Book Description

In a situation where survival is at stake, plants can provide crucial food and medicine. Their safe usage requires absolutely positive identification, knowing how to prepare them for eating, and a solid awareness of any dangerous properties they might have. Familiarity with the botanical structures of plants and information on where they grow will make them easier to locate and identify.
THE ILLUSTRATED GUIDE TO WILD EDIBLE PLANTS describes the physical characteristics, habitat and distribution, and edible parts of wild plants. With color photography throughout, this guide facilitates the identification of these plants.
Originally intended for Army use, this book serves as a survival aid for civilians as well. Anyone interested in the outdoors, botany, or even in unusual sources of nutrition will find this an indispensable resource.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A practical and useful book.......2007-05-14

The book is small and easy to pack. Each plant has a color photo, and in most cases there is a listing of the region(s) in which the plant is found. There is a separate section for poisonous plants.

4 out of 5 stars A lot of info on a few plants.......2007-01-05

This is an excellent book on the few plants that it covers. Not only does it tell you what parts are edible, but also what other uses the plant has.

5 out of 5 stars Good value for the money.......2000-05-29

If one is on the verge of taking a trip to Poland and other countries in easter Europe to see what is left of the Jewish communities, there is no better preparation than this book. Not only does it provide an overview of what remains in all these eastern European countries, it also gives detailed information of where to look and what to see in each city. While it is an excellent tourist guide, it also provides history. There is also a section setting out where to get more information about each village (and there were so many of them!). This is Ruth Gruber's second book on the subject. It is more comprehensive than the first and is certainly worth the money. If you are planning a heritage trip to find your ancestors, don't leave home without it. I found it invaluable.

      Book Description

This definitive guide to the treasures of Jewish Europe is, in the words of Elie Wiesel, "superbly written and illustrated [and] packed with dramatic tales and picturesque details." Edited by a 16-member team of esteemed journalists and historians, this unique guide invites readers to discover a Europe off the beaten tourist-track. In addition to important historic sites such as the ghetto of Venice, the old Jewish quarter of Prague, and the Anne Frank house, the authors explore the hidden gems of Jewish culture typically absent from other travel guides, from synagogues in Provence to cobbled village lanes in Romania, from a Sephardic museum in Toledo to a Jewish bakery in Budapest. Plentiful anecdotes and historical essays paint a rich narrative of Jewish life and culture from antiquity to the present day, making for fascinating reading on the road or at home. Practical, thorough, and packed with photographs and a wealth of information in a compact trim size, this comprehensive guide is every traveler's passport to discovering Europe's estimable Jewish heritage.

Published with the assistance of The Jacques and Jacqueline Levy-Willard Foundation, dedicated to the advancement of the artistic and cultural Jewish heritage.

          Book Description

In this second issue of Emigre presented in our new book format we return to some topics that are close to our hearts.

We look at the phenomenon of Helvetica, and the fact that this nearly 50 year-old sans serif is currently one of the three best selling fonts at many of the world's largest font distributors. But, as ten different designers tell us, not everybody is using it for the same reasons. Featuring interviews with Experimental Jetset, Michael Bierut, Ian Anderson, Michael Cina and others.

We are reprinting the article "Legible?" which was published in Emigre No. 23 and written by the well-known Dutch type designer Gerard Unger. This is the first reprint from a previous issue ever. Rudy VanderLans explains why. Elliott Earls, who is not your garden-variety type designer and has some very specific ideas about how to draw type, gives us his unique outlook on what matters most when designing a typeface.

We interviewed Rob Giampietro, who has coined the term "Default Systems Design" to describe a particular type of design that is rapidly spreading and is begging to be put under a microscope.

Meanwhile Cranbrook design graduate Joshua Ray Stephens suggests that design styles are not where the action is.

Also, we are featuring four short essays written in reply to our previous issue: Mike Kippenhan addresses graphic design's aversion to criticism and suggests we look at "American Idol" as a model to kick-start the comatose state of design inquiry; Patrick Fox tells us how pro bono work can keep an out-of-work graphic designer from committing desperate acts; Anthony Inciong ponders the responsibilities of graphic design education in an age defined by style and technology; and, finally, Armin Vit fires off a short essay in reply to the challenge put forth by the "old cranks" in "Rant." He may not be speaking for an entire generation of young and upcoming graphic designers, but we have a suspicion many of his contemporaries will agree with what he has to say.

                                  Book Description

This study provides an analysis of the social and political meanings in the protest vernacular poetry of Ahmad Fu'ad Nigm (b. 1929), the contemporary Eqyptian socialist poet. Nigm's work portrays Eqypt as a society composed of contending social forces and it is concerned with the cause of liberating Egypt from class inequality and political oppression. For Nigm, the way to achieve such liberation is through a people's revolution that will ultimately pave the way for a new socialist society. Nigm's commitment to the causes of his society is enhanced by his use of the simple, yet evocative, colloquial, an idiom which is close to the mind and heart of Egypt's poor and illiterate people. Moreover, Nigm deftly utilises different folk poetic forms, folk idioms and pungent witticisms to convey his socialist message. Consequently, Nigm's poetry enjoys wide popularity in Egypt, especially when sung to the melodious tune of the 'ud by Shaykh Imam, Nigm's partner. Being an example of genuine popular expression, Nigm's protest appears to pose a challenge to the political establishment, which considers Nigm as a provocateur, as well as to the majority of scholars to whom vernacular works have no place in their canonical definition of "high" literature.

Our staff continues to use this book. Jim Volz makes things simple and clear, and he saves us boatloads of time trying to figure out how to do things ourselves from scratch. HOW TO RUN A THEATER is also a great training tool for new staff. We are using various chapters as preparatory reading for our strategic planning meetings. I am proposing that our management classes use this text. I am so happy Jim wrote this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Theatre Management Book.......2006-03-31

This book is amazing. I have been teaching graduate level theatre management courses for 18 years. I have also managed several professional theatres. I discovered this book at the beginning of this year; too late to require it for my students...but I have used much of the information and insights in this book for class lectures. Next year, it will be required reading for my students. Volz covers every major area of theatre management in a fun, succinct and educational manner. I love it!

3 out of 5 stars Good book for some, not for me building a theater from scratch........2006-03-08

This book tells how to do a traditional board of directors type theater. I am making a more rudimentary theater and needed to know how to create a board that would protect my investment in a building, help me with guidance, some fund raising, some outreach, but not saddle me with its own philosophical pronouncements that might hurt ticket sales in favor of their whim.
I actually, skimmed through every page, searching for the practical knowledge I needed. This book has no nuts and bolts about theaters. It could be about many kinds of non-profit enterprises. Not a word about anything hands-on and maybe I was mistaken to expect that, except the title is "How to Run a Theater" so maybe I did have reason to think it would describe scheduling rehearsals alongside scheduling set building, or how to research building codes, how to build a stage from scratch, what to look for in a building, what certified professionals I would have to hire, or profit vs non-profit theatering.
And the mild humor and Dear Abby suggestions lightened it but got repetitive. I presume most people don't read the whole book but at least 4 times he tells me to be on time and be respectful of other people. Well, who can argue?

This book was great for my theatre and I gave one to each of
my Board Members to help them with their fund raising and theatre support! This guy obviously understands theatre and
                                  his writing style is hilarious.
