Book Description
Despite the immense obstacles they face, many alcoholics do manage to recover. In this groundbreaking book, Arnold M. Ludwig--a doctor with over twenty-five years of experience working with alcoholics--goes inside the minds of alcoholics in order to explain the behaviors and thought processes they use to get and stay sober. Whether alcoholics achieve recovery through Alcoholics Anonymous, a church, counseling, hospitalization, or entirely of their own initiative, the basic methods remain essentially the same. This book offers the first detailed examination of these successful methods. Ludwig has discovered that in most cases a lasting recovery can only begin after certain crucial attitude changes occur. Regardless of the motivation of alcoholics, powerful forces lure them back to drink. To remain sober, alcoholics not only must recognize these forces and the dangerous frame of mind that fuels them, but also must use a variety of techniques for resisting temptation. Recovery involves far more than simply not drinking; it means a sober life style. Over the years, Ludwig has worked with over one thousand alcoholics from all walks of life and within many different settings, including hospital clinics, Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, detoxification centers, and private homes. Using clinical vignettes, research findings, and personal anecdotes, he documents the basic principles necessary for conquering craving and achieving recovery. Ludwig offers an optimistic message: no matter how bad things get, there is always hope. This book will provide insights not only for recovering alcoholics, but also for their families, counselors, and doctors.
Customer Reviews:
A cogent, powerful little book.......2007-07-27
Though lucky enough to not be an addict myself, I have learned a huge amount about alcoholism and recovery from it in the past few months. I've been to several dozen AA and Al-Anon meetings, read many, many books and pamphlets and I must say that Ludwig's book is definitely one of the best I've read during that time. Everything he writes about rings dead true from what alcoholics, both using and recovering, and their loved ones report. If I had only one book to recommend as an adjunct to a good 12-step program, it would probably be this one. Don't be put off by the mass of references and small print, it's not a completely academic effort, but extremely pragmatic, super well written and easy to read and compassionate without being coddling.
(The other writer I can't recommend highly enough on relapse prevention is Terence Gorski, but that's a subject for another review...)
Filled in the gaps.......2004-01-11
I have been in substance abuse counseling and AA on and off for a few years. Recently I began researching alternatives to the 12-step approach in secular organizations such as SOS and non-AA affiliated books such as "Rational Recovery." This was one of the books I chose to read and I'm very happy I did. Written by a medical doctor and experienced researcher, the book brings together a lot of information about alcoholism that I had picked up in bits and pieces from treatment into an understandable and inspiring model for recovery. The chapters -- entitled "Paradoxes and Contradictions", "The Lure of the Siren", "The Dry Drunk", "The Mystery of Craving", "On and Off the Wagon", "The Proper Frame of Mind", "Resisting Temptation", "Sobriety Scripts" and "The Sober Mind" -- cover in depth how and why alcoholics relapse, and present foundations for committed sobriety. He states the fundamental view of the book in the preface: "1. ...many alcoholics, under the proper circumstances, do manage to recover. 2. Those who recover do so by adopting certain characteristic ways of thinking and behaving. 3. The changes associated with recovery...tend to involve...all aspects of their lives." The book follows this premise with scientific background, real life examples, and insight into why AA and other approaches work or do not work for different individuals. I've been able to put into perspective the seriousness of my harmful drinking and understand what it means for me to make a true, lasting commitment to sobriety. Most importantly, I've gained insight into the worst aspect of alcoholism (for me), craving, through the latter chapters on how to avoid, curtail and resist it. The information in this book has given me valuable tools to continue with my sobriety.
Well written and convincing.......2003-12-04
I love this book. As a drunk, I recommend it to all my friends who need help quitting. The book talks a lot about the tricks we play on ourselves.
A Very Effective Tool for Those Who Want to Stop Drinking.......1999-06-01
This book is a good "companion" book for someone who wants to stop drinking. It has chapters detailing the nature of cravings, practical solutions for resisting temptation, and what happens beyond sobriety. You can pick it up and put it down, after the first read through, and always find something useful if you need a little boost. The author's credentials and amount of research are exemplary.

Customer Reviews:
Easy to use, all you need for a short stay.......2006-04-18
London can overwhelm, but this small book makes it manageable for first-time visitors as well as London junkies. There's an overview, sorting the commonly-visited tourist sites by type (sights, activities, kids' activities), as well as shopping, eating, and entertainment listings that provide enough information for a few days' visit. I even found a few gems listed that, in the course of many years visiting London, I had not known about--the Geffrye Museum is a good example. The maps are not as good as the A to Z or Benson's maps, but they work pretty well, and there's a handy Underground map in the front. A bus map of central London might have been helpful, though I'm not sure how they'd cram it in. You'll need something heavier (thus harder to tote around as you explore) for background reading, but this is portable and useful. I own this book and always get it as a gift for friends going to London for the first time. Enjoy!
Decent travel guide.......2005-11-02
If you're planning your first trip to London, then you'll want a travel book with more detailed information than this one. If you've been to London before and just need a crutch to fall back on accompanied by some good maps then this book may be for you. It's a small guide and will easily fit in a jeans back pocket or jacket pocket. The maps in the front and back covers are pretty good. It gives a page or two to all the major must-see places in London and is a easy read. Most likely though, you will want to check out the Rick Steves' guides which are updated every year.

Bird watching and civil war.......2005-11-30
A little anger isn't bad. When you think of the collection of knaves, brutes, and simple ^$%@#s who rule many of the world's countries, you can get pretty steamed up, especially if you happen to see some of the happy results in person. What would be weird is if you didn't get angry. OK, Jonathan Maslow did go to Guatemala to trace the fate of the quetzal, a long-tailed bird that is not only the national symbol of that troubled Central American nation, but also gives the name to its currency. The quetzal has been important to Central Americans perhaps for thousands of years. Their great green tail plumes of the male bird were traded up and down from New Mexico to Peru. Indian armies believed that the quetzal flew overhead and blessed their endeavors. To kill a quetzal merited the death penalty. Just as the Maya people survived (despite all attempts to wipe them out) in Guatemala and make up more than half the population today, so the quetzal survived as a symbol. There's even a Quetzal Restaurant right near here, in Lynn, Mass., run by Guatemalan immigrants.
But Maslow did not just let it go at that---a trip into the forests to find the quetzal. He took note of what was going on around him and got angry. Good for him. The vulture was more of an apt symbol for the brutal, even crazy military rulers of Guatemala in the 1980s, unhappy country. He went to check out the vultures too, in a hellish dump. Massacres, executions, assassinations, disappearances, torture---these were the norm in Guatemala. When it was all over, some years after Maslow left, it is estimated that 200,000 people had died. Nobody will ever really know. At the same time, the country's poverty (in a rich land with hard working people !) meant that Indians had to keep on cutting the forest to make more cornfields, which, thanks to total lack of care by the government, would erode quickly. Maslow paints two sides of the picture very clearly---the beauties of nature, the general kindness of the local people (quetzal)---and the suspicion and disinterest of the official class living in gated luxury coupled with the signs of war all around (vulture). Such an approach could be simplistic, but it is very effective. One man, a rich landowner named Don Alfredo, who owns part of a mountain where quetzals live, seems to straddle the two groups, trying to protect his property at the same time as preserving the quetzals and treating the local peasants fairly. BIRD OF LIFE, BIRD OF DEATH is a good book because besides being well-written, it doesn't hesitate to go beyond its orignal objective---birds---and portray with considerable ironic or sarcastic anger the ugliness of a society at war with itself.
Captured the time and place.......2002-03-07
Maslow makes the reality of Guatemala in chaos both achingly plain and somehow funny at the same time. His political views are a subtext to a panorama of human and natural history. Very acute observations by someone who had to be crazy to pursue the quetzal into the Highlands and survive. One of the best books I have read in a while; I couldn't put it down.
the tragedy and wonder of Central American birding.......2001-03-01
Maslow does a fine job of presenting his quest for the the magnificent quetzal, legendary bird of the Mayans. The book chronicles not only his search for the bird and aspects of its natural history, but presents encounters with many other birds of Central America as well. Home to some wondrous birds in the almost magical rain forests, Maslow shows though that the avifauna and the land they inhabit is threatened by instable politics, unchecked population growth, and deforestation. A must read for any interested in birds south of the border.

Early American Stencils on Walls and Furniture

Country Arts in Early American Homes
ASIN: 1584651946 |
Book Description
For today's owner of an antique house, the discovery of an early stenciled wall--even a fragment of one--is a revelation that offers a shard of a tangible past. In post-revolutionary America, the decoration of choice for a surprisingly large number of home owners from all social and economic groups was walls painted with intricate stenciled designs. Stenciled walls were cheaper and more sanitary than those covered with paper, but the most compelling reason for the widespread use of stenciling was that it was considered far more stylish than impersonal, mass-produced paper. Stencil artists freely borrowed wallpaper motifs and crossbred them. Successive generations of wallpaper, which became increasingly more affordable after the Industrial Revolution, covered stenciled walls, hiding them, obliterating some and preserving others.
Ann Eckert Brown's extensive research has unearthed stencils not just in New England's more characteristic homes, taverns, and inns, but also in the south and midwest. She divides stenciling into rural-based folk art, which uses naturalistic, and sometimes primitive motifs, and classically inspired, urban-based stencils, which feature patterns more refined in scale and earlier in execution, echoing Federal style images.
Over 250 illustrations complement Brown's text as she makes fresh stylistic connections among designs, artists, regions, and houses over two centuries, discovering and illuminating some missing links in the history of wall stenciling. Even more, she ties together the shared destinies of the families, descendants, artists, rescuers, and restorers who lived with, created, or have dedicated their lives to preserving, this beautiful art form. She also provides a glossary, a discussion of early paint materials, suggested resources for wall stenciling preservation, and a Who's Who of American wall stenciling which includes 18th, 19th, and 20th century artists and preservationists. The result, as Mimi Handler writes in her foreword, "is a book that fairly hums with life and purpose."

I truly loved this book.......2003-05-17
Last weekend I attended a party in RI and I found myself emersed in this book for much of the time. I came home and ordered it right away. It is a beautiful image of post revolutionary America and this important art form. As someone who grew up in New England I loved this glimpse into the past. Ms. Eckert Brown's extensive research is evident, and the illustrations are wonderful. This is the quintessential book for anyone who loves stenciling, art and American history.

This book is a big waste of money........2006-01-11
This is an art history book. If you are wanting stencils for atristic application, don't waste your time or money on this one- the only stencil you will find is on the front cover. The rest of the book is MAJORLY BORING HISTORY, and photographs of stuff with stencils on it. Not too useful to a comtemporary artisan. In addition, it is not one of the copyright free Dover books. I give it a big thumbs down.
If you want authentic early American add this to your collec.......2001-05-18
I originally checked this book out of the library - I fell in love with it despite it's limitations and ordered my own copy. The photo's are old and grainy and almost all b/w. It's still great - it shows entire wall patterns and even entire walls. Most designs photocopy acceptably enough for enlargement for you to duplicate. Covers walls, floors, furniture and theorems, including photos of actual stencils used by William Eaton.

The future starts to look bleak for Homer until a chance meeting with Santa Claus himself turns everything around. Homer's holiday wish may come true after all.
Written and photographed with the help of Wilson's human companion, Nancy Levine, Homer for the Holidays is sure to be another holiday hit with pug owners, dog lovers, or anyone who enjoys a funny and touching seasonal story for young and old alike.
Customer Reviews:
For All Pug Lovers!.......2007-01-16
Homer for the Holidays is a cute book that pug (and Taoism) lovers will enjoy. It injects humor and Taoist wisdom into the story of a puppy who escaped from the puppy mill and Wilson the Pug's effort to find him a home. The photos are adorable. It makes a great holiday gift.
GREAT BOOK FOR ANYONE WHO LOVES PUGS.......2006-03-15
FIRST OF ALL I HAVE 2 GORGEOUS PUGS AND LIVE IN AUSTRALIA. I FIRST READ THE TAO OF PUG AND LOVED IT. I HAD TO THEN BUY HOMER FOR THE HOLIDAYS. THE PHOTOS ARE THE BEST IN BOTH BOOKS AND WILL MAKE YOU LAUGH SO HARD. HOMER FOR THE HOLIDAYS IS A STORY OF HOMER A LOST PUG WHO IS TRYING TO FIND A HOME WITH THE HELP OF WILSON. IT IS MORE OF A STORY THAN THE TAO OF PUG WHICH IS FUNNY INSIGHTS INTO THE LIFE OF WILSON. IT HAS A GOOD THEME BEHIND IT OF CARING FOR ANIMALS OVER PROFITS AND I THINK IT PERFECTLY CATCHES THE PERSONALITY OF THESE LITTLE ANIMALS.
Lovely pugs!.......2005-07-23
"Homer For The Holidays: The Further Adventures of Wilson the Pug" is a lovable book because of the lovable pugs within this magical story. As a pug lover, of course my face will soften and my spirits will rise at the sight of the pugs in the story, but non-pug adorers will still feel the joy when the read this delightful heartwarming story that can be enjoyed in and out of the holiday season. I recommend.
I LOVE this book!.......2005-06-28
When I saw there was a follow up to The Tao of Pug, starring that little cutie Wilson, I had to get it. And I sure wasn't disappointed. This little gem tells the story of Wilson, who is on a mission to to "the right thing," and finds the MOST adorable pug puppy Homer searching for a home. The photos are beautiful and funny, and the story is one of the most heartwarming I've ever read. This book is a MUST-HAVE if you love pugs, dogs, beautiful photos, hysterical humor, and a brilliantly told, heartwarming story.
#1 Best Pug Book!.......2005-06-04
This is not only a lovely gift book with captivating and artful photos of pugs Wilson and young Homer, but it also tells the heartwarming story of the elder Wilson (from The Tao of Pug fame) taking the lost puppy Homer under his wing to help him find a home. The story and photos complement each other delightfully, and the story made me laugh and cry. Whether you like pugs or not, this is one Christmas story that shouldn't be missed.

Customer Reviews:
What a great book!.......2005-12-18
After reading the other review of this book, I hesitated to buy it. However, my sister recommended it, so I took a chance and I'm so glad I did! I consider myself a knowledgeable paper crafter but I learned several good hints for using punches that I had not heard before on the first few pages I read. I have a drawers full of punches and I used them occasionally but I hadn't realized their potential until I saw this book. There are techniques that show how to turn simple punched shapes into works of art. Almost every sample amazed me with the creativity of the artists. I found the instructions clear and easy to follow, even for someone who can't draw.
While it's true this book is geared toward making scrapbook pages and that is something I do infrequently, these techniques can easily be applied to card making and other paper crafts. The ideas can be adapted to die cuts as well. I know that this book will not only help me get more and better use of my punches and die cuts but it will also improve the quality of my designs!
for scrappers not punch artists.......2005-05-23
This book has great photos of scrapbook layouts & the use of punch art in the layout, BUT.. the detail photos of the actual coloring of your punch art are only about the size of a quarter. I bought the book to see how to color my punch art & use it in various applications. The images are so small it makes it difficult to see where color was applied & how. The written descriptions are very brief & deal mostly with laying out the scrapbook page & not with the actual coloring steps used. I was disappointed. I expected more emphasis on the coloring of the punched items. A beter title might have been "Scapbook Layouts with Punch Art".

This is NOT a book for crafters !.......2005-09-22
I'm really not sure what the purpose of this book is.
It is NOT a craft book - there are no instructions, and actually many of the items can be bought from the suppliers listed in the back of the book.
Some of the ideas in the book:
- serve Chinese fortune-cookies in a white paper Chinese take-away container.
- place small candies in a 6-inch square of Japanese paper, "pull all four corners together, and tie with a linen string."
-"Think twice about throwing away old boxes. Cover them in different-colored papers and use to store notions, seaside finds, or whatever you like."
I didn't need an expensive little book to tell me these "ideas."
I'm sorry that I wasted my excitement and money!

Book Description
This volume provides an introduction to the much neglected topic of sculptural friezes, ranging from England to Normandy, the Loire Valley and Northern Italy. Frieze sculpture has until now been one of the least studied aspects of Romanesque art, though examples are to be found all over
Europe, set in facades and external walls of many churches. The essays collected here reflect the diversity of aspects considered: problems of narrative and iconography, regional groups, filiations, and conservation. Summarized in English and in French, the papers have further significance in
establishing a record of the present state of some of the great architectural decoration in the medieval European tradition.
Book Description
The monologs in this collection were specifically chosen for actors 15-25 years of age. The dramatic situations and themes will resonate with this age group, for they address the major trends and conflicts of today through revealing glimpses of society. Particular emphasis was placed on gender and ethnic diversity. Included are many selections for women and minority actors. Plays with Hispanic, African-American and Asian backgrounds were selected to reflect the increasing cultural pluralism in schools and in society at large. The introduction features information on selecting and performing monologs, goals and obstacles, staging and more. Each monolog contains introductory notes describing the character and setting the context for the piece.
Customer Reviews:
No help whatsoever.......2006-04-26
This book did not help me at all. I am a young teen actress and I did not find any good monologues. A lot of them were for older actresses and actors and were really religous, talked about sex, or were just really disturbing or boring. Even though it says student, it is more for adults. I really want to return this book. It was a waste of my parents money. If I could, I would give it no stars. The beginning does give some helpful information about monolgues, but it gets really boring to read. DONT make the same mistake I made. The other reviews said it was really good, but trust me, it's not.

This book was very helpful. It has interesting monologues dealing with realistic problems. It helped me alot with my audition. i recomend it for young actors looking for a monolog.
A gem.......2002-10-05
I had less than a week and a half to find a monolog and was having no luck till i picked this up in the school library. Wow! what a great book! i found the trouble was to pick one! this is an incredible book and i recomend it to anyone. please note that thesemonologs are from plays, so if thats what the director wanted then this is a great book to pick from. I was hooked by the first 5!

Wonderful resource for student actors.......2003-01-11
Roger Ellis has gathered a collection of new and challenging monologues for young actors. High school and college students will find these monologues particularly useful for competition and audition purposes. This volume would make an excellent addition to any student actors collection.
Recommended for schools with strong drama departments.......2002-01-04
This Audition Monologs For Student Actors II has recently produced modern plays and will appeal to student actors from grades 7-10. Many scripts and scenes are for women and minority actors, outlining social issues and insights which will reach a wide age range from 10 to into one's twenties. Recommended for schools with strong drama departments.
Great Big Smashing Hit!.......2002-01-04
This is an outstanding book of monologs for actors of all ages! You want to get that choice part? Use the pieces from this book to land it with ease. Never before has such a great selection been put together. Pay particular attention to FISHING THE MOON by Scott McMorrow, A GENIUS by Dori Appel, and MEMORY GLAND by Lynne Elson.
