if you're just looking for some quick quirky one act plays- this is it.
Totally worth it!
the book was useful in my classess in school........1999-10-18
The book was very cool. In fact it was so kooky that I could not put it down. I was able to use it in all of my eighth grade classess. I am a language arts teacher at Turlock Junior High, and it was extremly easy to find a 'cool' play that related to what we were learning at the time. I have been using this book for about 10 years now, and I have never grown old of it. My class this year has recently used it to put on a few short plays for the rest of the school.
