Normandy and Brittany . . . more choices than guide.......2007-09-06

Written from a British point of view, this book is full of details, side trips, decent maps and estimated travel times. What it lacks is consistancy (some areas are rated highly for scenery, history, or food while other areas don't even refer to those categories, substituting child friendly or historic). While one person's trash is another's treasure, this guide avoids any real distinction between "absolutely must see" and "nice if you have spare time" in its itineraries . . . little help to those who have only a few days to travel.

Most books catalog patterns either by motif or historical period. This handbook takes a different approach by revealing the structural anatomy of patterns, showing how they are generated and how their parts interrelate. It demonstrates how designers and artists, whether students or professionals, can play limitless variations upon a few fundamental patterns and structural arrangements.

The book explores these configurations step by step, starting with simple symmetries of mirror reflections, rotations, translations, and glide-reflections, building to point groups and the seven distinct band or linear arrays, and culminating in the seventeen full-fledged wallpaper patterns. A concluding chapter presents a visual synopsis of the basic patterns.

The author, whose own designs are included here, is a registered architect, practicing artist, and author of Patterns in Nature.

A beautiful book on a deep subject.......2004-04-03

The Handbook of Regular Patterns is 390 pages (plus biblio & index) of lovely black and white images. What ties them together is that they can be repeated to "tile the plane" i.e. to fill an indefinitely large page.

They are broken down into 17 kinds of tilings known as symmetry groups or wallpaper groups, each with its own sort of beauty (the Dutch artist M.C. Escher was well versed in the symmetry groups and used them extensively in his art). As a special bonus, the book also presents the 7 linear groups and a few point groups.

After studying the book for a while I was inspired to design and construct my own regular 2D pattern, a fish shaped tile based on the "p2" symmetry group. I cut about 20 tiles out of stoneware clay and fired and glazed them (over 10 years ago), but I still haven't installed them yet.

I have also used ideas from the book to help design quilting patterns and to make patterns for tile floors (all square tiles, but patterns in groups of tiles). I think the book is a useful item in a designer's toolbox.

An interesting topic not covered in the book (because it's not a true tesselation since it has no repeats) is the penrose tiling. Google for penrose tiling to see beautiful patterns based on pentagonal symmetry.

Excellent resource for pattern construction.......1998-11-04

Anyone interested in constructing repeating patterns, the history of design and ornament, quilting, M.C.Escher, geometry, tesselations, or mathematical concepts in the regular division of the plane, will find this hefty book an excellent resource. The historical examples are drawn from an astonishing variety of cultures, and following the exercises at the end of each chapter will give the reader a very thorough grounding in the subject.

Great guide for first time dog owners........2000-10-19

This book successfully guided my husband and I, first time dog owners, through all stages of adding a dog to our family. It offers advice on how to solve every problem we faced, and solved them conclusively. We found it indispensable. Although we had up to 7 dog training books that we had bought or taken out from the library, this was the one we always found the most helpful.

This book is the best book on dog training I've seen sofar. The directions are clear, with very good pictures. The method is very dog and owner friendly. The introduction is very good, the explanations and the tips are very helpful. This is a great book, and I have recommended it to a couple of friends.

The layout of this book is not only difficult to follow but provides little information that cannot be aquired elswhere and for less money. I would highly reccommend you look to another source for training information.

This book is far easier to understand than many other training books I have seen. It really simplifies the whole training process with it's easy to understand descriptions and wonderful illustrations.

This is truly a one-stop comprehensive guide to organic gardening: it is a big book filled with techniques, definitions, solutions to gardening problems, and a huge listing of organic gardening resources. It's one of the most thorough guides I have seen for organic gardeners--it is well indexed and annotated, and covers all climate zones and growing conditions. If this book doesn't get your motor running about the garden, well, maybe you'll want to try a different hobby. I think it should be a part of any true gardener's library, covered with notes, muddy fingerprints, and with the well-worn pages.

The Organic Gardener's Home Reference is a chart book, plant by plant, in alphabetical order, for vegetables, fruits and nuts, and herbs. The final two sections offer charts for controlling diseases and pests and suggestions for companion plants.

Each chart includes growth conditions, from when and how to plant to what to expect from the mature plant. Following this at-a-glance information is harvest advice, storage requirements and growing tips. Pests, diseases, companion plants and incompatible plants are also listed and the opposing page offers selected varieties (not localized enough to be really useful), special notes, and space for the gardener's notes. A useful quick-reference guide with concise, sometimes unusual advice. For example, the tomato entry suggests solarizing the soil during the growing season to control disease.

I have found this book to be loaded with helpful information. Some basic info, which we can forget, to detailed info to help with particular problems is wonderful. The best thing is, if the book gives you options to fix a problem, it tells you why it works and whether the method is a certain or uncertain fix. It covers everything from planting by variety to pests vs beneficial insests, fungus, soil, and a large index/appendices to lead you elsewhere if needed. It covers companions/ally planting quite well. The only thing I have noted which appears not to be covered is crop rotation. Great Reference book.

If you are traveling to Patagonia take this guide!.......2007-02-27

I have just returned from traveling five weeks through Patagonia and found myself using "Time Out" regularly for its engaging history, cultural and overall coverage.

I started out in the Argentinean Lake District (Bariloche) and wove my way down to Tierra del Fuego (Ushuaia), crossing various times between Argentina and Chile. "Time Out" was my companion guide to both "Footprint" and "Rough Guides".

No other guide gives you as much information regarding outdoor activies: Hiking, Golfing, Fishing, Hunting, Skiing; even Scuba Diving (you can dive the icy waters of Ushuaia!). The writing is engaging and erudite. For those that love nature no other guide gives you as much as this guide.

HOWEVER, "Time Out Patagonia" should not be considered as your primary travel guide. It is more of a companion guide. It offers only a handful of restaurant and hotel recommendations, and often these recommendations are the most expensive. The small maps in this book are pathetic, and will help you locate nothing of significance.

"Time Out Patagonia" fills in the gaps that the other guides have. This is the guide you will read after the other guides have helped you with your accommodations and eateries (consider: Footprint Argentina 2006 - highly recommended - see my review). Strongly Recommended.

Excellent guide for someone taking a trip to Patagonia. Precise in the level of information provided. It was used extensively during the 8 thousand mile trip by car. It helped in taking many decisions on sights and where to drive to and what to see.

Don't miss this one.......2003-12-21

This book has an amazing amount of information on Patagonia in general, and specifically Valdes Peninsula where I will be visiting. I was going to spend a lot of money with tour packages, uncertain accommodations, and a guy waiting at the airport holding up my name on a poster board...but now I can arrange it myself with this book and a taxi.

This book is a big disapointment. The begining chapters have some useful information, but much of it can easily be found on the web. The 220 franchises they list have no supporting information on why they're the best. The information they provide seem like condensed versions of the franchisor's flyers.

Good Council - Helpful Industry Overview.......2002-06-07

The first section of the book provides good basic council if you are early in the process. The majority of the book lists franchise opportunities by category. This may be very helpful in narrowing down what might be appealing based on individual preferences.

A Disappointment.......2001-01-16

I was hopping to get a book containing information on 220 franchises that had been rated "best" by some criteria. This book does not attempt to do that. It gives pretty good information on 220 franchises, but it makes no claim that they are best by any standard.

In the introduction to the information on the 220 franchises, the book states the franchises "..represent a wide variety of franchise opportunities. Chosen to provide a sampling of the many types of franchising opportunities available...".

This is not what the title leades the buyer to expect and is not what I wanted to buy.

Not very useful to me.......2000-11-13

Unless you are very new to coin collecting, this book has very little to offer. It does have some good, basic descriptions or discussions about US coins and their history, but if you are looking for what to pay for that next coin purchase you make, I would caution against relying only on this "guide".

When I purchased this book, I was most interested in reading the "Value Trends", but was disappointed to find little in that area that was helpful. The back cover in part reads: "It is the only book that gives you: (among several items) 'Price-performance graphs visually tracking a 12-year history of every series of US coins'." No such graphs were in the edition I received.

I would send the book back for a refund if it was worth my time. I would think most people would be better off buying the latest issue of the Grey Sheets or better yet Blue Sheets, that are available on the internet.

The first book any new gardener should buy is Barbara Damrosch's "Garden Primer," because of its plant info -- but this runs a very, very close second because of it's emphasis on how-to. I love the clear, helpful presentation of skills and techniques, the great illustrations, and the wonderful lists and charts.

Scatman: An Authorized Biography of Scatman Crothers.......2001-02-20

Scatman is a very good book at the begining but gets really

boring towards the middle. I think whoever wrote the book

shouldn't have concentrated on so many dry facts in Scatman's

life, by telling more of a story. Everytime the writer attempts

to tell stories in the book it's interesting but evertime he

keeps refering back to small details that shouldn't have made

it in the book. The most interesting thing that I learn in the

book is how Rap (Hip Hop of Today)has been around for decades!

Back in the 1920s jazz musicians where using a style refered

to as scat jazz in which they used their voices to make sounds

of various instruments. This required a great deal of patience

and intellegience to come up with a style like this. As black

male I think this is a good book to read for this month Black

History month to let us know what types of racisms we as a people

had to face to accomplish things in the past.
