5 out of 5 stars A GREAT Key to Wild Plant Identification.......2001-12-16

I highly recommend this book, no get two because if you are like me-dragging one into the field-you are going to need a second copy for your reference shelf. With 1300 references to flowering plant life of Eastern North Amercia this author leaves almost nothing to doubt. This book has made all the difference to me in identifying native plants. That's because the author gives clear identifing features and details in his short descriptions, including bloom time, habitat, range and distinguishing plant characteristics. I found the book very easy to navigate because of the illustrations. It is well organized by GENERA and thumbing through the book will help you navigate to the correct species and type of plant. I can't recommend this book highly enough, especially for the advanced plantsman!!! You do need to have familarity with the difference between a daisy and a trillium, botanically speaking, to put this reference to work for you.
This is an outstanding guide to plant identification, not a gardening book. However you can use the habitat information and the bloom time for use in planning.
I am a member of the Georgia Native Plant society. I go out to rescue native plants from development sites and reestablish them in my home garden. I am very pleased with being to rapidly identify anything I come across thanks to this excellent reference.

4 out of 5 stars Very good book, with limitations.......2000-07-31

This volume is similar to the authors earlier work, "The Illustrated Book of Trees," which was (and is) a valuable resource for many people (including me). The books even look the same, in terms of binding, fonts, and form of illustrations. A large number of flowering plants and shrubs are presented with a short description of each one together with a black and white drawing of the critical features needed for identification (there are no color illustrations in this book). This is not a professional field guide, and there is no provision for "keying out" a specimen for positive identification. As far as I could tell, there is no attempt to provide a systematic approach to identify a specimen. As with the popular field guides for birds, species are listed in groups that share superficial properties that make them seem similar to a person encountering them in the field. Furthermore, the brief descriptions and illustrations are very good, and interesting. Additional positve features include a glossary and several other ancillary tables of information. The index is not exhaustive, but has almost everything I looked for. I only had access to this book for about one hour, but I can see spending lots of time with it and I am about to make the purchase. If you spend much time in the out of doors, and wonder about the identity of plants you encounter, this book belongs on your shelf (its a little heavy for the backpack).

4 out of 5 stars Frommer's Belgium Helper.......2007-06-12

Very well writen guide! This little book is packed with information and maps which proved very helpful on my recent trip to Brussels and Bruges.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent general guide.......2007-06-03

This was a quite good guide to Brussels, with clear, reliable reference to major sights, and good, though limited, specifics, such as description of individual buildings and features at the Grand Place. It pointed me effectively to three beautiful churches (Notre Dame de Sablon, Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula, Eglise St Nicolas), but had little detail about them (nor did the churches supply the same). A specialized art/architecture guide would have been desirable for a more in-depth look at the artistic features and history of such a rich and old European center. But no specialized guide would have been as useful as this guide in advice re restaurants, shops (I was directed to a great chocolate store!) and other practicalities. To travel light, with a single guidebook, this is an excellent choice. (However, the maps are very basic; you will also need a detailed street map. An excellent free map was available at both hotels I stayed at.)

        Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars A disorganized and confusing textbook.......2007-10-17

At 64, I decided to learn French. I have a collection of CD French courses, and beginnng French textbooks. Finally, I enrolled for a class at our local university. Unfortunately Motifs is the textbook we are using, but fortunately I have an excellent instructor. The authors of this text should have given up rather than try to update it to a 4th edition.

The book is divided into modules. Each module has several themes (too many with useless and dated topics). The end of each module has the structure for each theme. You wear out the book by constantly flipping back and forth between a theme and the structure section. The structure informaion is minimal. What is written is often confusing. The exercises are sometimes vague and can have multiple correct answers. The book is slow to introduce useful conversational verbs. It is frustrating to try to speak when the only verb you know is the etre form. Module 4 finally gets around to introducing some useful verbs. The online Quia workbook is even more confusing. Often I resort to using one of my other textbooks to try to understand what Motifs is trying to present.

If you are looking for a beginning French textbook, do your students a favor, and skip this one.

        5 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-09-27

Just whay I needed for way lower than the price offered at my schools bookstore.

3 out of 5 stars Organizational Problem .......2007-06-26

The attempt to categorize verbs according to themes is commendable but there should be exceptions among irregular verbs like avoir, etre and aller. These verbs are too important to postpone conjugations in later chapters. Also, it seems that the previous edition was more sufficient than this edition as there were some mistakes in the answer key.

3 out of 5 stars A feeble attempt to improve on Deux Mondes.......2005-02-10

As a textbook, Motifs is not so bad. If you liked the style of Deux Mondes, but got really frustrated with all of the anglicisms, grammatical errors, and misleading or outdated pictures, Motifs might be a decent alternative. Beware, however, of the QUIA program that accompanies Motifs!!! The QUIA program is based on the Motifs workbook and from the first exercise it will lead you and your students into a quagmire of frustration through misleading model sentences and errors. I've used Motifs for two semesters and am in search of a textbook with a better package.

        4 out of 5 stars Start Here.......2001-03-01

This is a good book to get if you wish to learn French. Great list of vocabulary at the end of every chapter, the problem exercises are relevant and useful, and the tape that accompanies this book helps you understand the material better. The organisation of it all could stand some improvement, but overall it is a useful and well-constructed language book.

            Product Description

MOTIFS is a complete program for first year French with a communicative, thematically based approach. Each of its sixteen modules thoroughly integrates vocabulary, grammar, and cultural insights with that module's theme. The themes highlight student life and personal experiences. The activities provided allow students to focus on meaningful communication while practicing key structures closely tied to the contexts where they naturally occur in French. Specific suggestions for approaching each module component are presented. In addition, extensive marginal annotations can be found throughout the text, providing suggestions for presenting new material and for supplementing activities. These also contain additional cultural information and answers to activities, as well as extensive examples of teacher talk in French. Appendix B has answers to the Structure Exercises.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive guide for Southern naturalists...........2006-08-24

As a birder who has worked tirelessly to create the ultimate backyard habitat, and a former birding editor of a regional gardening magazine, I can vouch for the unbelievable plethora of information contained in this treatise. Not only are landscape designs provided in detail for various types of gardens, from the formal to the wild, they are done with inclusions of complete lists of annuals, perennials, shrubs, and trees for nectar, fruit, seed, and insect eaters. these lists are exhaustive, and cover every aspect of the garden.

After the chapter on landscaping, nearly seventy of the various bird species that can be attracted to the Southern garden are each described, and most often photographed with complete detail. These descriptions of each species are thorough, along with a list of their habitats, a brief outline of behaviors, and their favorite food plants.

Following is an exhaustive chapter which covers all of the most important plants, both native and non-native, which are attractive to birds in the South. Each is cross-referenced to include a list of the birds that feed on them. There is a nice description for each plant which delineates not only its phylogenetic classification, but also its optimum growing conditions, the hardiness zones it does well in, it's fruiting or flowering time, the size it can obtain, whether it is deciduous or evergreen and much more.

The fourth chapter deals with accessories: Feeders, water gardens, misters and drippers, houses (including dimensions and correct entrance hole diameters and cavity depth for each cavity nesting species), seed preferences, and more!

The final chapter dispels some of the common myths about birds that have prevailed over the years, providing insights that will give even the most novice backyard birder a leg up on creating and maintaining an exciting backyard! Topics such as "what to do with 'abandoned' baby birds found in the yard" and "parents abandoning their offspring" are covered very well. In all, ten of the most common myths are analyzed.

Throughout the book, beautiful paintings of our favorite southern birds by several artists grace the pages. This book is definitely a must have for the libraries of all gardeners and birders!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful resource for the family.......2006-06-17

This is a terrific book for southern bird lovers. Besides being packed with valuable information, the photographs of the described plants, trees, etc. are so beautiful and helpful. Because of all those "pretty pictures", kids really like this one too. My kids liked telling me what to plant. We made a game of trying to plant what would attract the most birds (and also look pretty).

                                    Book Description

As well as being the author of the greatest of all children's plays, Peter Pan, J. M. Barrie also wrote sophisticated social comedy and political satire. The Admirable Crichton and What Every Woman Knows are shrewd and entertaining contributions to the politics of class and gender, while Mary Rose is one of the best ghost stories written for the stage.

For some 20 years at the beginning of the century J M Barrie enjoyed enormous commercial success with a wide variety of plays, but he is best known for Peter Pan. It retains its popularity today, both in the original and in adaptations. As well as being the author of the greatest of all children's plays Barrie also wrote sophisticated social comedy and political satire, much of it now newly topical. The Admirable Crichton and What Every Woman Knows are shrewd and entertaining contributions to the politics of class and gender, while Mary Rose is one of the best ghost stories written for the stage. Under the General Editorship of Michael Cordner, of the University of York, the texts of the plays have been newly edited and are supplemented with a scholarly introduction and detailed annotation.

4 out of 5 stars The Novel Was Better - A Review by Tinkerbell II.......2006-11-11

I admit it is odd that, after being a fanatical Pan Fan for three years, I just recently read a copy of the play (back in March), which is essentially where it all began. I was surprised at how different it was from the novel "Peter Pan and Wendy". There are several instances in the play that are not in the novel (for instance, the children try to catch a mermaid), and also some things that have been added exclusively to the novel (like how Wendy issues examinations on home-life). There were introductions to each act describing the setting, which is helpful in envisioning the Darling's adventures.
I was sorry to find that the play lacked the emotion of the book, although this was most likely because I was not actually watching actors perform it. Dialogue and stage directions can be pretty dull, even with the wonderful narration provided by Barrie.
Even though it was lacking in emotion, most of the characters are more well-developed in the play. Peter and the Darlings are more realistic in this edition, probably because they have more dialogue. I even liked Tink better in the play than in the book. However, I was disappointed at what small parts the Lost Boys had. Even when they did make appearances, their dialogue was not as funny as it was in the book. The same goes for Mr. Smee.
It was also strange to read such a different ending. Slightly the Lost Boy does not even get Mrs. Darling for his mother! This particular edition also includes the short play "An Afterthought", where Peter returns when Wendy is grown. I surprised to hear that Wendy had married a lost boy, although they do not say which one she marries.
All in all, I preferred the novel over the play. It was far more descriptive and touching. But I still recommend the play as a necessary alternative addition to any Peter Pan library.
(By the way, the other plays in this book are excellent, too.)

P.S. Check out the other Peter Pan-related reviews by Tinkerbell III!

This book is a MUST for anyone who likes Peter Pan. It contains the entire text of the 1904 version of the stage play "Peter Pan," which is the basic text used by the Broadway-musical version of the play. That's how it all began! This book also contains a long section of footnotes & historical background, invaluable for any Peter Pan fan. (James M. Barrie's novel about Peter Pan was written 7 years after the play & does NOT contain much of the dialog of the play.)

                                    Book Description

What is the meaning of Peter Pan -- not for J. M. Barrie, but for the thousands who have continued to purchase for children version after version of the story and who have faithfully attended the productions of the play? What does Peter Pan have to say about our conception of childhood, about how we understand the child's and our own relationship to language, sexuality, and death? What can Peter Pan tell us about the theatrical, literary, and educational institutions of which it is a part?

These are some of the questions this book attempts to answer. Shifting attention away from J. M. Barrie, the originator of Peter Pan, it asks instead what is the nature of our own desire or investment in this phenomenon of our culture. In the course of her investigation, Jacqueline Rose identifies behind Peter Pan a fantasy of childhood which she traces back through the history of children's fiction, forward to modern critical commentaries on children's writing, and into some of the most contemporary writers of books for children today.

Originally published in 1984, The Case of Peter Pan is now widely available in the United States for the first time. Peter Pan, Rose contends, forces us to question what it is we are doing in the endless production and dissemination of children's fiction. In a new introductory essay written especially for this edition, Rose considers some of Peter Pan's new guises and their implications. From Spielberg's Hook, to the lesbian production of the play at the London Drill Hall in 1991, to debates in the English House of Lords, to a newly claimed status as the icon of a transvestite culture, Peter Pan continues to demonstrate its bizarre renewability as a cultural fetishof our times.

This book is a very well-written and brilliantly argued engagement with an important and under-theorized topic. If you like literary theoretical work that challenges assumptions about childhood, desire, culture, and reading, you should check the book out. On the other hand, if you aren't into psychoanalytic work, this book will not be your cup of tea. In the book Rose discusses the way in which Peter Pan has become a cultural phenomenon unto itself, and argues that the obsession with innocence and eternal childhood reveals not something about children necessarily, but rather something about the investment adults have in childhood. Rose wants to interrogate children's fiction as a phenomenon produced by adults. She is very concerned about the specter of child abuse, and this book is her contribution to understanding this phenomenon and its proliferation better. This may be a difficult set of ideas for many to understand, since her argument flies in the face of deeply-cherished assumptions about childhood (many of which indeed play a part in the deep problems our culture has in ethical relations to children). But it is precisely this phenomenon of emotional and peremptory devotion to the idea of innocence that Rose argues gets in the way of a useful understanding of how child sexual abuse operates. This book also delves into the history of Peter Pan and children's fiction in general, which is fascinating.

Jacqueline Rose has done some serious scholarship in literary criticism, but this work is dubious, at best. I'm not sure why she misses the mark so poorly in this extended essay on the link between children's fiction and the publishing industry. But the work is very un-focused and rather trite. The approach is a bit dated, and I can imagine that perhaps the book is more an extended discourse on the theoretical apparatus that she seems to be enamored with rather than a solid interpretation of Peter Pan. The book is really an odd one, and it left me feeling so disgusted that I did not wish to finish the tome. Although, the other reviewers are a bit too vituperative in their critique, this book really strikes me as somewhat immature.

Rose's analysis is dubious. She attempts to make the claim that Barrie created a new genre of fantasy with the publication of Peter Pan. The problem is that Barrie's books about Peter Pan are actually components of a genre well-studied and documented for hundreds of years. Even a cursory read of scholarship in folklore would have clearly demonstrated to Rose that Peter Pan is a Marchen, a genre of folklore in which a poor, obscure hero is called to complete acts of bravery in a land of fantasy and magic. There are numerous other problems with her analysis. Even reading this study as an essay on contemporary social issues is a confusing exercise, at best, because Rose's style tends to obfuscate rather than to provide any semblance of clarity. Sorry to be so critical of literary criticism, but incoherence and bad writing simply do not belong in scholarly discourse.

I am a high school student and I am not ashamed to say that i have an affinity for children's literature, particularly english, such as Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter (all of them), and especially PETER PAN. This literature contains a magic that this author proceeds to bash at every chance she gets. I mean, are children supposed to read about oil spills and war? Preserve the magic of childhood people!

                                    1 out of 5 stars Agreed -- Don't Read It.......1999-01-26

The book is absurd. Rose reifies "culture," assuming that it is a property of "children" or "adults." As a result, she fails to recognize that the process of enculturation is actually a sharing of cultural resources rather than a colonialist imposition of cultural hegemony. Furthermore in using Freudian psychoanalysis, she undermines her counterhegemonic cultural critique, as Freud, himself, maintained a view that "the child" is less than the civilized adult. As a result of these two fatal errors, her analysis is bogus.
