Don't waste your time/ money/ brain cells.......2006-06-14

I lOVE using primary source documents to teach history. I was hoping this book would point me in the direction of good primary source docs, and the Socratic questions to ask about them, to get students thinking.

Instead of interpreting primary source docs to form their own points of view, students are exposed (via the teacher's readings) on various leftist propoganda. This book is bias, and will get students thinking with the likes of Gore Vidal, Michael Moore, Noam Chomsky... oh, and Craig Unger's "House of Bush, House of Saudi." All of these are recommended reading on the Iraq conflict, with no primary source documents... much less any recommended authors who support the war. Want to make the students really buy into socialism? Try the chapter on the Zapatistas... very positive about these murders and drug traffickers.

Why can't I just get a good list of primary source documents, without all the leftist commentary?!?

One of my favorites.......2003-05-14

Although this book is written for tiny gardens, I think the ideas are great for any garden. There are so many beautiful pictures and easy instructions for getting the same effect in your own garden. Who couldn't adapt one of these photos for a garden room in any size garden? This book has ideas for pots and patios and ponds, raised beds and sunken gardens, and even roof-top gardens. While the majority of pictures look like English gardens, they also range from Asian to Mediterranean. If you can find this book, you should definitely buy it.

I enjoyed Truly Tiny gardens. I found the pictures to be not only enchanting, but also offering a wealth of ideas. Some of the projects are involved...but the resulting efforts are worth it. All in all very helpful for gardening in a limited space.

LONG TEXT This new paperback edition of Wensinck's Concordance et Indices de la Tradition Musulmane serves a double purpose, one of a practical, the other of a more ideal nature. When the seventh and final volume of the Concordance was published in 1969 (followed in 1988 by the eighth volume which contains the Indices), both muslims and islamologists agreed that here was the completion of an enterprise of the highest importance. More than forty years of international academic team-work had resulted in a key to that highly diverse and far from homogeneous corpus that constitutes the canonic and most authoritative texts of Islamic Tradition, itself a major source for Islamic theology and law, and besides that, a goldmine of information on the history of ideas in the formative period of Islam. Under the guidance of Wensinck and his successors many thousands of pages of sometimes poorly accessible works were indexed and an enormous amount of catchwords were recorded together with their context. With the combined efforts of editors, authors, sponsors, typographers and the publisher an extraordinary book was produced, in which three generations of scholars were involved. This work has proven to be extremely useful for all those who professionally or confessionally are concerned with the Tradition literature of Islam. Much of the recent hadit studies could not have been accomplished if no such work as the Concordance had existed. Wensinck's Concordance will continue to play its role as an essential research tool for quite a time. E.J. Brill of Leiden now publishes a paperback edition of the work. The monumental hard-cover edition was far beyond the financial means of students and professors and could only be found in libraries, if at all. The new edition is more modest than the previous one both in price and in size but otherwise it is a complete and unabridged reprint of the first edition. SHORT TEXT The publication of this new paperback edition of Wensinck's Concordance will reach a far wider audience of readers than did the monumental hard-cover which was beyond the financial means of many students and professors, and could only be found in libraries. This edition will continue to play its role as an essential research tool for all those who are concerned with the Tradition literature of Islam. I am a mother and a school teacher. And, this book as well as other of the "Bailey City Monster" and "The Bailey School Kids", books are great for all ages. I have shared these books with others and given many away as gifts to friends and family. When you read these books, you can think of students that you know and children who remind you of each of the characters. I just wish that I knew where I could get a brooch like Mrs. Jeepers!
