William Carey Grimm's classic Illustrated Book of Trees--the authority in eastern North American tree identification for over 40 years--is now available in a completely updated edition, describing recently-introduced species and incorporating changes in taxonomy, nomenclature, and geographic range.
By observing the leaves, flowers, and fruits of a tree in summer or its twigs, buds, and bark in winter, readers can easily identify a species through Grimm's full-page illustrations, classification keys, and concise species descriptions. Written in straightforward, non-scientific language for beginning botanists of any age. Glossary of terms and a complete index are included.
John Kartesz is a professor of botany and the founder/director of the Biota of North America Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Customer Reviews:
the best book by far for identifying trees.......2006-08-03
The instructor I took field biology with in college highly recommended this book. He thought it was by far the best guide for identifying trees. Now, years later and having used (or attempted to use) many different field guides, I know why he was so crazy about this book. Winter or summer, if you are looking at the bark, leaf, or bud, the very clear and detailed pictures and unambiguous text will allow you to identify any tree with certainty.
The Illustrated Book of Trees: A great reference book.......2005-10-12
This is an excellent and comprehensive book with detailed descriptions of trees by their leaves, flowers, fruits, buds, and bark. The trees are described in their summer and winter aspects. It is a fine reference book not a book to be used in the field to identify trees. You should have an idea which general family of tree you are looking at to narrow the search down as the trees are arranged according to family. At the beginning of each tree description is a section listing those characteristics that are most helpful in identifying the tree. There is also a section at the end comparing the tree to those with which it is most likely to be confused. A glossary of terms is given at the back of the book and dichotomous keys to the families are given at the front. At the beginning of each family more detailed dichotomous keys are given to help the reader distinguish one member of the family from another. Leaf shapes and edges as well as types of fruits, flowers, and buds are illustrated to help the reader understand terminology used in the descriptions
Although trees of Eastern North America is the subject of the book, it is not devoted only to native trees of the area.
More than identification.......2002-05-18
I bought my 1983 edition when I was active as a park district volunteer. What sold me on this book was that it went beyond the tree's identification, and told you more about the tree itself. For example, looking up the Sycamore it says "The Sycamore is also known as the Buttonwood, Buttonball-tree, and the American Plane Tree. It is one of the most massive of all our native trees, perhaps exceeding all others in the diameter of its trunk... The wood is heavy, hard, tough and coarse-grained; being difficult to work or split. It is used for furniture - both solid and veneer, interior finish, siding, musical instruments, boxes and crates. Practically all butcher's blocks are made from the Sycamore..." and so on.
This Grimm is no fairy-tale.......2000-03-14
Very nice book! The edition I own is the 1983 printing, so I am unfamiliar with recent changes. Book has good drawings of leaves (often several), fruits, twigs, buds and leaf scars. Excellent info on summer and winter identification included in text and step-by-step outlines. The step-by-step outline starts at the front of the book and helps you identify the family in which the tree in question belongs. Then turn to the section on that tree family for help isolating which species you have on your hands. There are good text descriptions throughout to aid identification as well as information on history, growth, and commercial uses of the trees. Not a field guide for the size and weight conscious though. Keep it in your living room or SUV.

EAT SMART IN BRAZIL
Reviewed by Sharon Hudgins, author of The Other Side of Russia: A Slice of Life in Siberia and the Russian Far East
Reading "Eat Smart in Brazil" made my mouth water! I'm a big fan of the "Eat Smart" travel guides for food lovers--and I'm always delighted when another book in this series is published. This second edition of Joan Peterson's "Eat Smart in Brazil" certainly lives up to the series' theme, promising to tell you "How to Decipher the Menu, Know the Market Foods, & Embark on a Tasting Adventure." And what an adventure this is! After an explanation of the historical, geographical, and ethnic influences on Brazilian foods and a description of five different regional cuisines within that huge country, the author then satisfies your desire to eat by providing nearly two dozen recipes for Brazilian dishes from appetizers to breads to desserts.
You'll also want to carry this book with you on your next trip to Brazil, because it contains a comprehensive glossary of food terms and cooking techniques in Portuguese (the language of Brazil), translated into English, as well as an extensive Menu Guide for translating terms that you'll find on menus and cafe chalkboards throughout Brazil. One of my favorite features of the Menu Guide is the author's marginal comments on many of the dishes listed: National Favorite, Regional Classic, Spectacular, Interesting, A Feast, Not to Be Missed, Excellent, Try Them All. Just reading these menu terms makes you want to book the next flight to Rio de Janeiro! Highly recommended!
Five Stars from BrazilMax.......2004-04-21
I'd like to see more of this kind of book. Written by experts in a readable style, "Eat Smart in Brazil" provides a succinct but informative overview of the country's culinary culture. It includes historical, ethnic and regional overviews, recipes, shopping tips (both for local markets and for when back home), a culinary phrase guide, and two Portuguese-to-English glossaries - one to help when ordering in restaurants and the other to clarify definitions of food names and cooking terminology. The Eat Smart series is published independently, under the Ginkgo Press imprint. Joan and David Peterson are literally eating their way around the world with Ginkgo. Besides Brazil, they've covered Turkey, Indonesia, Mexico, Poland, Morocco, and India. Next up, Peru. Unlike the run-of-the-mill globetrotting guidebook writer, this couple knows its stuff - which, of course, would be food. (Bill Hinchberger is the editor of the BrazilMax website.)
Best Book I Took to Brazil.......2003-02-26
Just got back from the trip of a lifetime to Brazil. We visited our former exchange student and his family. We used this book to find out what we were eating (wonderful food!) at every resturant. Even though we were with native Brazilians who spoke English, they often did not know the English words for food.
We used it in Campinas, Paraty, Rio, and Santa Rita (MG). Near the end of our trip we went through the book and marked which foods were our favorites. I recommend this book to anyone taking their first trip to Brazil
What?.......2001-10-09
Brazil IS NOT made of Indian, Portuguese and African people descent. Brazil was colonized by Portuguese, African, French, Italian, German, and Duth people. Other people that were very expressive in Brazilian history were Chinese, Jewish, Arabic, Spanish..I'm sorry if I'm leaving some nations out of this equation (Brazilian people are a union of many people and cultures!!), but I've never read something SO absurd as this review.
Thanks
Delicious!.......2000-05-26
From the authors of Eat Smart in Mexico, comes this new title, an easy-to-use menu guide for travelers to Brazil. It contains useful phrases in Portuguese when ordering and a collection of recipes for chefs who want to cook Brazilian fare at home.

Book Description
Until now, the Communist movement has been studied more from the national perspective than the international. This scholarly tradition seems to be at odds with the organisatorial interconnection even subjugation of the national communist parties ("sections") to the Communist International, or Comintern (1919/1943), but it is understandable from the point of view of the historian who has only national sources at his disposal (newspapers, brochures, interviews). Nowadays, the tendency is for the international component of the Communist movement to participate in research. The archives of the Comintern are gradually being released by the Soviet Union, and an enormous number of official publications is emerging, and being made available in libraries by reprints. Here, Vilem Kahan's bibliography is an indispensable tool in listing nearly all reference works and publications by and on the Comintern, and in giving a list of aliases of speakers on Comintern meetings and an overview of all agendas of the meetings. These lists are based on research in 14 specialised Western libraries and on the knowledge of a dozen European languages. The second volume will deal with the front organisations, a third and last volume with the national sections.
Book Description
This most revealing collection to emerge from the Soviet Union since its collapse, this volume describes the documents that were submitted to the constitutional court of the Russian Federation for the trial of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, a result of Presidents Yeltsin's decision to outlaw the party. Government prosecutors drew on this unique collection to prove that the Party completely disregarded human rights and international law.

Book Description
Winner of the New York Drama Critics Award for Best Musical, 1966
"To me the most interesting aspect of the success of
Man of La Mancha is the fact that it plows squarely upstream against the prevailing current of philosophy in the theater. That current is best identified by its catch-labels--Theater of the Absurd, Black Comedy, the Theater of Cruelty--which is to say the theater of alienation, of moral anarchy and despair. To the practitioners of those philosophies
Man of La Mancha must seem hopelessly naive in its espousal of illusion as man's strongest spiritual need, the most meaningful function of his imagination. But I've no unhappiness about that. "Facts are the enemy of truth," says Cervantes-Don Quixote. And that is precisely what I felt and meant."--Dale Wasserman, from the Preface.
Customer Reviews:
Like as it really is..........2006-08-24
Maddest of all is to see things as they are and not as they should be.
This simple premise lies at the heart of every marriage proposal, politcal campaign, revolution and of course the birth of every religion.
That such a poignant essence was successfully reduced for theatrical presentation from the lengthy Cervantes work is nothing short of genius.
All too often its easy for story tellers, playwrights and movie makers to tease out the prurient drama of human suffering. It is so much more compelling when someone manages to capture that moment of inspiration when someone dares to believe and others chance to join.
First with Sancho, then fair Dulcinea, then ultimately maybe us, we gather eagerly to that spark of faith that grows in this play.
If you think about it, "Impossible Dream" could easily have been rendered maudlin in the wrong hands. It's a testiment to this play and this writer that it actually inspires.
Not my favorite.......2005-07-28
I found Man of La Mancha to be quite confussing. The plot is so crazy that it is hard to get a grasp on what is happening until halfway through the book. One you do figure it out, it is rather humerous, but not one of my favorites by any means.
This is Exactly What You Should Expect From It.......2002-09-20
Having performed a goodly segment of this script during an ill-fated production from hell, I must say that it was quite good to have a copy of the script that was what I was looking for. Man of La Mancha is most certainly NOT the original (Don Quixote), but it doesn't need to be. If you want the original book, you may as well read it in it's original, Spanish text (as I have). Have fun with the story, it's one of the more referenced, when dealing with insanity.
The Mirror of Reality is cracked!.......2002-01-22
I was introduced to Hidalgo Quixote, Knight of the Woeful Countenance in high school and was overtaken by the power of the music and the story. Two years later, I was living in Portugal. Though it wasn't Spain, I still felt the same breeze, and saw the same type of windmills that Quixote tilted in his tilted reason.
Joseph Smith once observed that, "by proving contraries, truth is made manifest," (History of the Church 6:428), and Aristotle once said that if you want to find truth, invert. Cervantes follows this pattern of putting things upside-down to show right-side-upness. He accentuates reality by taking an insane man as his lead character. The paradox, however, is that Quixote seems to be the sanest person in the story.
"The Man of La Mancha" has two advantages over its parent-text "Don Quixote." The first is that Wasserman, et al. did a marvelous job of pairing down Cervantes' two part book into a one act play. A lot of Quixote's adventures are funny parody, but it at times becomes a bit over-done. The play captures the essence of the Quixote-Idea without any gas. "Brevity is the soul of wit," as Shakespeare testified.
The second advantage is the music. "The Quest (The Impossible Dream)" is a triumph not only for Wasserman et al, but it is a triumph for humanity. So this book needs to be read with the soundtrack. The original Broadway is my favorite, since it captures the Iberian wind that blows over the story. The Peter O'Toole film is too produced and had too many sweet strings that drench out the Spanish guitars.
You know how good a work of art is by seeing how it is parodies. Quixote has been copied on "Quantum Leap," and Alf, and Jim Neighbors sung "The Quest" on Gomer Pyle. There is even a cartoon "Don Coyote and Sancho Panda." And, of course, there is the classic Mr. Magoo (Jim Baccus) version of Don Quixote.
So buy, and enjoy this play. Read along with the movie, and ponder reality through the eyes of an insane man.
a wonderfull story.......2001-07-13
Man of La Mancha remains my alltime favorite musical. Others such as Les Miserables and Phantom of the Opera are perhaps better in many ways, but nevertheless, Man of La Mancha holds a very dear place in my heart. It is a powerfull tale of a man who, disalusioned with everyday life, decides to become a Knight Errant and sally forth into the world righting all wrongs. Its overall themes of good over evil, and the search for happyness are an inspiration. Don Quixote may be a bit out of his time, but is he really so insane? Perhaps its the rest of the world that could do with some of his peculuar brand of boldness.
Book Description
Man of La Mancha is arguably the most popular musical drama of all time, most recently on Broadway starring Brian Stokes Mitchell. Dale Wasserman, however, had more trouble getting it on to a Broadway stage than Don Quixote ever had with those damn windmills. For centuries, writers all over the world had tried to stage Cervantes' comic masterpiece, and all had failed. On a sabbatical to Spain in the late 1950s, screenwriter-stage director Dale Wasserman had the insight to change that - Don Quixote the novel was too rambling to be dramatized, but the almost equally incredible story of the novel's creator wasn't. Wasserman wrote, first, a tv drama of Man of La Mancha (Cervantes is the Man, not Quixote, by the way), which David Susskind produced as "I, Don Quixote." What happened next, and for the next several decades, to this remarkable drama is an incredible drama in its own right. Many writers tried to get Wasserman to contribute to an "official" account of the making of Man of La Mancha, but Wasserman knew he was the only writer who both knew all the facts, all the facets, and would eventually get around to writing the story as it should be written, as both a "making of" and a "commentary on the state of" story. From the Costa Del Sol to Hollywood, Broadway and beyond, with a host of spectacular people, including Ava Gardner, Colleen Dewhurst (whom Wasserman discovered for La Mancha) and John Huston, this is the full story of Man of La Mancha, before Broadway and beyond. Included is the full script of the original TV version, "I, Don Quixote."
Customer Reviews:
A fascinating story told by a highly outspoken author.......2005-04-28
This book is the story of how the now-classic Broadway musical "Man of La Mancha" came to be written, and of its various productions, including the much-maligned 1972 film version. Its 87 year old author, Dale Wasserman, not only wrote the script of the musical as well as the film's screenplay, but also wrote its source, the 1959 non-musical TV play, "I, Don Quixote", which was broadcast during the Golden Age of live TV drama and, as of now, still has never been repeated on television nor issued on video. It would make fascinating viewing--if a copy can be found on kinescope and restored.(Those curious about the play can actually read it; the entire text is included in this book, and despite a few changes, it strongly resembles its musical counterpart, right down to the dialogue.)
Wasserman is a highly opinionated, outspoken and entertaining writer who spares nothing and nobody, and he takes us through the various phases in the writing of the show. He is pointedly emphatic in declaring that it was never intended as a dramatic adaptation of "Don Quixote" ; he believes strongly that an attempt at adapting the episodic 1,000 page novel into a coherent and interesting play, much less a film, is as impossible as Don Quixote's own attempt to defeat that famous windmill. He was/is not interested in the actual novel as a potential play. Wasserman intended both "I, Don Quixote" and "Man of La Mancha" as a tribute to Miguel de Cervantes, author of the novel, and to demonstrate how, in all spiritual ways, Cervantes and his fictional creation were close kin. Perhaps critics who review "Man of La Mancha" should take closer notice of this.
One fascinating aspect of the book is that though he is critical of the 1972 film version of "Man of La Mancha" starring Peter O'Toole and Sophia Loren, both non-singing actors, he is by no means as hostile to it as those critics that howled that a great musical had been desecrated on its way to the screen. He compliments its stars on their performances, and his biggest beef with the production seems to lie in the necessity of the film's having to use realistic, literal scenery, something that the stage version deliberately avoided.
Where Wasserman may alienate some people, however, is in his very politically incorrect and scathing criticism of some of the countries that produced the foreign language productions. But one can hardly blame him; if his account is as accurate as it seems, the liberties some of them took are horrifying.
But to divulge any more of this book would be unfair. Theatre buffs should eagerly lap it up, and anyone else interested in knowing how a literate Broadway musical play was put together should enjoy it highly.
Relishing the "Unreachable Star".......2004-02-14
This riveting romp of a read is as deep as the reader is prepared to probe--a rollicking airport diversion, or an insightful examination of man's condition.
For those who crave celebrities in unusal positions--naked Kirk Douglas raging at the staff of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (the stage version)for example, this will delight. For those who hunger for universal timeless truths, this will be a feast.
For theater aficionados as well as for history buffs this is a must read.
"Impossible" but True.......2003-12-25
I saw "Man of La Mancha" in, probably, its second night of previews in New York. I had cajoled a group of friends into coming based on my fandom for its star, Richard Kiley. I was a bit worried that they, or indeed I, might not like the show. What was a big musical like this doing opening in a rickety, "temporary" theater W-A-A-y off-broadway? I couldn't get any reading on my friends' reactions during the show (which was performed without intermission) but, as the lights came up at the end, I saw that I had done good. There wasn't a dry eye along the row we had commandeered. We stood by our seats and raved as the audience filed out. It turned out to be a damn good thing that we did, too, as we were just one row in front of Kiley's wife! All of which is to say that I pride myself on having loved the show longer than most. Thus, I was thrilled to hear that this book was coming out. Then I got worried. What if it didn't live up to its subject? What if it told me things I didn't want to know? Sure, Dale Wasserman is a superior playwright/screenwriter, but that's not a BOOK (and if you think writing is writing, try some of David Mamet's novels... not his essays, which are brilliant, his novels). Anyway, I needn't have worried. This is the book "...La Mancha" deserves, and the one any lover of the play or the theater will cherish.

Customer Reviews:
Don Quijote De La Mancha by Cervantes.......2003-07-18
El libro es grande. Don Quijote is a wonderful story replete
with adventure and countryside humor. In the Spanish version,
there are a number of difficult idiomatic phrases to figure out.
Naturally, the english version is more readable. Both versions
are well-written in their respective languages. This book
is or should be required reading for most high school students
prior to graduation. It is required reading in Spanish
literature classes.
