Big pictures.......2006-11-03

One of the best features of Trees of Texas is the large pictures of leaves that can readily be used to identify species.

This is the only tree identification book I've been able to successfully use. I found it very easy to identify trees. As for not including a picture of the tree or the bark, there's only so much space, and the pictures of the leaves (and fruit/flowers in some cases) are great. And in Texas, the leaves are on the trees for most of the year, so I don't really understand why this represents a major problem.

Barking up a Texas Tree ...........2005-03-24

First I must say that this work deserves praise. It really is a good book in many respects. The photographs are good. The region/county zones within a Texas map are detailed and useful. Each tree has one to several descriptive paragraphs about the tree including uses, growth rate, height, and sometimes a snipet of history.
You'd expect that though.
What you'd also expect but is unbelievably absent, are two of the three most important identification tools for identifying any tree ... a picture or drawing of the tree itself (!) and bark identification.
The only way to identify your mystery tree is if you have a leaf from it. Count how months in Texas our trees are leaf-bearing and subrtact that number from 12. The remainder is how many months this book sits useless on the shelf.
It's a shame too, because what IS in the book is well done. This would make an excellent companion book with any other that shows the actual tree (a glaring omission) and a close-up, or even a discription of, the bark.
Buy it if you can pair it with another book that gives you the other two pieces of the puzzle .... I haven't yet found it.

Trees of Texas Is the Easiest of ID Books to Use.......2004-05-29

The format of this book, with its large detailed photos, makes identification easier than any plant book I've ever used. When I looked through a friend's book, I determined to get a copy for myself. The only thing I would change about the book would be to put 'native' or 'exotic' high on the page, but the information is in there.

Great Guide To The Maine Coast.......2006-11-05

FODOR'S MAINE COAST is a great guide to the entire coastal area of Maine, from the New Hampshire border to the Canadian border. It tells you about all areas, both rural and urban, and gives you a great idea of where the best shopping is, including the 145-store Maine Mall. However, one glaring omission is the music store Bull Moose Music, which has been a mainstay of the Portland area for the past fifteen years. This is a minor quibble, though, as this book desribes many of the towns in the area.

Excellent guide to the coast.......2006-11-03

This book gives you a great overview of the coast, with small tidbits about the history of the individual areas. As far as I know, this is the only travel book that exclusively with the Maine coast. I wish it would have contained more information on walking tours and hiking. Overall, its a great guide.

Fantastic Intro to Homeopathy for Dogs!.......2005-06-24

This is the BIBLE on alternative health care. I have 3 very old pets (Sheltie 15+ and cats 17+, 13+) and this has made all the difference in their old age being enjoyable for us all. I am fortunate to live in the Los Angeles area with a plethora of specialists in alternative health care for animals. That said, you get out of something what you put in and animals require proactive, educated owners.

This book allowed me, a novice when I bought it, to learn about other types of healthcare and, with a simple instructions, try homeopathy, chiropracty and acupuncture to treat my pets.

I love how the chapters are broken down by condition with specific cross references to different types of treatment per condition. There are very helpful warnings for every condition indicating when you can try to assist healing on your own or when you MUST take the pet in for doctor's treatment. The section explaining flower essences was a mind opener. I have seen the wonderful results first hand time and time again.

I can honestly say this book has allowed me to work with the best doctors available and help my pets resolve the many health crises that arise as pets age. I can't recommend this book strongly enough and insist all my friends who get dogs buy it and Dr. Pitcairns Natural Health book. Win-win.

Like all books that seek to prove that their man was Shakespeare, there's a lot here that is speculative. However, whether or not the central thesis is correct, the book is well worthy of study because of the light it sheds on many issues concerning the life and times of writers of the Elizabethan age.

Some artists' names remain relatively unknown among the greater 'stars' of their field. This is not an indication of a lesser quality craftsman but more a lack of courtship by the media and the public. Such is the case with Lucien Clergue. Among the cognoscenti he is considered a master of long standing and few art photographers can compete with Clergue's close association with such luminaries as models and friends as Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau, Salvador Dali and David Hockney. Yet fine though his portraits of these fellow artists are, they only represent a small sector of the subject matter for which Clergue has gained respect.

Well known for his nudes treated and landscapes and lightscapes, he also is respected for his dalliances with water formations, his landscapes, his studies of people such as his series on the gypsy children in harlequin costume in performance, and his obsession with lines as in calligraphy, an obsession which has resulted in some of the more beautiful images in this collection. Clergue quietly examines the life cycle, respecting the dead as well as celebrating the living.

This is a fine monograph with around one hundred fifty sterling images. The commentary by Eva-Monika Turck enhances the reader's appreciation of Clergue's life and techniques. In all, this is a fine overview of one of today's great living photography artists. Recommended. Grady Harp, January 06

Artist Lucien Clerge was born in 1934, became famous as a chronicler in pictures of Picasso's final years, and was noted for his nude photography, leaving the rest of his art in limbo. Poesie Photographique is a catalog of his works presents the wide diversity of his subjects; from his early photos of gypsies and ruins to his abstracts, plant art, and portraits. Each black and white picture is presented full-page and explored in several languages, making for an intriguing and important catalog of his entire skills set.

A Marvelous Retrospective and a Fabulous Read !!!.......2004-06-30

The legend that is Lucien Clergue is a compelling and very complex one. He was one of the first true artists of the photographic medium, rising to worldwide prominence in the 1950's, and whose ambassadorship of the art form has influenced countless fans, students, and protégé's the world over. Chronicling such an achievement is quite the challenge, but one that Eva-Monika Turck has done quite well in creating this beautiful retrospective.

It was in 1956 that Clergue first created his famous work, Nudes of the Sea, and for many, this is the style that he will long be remembered for. Never before had we seen such a novel interpretation of the nude. His interplay of flesh and light and water with an undeniable sense of eroticism was revolutionary. That body of work is covered here in Poésie Photographique, but so is Clergue's numerous other studies: celebrity portraits, bullfights, still-lifes, studies in death, gypsies, nudes, and perhaps the most profound and compelling images of Pablo Picasso, who was a lifelong friend, mentor, and spiritual father to Clergue, that the world has ever seen. There are almost 150 photographs in this large (12 x 9.5") and finely crafted publication, and are well worth the price all unto themselves. But the accompanying text, available in English, German, and French, is what really makes this book special. As an editor Turck has gone beyond the role of biographical reporter and has written an insightful, intellectual, and thoroughly entertaining expedition into the life and times and mind of this most fascinating artist. Her writing goes into great depth and is one of the best studies of a photographer composed in recent memory. This is a must read for anyone interested in the artistic process as well as the intriguing art scene that enveloped the world right after WWII and in which Clergue was positioned front-n-center. With the inclusion of Clergue's breathtaking photography, this book is a cinematic journey that we never wanted to end.

Personally, I had great expectations; was very disappointed to see such a limited selection of his work. A total of 150 photographs doesn't cover much when it amounts to limited highlights of his various themes, the selections themselves questionable (I should have taken note when the Editorial said that many of the pics hadn't been published before). Buy this used as a remainder in two years for $10.

Get Out Of That "Drift!".......2002-05-21

Carl Zaiss makes the bold statement in his new book that "there are things we can do to build a stronger relationship no matter what the other person does." In this fantastic book, the author contrasts "The Drift," his term for traditional ways of thinking and relating to other people, with "True Partnership," in which efforts are focused on enhancing the relationship itself. If things aren't going your way at work or at home because of "those other people in your life, who won't do what they should do" then take heart - this is a very encouraging book that shows you how to stop trying to change other people (and yourself) and instead focus on changing the relationships themselves. Techniques include connecting with others by realizing the interdependence of us all on each other; communicating with intent to constantly improve the quality of communications; expanding from an "either/or" mentality to a "both/and" orientation; and observing not from one's initial "gut feeling" point of view but trying out different points of view to see if a new one helps resolve an old conflict. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it for those looking for a new communications, team building, or conflict management tool.

Don't shy away from this book because you feel "partnership" has been overused. This is a refreshing look at the state of our relationships. "True Partnership" provides a powerful and practical roadmap for transforming personal and business relationships. What an entertaining, refreshing, and thought-provoking read! The premise of Kristina's book is that our expanding techno-modes of communicating--ranging from e-mail to IMs to texting--have indeed changed the way we approach relationships, but if these techno-driven relationships are to succeed, they need to be as equally stimulating in their non-electronic forms. This book provides a bird's eye view of just how much techno-relating has permeated our lives. (How did we ever communicate without e-mail and cell phones anyway?) It also provides a nice reminder that all the techno-relating in the world can't replace the need we all have for real, live human connection.

I have had to read Egan's "The Skilled Helper" for a B. Counseling I am doing, and someone lent me a well worn ancient version of "You and Me". Having read a bit on listening skills and having been counselling (two "ll" for Australian spelling), I thought I knew it all, but I found Egan's You and me" so concisely helpful. I wish I could give it to all my clients. I guess there are other books around, but for a generic listening skills book, I don't think you can beat You and Me.
